Its a storage heater, they collect heat at night(when electricity is cheaper) and release the heat during the day depending on how high you have the output dial set. It will still release heat during the day even if switched off if it has collected heat the night before

IhateClonmel-

I thought it was completely off but I have it on 1 and it still roasting and the place is getting too hot, hope this is not the standard for it

Accomplished-Boot-81

It's a storage heater, so if it has been powered on, it will still give off heat for some time. You likely have a day night Meter with your energy provider, be sure to check, the times are usually midnight to 9am in the summer and 11pm to 8am in the winter after the clocks go back You day rate will be a little bit higher than typical 24hr but the night rate would be about half The heater is suppose to "charge" with heat during the night with that cheap rate and let it out during the day. Your input dial is how much you want it to charge during the night, the output is how quick you want to release during the day. Be sure to test it and make sure it's working, a common issue with them is the time switch can break so it may not work at desired times, if you are renting, contact your landlord, I work for a utility and have spoken to a few customer with large bills and after discussion I advised them it was likely the storage heater not being used correctly or there was a fault with the timing of it, either case the bill is due to your provider but the LL should be fixing it, don't expect them to pay your bill

kearkan

If there is an issue with it being broken and that's running up the bill I'd expect the landlord to cover that part caused by something out of your control that should have been fixed?

Accomplished-Boot-81

Morally speaking yes, idk the legalities of the tenant getting compensation but I know the tenant has 100% of the liability to the utility. They may be able to get compensation from the LL after but that's a civil matters between the tenant and the LL.

luvinzdislife

Storage heaters. You need to get them off ASAP during summer as they're so expensive

IhateClonmel-

It has one switch which looks off but it’s still letting out heat

Doids_

There should be a switch on the wall where it is connected, you can turn it off there. Edit. The third picture shows the switch, if there is still heat coming from the radiator, they are still getting power. So toggle that switch, it shouldn't heat any more(after the bricks which were heated last night cool down)

IhateClonmel-

I tried that in picture 3 I thought that was the off section because that’s how I found it, other side doesn’t make it much colder. All the others have switches so might just take the mains off

Doids_

If that's how you found it, and the radiator is still warm, it is still on overnight. So, if you switch its position now, wait until tomorrow to see if it stays cold. Typically they switch on when the night meter switches to the night rate(loud click from the switchboard around 12 midnight, changes to 11 during the winter).

IhateClonmel-

Will give it a go on the other setting and see tomorrow, if not will just turn it off at the mains, none of the others are letting out heat despite the plug being the same. Cheers!

Doids_

No worries! Sometimes switches can be wired upside down if that makes sense. So even though it looks off like the other ones, it could be the opposite. You shouldn't have to turn off at the mains as that is the point of that switch, hopefully you get sorted.

Disastrous-League-92

They come on from 11pm till 7am and then release the heat throughout the day, I hate them, I’ve the exact same ones in my apartment and they’re so expensive to run

GDeyebrows

I'm pretty sure you moved into my old apartment in D8 😂

Mr_SunnyBones

I thought it was my old Clonee one , behind the Chinese takeaway...

Actual_Material1597

I have the same ones 15 years ago in an apartment in Kildare, Jesus I hated them yokes

flickyflock

Did you live on Francis st

Gunty1

I dont know how handy you are but a simple fix is turn off electricity in mains fuseboard/rcd and disconnect wire completely. I hate those rads. I hate any heating in my home that comes on unless ive put it on to be fair.

brentspar

They're a pile of shite. They heat up during the night and voice our the heat during the day so they are cold by the time you get home.

Alert-Locksmith3646

The top controls are for the storage heater - essentially there's bricks inside that heat up overnight and then gradually release heat over the day. You should be ideally on a plan that is cheapest overnight rates, most suppliers have different rates. Call and ask. The switch on the side is an immediate convection heater. This is expensive to run, use sparingly. All in all, they're not great.

Funny_Deal_6758

Some of these have an on/off switch on the heater itself down low on the side. Have a scope around and see if this one has one

getupdayardourrada

The dreaded storage heater

notevenclosecnt

Bastard devices. Even removing them is a pain because once you open them up you realise they're full of bricks!

Melodic_Event_4271

Not so much stone age as brick age. They literally heat up bricks at night and the bricks release the heat during the day. Ludicrous that they're still so common here.

Jesus_Phish

They're only so common because landlords have no interest in replacing them with newer devices, our boom in building apartments and duplexes etc was when they were one of the only options for places that you couldn't/didn't want to be dealing with gas and your only real option to replace them in a build wit them is just standard electric heaters which are a bit cheaper to run so long as you heavily monitor their usage.  The type of builds that have storage heaters wouldn't be suitable for things like heat pumps, you can't retrofit gas or oil into apartments.

SierraOscar

Air to air heat pumps for apartments are an option and would be an ideal replacement for storage heating. They're starting to become somewhat more common. However it's often difficult for landlords to install as the permission of the Owner Management Company is required (alteration of exterior wall required). You can get units that don't even require external placement as the air is ducted in, but it still requires vents to be drilled so still a requirement for permission. There's going to have to be a retrofit scheme in the future tbh if we are to hit our climate targets. The Government will eventually have to strong arm OMC's into allowing cosmetic changes to developments in the interests of achieving energy efficiency.

Jesus_Phish

Air to air heat pumps require a better level of insulation and sealing that most Celtic tiger builds could ever hope to achieve. The reason they're becoming more common in new builds is because those builds are designed with the heating system in mind. I do agree that there's going to have to be something done though about older apartments. At a minimum I think that OMCs should be strong armed into installing solar panels onto roofs that in turn are used to help generate the electricity that would be required to charge the storage heaters at night.

MacaroonWaste

If you want it to turn on, put input to 6 and output to 3. If you want it off put them both to one. If you put them both at 6 it loses heat as quick as it gains it. So it's in one ear and out the other. I have these in my apartment. They suck. In my apartment there's also a dial with a clock which you can twist to get them to turn on at a certain time. I only use the one in my bedroom as you can put it on without having to leave them on at night to store heat. Too expensive though. I only use it when it's freezing

Shitseeds35

If only you had shares in the ESB

annzibar

You need to ask the landlord. It is regulation to have heat you can switch on and off. These are really expensive, ask ASAP.

Prestigious-Side-286

If you have access to your fuse board you can just turn them off there.

7oyston

These horrible things were the first thing I replaced in my apartment. Bought wi-fi connected electric heaters with much better controls.

connectedcc

economy 7 heating

OmegaStealthJam

It's a storage heater. They can be expensive to run. They turn on at night time to store the heat when electricity is cheaper and release it slowly throughout the day. One side is how much heat you would like to store and the other is how strong you want it to be released You should probably buy a free standing electric heater like this for when you want to heat the place up quickly or only have heat on for a while https://www.screwfix.ie/p/freestanding-9-fin-oil-filled-radiator-2000w/947KY?tc=BI5&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjw7NmzBhBLEiwAxrHQ-Vy4svf_ahJDXpE_xFgieCQzgM_l5TBmqbDbNU28F-tBveya1W1ELhoC2dUQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

Upbeat-Team-5561

The switches are possibly upside down if they are still coming on while they're in that position. The switches should realistically have neon lights on them aswell so you can see when they're on.

Seankps4

I have the exact one, they're outdated and an annoyance. Might be better off getting yourself some plug space heaters

radiogramm

The switches on the wall control a night rate heater that charges storage bricks inside the unit, and the other switch is a day rate element that gives you an instant, but expensive extra boost. Both switches being off should mean the heater doesn’t heat at all. Sounds like either a faulty or upside down switch. Up is off by convention on wall switches in Ireland and Britain. If you go to your fuse board. You’ll probably find some breakers for something like night storage / storage heaters. Flip those down to put the off. (They follow the international convention down is off.) Call your landlord if you’re renting, as the heaters need to be checked over and those switches sorted out.

Dry_Procedure4482

This is a duel storage heater and convector heater, it looks like an older dimplx one. There is often 2 wall switches near it. One to turn on the storage part and the other to turn on the convector. (Make sure they are turned off this time of year). You can locate the storage heater fuse and time controls on your electic fuse board. I'd advice not to mess with the time controls. The convector controls on the rad are the ones on the side of the rad not the ones on top. You will see a little switch. This will light up red when turned on for the convector, it will have a small dial inder it (not the dials on the top) that will control at what room tenp the convector will turn off. This us handy for not as cold days and when you need a boost on colder days when using the storage heating. The controls on the top control are for the storage heating. Check the wall there should be a switch on the wall to turn it on. You set the input dial to heat the ceramic plates at night recomment 4 until you knownwhat you are doing. You the can control the amount of heat its let out of them with the output dial throughout the day. Recommend having it down low at the start. You'll hear it opening and closing the vents as you turn it. Anyway if you still arent sure look for the Dimplex Strorage heater and convector manual online. If I find it I will edit it for you. Good luck though these are not cheap to run.

LK-1234-

These are very outdated heaters. As others have said check the fuse board - might have a timeclock in it controlling the heaters. Have a chat with the landlord also

Due_Form_7936

Lived in a house fur years that had these storage heaters, could never figure them out

RestaurantFeeling830

Actually have the exact same rads in my apartment. Figured very quickly flip all the wall switches off on them and do not turn the heating on full stop as people have said it will gather electric the night prior if switches are on and will release in the day..roasted us our 3rd day in and it will not go down in heat for a good while.. We've just left them off full stop now this summer and rely on the heating rising from the apartments below being on the top floor 😂..

IhateClonmel-

In the 3rd picture I think it’s off, is that what your switch on the wall is like

SquashyRoo

Ah, I remember those... You have to set what you want today... yesterday. :) I remember a fierce heat out of them all the same. Or maybe that was because I lived in a dog box.

ItsIcey

Turn the input dial to 0 so it stops warming up at night, turn the output dial to 0 so it slowly releases the stored heat, it'll eventually run out. There should be a switch at the wall somewhere to completely turn them off. They'll cost you a fortune in the summer. Invest in a good superser gas heater for the winter, your wallet will thank you.

Far_Sea_9006

Turn off at the mains.

callu80

Should be a red switch near radiator, most likely on the wall somewhere to Turn it off completely..

SlowRaspberry4723

Once it’s hot there’s not much you can do except wait for it to cool down! It’s basically got bricks inside that heated up during the night and they’re releasing their heat now. Storage heaters are a nightmare. If you own the place I’d suggest ripping them out. If you’re renting, check your meter carefully and make sure you have cheaper electricity at night, or else they’ll be insanely expensive to run - they might even have their own meter (a really old school setup) - this is also a nightmare because electricity suppliers don’t want to deal with it so you can get trapped with one supplier and they can charge what they like

Hair-Bear-too

The switches do not look to be of the correct rating. The switch with the wire coming out may not work as a switch but may be used to make the electrical connection. The first switch (on LHS) may function to turn the storage heater on or off!

Distinct-Weather-551

I’ve them in my apartment as well. Hope your house is isolated good, otherwise be prepared for a high electricity bill during winter. It’s shit

tails142

Weird switches, possibly upside down if the heaters are still coming on at night time when in their current postion? The storage heaters should be on a seperate wiring circuit connected to the night meter, you could try look at your main fuseboard and see if you can isolate the circuit there to knock off the heaters.

Beach_Glas1

If turning the dials doesn't work, see if there's a switch for it on the electricity panel and turn it off. It'll likely be a fairly high amp switch. If you're in an apartment, contact your landlord or building manager as well. They may have a better idea how to turn it off.

SignalEven1537

They're shite
