Saw pictures of the flood, and I would say F1 made the right call.

FireSalsa

Yeah my knee jerk reaction was c’mon it’s just a little water until I saw the track is essentially a river

AnimalNo5205

The cancellation is also less about the condition of the track and more about not pulling resources away from the recovery efforts, the track will likely be dry enough to race on by the weekend since the heavy rain has passed but you don’t need local authorities worrying about how to put on a huge event when they’ve got more important things to deal with

jdmjag

This was my reaction as well and then I saw pictures of the city and it's even worse than the track. F1 made the right call

redditing48

Come on, we might get passing in those conditions

BruntFCA_

This is certainly a more optimal response then the time the raced after Yemeni insurgents attacked a facility a few miles from the track on the day before the race in Saudi Arabia

RealSprooseMoose

So you're saying Italy just needs to hand them a bigger bag of money?

BruntFCA_

*after the Italian government hands them A comically large bag with dollar signs on it* “After the events in Northern Italy this week, we have decided that it would be in the best interests of everyone in the region that we raced on Sunday. After natural disasters strike, sport is the balm used to close wounds and heal hearts. we felt that it would be disrespectful not only to the community’s of northern Italy who have been impacted by flooding but to the fans of the greatest spectacle in racing and the pinnacle of motorsport not to race. When Formula 1 says we race as one, we mean it and will see everyone on Sunday!”

CoachRyanWalters

Now replace all the E’s with €

TheJohnsonGaming

“Aft€r th€ €v€nts in North€rn Italy this w€€k, w€ hav€ d€cid€d that it would b€ in th€ b€st int€r€sts of €v€ryon€ in th€ r€gion that w€ rac€d on Sunday. After natural disast€rs strik€, sport is th€ balm us€d to clos€ wounds and h€al h€arts. w€ f€lt that it would b€ disr€sp€ctful not only to th€ community’s of north€rn Italy who hav€ b€€n impact€d by flooding but to th€ fans of th€ gr€at€st sp€ctacl€ in racing and th€ pinnacl€ of motorsport not to rac€. Wh€n Formula 1 says w€ rac€ as on€, w€ m€an it and will s€€ €v€ryon€ on Sunday!”

CoachRyanWalters

Forgot the first e lol

TheJohnsonGaming

ah well, it was chat gpt that did it for me no clue how i didn't catch that

CoachRyanWalters

If you are on a computer, you can copy the text into Word then use find and replace. A bit harder on mobile though

PancakesandV8s

Haha, nailed it!

frigginjensen

The Saudi representatives (allegedly) made it clear that it would be very bad for them to refuse to race. Something similar happened to WWE in SA. They refused to let the WWE plane take off because of a dispute over contract and performance fees.

FeelingRusky

Yeah they were bombing petroleum facilities not far from the track with drone/grenade combos iirc. Yet they still raced... crazy!

BruntFCA_

I couldn’t believe they still ran that one, I wondered how many of the teams just went through the motions so they could gtf out as quickly as possible

Oatmeal_Raison

I remember Stefano Domenicalli, the head of F1, defending the action by saying "We feel safe"

Oatmeal_Raison

My apologies for 3 messages, my internet was acting wack yesterday

Oatmeal_Raison

I remember Stefano Domenicalli, the head of F1, defending the action by saying "We feel safe"

Reb4Ham

When was the last time a Cup event was cancelled like that? Not moved to a later date, just straight-up cancelled. Trenton 1973?

jftwo42

Chicagoland, Sonoma, Richmond 1 in 2020.

bigtex2003

I think he meant because of weather, but if you're talking pandemic, technically California 2021 would be the last time

ben_nc

I had actual tickets to the March 2020 Atlanta race that was canceled last minute, actual printed paper tickets like they used to mail out. Printed tickets went away thanks to pandemic.

chyler1397

Which means even LESS handling on their end required for those extra "handling fees" on tickets.

miboyl

Not like they removed the charge though. Greedy Ticketmaster bastards

HuntingTnEQ75

I bought tickets last night to a race in June and it was $10 a ticket for the handling which is crazy since they will just sent them to my phone in a few weeks.

PancakesandV8s

Nope, multiple fees now on electronic tickets

2InTheGoo1InThePoo69

I had to use printed tickets at Darlington

ben_nc

Think it's SMI only that has gone fully digital then with their tickets. It's the same with Bristol since 2020.

2InTheGoo1InThePoo69

I had digital on my phone but the lady said my phone couldn't get bright enough and I needed to go get a physical ticket

joe_broke

Mile and a half back to a kiosk or agent, mile and a half back to the gate. "Sorry these are fake"

2InTheGoo1InThePoo69

Luckily it was friday and I was in my car as I was trying to get into the infield. If it was Sunday and I was walking I would've been pissed lol I think it was a classic case of old person not understanding technology

Stouty4567

I was at the track already, my birthday was that weekend and we had a camping spot up in turn 1. Then day before the race they told us we all had to leave.

mu5icrage

Yeah, start of Covid for sure. We had Darlington/Charlotte/not much else for a bit there

libsoutherner

Not saying they didn’t make the right call but it feels like they have a race cancelled pretty much every year

thenewtomsawyer

F1? The last "Cancelled" GP Was Australia 2020 on the brink of COVID. The one before that was 2011 Bahrain due to massive civil unrest. Plenty of rain shortened races or rain related red flags but save for Belgium 2021 noine have been massively shortened in recent memory.

cd247

Russia GP last year?

The_Reelest

Also the Chinese Grand for the last how many years.

AnchorDrown

This race is actually the replacement for the Chinese GP, too.

The_Reelest

I’d lost track of that with all the schedule reshuffling of the last couple of years. Imola turned being a COVID replacement Grand Prix into a fixture on the schedule for a few years, think they signed a contract through 2025 I believe with the Russian GP being canceled, to having its Grand Prix being canceled itself. Weird turn of events for Imola.

RedDraco86

This year, China was to have happened in Mid-April. Instead we got three weeks of no F1.

thenewtomsawyer

Eh kinda? F1 voided their contract due to the invasion and removed the race from the calendar before the season started. I don't think that quite counts compared to other "cancelled" events.

libsoutherner

Russia? China? Vietnam? Australia 2021?

thenewtomsawyer

I don't consider "Not on the calendar due to the pandemic or wartime aggression" to be the same as "cancelled" but that's just my opinion. Cancelled to me is something happens at the circuit once the season has started. The pandemic being a special case, China hasn't been on the calendar since but the races after 2020 weren't "cancelled" in my opinion. Would you consider the USGP at Indy to be "cancelled" after the contract wasn't renewed for 2008?

RedDraco86

Russia was on the schedule for the 2022 season. Then the invasion happened and it was cancelled.

libsoutherner

The race was scheduled. It then didn’t happen. That’s cancelled. And seriously? That’s one of the most blasphemous comparisons I’ve seen in a while. The 2008 US GP was never on the schedule. It can’t be cancelled if it was never scheduled to happen. Can you cancel a doctors appointment you never made?

RealRacer4

F1 definitely made the right call on this from the pictures I've seen at the track. It's been such a weird start to the season for them.

AnchorDrown

They had to evacuate the track yesterday. It’s beyond a point where they can’t drive cars and is at the point where it’s actually dangerous for people to be there.

ScottRiggsFan10

If they were the superior series they would have stayed until Wednesday night to get the race in ( joke, don't get triggered ) but in all seriousness this was the right call, wonder if they'll reschedule or not.

tmndn

There is not much space on the calendar to reschedule it, so most likely won't be rescheduled.

nascarfan624

The fact people on Twitter are concerned about a race when an entire region is under water is baffling to me

michealgaribaldi

I’m more concerned about the giro d’italia

Tuxedocat1357

I just hope everything will be okay, the pictures are... not great

Blze001

Considering having the race would require both a heavy load on local infrastructure already struggling with the disaster, and F1 cars with pontoons for sections of the track, there really was only one option available.

Synotaph

As much as it sucks, good on F1. I fully expected them to pull the cars around the track on boats for a single parade lap so that they could claim the race was completed, and then give the finger to all the race fans in attendance.

PancakesandV8s

I bet F1 does not have a rain policy either.

Zodiac4v2

100% the right call.

ChaseTheFalcon

F1 did the right thing

thebigtymer

The last time I remember a race being straight-up cancelled due to flooding was [the Trans-Am race at Des Moines in 1993](https://youtu.be/1EycbTfC5gE?t=429) due to the Mississippi River floods.

[deleted]

They tried to have the race the year after, right? But also had flooding issues, and that was the end of racing the streets of downtown Des Moines. Well partly. I think money was an issue too? I live close to Des Moines now and really should research the subject a bit more.

truss458

Racing series are the true forces behind the weather, not high/low pressure systems or humidity.

Enough-Ad-3111

Yikes! They’ll probably just reschedule it to before the Italian Grand Prix right?

Solesky1

No, the promoter said it looks like they'll have a race in 2026 now (had a 3 year deal for 23-24-25) so it doesn't look like it will be rescheduled this year

thehenks2

F1 doing the right thing for once. I don't expect them to move it to another date, as there isn't really space anywhere on the calender except for the mandatory summer break. Only options there are would create 4 or 5 weeks with F1 races in a row. Teams won't accept any of these options I believe.

Moppyploppy

Rare F1 W here.

tmndn

Knowing FIA/FOM are allergic to logic, this was an unexpected good decision.

Grand_Travel2890

That sucks about the Netflix series not racing this weekend. I hope everyone is safe with the flood in Imola.

1331bob1331

What are the Full Wets for, can't even race in little puddles?!?!?!?!??!?!?! /s

mechanixrboring

Does Imola have lights? How about air titans? s/
