I’m also having this! My pod has told me I need nail surgery. Stuck on whether to get it permanently removed or not.

Is yours producing blood and pus too?

ClumsyTraveler

Pus yes, and an awful smell. It was crazy swollen for a few weeks and i went on antibiotics which just kinda helped the pain but not the issue. Now it seems to be doing ok, but it feels too good to be true. I’m gonna go for the operation just because i’ve heard my nail is too far gone to just grow out

Mine looks bad but the pain has lessened for some reason. Still producing pus and blood. I’m gonna have my toenail removed next week cause my nail looks way too far gone too and I don’t wanna deal with this forever. Was your toe red too? And did you use steroid cream at all?

ClumsyTraveler

Yes my toe is very red from nail down to the knuckle. I didnt try steroid cream as my pod didn’t recommend this, she said as its been going on for 7 months or so i’m most likely to late for that as my toenail hasn’t grown at all. I’m the same as you, cba to keep dealing with the constant infections

giftcard66

Yeah my toenail hasn’t grown in probably a year. My podiatrist tried to lance mine where the red swollen area is and made things worse. 😂. I’m being big baby about the nail removal cause I know it’s already inflamed so it’s gonna hurt and I honestly don’t wanna deal with that either.

ClumsyTraveler

thats literally me too 🤣 i’m so nervous about the surgery but i just want to walk properly lol. I’m unsure if you are supposed to put nail vanish on it or not, but I am because its so ugly 😭

giftcard66

Yesss lol. Then people say they have the mail removed and the problem happens a year later. Like Jesus man. I just want this to be a one and done thing. I know now to never wear tight shoes again and socks. That’s what got me into this mess I think. Would you mind if sent you a picture of my toe and you can tell me If yours is/was similar? Lol never thought I’d ever say that to a random stranger on Reddit but here we are

ClumsyTraveler

Hahah, i’ve posted a pic of mine before on this thread so you’ll probably find it that way. Although in the photo it doesn’t look as red as it did way back when. Ngl I think I got mine from stubbing it on the bedframe, but i’ve heard people get it from shoes too! If you still want to send/post a pic go for it, happy to help where I can

Lol it’s sent

Nail avulsion should be last resort as there are risks involved such as the nail bed shrinking, distal nail embedding, dystrophic nail, etc. Was the steroid you used high potency?

NotZucoZuco

I think it was high potency? It's clobetasol 0.5%, it worked great in combination with Epsom soaks to get rid of the initial swelling. But once the initial swelling was gone, it stopped making a visible difference. Granted I have only used it for 6 days now. Should I give it some more time?

PerfectConcert6695

I’d use it for 2 weeks total, a thin amount 1-2x/ day on the proximal fold skin, rub it in, don’t put a bandage over it, be aware that topical steroid use can cause skin atrophy. For context, when I had retronychia, my nail didn’t start to get pushed out until 7 weeks after I had first used clobetasol.

I’m having this now. Did yours have a small amount of pus come out too?

NotZucoZuco

It did. I eventually went to my GP to get it drained, because there was pus stuck underneath. I didnt have any issues with pus anymore after that. But I am still waiting so see any progress in terms of growth. :/
