"Fucking Ryan!" and then after that whole crazy run "Haha! Can't see shit!" lol He was so good all day. After he got the lap back and restarted like 22nd or whatever I think it took him like 20 laps or someting to get to top 5. Great work by the spotter too

i_hate_shitposting

Yeah, when they restarted on lap 205, he was 22nd. By the end of the lap, he was up to 18th. He broke into the top 10 on lap 226, got to 5th on lap 233, and after that he never dropped below 7th place.

thegodfaubel

If Bubba didn't have that fucked up splitter, there's a legit chance there could've been a 4 wide finish at the line

mrogersj5

Was really fun following Bubba on Sunday. He got caught up in the wreck lap 2 and the front looked pretty rough. He kept laying back and staying out of 3 wide situations and messy spots in stages 1 and 2, enough that I kept joking about it in texts with friends. Their pit strategy seemed to go very well in stage 2 if not for Bubba speeding - I was shocked to see him come out in the top 10. When he went a lap down, I figured the race was over. I couldn't see him getting free pass ahead of Busch, Chastain, or Stenhouse. He and Chastain were absolutely going for it on this run and it was shocking to me because I really thought his car was too damaged. Turned out he didn't have race leading speed, but that was the kind of race that would have been a 20th for Bubba 2 years ago.

SBMVPJustinHerbert

This. Odds just kept stacking against him and he kept his head up and got a top 5 out of it. If he can keep this mentality all year, he’s a Ro8 contender. That’s always been his biggest challenge and it looks like he’s in a much better place.

OatmealForever

I am new to NASCAR, so sorry for the newbie question, but what’s ‘free pass position’ mean in this situation? Is it because, among those down a lap, Bubba is in the best position at the time of the caution, so he gets that catch up lap?

i_hate_shitposting

That's correct. It's also known as the [beneficiary rule](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beneficiary_rule) or lucky dog.

hondajvx

Was it lucky dog before Aaron's sponsored it? If not that's got to be some of the best money spent, we still call it lucky dog.

Yoshiman400

Yes. Benny Parsons said it a few times as such; I believe it started because Jimmy Spencer (then sponsored by Sirius) had received it one time and BP had a good look at the dog on the hood of his car.

Yessir

OatmealForever

That’s awesome.

FirstGT

A little additional context, it used to be a driver had to race back to the start/finish line to get their lap back. So as leader and others on lead lap were slowed or slowing to pace lap speeds when a caution came out, anyone who was close enough to be in position to reach the start line prior to the leader was able to race for an attempt to get their lap back. It's been so long I don't recall exactly but I think only the first person would get it back.  When the rule first changed I thought it was dumb. No real reason probably other than "tradition". But now when I watch an old race where they race back, it just seems so dangerous.

sjhesketh

He’s so good at these tracks and seeing him move up like that is super intense and interesting. No wonder he said he was mentally exhausted after the race. That’s some damn difficult stuff.

xHospitalHorsex

Damn this was engrossing. Bubba was honestly way more patient than I would have been. I kept looking low for him to scoot out and try to take a run on his own but he just kept carving his own path. Crazy impressive.

Moppyploppy

Can we take a second to appreciate that, despite how much flack the guy gets and it's a meme to make fun of him sometimes, Freddie is _really_ damn good at his job.

Hawkfan15

I started listening to the radios because of Bubba, but Freddie is really who I'm tuning in to listen to every week now. I know you're probably reading this Freddie so just wanna say you fucking rule.

FreddieKraft

Thanks to you both. 🤙🏻

JRRTokeKing

Seeing you help Bubba get that free pass was so fun! One of my favorite moments of the race.

Cezar_Chavez

On DBC they talk about painting the picture of the pack, and it is WILD to see it in real time here. They have to be 95% in sync because of how instant all of the moves are. I don’t think I heard the gas let up either, just briefly when the car in front of Bubba scraped the wall.

ugafan2148

Watching the battle from the lucky dog after the green flag pit cycle was honestly my favorite part of the race besides the last lap. Every single one of them were balls to the walls going for it

boxingrock

marshallwithmesa

Am I missing something? Is it my Busch-tinted glasses or is this not really egregious?

boxingrock

kyle definitely put him in a tough aero spot but grala and his spotter had like 4 seconds to not leave enough space to fit a car on the inside. egregious is ross punting chase into 3.

Best_Limit5882

The way Bubba navigates these drafting-style tracks reminds me so much of Jr. It's hard for me to explain it, but the way he manipulates the air between the cars around him is truly a form of art. I'm not saying Bubba is as good as Jr on superspeedways, but their driving style on these tracks are almost identical. I think he can "see the air" as Sr. would put it

skeenek

It’s hard for you to explain because it is not based in reality. I’m all for Bubba and he’s definitely a really good plate racer, but what a dumb thing to say.

JoshEvolved

You could have just not replied instead of being a jerk. lol

Best_Limit5882

It's just what I see with my eyes. It's like saying Josh Allen's arm reminds me of Aaron Rodgers, and if you think that's a dumb thing to say then that's cool

Best_Limit5882

I never said anything about results, I'm just comparing driving styles

gasmask11000

He *is* statistically the best driver at Daytona (judged by average finish over the last 10 races), and has been for a while.

i_hate_shitposting

By a significant margin, too. Bubba's average finish is 12.4 and the next closest is Bowman at 15.2. And since 2021 his average is 9.9 and he's never finished outside the top 20, which is insane.

Best_Limit5882

I actually didn't know that, but that stat doesn't shock me. He's gonna get his "full distance" win soon, and I guess they'll just have to find another way to downplay it

Impossumbear

Hey Freddie, you need a raise brother. Incredible work, both of you.

Francesa-DietCoke

He gets a lot of shit. And yes, he brings some of it on himself. But Bubba is really an underrated talent. He has great wreck avoidance skills and was really impressive on Sunday.

dedhead54

Hell of a drive here. I seriously think Bubba has a shot at winning a couple of races this year. The guy has continued to improve year over year.

grovenab

im hoping that racing in the IMPC has given him more road course potential especiallyfor the playoffs this year

colterpierce

His car was trash the last two laps. Could not keep the low line.

That_Damn_Tall_Guy

Once he got clean air on his nose his car was dogshit. Cause his splitter was all the way fucked. But if he coulda kept on bumper running full throttle he’d have been fine

montrevux

did the tweet get deleted?

i_hate_shitposting

Still loads fine for me, even in incognito tabs.
