No no no! You're confusing it with the Sonoma Desert toad. Also, there isn't any "licking" that will get anybody high. The poison is actually milked from the glands behind it's ears, much like popping a pimple. At the same time, a tiny mirror is positioned so as to catch the milky liquid on the surface. Once it dries, it is scraped off and chopped into powder, then smoked from a pipe. I can't think of any substance other than those man-made that can be simply licked as a successful delivery system for getting high.
If you've got access through your tv provider, the Hamilton's Pharmacopeia [episodes](https://www.vicetv.com/en_us/video/hamiltons-pharmacopeia-the-psychedelic-toad/59cd5cd7c6e1eb5725458fdc) about [this](https://www.vicetv.com/en_us/video/synthetic-toad-venom-machine/5fd3a82ce9ee6249e7195abd) are very interesting.
And in light of the thought that people might kill all the toads to get high, a way has been found to [synthesize the active ingredient](https://www.forbes.com/sites/amandasiebert/2021/01/08/hamilton-morris-on-mistakes-5-meo-dmt-and-preserving-psychedelic-toads/).
Unless you were one of 'them, aka: Me. The proverbial "'I'"lol. Old as shlt right now but I've done stuff on par with licking. Ah, Memories! I'm Still waiting for the flashbacks the experts of the time predicted would happen. But I'm hopeful.
Oh man, that reminds me of the surreal and ironically hilarious cain toad documentary an art professor once showed in class. To this day I don’t understand what this had to do with drawing (he was kind of a hippie and didn’t really teach, anyway), but it still sticks in my memory for how funny it was. https://youtu.be/6SBLf1tsoaw?si=OUoxtJRT4AvkHWsk
This is the truest thing I have ever seen written. You get one year of better than bad fireworks and you get hope for the next year -- and t then three years of a 20 minute fireworks presentation stretched out to 60 minutes. Lather, rinse, repeat.
There was a big muddy puddle right before the entrance to the bleacher area and saw several people eat it trying to walk through it. No drone show but a show in the very least.
Shame on whoever tried to orchestrate that failed drone display. Got there at 9:30 and waited with my 2 and 9 year old children until 10:50 when it started raining. Thanks Lawrence. Just stick to what you know.
Yeah, at least the people who came early could get food, but that's about all the positives I can come up with for the actual event. With the thunderstorm, I'm surprised nobody was shocked by lightning, given how many people's hair was standing on end when I was leaving
The way the guy on the speaker explained it, was that the hotspot that the drones were using to download the show’s information wasn’t working well. I believe they were sending the information from a laptop at the arena where everyone was watching. And the drones were kinda far away…
We didn't go out because of the weather, but I'm glad they _tried_ to do a drone show. I hope they don't use a failure as a reason not to try again moving forward. It's an idea with a lot of potential that has empathy for members of the community who struggle with fireworks.
Like, I love fireworks. The boom and shock in your chest is a marvel. But times change and loving something doesn't mean that something else can't be cool and good.
ETA: Also you'd toad is very cool!
> It's an idea with a lot of potential that has empathy for members of the community who struggle with fireworks.
Specifically, there was a lot of criticism of moving it to the fairgrounds last year and running a full fireworks show -- in the middle of a neighborhood and just adjacent to the Humane Society.
I remember thinking it was a *wild* decision. Fairgrounds I get from a space and layout point of view, but those specific fairgrounds seem like the wrong choice.
This should be boosted, because I agree. I just really hope those organizers either get replaced or have a back up plan for when these things happen, because instead they had a restless crowd and nothing to show for it
Yeah, that sucks -- I don't know anything about drone shows but it seems to take a lot of coordination, planning, and disaster preparedness to pull off. My daughter was asking about what a drone show is last night, so we watched some videos and it was so cool to see some of the ideas at play! One company was discussing how they could swap out drone batteries during the show and I was like damn, the choreography of pulling that off has to be stunning.
I don't know if network issues come down to a weather issue, a planning error, or a human error. I hope they learn and develop a plan from it.
Ultimately everything comes back to a human error even if there were planning problems and weather issues. The one drone show that I have had any experience with involved quite a bit of pre-planning and on site work prior to the event. I believe they had their own network set up with multiple access points. This just seems like someone trying to do it cheaply.
So during the pandemic I helped out at the mass vaccination clinics. During that while thing there were major connectivity issues that they had to find major work arounds for. I'm guessing the city forgot and didn't know that emergency management/ incident command has to do a lot of work to get things working g there.
There’s a shelter across the street from the fairgrounds, why don’t you take this up with them, I’m sure they’ll respond well to your point of view lmao
Just for the record that is a toad, and you're right it is very cool.
You are correct, I looked it up and discovered that after I posted, toad community please forgive me
To be fair, all toads are frogs but not all frogs are toads ☺️
Looks like an American toad to me. *Bufo americanus/Anaxyrus americanus*

I know I should be disappointed but I'm not. It's Lawrence tradition to have mediocre Fourth of July entertainment.
This is the truest thing I have ever seen written. You get one year of better than bad fireworks and you get hope for the next year -- and t then three years of a 20 minute fireworks presentation stretched out to 60 minutes. Lather, rinse, repeat.
I was sitting in the ground looking up talking to someone, saw the lightning streak behind their head and immediately knew it was over
I LOVE YOUR FROG TOAD
I LOVE THEM TOO I JUST DISCOVERED THEY ARE IN FACT A TOAD LOVE THIS TOADIE MY ACCOMPLICE IN CRIME
There was a big muddy puddle right before the entrance to the bleacher area and saw several people eat it trying to walk through it. No drone show but a show in the very least.
Fizzle in the drizzle
At least when you get a dud firework it’s not the entire fucking show ruined

> Just stick to what you know. Having a disappointing 4th of July celebration ***is*** what Lawrence knows, though.
I went for the 2019 show and swear there were people manually running between tubes and lighting them off with punks across the river.
Yeah, at least the people who came early could get food, but that's about all the positives I can come up with for the actual event. With the thunderstorm, I'm surprised nobody was shocked by lightning, given how many people's hair was standing on end when I was leaving
So what actually happened? Somebody referenced a network connectivity issue for the drones or something?
The way the guy on the speaker explained it, was that the hotspot that the drones were using to download the show’s information wasn’t working well. I believe they were sending the information from a laptop at the arena where everyone was watching. And the drones were kinda far away…
It’s so dumb, why could the information not have been uploaded days in advance???? That’s not a weather issue
I wonder where the hot spot was in that setup. Attached or paired to the laptop?
Not sure. They only told us so much over the speakers. But man… It must have been rough being the people involved with trying to make it happen
Oh yeah, you know it!
Can we somehow blame MidCo for this?
It wouldn't be Midco if it was satellite-based, but it does make me wonder what service they were using.

Was the music any good? Son Venezuela was supposed to play at 8:00 and Justin Speihls was supposed to give a speech at 6:00 pm (lol).
I thought the Justin things was a joke .. was he really going to give a speech?
Just kidding. If he did we could throw marshmellows at him.
The music on the main stage was meh until Son Venezuela went on. They really livened things up. I had a super fun time overall though.
Thank God I sharted horribly just minutes before they called it off
I’ve never known fireworks to have network connection issues.
So during the pandemic I helped out at the mass vaccination clinics. During that while thing there were major connectivity issues that they had to find major work arounds for. Oh man, I'm so glad our family decided to skip this. Yikes.
