"we" don't "allow" them to make money. Individual people buy movie tickets, x a million people, that's a lot of money It's just a million people making the choice for themself to click on the sponsored post. Each person is choosing to support the creator with a few dollars. A million people each doing that means a lot of money in the end. It's the attention economy

ParmaProscuitto

Why do we do that.

That's how markets wotk. One of the key insights i had, 20 years ago, about new companies and new products, was that my personal desire or lack of desire for the product didn't matter at all. What mattered was the company's ability to demonstrate that a lot of other people wanted it. That's why entertainers get well paid for making drek like Thor: Ragnarok. Lots Of people wanted tickets. The studio couldn't care less about MY opinion.

But why do they want tickets. Don't most people hate or feel insecure about not having a lot of money, an easy job, or luxuries? They're actively if not directly supporting someone else's fortune that they then get to read about - its like there's a disconnect between typical human selfishness and entertainment. Most people lack a desire to be around people with more wealth than them. But we love reading and hearing about, and therefore supporting and showing interest about, celebrities and their lives.

I think human selfishness and entertainment are directly linked... we seek entertainment because we are selfish. It unlocks the happy brain chemicals. We're willing to pay for it. We're not buying the ticket because we're supporting the artist (usually), we just want to see something exciting. And most people can afford a $10 movie ticket now and then.

I always find that interesting. I mean I don't like certain things but I'll pay for them. It just baffles me that a million other people more outspoken or critical than me also give in to that. Meanwhile there are some things I absolutely refuse to support financially and most arguments of supporting the work fall deaf for me. Nobody lost significant money because I saw Age of Ultron on a torrent and I didn't feel bad about it looking at how much money that movie made.

What always gets me is why people care about the opinions of actors. Sure they're good at their job but really they're just good at talking. But the *writers* of great characters, we should listen to the writers if anybody in entertainment. The writers of a great show should be on the stage instead of the actors. Maybe cause the actors have to pour out their emotion but the writers just pour out their brains which is less vulnerable. Dunno. It's definitely weird.

ParmaProscuitto

I guess its just easy to get absorbed into this paraosocial relationship with actors. Nobody thanks the farmer who grew the food. They thank the supplier that gave them the food.

You toss around words like "we" and "they" and"most people" pretty fast and loose. Slow down and think.

ParmaProscuitto

Thank you for the suggestion. I'll file it away if it becomes relevant. Good day.

We don't,. We have no power in this world. The 1% are going to get richer while the rest will become poorer.
