[This comment](https://www.reddit.com/r/GR86/comments/1dc8qkf/whats_your_unpopular_opinion_on_the_gr86_brz/l7wtnri/) about how to tune your settings helped my sound system a lot, might wanna give that a try before spending a ton of money on new audio equipment.

Noise insulation. Get a 50lb thing of dynamat. Put it in the spare tire well, doors, floor and ceiling. The ambient driving noise in this car is high. The best (and cheapest) way to make the speakers sound better is to kill off that background noise.

I just deactivated my active sound control today, and the car is noticeably quieter just cruising. It creates a constant almost drone like sound. Watch the YouTube video of the guy with a switch that can turn it on and off. With the background noise down, the stereo sounds just a tad better but it’s still subpar.

I haven't tried disabling it, how noticeable is the engine note without the piped-in noise? Perhaps a bit controversial but I generally love the sound the car makes, and I'm not sure how much of that is fake.

Fit-Sea2660

If you like it, keep it on. With it deactivated, you hear the real engine during acceleration. It’s a different note, more coarse. What I didn’t like about the active sound control is the noise it makes when you’re at 3500 rpm’s on the highway cruising. It’s a noticeable constant artificial engine sound like you have an exhaust drone. I thought the car was just noisy with little sound deadening, but then I saw the video of the guy with the switch. With it off, the car is much quieter on the highway. It’s a feature for most, but I like that we can turn it off. I may turn it back on later when I want it to sound more like a sports car.

Upgrading the dash and door speakers made a huge difference.

InnerInsurance1910

What did you put in?

wtrain77

Kicker 3.5 coax in the dash and Kicker 6.5 coax in the door. I had to fabricate a bracket to mount the dash speakers, though I think someone mentioned in one of the GR86 forums that Polk 3.5 coaxes fit without needing a custom bracket.

I bought the beatsonic amp, huge huge difference in quality. Best money I've spend since buying the car

InnerInsurance1910

Which model did you get? I saw three different ones that could fit.

bmanc2000

I bought the ENA-2S1, here: https://www.beatsonicusa.com/ena-2s1.html Install was easy thanks to the video Kevin Vo did on it. Just pull some dash panels, do some connector changing, and put it back together. Very much a plug and play experience.

OEM Audio+ makes a great system

Lexus_Fan85

I only ever drive mine in the touge listening to the engine, and thank goodness because this car has the worst stereo I’ve ever heard.

narwhal_breeder

The best Stereo upgrade I did to my car was buying a 2013 Mercedes E350 with the Harmon Kardon system.
