Actual true story, was at a cousin's house partying, the area he lived in was relocating houses for a railroad overpass. At about 2 A.M., drunk and stoned I look out the front door and see a house go down the street!
If anything, itās one of the more stable structures Iāve seen on here. I might double-check my load distribution before putting any hot tubs on it tho.
Goddamn you guys jumping in here with reality. Funny this is I bet youād figure out an honest way to brace on that fucking boulder that we *could* put a hot tub and I just think God is looking down at us sighing haha
This.
The rock is added support sure, but you can't count on that to hold weight, like a hot tub. My suggestions is have a support attachment from the rock to the deck, no reason to remove it. Stone mason will be able to help with securing the deck, I'd guess? Never had to fasten something to stone lol
Considering the stone foundation of the house, I think they'd be able to build up a stone foundation on the rock that would look pretty good.
Or, drill some anchors into the rock.
Coming from a Mason, the prep and such, scaffolding, materials, and man hours of labour to do something like that would be far more expensive than simply drilling into the rock 12-24 inches and driving structural bolts.
I find myself wondering if they chiseled any of that rock away to make this work. The chances of building that house from footings up and getting the elevation of that deck just perfect to rest on the tip of that rock are pretty crazy. Like, I am sure it can be done and might not be a big deal for a commercial building to expect that sort of accuracy but residential? Wow.
Then...if it WAS chiseled to what we see...why would you chisel it to a single point instead of something more substantial to support your structure?

Iām going to have to disagree and say that this post is the coolest shit Iāve seen lmao
It can definitely be done but you need to remodel the deck with better support... Hot tubs are very heavy and then you put multiple people in them typically... Like others have said it's not attached to the house well enough nor would I even trust the overall flooring without additional support
If you're serious, needs more supports. That rock is actually perfect for such a scenario, but not with one little crossbar holding the whole damn thing up
Seems like a small amount of deck area for a hot tub.
If you are serious- need to add some additional bearing to your rock footing to reduce the point load or a bigger beam at the one point that exists
That's holding the whole house lol
Whole foundation carved out of that rock
So why not add a hot tub
Why not two?
I think you overdid the footing
š
Naw its just enough
With decks the tip is never just enough
Thats what she said!
Move the rock a little to the left
Be easier to move the house a little to the right
you're right.. go pick it up I'll wait
the amish: hold my coffee
The stoner: sits on the hill tokin a ////////@~~~ lookin at the house moving

āDid I take mushrooms again?ā
That deck is rock solid
This is the kind if high quality construction that people tend to take for granite.
We shale see if the deck holds up.
I'm not going to gravel. All of these comments rock!!!
Gneiss to see this kind of positivity.
Is it Boulder to not take part in a classic reddit pun thread?
I don't give a schist; I'm going to anyway!
Did you say granite? What are you a boulderā¦ a rock person?
* slaps rock *
Looks very gneiss
Solid. Solid like a rock.
Also, Iām not sure how well āsolid as a rockā will distract people from the fact that we built houses in Iraq!
If you pass a store, Pop-pop gets a treat?!
Ya beat me to it !
Actually the house and deck was built first, the boulder rolled down the hill but came to a gentle rest just as we see in the pic.
It rolled into place during construction of the deck actually. The builders just called it a day and packed up.
I was sure they just had it lying around in the backyard and moved it so they could save money on materials.
I think a pioneer rode it for miles and left it there under the deck to be out of the snow.
āItās a rock!ā
Yesā¦ yes I do
If anything, itās one of the more stable structures Iāve seen on here. I might double-check my load distribution before putting any hot tubs on it tho.
Would trip me out knowing anyone could walk up that rock into my bedroom at night lol
lol good idea! Didnāt even think of that. Comin right up!
Hide ya kids Hide ya wife
How is that any worse than the typical ground-level patio door?
Anyone willing to walk up a rock Is someone you don't want to mess with that's for sure
I mean, itās just stairs with less steps
Or steps
Couldn't you just lock the door?
Honestly I think thatās cool AF.
I know, right? I don't hate the concept. The execution could use a little work.
Just donāt add a cooler too and you will be fine.
NO. The rock is fine. The rock is amazing; but I'm not trusting that connection. Needs a bigger beam and probably a second point of contact.
Real talk. Needs something to keep it from tipping left/right.
Goddamn you guys jumping in here with reality. Funny this is I bet youād figure out an honest way to brace on that fucking boulder that we *could* put a hot tub and I just think God is looking down at us sighing haha

I'd probably suggest cutting the rock down until it's flat, then use it as a base for posts. But that might cost more than the house is worth
Just get the water sloshing back and forth a littleā¦ā¦
I think it would look nicer with two vertical posts.
Was the house built around that? Is it a naturally occurring rock, or a giant chunk of discarded concrete?
This is a naturally occurring rock the house was built around
Wow! Is there by chance an article on this house?
Not that I know of for this one specifically. But we have a lot of homes in Colorado built up against natural rocks
I kinda like the style.
it rocks
I thought this might have been Colorado.
Boulder Canyon actually
I find myself wondering if they chiseled any of that rock away to make this work. New England? I saw a lot of rock in New Hampshire
Actually yes
*slaps rock twice* Yeah, thatās not going anywhere
Actually the pioneers used to ride those babies all over
Ay caramba.
boulder canyon!
What the literal fuck this going on here
I canāt tell is the deck actually touching the rock?
The part connected to the house would fail long before the god of rock would fail.
FFS.
Maybe a bucket of water, a really small bucket....
Iām guessing it would hold up a significant number of hot tubs.
This. Is. The coolest shit I think Iāve ever seen.
https://preview.redd.it/tqpwyo0y9y6c1.jpeg?width=1125&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a01726564d43ade19583d4ed3c9492a23fd61426 Iām going to have to disagree and say that this post is the coolest shit Iāve seen lmao
I donāt see any hurricane clips tying the rock to beam. Not good. Will not hold hot tub.
Itāll hold the hot tub. It just wonāt keep it from blowing away in a hurricane.
Specifics
How bad do those hurricanes get in Colorado?
What like a hot tub for ants? You see how small that deck is??
This could hold All the hot tubs
Yes definitely, make sure you put it under the rock.
Probably two hot tubs!
Two hot tubs
He cago under with 3 hot tubs. He can't
That rock could hold up a triple decker hot tub
Bathtub.
Fucking genius.
Definitely put a video camera on that if you do put a hot tub on it.
Looks like some Colorado shit
If you weigh 50 lbs
I canāt believe that house stopped that rock! Iād put a swim spa on that deck š
No Needs reinforcement Probly a redo with fresh lumber
That could hold an Olympic size swimming pool.
Only one way to find out
Retreating ice sheets hooked this dude up! 20,000 years ago.
Yes. Do it!!!!!
Need to see the joist hanger between the rock and the deck.
Rock solid
Definitely ššš¼
Surprisingly brilliant.
Hahaha... I know exactly where this house is!
If not itās a nice gentle slide to the ground.
I am grateful for this sub more and more each dayā¦.
What
Meta stable
This is actually pretty amazing.
In all honesty though ,With minimal alterations 10000%
What in the Fāing what!?!?!?!?
What happens if the rock moves?
No
No
Seems like a lot of work to bring in a big rock for such a tiny deck...
Is that a load bearing rock in your pants or youāre just happy to see me
I'm thinking two vertically stacked hot tubs minimum.
That's too convenient to be an accident. Right place, right height. Why not just do it right though?
Yes , do it, and please update.
One picture would have told us all we needed to know! Lol
How in the hell is r/Decks such a fascinating sub with new interesting posts every day š
I came to Reddit for the r/Teaching; I stay for the r/Decks.
This makes me feel like Iāve been building things with insufficient footers for the last 20 years
It can definitely be done but you need to remodel the deck with better support... Hot tubs are very heavy and then you put multiple people in them typically... Like others have said it's not attached to the house well enough nor would I even trust the overall flooring without additional support
Question not if but how many
No , not with that dack
Tennessee?
We got a comedian over here
Foundation seems rock solid. Iām not an engineer though..
This is my fave deck on here so far
Cross bracing
Just the tip...
Regulations asideā¦ thatās fucking awesome
The engineer is a little conservative.
That solid, itād be a shame to not put two
So rock soild it could hold all of the hot tubs!
yes but you need to make sure the tub, the water and people are well balanced pretty much dead center
I'm gonna say no....hahaha.
If you properly transfer the weight onto that rock itāll support most anything.
Itās like the hand of God reaching out to Adam, except for decks.
That is actually amazing
There's only one way to find out!
I'm not even mad, that's amazing
Thereās only one way to find out
This is my favorite on ever.
i love everything about this sub.
No
It is granite and will crumble eventually, but it's cool AF now.
Could you possibly level a portion of the rock, and or bolt something into the rock?
Absolutely.
point loading a hot tub doesn't sound good
Between a rock and a hot place?
Only one way to find out!
hold? yes. fit? no
Probably
Well played
I can't tell if this is genius or not.
If you're serious, needs more supports. That rock is actually perfect for such a scenario, but not with one little crossbar holding the whole damn thing up
Lmfao
Hot tub? This thing wouldn't even hold my Mother in law
Yes! Yes it can, just have to replace the whole deck, and shore up the gravel, attaching it self to the house!
Does Simpson even make connection hardware for this??
Where is this, the North Pole?
rock
'I like that boulder, that is a nice boulder.'
This is how The Eternals 2 ends.
Build a waterside off the piece of shit deck over the rock waterfall. Replace the piece of shit deck with treated wood though.
They have diamond braid saws that would allow you to cut part of that rock off to say give you a level platform to anchor to.
OH MY GOSH, I KNOW THAT HOUSE! I can't believe someone finally posted this, lol. I've driven by this house since I was a little kid. Good ol Colorado!
If this is serious, get a carpenter. They can figure it out.
Roll the dice
the deck looks sturdy and new !!! should be fun....
This was built when lumber was ridiculous to buy, the rock was cheaper.
Seems like a small amount of deck area for a hot tub. If you are serious- need to add some additional bearing to your rock footing to reduce the point load or a bigger beam at the one point that exists
No
Iām suprised itās not holding a hot tub right now
This is listed as a ski in ski out onto a black diamond
Do not move that boulder its structural! Would add some more bracing to the deck connecting to boulder tho
This looks like some shit I would do
A the boulder canyon house
That's crazy someone thought this was okay
This says to me you are in grave danger of dying in an avalanche someday.
4 out of 5 hot tubs
I wanna start playing Metro now...
Thatās not a boulder. Itās a rock! š„²
Yep sheās good
NO.
With or without water?
That single board will rack with that kind of weight
The creativity is A+ I do however think it could use a shim to the left.
It's not big enough to fit a hot tub, but it could probably hold the weight
Only one way to find out
Thats called the reverse point load
What could possibly go wrong?
