I have heard of people recovering without treatment, but dang, yours looks painful and bad. I personally used steroids. Are there any free or reduced clinics near you? All you need is someone to prescribe you clobetasol propionate 0.05% cream. Use a good rx coupon to get it at a nearby pharmacy, no insurance needed, should be $10-15. It’s not guaranteed to work but will help with the swelling. You can get a prescription online on one of those Telehealth sites, like push health. Would be ~$75. Explain to them that you have retronychia and clobetasol is gold standard conservative treatment for it. Find the goodrx coupon that is cheapest, pick that pharmacy, have the Telehealth doc send the script to that specific pharmacy. all details on the coupon must match the prescription exactly (15g, cream, 0.05%) But honestly idk if the clobetasol will work Could try tape. Try different taping techniques to pull that front skin down. Or gentle traction on the nail to encourage it to get pushed out. Are you in San Diego? I bet topical steroids are cheap in Tijuana.

Will topical steroids still work if it’s super red and inflamed/swollen?

Did you ever get this resolved? Half of my toe is red and swollen from this and I’m wondering if there’s any hope besides removing the entire nail at this point.

We recommend that you visit your dermatologist or podiatrist. This looks to be infected and it will be important for your doctor to drain and culture the infection. There is also a chance your treatment may include an oral antibiotic.
