update: Update: I got my appointment straight off, and he knew the cause and how to fix it without injections and not taking off my whole nail. So he couldn't tell if it was retronychia due to the base of the nail, but he would say to the middle that my nail was dead. What had happened was I must have done trauma to my nail with tight shoes, which could have been the case as I am doing nursing and have to stand on my toes a lot, and I wore closed shoes as I couldn't afford to repurchase new ones so I stuck with them. Because of this, the bottom nail was trying to grow, and then the middle tried to on top or under it, and the top nail tried to do the same, so that was the reason my nail hadn't grown. My top and middle nails were utterly yellow and very easy to take off. It was so painless when he took half off it off, he drilled the bottom nail to make room for it grow. he said to me, that if the nail didn't grow, in a lot of pain, etc, I have to come back and just bite the bullet to get the whole nail off in my country, yes we have free health insurance, but podiatrists are not covered by health insurance and would cost $550 because of the injection etc. but I can already say it feels so much better.

Hey can I send you a picture of my swollen toe currently and tell me if yours ever looked like mine?

I just wanted to say, this ppst made me search what retronychia was and I think this is what I had! I had an infection and eventually pus came out from the nail bed. The podiatrist recomended removal and when he did he was like "huh this is interesting, there's multiple layers here". I could feel half my nail stopped growing as well as nail thickening. I am now recovering from a full nail avulsion.

Yes, this is what happened to me!! In November, pus came out, and I just thought it was a simple infection. This is what multiple GPs told me. Then it came back way worse, and I sought a podiatrist, and he thought it could be retronychia. But I hope the procedure went well. Was the anesthesia needle painful? And was the post-surgery painful?

The needle was definitely painful, and even now, one of the Injection sites feels sore. I drove myself home, and anesthesia wore around 30 minutes after the procedure. I thought I would be able to make it home, but I was not able to. It was extremely painful, and I was crying the 20 minutesit took me to get home. I took some painkillers as soon as I got home and I managed with ibuprofen for 3 days. I stopped taking painkillers then and it's only slightly painful if I bump into it or wearing shoes.
