Probably Horiguchi. Became one of the best FW and BW in the world after a too soon title shot against DJ. By 2017, he could have had an argument against any UFC FW. I do love Larkin tho. He's def one of my favorite mma fighters to watch. Dude's completely unique.

funnerfunerals

I do like the Horiguchi commonality in comments. He is an absolute beast, but for some reason, I still see Larkin as being more capable of succeeding in his given division.

sneakerguy40

Larkin never got back that close to a title while Kyoji won it once and fought for it a second time. You’re way off

DarkReaper90

Kyoji Horiguchi

Big-Pillow-Warrior

He didnt get cut, he left for more Money to Bellator. And he is the rightful owner of Sean Strickland from Stricklands own mouth, never beat him once in the training room lol

funnerfunerals

It's arguably. His contract ran out, and the UFC didn't give him anything else. They essentially left him to hang in the wind.

AliBagovBeatKhabib

They offered him a contract and the Bellator one was better....

funnerfunerals

That's what I'm saying...the Bellator contract should never have been better for a guy like Larkin...they essentially forced him to leave

AliBagovBeatKhabib

The UFC is cheap, they don't care

Tess_tickles24

That’s just the ufc. They’re cheap. I’d say they don’t even have half of the best prospects in the sport anymore.

_Red_Mist_

He literally finished a top 10 figher in Magny for his last fight lol. He got an offer just went with the better offer.

adambuddy

Larkin is an amazing fighter and one of the craftiest strikers in all of MMA. Not necessarily an innovator but a guy who does a bunch of interesting things that work for him yet don't get adapted elsewhere. I think prefixing his career with "he's never made it back to the UFC" is a little disrespectful though. To be fair he hasn't been done right by Bellator either since he was passed over for title shots. He should have fought Jason Jackson last weekend instead of Kuramagomedov. Instead he fought an overmatched dude on prelims.

funnerfunerals

It's tough not being in the top org, but when Larkin fights, I'm always eyes wide open. He is so damn good at what he does.

adambuddy

I know what you mean when you say 'top org' but the UFC is really not a top org in the way other sports' that have actual tiered systems are. Not even close tbh. He fought a bunch of top level fighters, won some and lost some but hasn't been super active and kind of fell by the promoter's wayside. That's pretty much the same as would have happened in the UFC unless he'd have stayed more active there. Which is possible.

donmifc

Terminology matters. Leaving the UFC is not the same as being cut by the UFC. Just the way quitting your job and getting fired isnt the same thing. Lorenz left the UFC

funnerfunerals

They didn't renew his contract, and they weren't going to.

donmifc

How on Earth would you know that? Are you a UFC executive? From what I remember, Lorenz said he felt disrespected by the UFC and wanted to test free agency. Id trust Lorenz's claims over UFCs weak ass, "we didnt want him anyways"

_Red_Mist_

You clearly weren’t watching at the time lol he had an impressive win and dominated Magny for his final fight who was ranked #7 at the time.

Historical_Grab_7842

Mighty Mouse. “Traded”

funnerfunerals

I mean, that goes without saying. The greatest disaster and disgusting cut that the UFC ever did was letting go of Mighty Mouse, but they were also trying to kill an entire division...I was more speaking on fighters outside of that

AliBagovBeatKhabib

He didn't get cut, he left because he got a better offer. Imagine saying that Lebron got cut from Cleveland or Miami

funnerfunerals

I'll give you that, but if a guy offered you peanuts, and the carny down the street was gonna give you $50, what would you do...he left his contract on the table, but he did it leaving the best chance for him to be globally recognized, and he's still feeling the repercussions from that...

tksopinion

Great fighter. Didn’t get cut.

llamacohort

Cro Cop is easily the best fighter to be cut by the UFC 3 times. As for best fighter cut a single time, Jon Fitch has to be up there. Brandon Moreno was cut by the UFC then came back to become a champion. Hendo was a 2 division champion in Pride and was dropped after smashing Bisping's face in, then went on to beat Fedor. Probably worth also mentioning Palhares and Daley both being good fighters that were dropped for trying to hurt people after the fight was over. But yeah, there is a lot of good candidates for that title. Moreno is probably the winner if you are looking at post cut career, Hendo is probably the worst if you consider that the match was a title eliminator, KO of the year, and on UFC 100 and he was still let go.

funnerfunerals

This is a fantastic response, and brought back a lot of memories, especially around the time that Larkin was fighting in the org, so it makes more sense why his contract was so low. Either way, good shit, man, you hit on a lot of good ones here.

llamacohort

Yeah, it's a wild business. tons of talent have come and gone.

sneakerguy40

I don’t even think of Cro Cop like that. I feel like he gave his best years in Pride and had a busy schedule. Moreno I didn’t think of, he really got cut and came back to be champ, that’s a great pick.

masoyama

Woof i'll be generous and put him at MAYBE like the 50th best fighter to get cut? and thats a HARD maybe

kidwhix

i think it should be worded "best fighter to leave the ufc in their prime". but i dont agree that its larkin. id put dj, guch, and gegard above him.

rumora

You obviously don't know what you are talking about. He was universally ranked in the top 10 in the world of one of the toughest divisions in the sport when he got cut.

Historical_Grab_7842

You obviously bang your mother.

masoyama

Yeah he does
