Dude, you own the team. Ultimately, you are responsible if they continue to underperform year after year. If it is 'someone else's fault' that the team isn't performing, you're in a position to make changes.

bcam9

Exactly. I think a lot of Smoke, but this is coming off super defensive for someone in a position to mold the company as he likes. As you said, ultimately, it does fall on him, and he doesn't like that people have been 'calling him out' so to speak. Even some of the videos and promos SHR have been releasing come off the same way.

-WhatHaveIDone-

What the hell do you think he is even mad about. Dumb little SOB runs his team down into the ground, he wants to bitch about everyone else, he’s the one who owns like a little shit. Someone needs to bust his ass. Edit: [For those who don’t get it](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=fZjai7Ti7xM)

UsedToHaveThisName

Part of owning a team is taking shit for when it doesn't go well.

Allenrw3

Seriously, what did he expect?

UsedToHaveThisName

Probably to win a bit more or finish better.

samdallmann

Part of me gets what Tony is saying and he's right. The other much bigger fan side says it's your freaking name on the side of the building, you own part of the blame too. It certainly doesn't help that people in a position of power at the company are only there because they are friends of one of the owners, looking at you Zippy, Joe Custer, and Buga. Also the crap about being at the track, you can't tell me that having Mr. H or Roger Penske or Joe Gibbs in competition meetings and at the race track doesn't help a teams morale, especially during hard times just knowing that the owner is in this with you and not in who knows where drag racing.

Equivalent_Dish_1990

And you have to remember that Penske has teams racing everywhere, and he somehow makes time for all of them.

progress10

Everywhere and often on the same day.

Hawkfan15

Hell even MJ shows up to more races than Tony.

AshleyFumbletongue

My guy, you own the team. You hire the personnel, you're responsible for their results.

Frb4

I love Tony and will cheer for this team until it dies. But your crew seeing the “S” part of SHR daily or even weekly changes the whole morale of the ship. Tony doesn’t work on the cars, or create race/qualifying setups. But he does employ the people who do. Either be there and work with your teams, or change faces there when it isn’t working. You see MJ, Justin Marks, Joe Gibbs, etc at the track most weekends. That alone boosts morale. If someone smarter than me wants to pull data and look, I’d love to see team performance (not just SHR) when the owner is present at the track vs not being there. Like, when Joe Gibbs is at the track, his driver’s average finish is X amount higher than when he’s not present.

HurricanesnHendrick

Roger Penske is a great example of what you said. He can be 4 states away working on a mother racing series and they will keep every thing in perfect order in the shop because that is what he wants. It’s a standard and sign of that moral. People with high moral live the company standards.

Helpful_Passenger_80

I admit, I always expected Tony to be very hands on, and definitely the type of guy who'd always be at the races. Maybe he's there more than I think and media just doesn't acknowledge it? I don't know... I imagine being a Top Fuel driver will probably mean he wont be around much this year.

Flying-Mollusk

Tony my dude, you own the damn team, plain and simple. Your name is on the side of the building, so you should take at least some responsibility for how poorly it’s performing. Race team employees don’t like an absentee owner. So either step up and work with your team to improve the four cars or sell it to someone who will.

Phenomenal_Hoot

My brother in Christ, your name is on the cars. How do you expect NOT to share some of the blame.

TheGargageMan

The main driver change I can think of is replacing Kevin Harvick.

HenryJBemis

No. You also have Noah Gragson replacing Aric Almirola. Which I can think of a reason to be optimistic about that one. Aric’s heart hasn’t been in racing cup for a couple years. Noah is hungry to prove himself at the cup level. You could somewhat say the same about Berry and Harvick though.

Specialist_Usual1524

It’s gonna be a rough road for Noah, I think the kid will figure it out, but he needs to understand he isn’t a big dog anymore.

HenryJBemis

I would hope he had realized that and will just focus on getting as good a finish as the equipment will give him. And not trying to get more than it’s capable of. Cup is pretty humbling for most drivers when they first move up.

Specialist_Usual1524

He needs Corey as a mentor.

BusinessWarthog6

For someone that drove and was criticized Tony has some thin skin

RBF48

I wonder if the rumors of him not being there and his office is mostly empty is true?

ChaseTheFalcon

Look I get why he says this since he isn't actually working on the cars, but you own the team, it's your job to take the blame and FIX the problem, not bitch about the criticism

Mkg60

He and Gene were never there. I spoke with an employee who said they were very disorganized! Who was making all of the important decisions. He was too busy running all of his other ventures. And this season his attention is on him running the whole drag racing season. So who should we blame if you underperform again???

meekIobraca2024

Last time I checked Tony’s name was the S in SHR, tough shit dude. But an unsurprising attitude for anybody who paid attention to him over the years

BrutifulMemphis

“I’m tired of taking the blame when the company I own isn’t running well”

NormalDrop561

Something tells me Tony doesn't have a mirror in his home.

Caniac1017

Lost what little respect I had for Stewart. The dude is a complete 🤡 and just proved what a horrible leader he is with what he said.

Vette_Vengeance

Why would the driver changes have him optimistic? Both new drivers are significant downgrades compared to the previous drivers.

WON95sr

There's a chance Gragson may have a higher ceiling than Almirola, but Almirola was consistent, experienced (which helps tune the car), and tended to bring the car back in one piece. If Tony sees potential in Gragson then he can be optimistic even if it's an immediate downgrade. However, if I were Tony I'd feel much better if Gragson was able to learn under Harvick and Almirola. While the other three are experienced, they're all still pretty new to Cup.  I think Berry can do a good job, but replacing Harvick was going to be a net loss no matter what.

redditorus99

You could replace Harvick with Kyle Larson and it would arguably be a downgrade. Harvick has outperformed his teammates by such a wide margin since joining SHR... even when that teammate is someone like Kurt Busch. And you can't really say Harvick declined when he still put up the best season of any SHR driver by a MASSIVE margin the last few years. Arguably Harvick's 2023 season is more impressive than his championship season when you compare to his own teammates.

AgentofChaos17

Welcome to the wonderful world of being in charge. If someone in your organization messes up, it is still your fault, even if you had nothing to do with it. Wins are shared with everyone involved, but you are ultimately responsible for any failures as the leader.

BabycakesMurphy

No one is inspired to work for the boss that is never at the office. And there’s nothing quite like finger pointing when it’s going wrong. That makes it even better.

epzik8

Death, taxes, and Tony Stewart giving polarizing takes.

Intimidwalls1724

Damn tony lol. Hes sick of hearing yalls shit Truthfully criticize him if you want for saying it but this is Tony being Tony, if this surprises you you have paid attention to him all these years

progress10

He is the boss, I don't see him going in there and firing Zippy for sucking at his job.

Intimidwalls1724

That's not what I'm saying What I'm saying is for better or worse Tony is opinionated and he is not likely to blame himself. He's heard a lot of talk for a long time and being Tony he's gonna say something about it I'm not saying he's right

Capstonetider

Take responsibility and sell hope. That's what most franchise owners I've observed do.

tmritzert

Did he think owning a race team would not come with down years and criticism?
