So proud to be a Kiwi šŸ„

[deleted]

Attention: This is now Formula Kiwi.

Snoo_47023

Today was my first live race and I had so much fun! I felt like a big excited baby walking through the Rascasse overpass. Pretty good race from my pov (stand O), thank you Mitch for that pass at Piscine, I'm going to take that like a personal gift. Cassidy drove so well, he was so clean and quick all the way through. Excellent battle of the kiwis.

m0r0l1d1n

I will have to rewatch it on TV, but the dangling back light on Rast's car brought me joy everytime he passed us at Sainte Devote. I think there was few more dangling back light in the second half of race, but Rast was cruising alone and that made me notice it more.

Healthy_Pen_3481

Ha, I noticed the same thing down at rascasse! The cars donā€™t sound good entering the pits with bits of bodywork dragging on the floor.

GunnerSensei

Absolutely horrific directing today. Missing lead changes, numerous overtakes, battles that Jack and Dario were discussing, inaudible team comms, etc. It was very frustrating to watch. Just glad that the battle for the lead was interesting (until the safety car) because Iā€™m sure the director wouldā€™ve screwed that up otherwise.

keirdre

Just out of interest, but anyone know where Jack and Dario were commentating from? Jack is in Miami for the BBC F1 coverage, so I guess they commentated from screens at distance?

zantkiller

Dario was very much in Monaco. Jack I think might have also been in Monaco and did F1 from a distance.

keirdre

Ah, the other way round was it? Sounded like Jack was in Miami on the Chequered Flag preview.

IDefinitelyHaveAUser

I really enjoyed lap 13 where the TV director seemed to forget there were cars battling for the top four positions, and so just followed the 5th place driver.

Agoldsmith1493

I just can't agree with this, there were superb battles throughout the field, especially as the race progressed and we got closer to the end of the race. I was sad to see it end behind the safety car, but other than that I honestly loved it. As for inaudible comms; that's something that can unfortunately happen. The TV crew have to listen to what's going on and decide what gets played on TV. If you want to hear the comms fully then download the FE app and listen to your driver of choice throughout the race. Seriously though; all motorsport championships that allow for driver radio etc have situations like this where an overlay will say something but the information might be wrong, or the comms aren't heard. It's unfortunately a side affect of things being run by humans. As for Scott Elkins abilities, I can't think of a single incident in FE where Scott's actions/decisions have been called into question or have caused controversy; unlike F1 where there always seems to be controversy over the race directors. At least FE actually enforces their rules, technical infractions etc. If you're talking about the actual TV director then cut the person some slack; do you have any idea how difficult it is to decide what goes live and what doesn't what battles to follow, what battles to get the commentators to talk about? There are so many moving parts, and unless you've tried to multi-task to that level while also creating a coherent and entertaining narrative; you really can't understand just how difficult it is to do. I know how hard it is when I've been streaming and decided to commentate the matches I'm playing in for the stream, while also trying not to make mistakes. TL;DR: Humans aren't perfect, they make mistakes, directing a live race is difficult, cut them some slack.

theessentialnexus

Does it seem like several average teams took a big step up in pace this race, but were unlucky?

astrosovi

Kinda fun to see ABT cars performing better than Mahindra with same power train and admittedly being 6 months behind development..( pre race pitlane show in Berlin)

[deleted]

Formula E makes me hate F1.

Agoldsmith1493

I'm interested to understand why? I have some ideas but I'd like to hear you elaborate.

[deleted]

I meant it in a funny way, but in essence the fact that FE racing is so close and fun to watch compared to the borefest that is the 2023 F1 season. Especially Monaco, which is a race I hate from the bottom of my heart.

Healthy_Pen_3481

I feel similar, tbh. Sometimes I find myself watching F1 ā€œjust in caseā€ something interesting happens, which feels like a bit of a waste.

overlord2767

So over half way through the season it's looking to me like attack mode is now useless at most tracks. Teams seem to be planning when to tactically get rid of it rather planning when to use it for it's overtaking purpose. Last season the jump from 220kw to 250kw was pretty noticeable, but with these Gen3 cars going from 300kw to 350kw doesn't seem to have any major impact on pace.

juicysushisan

I mean, it was never supposed be to used with the Gen3 cars. The whole idea was to replace attack mode with the fast charging stops, but the shambolic roll-out of the new cars meant there was no time to get that in place. The Hankooks also mean the cars are traction limited enough that the extra power is only usable in very rare circumstances.

CrashmasterSOAD

It would have an impact on pace if the teams could afford to push instead of saving all the time. That and zero grip from the tyres make the extra power useless.

fathan

It needs to unlock energy from a separate battery or something or there is no point.

m0r0l1d1n

Well, it was supposed to unlock extra charge by recharging pitstop, but that is delayed to the next year.

fathan

Ah, thanks, I was wondering what happened to the pit stops.

sean-brian-93

Formula E saying there was 116 overtakes today. Impressive figure but do they count drivers losing places after taking attack mode as overtakes? Still probably more overtakes today than in the first four F1 races though I guess

innovator97

>Impressive figure but do they count drivers losing places after taking attack mode as overtakes? I really need someone to confirm this tbh. Edit: Fuck it, I'll try asking directly at their official account lol.

innovator97

Ok. To make this fair, lets assume that overtake that happened during pit stop in F1 also count as a legit overtake. What would the number be(assuming F1 do 2 mandatory pitstop to match the 2 Attack Mode that FE have)? 80-ish? Also, I just remembered something. In 2022, Monaco F1 had 12 overtakes for the whole races . FE today had a similar amount(8-ish) in 1 lap iirc. Feel free to correct me tho. I'm remembering these from memory alone.

[deleted]

12 including pitstops right? iirc either last year or the year before that, there was ONE on-track overtake.

innovator97

> iirc either last year or the year before that, there was ONE on-track overtake. That was 2021. The one with Gasly and Vettel iirc.

[deleted]

"WHAT HAS HAPPENED? WE NEED TO KNOW!"

nineixsixine

[So they've decided to ignore Article 6.3 of the sporting regulations and give Jake Hughes 3 points for pole position even though he didn't set a lap time in the final duel.](https://fiaformulae.com/en/standings?season=bc4a0209-f233-46c8-afce-842d1c48358f&tab=drivers&period=latest) > If the Driver in pole position does not complete the timed lap in all the duels (Quarter-finals, Semi-finals and Final Duel), pole position points will not be awarded. In exceptional cases, when the Driver in pole position has been prevented from obtaining a time in the Final Duel by means out of his own control, the Stewards may accept to grant him the pole position points. Having your lap time deleted because you missed your braking point and went off the track is force majeure, I guess.

mianghuei

Alright, checking the [driver's standings](https://fe-noticeboard.s3.amazonaws.com/08_2022-23/09_R09%20Monaco/072_Doc%2072%20-%20Drivers%20Championship%20Points%20after%20R9.pdf) shows that the pole position points is given to Hughes. > If the Driver in pole position does not complete the timed lap in all the duels (Quarter-finals, Semi-finals and Final Duel), pole position points will not be awarded. In exceptional cases, when the Driver in pole position has been prevented from obtaining a time in the Final Duel by means out of his own control, the Stewards may accept to grant him the pole position points. Looking at this, I interpret the situation as they completed the lap even though they got deleted, so it fulfills the "completed the timed lap" criteria. So it then falls back to first one to set a time gets the pole position since both's time ended up getting deleted. Any opinions, u/zantkiller ?

zantkiller

That is how I would interpret it as well. That or they just have forgotten that little quirk in the rules.

raniman5777

[Wait for the official noticeboard to confirm it.](https://results.fiaformulae.com/en/noticeboard) The main site might not be accurate.

Agoldsmith1493

As a fan of Sam Bird, seeing the posts on the notice board about him getting a 5 second penalty has saddened me. From 9th to 16th šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜ Someone get me a therapist to help me cope with being a supporter of Sam, it's anxiety inducing šŸ˜‚

nineixsixine

Nico MĆ¼ller also isn't classified for some reason even though he completed 90% of the race distance before retiring.

CrashmasterSOAD

Since Season 7 (or 8) I believe, you are no longer classified unless you physically take the chequered flag. Even if you retire on the final lap, you DNF.

nineixsixine

[But Rast was classified in Mexico City this year despite retiring on lap 38.](https://fiaformulae.com/en/results?season=bc4a0209-f233-46c8-afce-842d1c48358f&race=5321dd9b-3cf3-456f-b69b-bdeb247a2397&tab=race)

CrashmasterSOAD

That's FE being inconsistent then.

ajtct98

The commentary didn't mention it much but what a drive from JEV today - he absolutely carved his way back up through the field.

plastikmissile

JEV stealthily staying in the points seems to be his new MO for the last couple of seasons.

CrashmasterSOAD

Evans is cursed here in terms of winning. Not happening. Then again, much better than the Leclerc curse at least.

Tonoigtonbawtumgaer

Yeah, 3 podiums in the last 3 races (all the ones raced on the full track) but still good points days

jumper_x

Anyone else bothered by the award ceremony chaos? 3 silver trophies, disrupted video and music etc., other races had it arranged perfectly, this was a bit disappointing about Monaco

Alarmed_Substance_89

Yeah, I was cringing hard... it wasn't like that last year or the year before, which makes me think this wasn't organized by FE but rather the Monaco people? Beats me.

mianghuei

And Cassidy not having the champagne in time.

theessentialnexus

If you are not provided champagne in time, you are legally allowed to take out your wee-wee and give your rivals a golden shower

xkstr

Damn it, can't Da Costa make a comback during the race without getting screwed every single time?

Artjom_94

Someone get Cassidy a champagne bottle please xD

QC_1999

4 WEEKS WITHOUT A RACE????

mianghuei

We were supposed to have Seoul in 2 weeks but it got dropped because of the location not available.

LosTerminators

The German youtuber who once beat Lewis Hamilton in the same car is also in the paddock today.

[deleted]

You mean Brittney?

Tonoigtonbawtumgaer

Wait, context for this?

TheKwi

Nico Rosberg

Tonoigtonbawtumgaer

Oh ok hahah I was so confused, I thought some random guy had beat him in a kart race or something. In that case we could ask the question... IS HAMILTON'S CAREER OVER? (explosion)

keirdre

Excellent race. Not *quite* as bonkers with the slipstreaming, thankfully.

InfinityGCX

As I mentioned in the race thread as well, I really don't know how I feel about these cars under braking, we've seen people randomly slow down mid-corner, drivers somehow being able to arbitrarily gain 2 or 3 positions under braking, and people purely going several wide because people ahead of them somehow brake a couple car-lengths earlier than those around them. Cassidy overtaking 2, 3, 4 people here and in Berlin sounds really cool, but the moves often more look like his brakes have failed and he's lucky to get it stopped, rather then the show of skill they probably actually are. It just all looks incredibly clunky, and to me makes it feel like people overtaking is more a case of luck than skill, and often feels borderline dangerous. Formula E has always been a bit of a "rubbing is racing" championship, but seeing how many people here ran with damaged wings at the end, it seems that this is more due to people getting caught completely unaware by random braking distances of their competitors than aggressive moves. EDIT: Hey folks, thanks for all the replies, I think I need to get a better grip on what the Gen 3 cars can actually do rather than try to extrapolate based on just a couple moments. All in all I was being a lot more negative than I probably should've been!

Alarmed_Substance_89

Hey there, I'm upvoting just cause I can see you were just misunderstood, and you made the effort to explain yourself better. Here's to proper posting etiquette, dude! ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|wink)![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|upvote)

5haunz

>Cassidy overtaking 2, 3, 4 people here and in Berlin sounds really cool, but the moves often more look like his brakes have failed and he's lucky to get it stopped, rather then the show of skill they probably actually are. If you think that those passes look like luck then I don't know what to tell you. Consider for a minute: If it was luck then wouldn't all of the other drivers 'get lucky' sometimes as well?

InfinityGCX

If I'm honest, I probably both overreacted a bit and also just phrased my point rather poorly. First of all, I don't actually think that the overtakes Cass is making are lucky flukes. He's an incredibly quick and talented driver, and in my previous comment I also mentioned that they're probably really skillful overtakes. I think the issue at hand was that the relative velocity of people in the braking zones differs massively, and it's probably in part due to how people are handling their regen there. I think because I missed a few races that also translates into me not really knowing where the limits of the car actually are in comparison to where people start decelerating for a corner. As a result, someone carrying what looks to be way more speed into a corner than anyone else feels like it would end in tears, when realistically it's probably just clever use of the regen maps and car positioning. I'm gonna try and rewatch some of the races and other sessions to get a better grip on that, because I really want to like the racing in Gen3, but it just hasn't quite clicked for me yet.

[deleted]

I think it's bc FE cars are very unsteady. The drivers handling them well makes it look like the cars are constantly fishtailing bc FE cars don't have the same amount of grip F1 cars do.

InfinityGCX

It's probably in part due to the harder tyres and lack of rear brakes, meaning that a lot of braking will be dependent on how the car regens, and I can remember Gen 2 and Gen 1 also feeling a little unsteady under braking, but for whatever reason it just feels so much more exeggerated to me with Gen 3 now. I feel like I should just rewatch some of the earlier races this year as I missed a couple, but the Gen 3 racing is just not quite clicking for me yet, unlike how Gen 1 and Gen 2 felt. I'm sure I'll warm up to it though!

[deleted]

Yeah i think that's pretty much it. With Gen 3, the cars are much faster in terms of power. So they have to brake harder which leads to more unsteadiness.

LzyroJoestar007

Not really

Confused_Shelf

I think you are totally misreading the overtaking. A couple of drivers passed multiple cars going into the hairpin but it's because those cars on the inside line get boxed in and have to brake early to match the cars ahead while there is room around the outside to go flying past all of them. Those drivers aren't failing on the brakes, they're braking at the limit to get past those who trapped themselves on the inside.

InfinityGCX

You're probably right, but the difference just feels so massive! I guess it's just not quite as obvious to me yet where the limit of the car truly lies compared to something like the Gen 2 car or a more conventional petrol powered car, especially under braking. I'm sure I'll warm up to it eventually!

Confused_Shelf

Gunther's onboard is making people think Ticktum moved to the right way more than he did. The walls up the hill snake back and forth. Ticktum just went to straight line them as every other driver did but was slower off the turn due to damage. If the car ahead is slower, it's still on you not to run into the back of them. Expecting Ticktum to pull over, when clearly his car was fine to make it to the end, is an unfair request to make.

Alpha_Jazz

If Ticktum had been the one in Guntherā€™s position the comments would all be ā€˜why has he driven into the back of him, he can see the car is damaged, Ticktum causing another crashā€™

[deleted]

Fairly pointless general Formula e/F1 question in case someone knows the answer... Why do the drivers always drink from a big, bendy straw after the race?

lowelled

They were originally designed for use during red flags. Y[ou can get your own if you want](https://www.hydrorace.co.uk/shop/bottles/)!

Beserk_Falconer

It's just easier to deal with than pretty much any other type of bottle, you don't have to mess with caps or anything and the chance of spills is very, very low. Alongside the fact that they need to be able to just grab and go with TV demands etc.

Tonoigtonbawtumgaer

So strange to think about a few years ago when Formula E was worried of racing on an F1 track because of the speed. Just watched it on Youtube and this race is perfect from bringing in new fans. The Youtube comments section was full of F1 fans realising that punchline of an electric series has more overtakes in 1 lap than an entire Monaco GP for the past 5 years. Over the race the excuses run out and several "I've got to watch more of this" comments pop up. We should do a graphic to see if there are spikes in new members of the subreddit every time this race happens. This race gives me hope in the future of motorsport every year, it's such a great feeling. Also Cassidy leading the championship seemed impossible a few weeks ago, what a beast. Dude's been great in SuperGT, Super Formula, DTM and now this. New Zealand is Finland 2.0 at this point with the amount of great racing drivers they're bringing.

RezaMaulana98

> Dude's been great in SuperGT, Super Formula, DTM and now this. This very much. I have been excited to see where Cassidy ends up in FE ever since I saw how dominant he is in Super GT and Super Formula. Championship titles in Super GT and Super Formula, helping the 37 TOM'S team to at least a top 2 in the GT500 standings for four seasons in a row... He has the it factor to be successful internationally IMO. I was worried that he might not fit FE well with his first two seasons, but his recent run has made glad that he's able to show the talents that I saw on his Super GT/Super Formula days.

Tonoigtonbawtumgaer

Looking at his successes, he seems extremely adaptable. He was winning in open wheelers and closed cockpit cars simultaneously, then hopped in a GT3 Ferrari in DTM (quite different from a GT500) and just kept winning. And now he has adapted so quick to an electric single seater that drives like nothing else. Wouldn't be surprised if he ends up driving FE and WEC simultaneously like Buemi, Da Costa, etc. He could be great even in a hypercar.

thevigilante473

I am a new member in this sub this season. I attended my first race this year in Hyderabad. Apart from that and there being an Indian team on the grid, close racing is definitely a reason why I am a fan of this series. Monaco is such a snoozefest in F1

Tonoigtonbawtumgaer

I really hope Mahindra wins again, that team has the best celebrations in Formula E.

mianghuei

> We should do a graphic to see if there are spikes in new members of the subreddit every time this race happens. We got to 100k this year and gained almost 30k since race 1 this year, so hopefully 150k by the end of the season? Lemme try to pull up the analytics tomorrow or Monday.

Tonoigtonbawtumgaer

Oooh that's great! Surely there could be a boost

mianghuei

This is for Berlin https://preview.redd.it/x0tjfn7qs9ya1.png?width=920&format=png&auto=webp&s=b93c2cb0de1c23c358c8e9706c28c67213145d30

gioraffe32

That was a great, entertaining race! If F1 Monaco Grand Prix could be half as exciting as this... Glad to see Hughes is back in form, too.

LosTerminators

F1 race = 78 laps of Red Bull running 1-2

barmolen

Race director seems to be missing all the action for some reason... Great race otherwise.

Snoo_47023

That's the usual Monaco direction, it's maddening

windy906

Just watching the reply now and came to see if people were talking about this. Itā€™s like peak 1990s/2000s F1 - just showing the lead car regardless of whatā€™s happening and itā€™s terrible.

justaducklol

except for when there's an overtake for the lead xdd

gioraffe32

Are FE cameras controlled by some Monegasque producer/broadcaster like it is/was for F1? Because that would certainly explain that. One thing I don't get, however, is why the timing tower is so slow. I've seen this across all the races this season. A pass gets made or a car drops down the order due to damage and it just takes forever for that to be reflected on the graphics. Though I think it was even slower today.

Confused_Shelf

The timing tower is done automatically when the cars drive over timing loops out on the circuit. The way they've animated it is also particularly slow, which when you combine it with slower cars on slower circuits means it takes noticeably longer than F1 or WEC to update.

thetrueblue44

porsche throwing this championship so hard

LosTerminators

Four Kiwi wins in a row, that's incredible. Cassidy leading the championship and Evans back in contention after a disastrous start.

Tonoigtonbawtumgaer

New Zealand is the new Finland. Dixon, Mclaughlin, Van Gisbergen, Evans, Cassidy, Lawson...

leganjemon

Earl Bamber and Brendon Hartley as well. Even Marcus Armstrong has been pretty decent in Indycar.

Tonoigtonbawtumgaer

That's true, I forgot about them! That's an impressive ratio of great racing drivers/inhabitant

fractalcap

Guys I missed the race. Can I watch the race somewhere? šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜

mianghuei

VPN or r/MotorsportsReplays in a while.

dm17b123

If you can VPN to UK/Ireland itā€™s on the Channel 4 Sports YouTube

fractalcap

THANK YOUUUUUU!!!

dm17b123

Cassidy has been an absolute joy to watch drive so far this season, delighted for him

leganjemon

Yeah he's my favourite for the championship now. Kiwi's can't stop w8nning open wheel races.

Tonoigtonbawtumgaer

I think this proved he'll be a champion. The list of Monaco ePrix winners is as follows: Buemi, Buemi, Vergne, Da Costa, Vandoorne. What do all these guys have in common?

Throwaway91847817

Disappointing about that safety car end but Iā€™d rather that than keep racing with a car stranded on track. Otherwise, a phenomenal race as always from Monaco!

Yosam002

Anyone else surprised there weren't any added laps?

VincentVendetta

They don't add laps under safety car when there are five laps remaining or less. My guess is there wasn't enough time before that threshold for it to count for even a single lap.

zantkiller

>If an SC or FCY period extends into the moment the leader completes 80% of the original race distance, only the period before will be counted for the ā€Added Lapsā€. 80% of the race is Lap 23. So that first SC came out too late in the end.

Yosam002

Ah ok, thank you!

arturro14

Not really. Lap in Monaco is really long for Formula E standards and SC wasn't that long on track.

McLarenMercedes

Happy to see the pretty green car in first place.

CilanEAmber

Attack mode this season seems to be a hindrance rather than adding to the excitement.

ItsTomorrowNow

It's basically a joker lap like in Rallycross.

thedutchbasotho

New Zealanders OP, plz nerf

Alpha_Jazz

Ticktumā€™s pace was so impressive today, itā€™ll go unnoticed because people will be angry again but heā€™s doing such a good job in that Nio

leganjemon

Yeah showed what he can do when efficiency isn't a factor.

Browneskiii

The car is very clearly very fast. Both drivers have made the duels in the last two races.

kmw22799

The carā€™s fast over one lap and it has been all year, so theyā€™ve both been able to qualify well at pretty much every race. The NIO powertrain is just so inefficient, so they usually end up dropping back in the races because they have to save more than others. That didnā€™t seem to be a factor today though, and Danā€™s pace showed it.

ToinouAngel

JEV did not take his 2nd attack mode, did he?

mianghuei

[He did according to lap data.](https://fe-results.s3.amazonaws.com/08_2022-23/09_R09%20Monaco/ABB%20FIA%20Formula%20E%20World%20Championship/202305061504_Race/23_R09%20Analysis_Race.PDF)
