Imagine having weapon damage like BoTW had lol That entire mechanic made me give BoTW a 7/10 instead of a 9/10

Fornbogi

Yeah and the reason for doing so is bad in my opinion. They said it is because if weapons were indestructible then players would chose one and never change. But they could have had a bigger enemy diversity with different weaknesses to different weapons.

Volatile-Bait

Thats always seemed like a dumb reason in my opinion. For starters, why does it matter if players find a favorite weapon and enjoy the game with it. Secondly, having a wide range of unique and fun weapons will always be significantly better than having tons of copy-pasted junk weapons scattered about the world. It also improves replayability because you can always do another run using a different weapon.

lemonlimeslime0

you could bee line to hyrule castle and trivialize the whole game with a knights claymore, botw isn’t that type of game.

Volatile-Bait

There are ways to prevent players from trivializing the game with a specific weapon, but I get what you're saying. I know BOTW isn't that type of game, but I personally would enjoy it more if it was. I find much more excitement from finding a rare and useful weapon that will last as opposed to finding another good weapon that I can get a few kills from before it breaks. Even the more rare weapons in the game were always a bitter-sweet find and I found myself avoiding using them more often than not just to save them for later use.

Infamous_Drummer3935

Every dark souls has weapon damage, just not permanent weapon breakage. I literally played through all of Elden Ring with the same weapon just because I could, where BoTW has me scavenging and switching things up constantly. Just not meant for some ig

VeraKorradin

BoTW took it to the extreme which, at least for me, took a lot of the fun out of it. I get forcing a player to switch it up, but maybe add repair, or idk, make things last longer that a single fight. Here is this awesome weapon as a prize, oh and btw it breaks after you swing it 10 times.

Infamous_Drummer3935

Yeah a repair function or durability upgrade would be make sense

onslaught1584

I think the weapons damage system in BoTW would have been a lot better received if it wasn't quite so drastic. I understand the psychology of constantly hunting for and using new weapons being rewarding, but let me enjoy my new cool weapon for more than one or two enemies. Having them break so easily actually took away some of that dopamine of finding something cool and new because nothing was special or overly powerful if it was just going to break a few minutes in to using it.

mixx414

Took BotW from a 9 or 10/10, to an unplayable/10 for me. I keep trying that game and wanting to like it. And tbh I think I ruined it for myself by looking into it. I always felt like I was just missing something when playing that game, but after reading how that mechanic is truly as hated as I thought it was, it gives me even less motivation to play. Such an awful choice for that game and it's so nonsensical

VeraKorradin

The nintendo fans will swear by it though. They think it's a "smart attention to detail and realism" in a game about living ancient robots and bird people lol

Palladiamorsdeus

As long as it's a flagship the Nintendo fans will swear by anything.

krooskontroll

"Realism" lol. I'm pretty sure a real sword can last for years and years without shattering into tiny pieces

VeraKorradin

thats the joke about nintendo fans who will say anything to justify a crap mechanic

tree_respecter

BotW is like Fortnite or Roblox. It’s targeted to iPad kids. Not only is the weapon system shit, but everything is so repetitive. Same goblins over and over, same shrines over and over, same milquetoast quests over and over. It is just so basic, like a mobile game. And it taught Nintendo that brand can whitewash the most half-assed game underneath.

lemonlimeslime0

what a bad take lol we would have no elden ring without botw

tempus_fugit0

I actually enjoy that mechanic. It can suck if you break all your weapons then end up in an early zone with garbage, but I loved looking for new weapons to use and how the game forces you to do so.

pplazzz

I know there’s a mod that can do that because LilAggy made a video on it, if you truly want to try

Salty_Shark26

Would make the game boring for me. Weapons are easy to find and after your first divine beats you should have a stockpile and know where they spawn. If you could keep the same weapons the whole game it would be too easy.

WuziMuzik

You don't need to imagine it, Dark souls 2 Scholar of the first sin

SCurt99

The weapon damage made master mode way harder. Whenever I fought higher tier Lynels, I'd go through so many weapons.

Just-a-bi

Honestly, that's the main feature keeping me from playing it. The only game I've played that i actually don't mind and even enjoy weapon durability is fallout new Vagas.

Economy_Vermicelli90

I thought BoTW's weapon durability wasn't a big deal until I played Dark Souls and wondered why they didn't just copy DS' system

blaiddfailcam

I don't really get any of BotW from Elden Ring besides it being an open world fantasy. Even then, their maps and progression don't function the same way.

Infamous_Drummer3935

Because Torrent, that’s literally the logic

Infamous_Drummer3935

Because Torrent, that’s literally the logic

redditshredditt

Yeah, i honestly don't see the similarities besides both being open world games. Maybe it has to do with the lack of handholding both games do, but that's just Souls games in general, which Elden Ring gets from it's predecessors and BOTW doesn't even go to the same lengths.

lotus1788

Don't you know you're legally only allowed to describe games using comparisons to Dark Souls, Botw, Tarkov, Slay the Spire, Cod, and Civilization? It's the first thing they teach you in games journalism school!

Misuorio

je voulez parler du monde ouvert et des détails pour botw et les style de dark soul pour le reste apret s'est mon avis

C_Attano_

Wut

DoritoKing48

*Insert a Hazbin Hotel Character telling you that they’re stealing your meme*

Infamous_Drummer3935

This thread has some of the worst takes I’ve seen

mtftmboygirl

They're literally just both open world, this comparison is pointless

Wazuu

Open world, Boss battles, collecting, crafting, armor customization, Medieval fantasy etc. It took me 5 seconds to come up with this list lol

mtftmboygirl

So Skyrim, botw, the witcher 3, elden ring, and baldurs gate 3 are all the same game💀 got it

Wazuu

Lmao wut? They dont have to be the same game to have similarities

mtftmboygirl

I'm saying obviously they have similarities but too many people go "elden ring is dark souls but botw" and it's stupid and reductive, and that's what this meme is saying

Wazuu

No its just saying both fan bases agree its a good game. You made yourself mad for no reason.

Bone_Wh33l

Honestly the fact that both of these games are open world made them less fun for me. To me, what redeemed botw was all of the side quests that made use of the open world and finding & completing shrines and even just finding the koroks made exploring all the more enjoyable. So did the art style of the game and how diverse a lot of the terrain is although the enemy variety and combat left a lot to be desired. As for er I just felt like it was too empty after beating Godrick (the sexy fucker) and Renala I just couldn’t bring myself to do dungeons any more because of how boring the felt. I still very much enjoy the legacy dungeons and the main bosses but after my first play through I had to limit how frequently I could go grab gear from the smaller dungeons to avoid getting bored. It reminded me of playing Skyrim more than it should have. Find dungeon, fight through a few weak enemies, find souped up regular enemy with boss health bar, get rewarded with loot that I’ll never use. There are some exceptions to this like the one that makes you think you’re going in circles. Overall I feel like I’d rather have had two minute long leading screens rather than numbing from point A to point B on torrent. And on that note I miss the item description leading screens :( I still love botw and enjoy er but the open world aspects just make it more tedious for me. The no open world setting for the er randomiser really cemented this for me when it was the most fun I’d ever had with the game

Worldly-Shallot9450

I never realized the weapon breaking mechanic was so unpopular, it seemed pretty negligible since enemies drop weapons that scale to your level so you effectively have unlimited weapons. Plus it's not like better quality weapons were hard to find. I ended up having too many and just left them in chests inside the shrines in case I ever needed them (which I didnt)

yeroc420

Open world games were made long before breath of the wild

Kshi-dragonfly

Hmm yes open world = botw

Crudeyakuza

Yeah...nah....... I don't remember any easy mode time/spacial manipulation in any from software games.

AP_Adapted

perfect recipe.

Falcorn042

Nah. Not even close. Didn't need a fextra life guide on where to go in BOTW.

MentalFabric88

Shadow of the Erdtree

dead-rex

Breath of the wild sucks lol

Mr_Weeb100

facts

LoanApprehensive5201

Agreed, absolutely boring and bad combat mechanics. Tears of the Kingdom was slightly more fun because of the interesting building of contraptions but otherwise horrid combat

tftookmyname

I liked Botw alot and it's what got me into elden ring and other games like that😭. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion though so I'm not judging.

LoanApprehensive5201

Yeah, a buddy of mine LOVES BoTW and TotK, so I get it, I'm just sad it doesn't work for me. I really enjoyed Ocarina of Time back before controls were as good as they are today; and playing the newest Zelda after Elden Ring, I couldn't do it.

tftookmyname

Oh yeah I will admit, even though I love the new Zelda games still, elden ring raised the bar quite high. I also love the old Zelda games though and I also started on either ocarina of time or Twilight princess.

dead-rex

I cant believe you even bought kingdom. Breath was so bad and boring that im never buying zelda again unless its back to the old school formula

LoanApprehensive5201

Yeah, the building looked fun, thats what drew me in. However, I'm done with Nintendo in general; their opposite button layout to every other console is infuriating. Not to mention selling 10 year old games at full price... Which has motivated me to sell my Switch and never look back.

TomyJohny

To you it's bad combat cuz all ur doing is spamming y. You got to experiment a bit and that makes the combat extremely fun, especially in totk

ArgiopeWeb

Elden Ring is what Zelda should have been. The series went to shit mainly after Twilight Princess imo. Much love to the early Zelda games for paving the way though.

DarkSoulsExcedere

God, twilight was so good. Liked it more than ocarina.
