When you stop to think about it, the Gu ritual is just a low tier bum fight in the dark.
You throw some kids who know basic martial arts inside a crypt and let them kill each other. Maybe the winner got lucky, used dirty tatics, hid well etc....
As far as selection methods go there are better alternatives, but then again maybe Tiger Niko just did it for fun

I mean it takes tactics. When it's a free for all, you've gotta be able to group up with someone or some people for a better chance of survival, then you have to let your allies be injured enough that at a later point when you turn on each other you have the advantage
Also you have to be resourceful enough to cannibalise them
When the first Gu ritual was mentioned (The Kanoh one) nothing about food was mentioned so yeah i kinda did wonder if you had to cannibalize the bodies to survive long enough, but then when the Gu Ritual was mentioned again in Omega i remember Tiger Niko saying theres was only enough food for 1 of them, so i guess the survivor didn't have to cannibalize anyone ? idk
He said there was only enough food water and air for 1 person. The average human can last up to two months without food, but can't last a matter of days without water
I think I remember tiger niko saying he personally taught all of them (might be wrong). So they're at least pretty talented martial artists, especially if you know even just some of the niko bullshit

It's designed to break your brain in such a way that you master the formless fighting style. Actually picking out the strongest fighter from the group is probably just an optional extra.
All I can picture now is Kanoh acting as if it was War and the Kids just play along and so he's using Formless to Dodge their shots and doing John Wick level Water Gun spraying and Water Balooning and as they all stay down he quickly realizes that he's just killed some Kids and goes off to dig their graves and comes back to find them missing AKA While he was gone the kids went home with their parents.
