I’ve seen commercially available set ups that work that same way. If you have a shitty old cooler laying around, I could think of worse things to do with it

roccomo

It’s called a swamp cooler. They’ve been around forever. This same basic set up was offered as the first AC in cars.

hysys_whisperer

It's not exactly a swamp cooler, since the primary thing happening here is melting ice to cool air, rather than evaporating water to cool air.  To make a swamp cooler, you'd need that mesh vertically with about 6 to 8 layers deep, then, use a fish tank pump to push water over the mesh. Then when the fan blows through it, water evaporates, cooling the air down.  A true swamp cooler setup like this can get you 10 degrees or so below ambient (the cooler+desk fan ones aren't super efficient), or maybe 15 to 20 degrees if you are in the desert where the air is super dry.  Out in the desert, a purpose built one like from Atwoods/TSC will cool you down a good 30 degrees below ambient with so low powe use you could damn near run it all day long off a car battery.

TruckCamperNomad6969

True swamp coolers are around 30-40 SEER under the ideal conditions, that’s nearly double the efficiency of the highest rated heat pumps/AC units for residential homes. But as you said, they only work great in dry conditions. Here in CO for example at 95° at 15% humidity (which is pretty standard for our summers) the swamp will pump in 72° air only using a few amps. Once the humidity goes up, they are less and less effective. [Swamp cooler chart](https://www.google.com/search?q=swamp+cooler+temp+chart&rlz=1C9BKJA_enUS879US879&oq=swamp+cooler+tem&gs_lcrp=EgZjaHJvbWUqDAgBECMYJxiABBiKBTIGCAAQRRg5MgwIARAjGCcYgAQYigUyBwgCEAAYgAQyBwgDEAAYgAQyBwgEEAAYgAQyBwgFEAAYgAQyBwgGEAAYgAQyBwgHEAAYgAQyCwgIELkBGIAEGO8EMggICRAAGBYYHtIBCDg5ODRqMGo3qAIKsAIB&hl=en-US&sourceid=chrome-mobile&ie=UTF-8#vhid=KMmFMvKJLWhzGM&vssid=l) Edit: spelling

Telemere125

*cries in south ga/north fl humidity*

tuigger

We literally can't even live without regular ac out here because of black mold.

radicalelation

You could be like us in the PNW and just become the mold. Everything grows into the mold, and so too shall we.

Numerous-Champion256

A friendly reminder to PNW homeowners to make sure your roofs have been treated for moss since it’s the dry season, lol

TruckCamperNomad6969

I hear that. It’s been unusually humid here the last couple seasons and it’s a pile of scrap metal at that point. Still works great as a whole house fan at night! Also the water filters out crap in the air and we tend to be surrounded by forest fire smoke most of the summer.

hi-imBen

humidity is the least of your concerns living in south ga / north fl.... I've seen the billboards on the interstate in those parts.

Z0MBIECL0WN

no one will see our tears at least.

brentdhed

lol, those things are a joke in Louisiana. The ice melts in 5 minutes and it just starts blowing hot air in ten lol.

yargabavan

Sucks for iowa, it's always around 80 to 90% humidity. That said, I've taken this design before, buy froze the ice with dry ice. Works really well, but is wildly energy inefficient.I've. edit: Hey all, I made the ice colder with dry ice. Then I **only** used the regular super cold ice for my portable ac. The ice will get pretty fucking cold *and* not off gas anything hazardous. It also gives you a couple days of super cold ice since you can just freeze more block of ice for the next night.

ZiggysStarman

Isn't dry ice mostly carbon? Wouldn't that be dangerous?

MuhDrehgonz

Yeah, dry ice is solid CO2, so breathing it directly in wouldn’t be a great idea. But the idea here is you are passing normal air over the cold dry ice, so most of what’s coming out is normal air but it’ll have a bit more CO2 in it

DanfromCalgary

This is really good if you want to be cold but also in a little bit of danger too

MrGreebles

Even several pounds of dry ice sublimating is usually not an issue as long as you have some airflow and are not in a small enclosed space. It could be legitimately dangerous in a situation for someone sleeping on the floor or lower beds in a small RV or camper if they decided to use dry ice instead of normal ice and did not have any ventilation.

Therefore_I_Yam

So odd that something that works primarily in dry, arid conditions is called a "swamp" cooler

TruckCamperNomad6969

Hahaha, they do add an insane amount of humidity to the inside air…. Swampy if you will.

worktogethernow

Interesting. So swap coolers work well in the desert, but not in a swamp?

hysys_whisperer

Yep.  They're named that because they make desert air feel like swamp air (but cool).

lucystroganoff

Is this why they want to drain the swamp? Make the whole area less humid? 🤷‍♀️

foxjohnc87

It's not. A swamp cooler blows air through a water saturated membrane, cooling the air via evaporation. This thing, on the other hand uses the low temperature of the ice to cool the air.

ElectricalTeardrops

I made one similar to the video. My power went out. I had a fan, a Styrofoam cooler, and a small emergency power supply. Even with room temp water, it's still better than nothing. I hope to never experience living with a swamp cooler again lol.

Scrapple_Joe

Arizona swamp cooling right after a monsoon was just hot humid air ruining your day.

ElectricalTeardrops

It was in the California boonies for me! The only window that would fit the machine was directly in sunlight. If we weren't constantly rinsing the filters, it would blast dank swampy hot air. It was the only AC we had for 2 years. Never again.

MarinLlwyd

My measurement of these is how quickly it makes me start screaming, "No, for the love of god, no!!!" And this one isn't that bad. It could be improved a lot though, especially if you have the tools to make it in the first place.

BeigePhilip

Yea, I would not have drilled through the walls to set those dowels, just for instance.

Cilreve

He had plenty of that screen stuff. He could have just bent a table to stand in the cooler. But drilling holes for no reason is for more cool and rage inducing.

_Batteries_

Was just going to say this. I dont think this is DIWHY

BeigePhilip

Agreed, this is is pretty clever, as long as it’s not a brand new cooler

XxFezzgigxX

[They make these for small aircraft that don’t have a traditional air conditioner installed.](https://frankencooler.com/product-tag/airplane-cooler/)

darthdelicious

I built something like this myself before we had AC when our kids were little because I was broke. I had an old fish tank pump and I had it circulating salty ice water from a cooler through copper tubes that I wrapped around a floor fan. The tubes would get frost on them they were so cold. Not as good as central AC but it sure took the edge off when it was 10-15 degree hotter than normal.

seejordan3

Friends made a fog machine that was very similar.

PerritoMasNasty

Yeah this is the best thing I have seen on this sub.

spderweb

Yeah, I see no issue with this one. It's inventive. Not really wasting anything other than the cooler. The fan can even be rebuilt.

Brief_Scale496

Why is this here…? This a viable way to produce cool air and has been for quite some time - the dude did a standard job, the way you would build a homemade ice swamp cooler

Arnvior10

It get's even colder with salt

noteverrelevant

[Finally, now I know what's cooler than being cool.](https://y.yarn.co/c41e94e6-26dd-44b3-82e3-d0366814d322_text.gif)

ConnectRutabaga3925

you know it’s gonna be good when they pull out the zipties

mndsm79

Y'all ain't never made a swamp cooler before?

Ok_Culture_3621

No, but I’ve heard the tales.

Turbulent-Weevil-910

Are you referring to the tale of Darth swamp cooler the wise?

BigSneaky187

I’ve made swamp ass

mndsm79

Brother it is 95* in Orlando right now. Brewing a fresh batch as we speak.

No_Credibility

Raining now too, only gonna get worse

octopornopus

Thankful it's only 100 with 40% humidity in Austin.  Once we get to hurricane season and that swamp-ass Houston weather rolls in, I'm done...

mndsm79

Beryl's current track is across south of the Gulf and she's a cat 4. It's that time.

lysergic_tryptamino

Jaws all on the floor like Pam and Tommy just burst in the door

standupstrawberry

No, at least I haven't. I live in a country where AC is uncommon and I'm thinking this looks like a pretty good idea for the summer.

HVACGuy12

A swamp cooler blows air over a media saturated with water. I'm not sure what to call this, but it's not the same principle

Clear-Attempt-6274

This isn't a swamp cooler.

SassyMoron

Swamp coolers are slightly different (and way cooler imo). You need a sponge and a water pump as well as a fan and a cooler or bucket. Pump water so it drips through the sponge, blow air through wet sponge, cool air comes out due to evaporation. I made one for Burning Man and it kept my yurt 72 degrees all week. Ran on solar too! And less than $100 to make.

Typical80sKid

It’s a swamp cooler, common and useful.

iamyouareheisme

Not really a swamp cooler. They work by evaporating water, no ice. This uses the coldness of the ice

TheodorDiaz

So it's a not swamp cooler that turns into a swamp cooler after an hour?

genie_in_a_box

This is useful and cool. Get this outta here, corn pop.

Zendrick42

I made one of these once when our A/C broke. It did almost nothing when we used it inside a small room, and would be completely useless outdoors. Just get a fan or strap an ice pack directly to your body.

Stillframe39

I made one for my garage when I was having to replace the head gaskets in my car during the summer. It worked quite well.

Trextrev

Its purpose is to just blow colder air over you. It’s still better than a fan when temperatures are in the 90s because a fan is just pushing air not cooling it too. Definitely not effective for room cooling though any more than putting that same amount of ice in the room, basic thermodynamics.

fueled_by_rootbeer

They could have done it with a much cheaper cooler, though.

thanto13

Or a home depot bucket. You can get Styrofoam inserts online to make it hold temp longer

BanjoSpaceMan

Ya this looks fun and has a purpose

Levibo2005

I don’t think he knows what a hot wife is.

quetejodas

Or POV

johnny_cash_money

Maybe he’s doing a project while she’s off with her boyfriend.

Embarrassed-Abies-16

No, no, no. This is the point of view (POV) of the guy doing the filming. He is the one with the hot wife. She stayed behind in their air-conditioned house while he went over to his buddy's house to film his friend ruin a cooler.

the_opester

r/hotwife

FlavioLikesToDrum

Phrasing!

Trumpcangosuckone

If that was a real hotwife then a different guy would be drilling that box

wewill13

It gets steamy in there sometimes. So one of these would work well.

neloangelo5

meh wrong sub, this is a fairly common swamp cooler, and actually useful.

one_horcrux_short

Watching OP get roasted is the best part of this.

Moloch_17

I also thoroughly enjoyed it

ValyrianSteelYoGirl

It’s a swamp cooler. I’ve made a few in my time. The why is because it’s hot out and people like to cool down.

55555-55555

Not the forever time I saw someone inventing a swamp cooler. Even though power efficiency is something but it's still pretty neat. If you have spares around, try and make one. There's also another "proper" type that only uses water and is a lot more efficient than this one, but it's a bit more difficult to make, and may not work well if where you live has relatively high humidity. I'm sitting there with it right now, works well if air is dry.

Hopeful-Battle7329

The way he's sewing towards his hand, my woodwork teacher is about to have a fit of rage, men.

gamblersgambit08

I must have missed the needle and thread part

Zendrick42

Sawing

CaptainPunisher

Schwing!

Rhynocerosaurus

The pipe was already cut at that point, he was holding the 2 pieces together with the off hand and acting like he was sawing

llv77

The why is clear, though.

Pope_Dwayne_Johnson

Swamp coolers are very effective - this is not DiWHY

BudNOLA

Because they fucking work

bulletchvy91

What a waste of time I thought we were going to see a hot wife

Glittering-Most-9535

The POV is you’ve got a hot wife but for some reason are watching this guy butcher a cooler instead. This video dares to make you question choices you didn’t even make.

Motor_Stage_9045

I mean….it works….

shmerk_a_berl

OP clearly doesn’t live in the south 😂

marriux2

My favorite part is where OP gets ratio'd in the comments cause they're too stubborn to accept they are wrong.

cherniyvovan

So where is the hot wife

rabbitsdiedaily

Holding the camera, I presume.

Crap0li0

The only "Why" thing here is the erroneous use of POV. Other than that, this has been a solid redneck way to cool down for a while.

Donmiggy143

I mean... Hate to say it but these actually work. It's just a homemade evaporative cooler. Dry ice works best, and yeah that thing will blow cool air at you. This is actually useful, nothing compared to the guy who made sunglasses out of a Jaguar hood ornament though.

protocol21

Doesn't really belong here as this is not DIWhy. Standard swamp cooler.

Dreadful_Crows

Does anyone understand what POV means anymore???

Radtown

Swamp coolers are goated

MagentaIsNotAColor26

It's a swamp cooler. Very common at places like Burning Man where you have a lot of dry heat. They actually work pretty well. They cool the air by putting moisture out into it which then evaporates.

Disastrous-Bad-1185

Put 2 smaller fans in the pipes blowing out and this is gold.

OSUBonanza

I made something like this once with a Styrofoam cooler when I had to sleep in my truck overnight. It worked surprisingly well.

KorolEz

I've seen those work pretty well.

Zerokelvin99

OP is so dense, they don't realize they sell this commercially. It's literally a cooler with a fan that you fill with water and ice, costs hundreds of dollars. Yes this works, the concept is old, it's called a swamp cooler, these have been made using Homer buckets from home depot for a long time. Hating on a video because they don't understand the concept, OP is a chud

FriendlyTreeMonster

OP woke up and chose violence. Hope he has a better day.

radio_esthesia

This is functional, wrong sub

strangenessandcharm7

I'd swipe right on someone who could build me this thing 😂

CyberpunkLover

Not gonna lie, this is probably the list stupid thing I've seen on this sub yet.

cookingma

This is actually really cool.

Doctor_3825

This isn't that bad. It's just a home made swamp cooler. Useless as fuck in places like Florida, Texas, or even my home state Wisconsin. But surprisingly effective in places with dry heats like Nevada or Cali.

bardhugo

I don't hate this exactly, but unless you already have a fan, metal sheet, PVC pipes, and a cooler, it is probably going to be around the same price to buy a little evaporative air cooler new.

CriplingD3pression

I did this while staying in marine barracks in goodfellow Texas since we didn’t have working ac. Put the vents on the foot side of my bed and it worked great. I did use brazen water bottles though so I could reference them during the day

440Jack

You're a husband with a hot wife... and you just signed yourself up to refill this cool with ice ever hour.

Rambowcat83

This is actually really practical

Prize_Suspicious

When I read POV: husband with a hot wife, I thought this was gonna be a different type of video

XIPWNFORFUN2

He misunderstood the assignment when she said she was a hotwife.

everything_is_stup1d

why not? ifs good

AquaStarRedHeart

This is a swamp cooler. These things save people's lives every summer. This is a good DIY.

Negan-Cliffhanger

This is a swamp cooler. They're amazing for summer camping and lounging. OP is either a dummy or has never been to warmer climates.

hadzy_14

r/diWHYNOT OP is just dense

12ValveMatt

Lol he used cpvc glue on PVC. Should have just used clear.

JSRelax

Wrong sub OP. This actually has a purpose.

Satan_and_Communism

His wife is pretty hot

Neither-Basil8932

Believe it or not, someone is actually building this and selling it on ebay. With a power bank included to power the fan https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/155148955488

snailman4

I'm sorry but trying to glue PVC fittings with less than a teaspoon of CPVC glue is just painful to watch. You could knock the pieces together with a rock and it'd hold better.

pumptini7

Hear me out though......there's a pool in the background.

nitrogrundel

Ice coolers are a real thing helps when you can’t afford air conditioning

MomsSlimyVibrator

IF IT SERVES A USEFUL PURPOSE IT'S NOT A DIWHY.

No-Bark-Brian

I, uh...kind of unironically want to build one of these for use in my living room during the summer. 👀

MeldoRoxl

We built one of these in the UK when it got crazy hot and literally every AC was sold out. It worked pretty well!

Idontknow062

Thats just a swamp cooler

Queequeg94

Swamp coolers are the shit, this does not belong here's

godmademelikethis

Husband with a hot wife eh....

oreikhalkon

The only part I hate about this is the Astroturf

Mac_and_dennis

I’ve been using these for years at fishing camps and when we have hurricanes hit in Houston. They are very useful. I use a solar generator and plug these coolers into it. Then close up one room in my house and hang in there. Very cold room during summer months with power out.

ClayXros

Yknow, if you really need an AC unit on a budget, this isn't half bad.

JayDuBois

I mean, the guy was pretty hot. Now if he made you a swamp cooler from scratch? Obviously obviously a keeper.

Xploding_Penguin

My wife and I did this in our first appt with a styrofoam cooler. We used frozen water bottles however. That way we could just keep a few extra in the freezer and switch them out when needed. It didn't work AS good as an AC unit, but it certainly dropped the temperature in our appt a few degrees.

Fr05t_B1t

When you forgot swamp coolers are a thing

Lutrification

Should post to r/hotwife

Delicious_Put6453

So nice of him to air condition his hotwife for her boyfriend.

Ramenmayonaise

That’s actually really cool

LawfulAwfulOffal

That's a swamp cooler. Not new, but not a bad thing to make.

PickleForce7125

They have a huge fucking swimming pool and they needed AC?

JollyGreenDickhead

It's called a swamp cooler and it absolutely works. Does not fit the sub.

nts_Hgg

I’ve seen this done with just ice and a Home Depot bucket

JohnYCanuckEsq

I built a swamp cooler exactly like this for my wife's greenhouse. The only downside was filling it with ice constantly

Xtreemjedi

Swamp cooler. Go through enough hurricanes and you'll know why this is excellent. I made one years ago very similarly.

GeorgeRRHodor

Eh, I think that's not the worst thing you can do with an old cooler.

AnnaMolly66

This used to be a hack in some circles of van campers iirc. Usually done with a 12v fan

Frankie_87

Not a bad idea. You just gonna have to change ice pretty often.

6-ft-freak

Swamp cooler!

m64

When I read "hot wife" I expected something a bit different....

ScorpLeo102

Whole lotta work for some boo-shit.

m15f1t

I can't believe how fscking stupid and wasteful this is.

pastime_dev

They literally make cooling fans for outdoors. This is absolutely pointless. Edit: typo

SteelTheUnbreakable

It's a swamp cooler.

Smokey-Cole

These are actually pretty functional. Maybe not totally practical but they do work.

imdadnotdaddy

A little over engineered but I've done the simpler version, which is a bowel of ice in front of a fan.

The_Bunglenator

"POV: You're a husband with a hot wife" I don't recommend googling these search terms

XBeastyTricksX

At least it has a purpose and not just a blatant waste

cubntD6

Nah this is valid

TombOfTheArchitect

These actually work pretty well. I've gotten 90° rooms down to low 70s with one of these. This is one of the first things I've seen in this sub that I don't feel actually belong here.

kkfluff

I thought he meant the other kind of Hot Wife oops

moshpitinthesky

This is an overengineered swamp cooler

retrofunkus

Did this one time when the AC went out. We used a large Styrofoam cooler and block ice. Would recommend in emergency, only if you have the supplies lying around. Probably not worth it if you have to go buy everything.

banan3rz

These things are great for emergencies as you can make them from everything at the dollar tree.

Conscious-Smoke-7113

A HotWife is something completely else in other circles 🤫🤣

Kirito2750

This is a perfectly viable way to cool down in the hot months, particularly if you already have a shitty old cooler. Also “hot wife,” that word. It do not think it means what you think it means

girthradius

This actually looks like an amazing idea. Wrong subreddit lol

shrug_addict

Why is this here? This is a great solution if you have the materials already

Late_Mixture8703

It's just a diy Evaporative cooler, aka a swamp cooler, they work great when the humidity is low.

Jonnyporridge

That is actual genius.

KASH113

Some ones getting lucky to night. Lol

Crankyrickroll

Paging r/hotwife

Fun_Veterinarian_290

He's getting laid tonight no doubt

This is in the wrong sub. I get it's tacky, but this is actually a useful device if you have an old cooler lying around.

angle58

Actually brilliant and low cost AC

asuperbstarling

These work super well. The 'why' of this DIY is "We didn't want to break our air system last summer".

AmVuBuLanCe

This was all the rage in south africa due to constant electricity outages/ turn based power (load shedding). Considering the heat and that this can run off a small 12v for a few days, really elegant solution imo.

hollyheather30

This is actually kind of adorable lol

Specialist-Dirt7601

1 of the problems with this world is here in the comment section: ppl think they know everything bc of the internet! Look at all the swamp cooler experts trying to outdo one another by repeating stuff they seen on the internet.

NoxieDC

Not what I thought would happen when they mentioned "hot wife"...

LocalPawnshop

Did he just use cpvc glue on pvc?

kay_bizzle

What's your problem with this, OP?

taterthotsalad

Not stupid. It’s a swamp cooler. Poor man’s AC unit.
