Yeah it does. The whole point of a kameo is to be an assist. A simple tag in character that’s supposed to show up and then leave. Why would you take a character that’s not supposed to fit in as a fighter, and make them a fighter. If you could make them a fighter, why didn’t you make them a fighter to begin with?

The difference between the OG and 1 is that Kano has no involvement in the story, which is why Sonya was even at the tournament in the first place. Liu Kang was also shown to be hesitant to make Outworld's existence known among Earthrealm's governments, choosing to rely mainly on the Lin Kuei to be its first line of defense.
So it's not like Sonya has any excuse to be directly involved with the plot, at least until some time after MK1's ending, specifically Kenshi's.
