My ride or die is Too Faced Shadow Insurance. My eyelids don’t even feel particularly oily to me, but they eat eyeshadow like nobody’s business. I was honestly shocked when I heard some people can actually wear it with no primer at all lol. There’s no point in me wearing any without a primer because it’s gone in half an hour. I’ve tried a few different products over the years(UD primer potion didn’t work, it felt oily and broke down quickly, Milani’s was just fine, paint pots or concealer is a no-go) but for some reason the Too Faced works for me, it’s been my only one for like 10 years. It makes anything last basically until I take it off, through parties, work, weddings, dancing etc.

sabinanee

Ah I missed this one I thought the hangover eye primer was the one to watch from Too Faced but good shout, thanks. And yes same as you I dont feel that i usually have extremely oily eyelids as a rule, although my skin is combination.

Loaf_Butt

It’s so weird right? I’m combo too, oily forehead (and eyelids I guess lol) but bone dry everywhere else. I haven’t tried the hangover one, if you try the shadow insurance I hope it works for you! I just use the tiniest bit so it lasts like a year.

darkraven2116

I second this one!

BunnyFace0369

I like your name

CryptographerBig7542

Second the Too Faced. It's the best. Only thing that worked when I was doing 12 hr night shifts at a hospital with oily skin.

Character_Narwhal_38

I know you said you've tried a bunch of primers, so maybe you've used it already, but Thank Me Later Elisabeth Mott eye primer is the only one that keeps my shadow from creasing (that I've tried). I use it on bare skin so there aren't layers of skincare or foundation under it - just primer and shadow on the lids. - it stays even after going out dancing/sweating!

sabinanee

I haven’t tried this one, will do thank you. Love the name I trust it already :)) I’m glad it doesnt break the bank either. I plan on getting several based on recommendations and compare, in for a penny in for a pound!

NerdyGran

I 2nd this one!

sabinanee

So I bought and tried this and definity works better than what I was using! I still had quite decent eyeshadow on with minimal creasing at 3pm (applied since 8am)so definitely a win in my book 😁

Character_Narwhal_38

Glad it worked for you!

Kitten-Whiskers-

Have you tried skipping the setting spray? I have oily lids too and I've found that if i get setting spray on my lids they're super oily and color is separating within hours.

veryLlama_lauramo

Are you applying any skincare products prior to doing your makeup besides the primers?

sabinanee

No, I don’t. I do my skincare in the evening and don’t apply anything on my eyelids, only very rarely I swipe my fingers with whatever is left of my eye cream. In the morning I just wash my face and apply my sunscreen and primer but just on the face so eyelids should be a clean canvas.

yr-favorite-hedonist

Moisturised skin actually hold makeup for longer and better :) I have oily lids & combo skin too. I’ve noticed a difference in how my makeup holds up if I prep the skin before makeup. It’s also what they teach in cosmetology school as well - always start makeup with skincare! Just make sure you pat the various creams in, or wait, until absorbed and not sticky. That way it won’t interfere with your base!

sabinanee

Uuu interesante ok i’ll apply my beauty of joseon cream as it’s a light texture and see where that gets me. I get a bit panicky about skincare in the morning as I always felt it might interfere with makeup (and therems always a risk of looking like a greaseball anyway) but I do pack it on at night religiously, serums, exfoliants, actives, creams all the good stuff. Thanks!

LibraryLuLu

Two Faced Shadow Insurance - no setting, just the insurance and the eye shadow. Lasts through sweaty gym workouts and even swimming in salt water. I find setting sprays break make up down a little (allows for powders to merge and look more natural on foundation) so I don't use them on my eye shadow. I'm a grease ball.

sabinanee

Thanks, second recommendation for this yay

VicAViv

After 6 hours it kinda starts to fade. But that's to be expected after a full night of dancing.

fast_food_knight

Rose Siard says that setting spray can mess with the moisture content of makeup and have a paradoxical effect, causing it to break prematurely. I've stopped using it and have better results (I think)

sabinanee

Oh interesting point thanks. I’ve started using setting spray more recently and to be honest I dont see a huge difference, the products themselves and my base matter a lot more in the outcome.

Alalanais

I love the Nars primer, it lasted for a whole wedding day + dance party in the evening on my oily, sweaty and teary eyes

sabinanee

Omg that sounds bulletproof!

hannahlecat

Mine will usually last me a full day, but I used to struggle a lot more before I learned about eyeshadow primer and some other tips that have helped. First wash your face with some type of cleanser before doing your makeup, a fresh face will really help since you won’t have any natural oils already there to start breaking product down. Then go in with primer Urban decay primer / milani are my favorites and work better than paint pots, concealer, too faced shadow insurance, etc. On me. Then I set with my setting powder before going in with eyeshadow (bonus easier blending) and if I have any shimmery / glitter shades I take some nyx glitter glue on the center of my eyelid and pat those shades on top. And then when done with makeup I go in with setting spray (Urban decay all nighter works pretty well but most will help at least somewhat — just look for oil free). Also some eyeshadow is going to be more emollient and just not last as well as true powder eyeshadow when it is the final layer.

sabinanee

This is literally everything I am also doing except I always foget to put the glitter glue, and I also gave the nyx one, it’s excellent! I need to pull it out in the rotation to see it every day so I don’t forget, good shout! :)

IntergalacticFishy

Milani!

Sea-Extension-559

My 2 go tos are Elizabeth Mott eye primer & Mary Kay eye primer. The EM primer is more dry so I will actually use both for different applications.

Acrobatic-Wasabi-438

I put setting powder on top of my eyeshadow. I have eye creases and oily skin and it helps me. Because of my skin, no matter how I prep, one part of my eye just doesn’t blend. But putting setting powder on top helps it look more blended and less patchy. If it “dulls” down the look, I take a fluffy brush and lightly put some color where needed. May not be for everyone but works for me!

Far_Dish1460

I tend to have problems as well with creasing and just generally losing most of my shadow as I have hooded lids and oily skin, yay lol. So for me the Nudestix pencils have been the longest lasting base I have used, when I put that down under shadows my eye makeup does not budge. It’s not technically a primer but it will make my eyeshadow last for an entire day, at least 8+ hrs

ElvenFairie

Hi! I’ve tried all the “high end” Sephora ones: urban decay, too faced…but they all inevitably creased. BEST eyeshadow primer of ALL TIME that does not crease even after 10 hours of working, no retouching is…a drugstore brand: Cover Girl Lid Lock Up. This stuff is super affordable and it’s a one step deal, no fussing with setting it with translucent powder or more eyeshadow. (I feel like an ad lol but I will be so sad if they discontinue this because it is my holy grail). I do not add anything before eyeshadow except this primer. I have hooded eyes that are so oily, it looks like those glossy shadow looks. When I say I was shook when I tried this, I WAS SHOOK. This is a sheer primer, so if you want a little bit of coverage on your lids, your regular foundation/concealer over it should work.

sabinanee

Omg you are selling this so well and i’m buying yes girl! I dont need coverage on the eyelids so anything is fine as long as it makes the eyeshadow last. I love wearing metallics and wet looks and use topper like UD space cowboy over my eyeshadow and I just want to to look flawless :))

ElvenFairie

I really hope this works for you as well as it works for me!!! I will never go without this again because it really had gotten rid of all creasing and oiliness for me. Let me know how it goes 💖💖💖

Small_Biscotti_4520

i use a nyx palette and mostly a good 4-6 hours but can't lie if i took a nap or slept it wears off. sometimes i purposely overdo it in the morning so it still stays during the later hours of the day

indigopersimmon

I use hard candy eyeshadow and it lasts all day. Like 12+ hours no problem. I get the little mood kits with 4 colors

mk3v

My eyelids require all the extra to stay. Doesn’t mean I do it every day but on days where it needs to last… Primer (UD or Milani) Cream shadow Set the crease (at least) with a skin toned eyeshadow or powder Onto eye look Even when I just want liner, I’ll have to prime & set my eyelids, otherwise the liner will get gross

Chance_Fly_4147

I recommend Morphe eyelid primer. I also have the Elizabeth Mott eye primer as well, and I don’t care for it much to be honest.

sabinanee

Thanks, i’ll try it. I guess it is a subjective experience depending on every person’s skin. I feel like i’m starting a quest to find my perfect primer match or something. Only if what you ate and drank and all that didnt matter that would be so amazing

Chance_Fly_4147

I feel like makeup is a lot of trial and error lol. One more thing I suggest is after applying eyeshadow primer, set it with translucent powder!

sabinanee

Yep I am using the Laura Mercier one. I think if I pick it up on a puff and press it on the eyelids it lasts slightly longer than if I set it with a brush, but not maaaajor difference. I dont usually use powder to set my face though so I dont have variety of powders. Just this one and the Fenty powder is all I have.

Chance_Fly_4147

I also have the fenty powder! I really like it and it smells so good. It can kinda messy, but I use a sponge to apply the loose powder to my eyelid, and then a brush to swipe off the excess afterwards.

NerdyGran

I also use Elisabeth Mott. The longest test was my daughter's wedding day. Approx 10am till midnight. The other things I have tried since lately, although only tested from morning till evening, are cream eyeshadows (without primer) as I was interested after seeing people commenting on them on one of the subs.

sabinanee

Ok seems like this one is solid with three endorsements so far, I trust! :)

Coarticulator_

Strongly suggest nars eyeshadow primer, Laura Mercier caviar eyeshadow sticks! Good luck!!!

[deleted]

I don't have super oily eyelids either, but I do have deeply hooded eyes. I don't usually use a primer but I do use some concealer on my eyelid before doing my eye shadow and that seems to help a bit- at least to make it last a couple more hours, lol.

insomniacred66

I don't have issue with eyeshadow or eyeliner fading or running throughout the day and I have oily skin. So how I do my makeup, is I put on moisturizer, then pore blurring primer on, and then foundation everywhere, even eyelids and around my whole eye. Blend then puff on loose powder all over to set it everything. Then eyeshadow, contour, etc. Sometimes I put eyeshadow primer on, but that's a rare occasion and I mostly forget that part anyways. I do pretty heavy eye looks frequently, especially on the weekends and eyeshadow stays put and I don’t need to do any touch ups. I think you just have to do layering foundation and make sure to put powder down before eyeshadow.

VagueOrc

Out of interest do you have oily and/or hooded eyelids?

battlecatbee

I have it last me all day/ night. I use puff puff pass translucent powder from Kimchi cosmetics, urban decay all nighter matte finish setting spray, tatcha silk canvas protective primer balm and if I want to ensure it stays (if I’m going to a metal/ rock concert) I will use dermablend insta-grip jelly primer. The jelly grip primer I will use solo at times bc I find it holds pretty well! Even with glitter :)

callathanmodd

MAC sells a clear primer that I looooooove. My eyeshadow lasts until I actually wash my face, up to 16 hours and even longer depending on me falling asleep with makeup on (extremely rare but it’s happened). Also because it’s clear it doesn’t show texture on your skin so it’s good for not accentuating wrinkles or lines on your lids!

callathanmodd

https://www.maccosmetics.com/product/13825/33821/products/skincare/primers/prep-prime-24-hour-extend-eye-base Here’s a link

sabinanee

Oh thanks very much much. 24 hour wear, bold claim i’m definitely putting it to the test. What’s the consistency like it is thin like the UD oromer potion or thicker and grippier?

callathanmodd

I used the primer potion but it was a long time ago so just don’t remember the consistency to that one. In the tube this one is like a thin paste with a hint of color but it applies to the eyelid thin and translucent. I swear I’ve never had a crease with it! I use MAC eyeshadow with it too. If you end up getting it I hope it works well for you. Disclaimer is that I’ve never had too much of a problem with makeup lasting on my face. But the woman who sold this to me swore by it and now I do too! Much better effect than any others I’ve tried.

sabinanee

Thanks yeah it seems like it’s similar to the UD one from what you are saying. Definitely worth a try, most ppl forget with all this brands marketing that mac still do some amazing products

thndrbst

I’ve tried almost all of the primers listed…. Sigma. Sigma is the one. And it’s relatively inexpensive. I’m the oiliest of all oily. Trust me. Setting spray is going to cause more creasing my friend.

sabinanee

Omg ok Sigma, i’ll add that to the list :)) yeah I feel like lots of people have said to stop using the setting spray. I wasnt a few months ago so not sure how big of a difference it will make but i’ll stop using for a while and test all these products

GlitteringHeart2929

I have oily eyelids with the added bonus of hooded eyes. My holy grail is the Ulta Matte eye primer plus setting powder. I don’t use setting spray. I have palettes ranging from drugstore to high end and indie - they all end up performing the same. Hope you find a combo that works for you.!

sabinanee

Dang I don’t live in the US, Ulta is inly available there I believe but thank you!

Kicisek

I use Inglot Eyeshadow Keeper primer and I don't powder it before placing shadows. I only put light beige eyeshadow first below my brows to make crease blending easier and faster. My eye makeup stays intact for 12+ hours regardless of the palette chosen. And I have very oily lids. Other primers don't work for me at all.

sabinanee

Wow 12 hours, I need to try this!

Goddess-78

Maybe setting is the issue as well. I found that most of my eye primers I have tried worked better if you don’t set them. That way the eyeshadow is actually gripping to the eyeshadow. If you set it you’ve place a layer between the primer and the eyeshadow before you even do your look. I find that eyeshadow looks and stays better in place when I don’t set.

sabinanee

Hmmm I feel like I need to pull a spreadsheet and experiment with every variable:)) but yeah it makes sense what you are saying

DillPixels

I use NYX Bare With Me setting spray and my eyeshadow has lasted through full on snot cries and crossfit workouts.

jaiden877

I use chapstick to keep my eyeshadow on for a long time, it works for me 🤷‍♀️😅

sabinanee

But but…how? My brain does not compute haha isn’t chapstick greasy? How do you apply it?

jaiden877

I use my favorite brand soft lips and just apply it to my eye lids like I would my lips lol

sabinanee

Ok and then you apply your eyeshadow it as normal? I’m definitely trying this tomorrow. But why do I feel like you’re pulling my leg? Hahaha

jaiden877

Totally not pulling your leg! I know it sounds weird but it works for me so well so just thought I would share 😅. I prefer being kind and wouldn’t say anything to be mean 😊

sabinanee

I’m kidding, I appreciate it, these tricks are even more amazing as they are so improbable to think of and creative. His is the real deal, like the stuff passed on from generations haha. I’m definitely trying it.

scarlettsarcasm

I have extraordinarily oily eyelids and eyeshadow fading over a good primer after a couple hours is nuts. I don't think trying more primers is the answer, you're in dermatologist territory.
