It’s popular in the Midwest. I’ve never heard of a Florida room. Our company does 3 different rooms, screen room, 3 season room and 4 season room. 3 season can have whatever type of floor, single pane windows, and is unheated. 4 seasons rooms have an insulated deck with 4 or 6” of foam, same with the roof, and his heated by the home or a 2 stage unit. We don’t heat them by the home anymore as it stresses the furnace too much.
I made a post a couple weeks ago. These were quite popular before air conditioning was widely available. They were known as [sleeping porches](https://www.bobvila.com/articles/sleeping-porch/). The idea was during the hot summer nights you would sleep outside with the good breeze but still be enclosed from insects and the like.
Elder relative is asking for advice on rebuilding the roof and converting it to a 3 seasons kind of room below with a patio with railing on the top. I wasn’t sure if I should look into decking quotes or something else? Any advice on what to call it and what to look for in a quote would be appreciated.
Back in the day before AC, that was the sleeping porch. On hot nights, people slept outside as the building was often hot from cooking.
Much of the South calls in a Florida room.
I know people tend to hate them kind or porches. But I love them and wish I still had mine. You throw in a small pot belly stove and you can hang out during the winter and just relax. Out of the element and just enjoying doing nothing. I’d save it and embrace it.
Enclosed Porch
Patio - a paved (concrete or pavers) surface outside a home with no roof
Deck - Wood structured surface outside a home, usually with stairs to the ground
Balcony - an elevated platform enclosed on the sides by rails or a wall with access through a window or door
Porch - a covered platform outside a home - any of the above with a roof. Smaller porches a.k.a. Porticos
Enclosed porch - same as a porch, but with full height screen or glass wall
--- Screen porch - self-explanatory
--- 3-Season Room - glass enclosed porch, single pane, unconditioned
--- 4-Season Room - double pane glass, insulated ceiling, floor, and any wood framed walls; and equipped w/ HVAC
--- 3 & 4 Season Rooms a.k.a. sunrooms
