I still need to get the model but I’m holding out hope that he and Orikan will be getting new ones with our codex. Honestly would be a dream come true for good rules and good model for the duo.

Infinite and the Divine is truly one of the best 40k books ever written. The Twice Dead King Trilogy is pretty dang good as well. And those are the main Necron books that come to mind but they all are 8-9 out of 10 books imo. Except Infinite and the Divine it’s a 12 out of 10.

When he showed me necrons i felt like James Workshop himself read my brain and made the perfect creation to siphon as much money from my wallet as possible
The first two Terminator films were a big influence in my decision, and of course Spooky Scary Skeletons.
Lore wise, they’re the only race immune to the Tyranids, so once the Nids have eaten most of the galaxy, the Necrons will just get the filthy bugs out of their yard and rule what is rightfully theirs again.
Quick question: I have played several rounds with necrons against my son(7) and a friend. I have lost every round so far and was wondering what other people's success rate was with recruit necrons? I am still trying to understand the rules and know the 10th edition is around the corner so we skip the morale phase, but aside from that I am trying to adhere to the rules.
I've recently learned that if you want to win playing necrons, one of the best strategies is to go melee.

Two squads of six skorpekh destroyers
One technomancer
One canoptek Spyder
3 scarab swarms
Now castle them up and charge down the field.
Just need another few full units and I am there. Sadly I am tapped out of resources and must go mine some more minerals.
But with melee, what about lych guard and flayers?
Well if your using cover, deploy behind it so you hopefully don't get wiped turn 1, secondly either deploy a flank of scarabs or keep them in front to protect your warriors, if you built them as reapers advance in with your warden, flayers? Stay slowly move up behind your scarabs, warden buffing them. It may be slightly scaled towards the space Marines but I don't remember well as I have played with only those.
If you have recruit edition, don't forget that royal warden can enable 1 core unit (warriors in this case) to fall back and shoot after that (withput any penalties). Also don't forget to use ressurection protocols and desintegration capacitors stratagem (1CP 6 to hit = auto wound) every shooting phase. Another thing to mention is dynasties, there are plenty of them, but you need mephrit one, which gives you +3" to range of weapons and +1AP on half range. When mustering your army, you can give a relic to one character for free, mephrit dynasty royal warden can be equiped with conduit of stars ( 36" rapid fire 3 6S -2AP 2D). On rapid fire range this weapon has a chance to wipe assault interchessors squad. I hope this will help you to win next time
Edit: there is also self-destruction stratagem (1 CP in fight phase remove friendly scarab model from game, select enemy unit in engagement range of removed model and roll d6, on 2-5 selected unit suffers d3 mortal wounds, on 6 it suffers 3 mortal wounds)

For me it was a mix of some of the models, namely the Lychguard, the Deathmarks, Skorpekh and ophydian destroyers and the silent king.
As well as the background, to me the Necrons have this Lovecraftian-Feeling due to their age and Power and I just love that!
Also they are not too difficult to paint but offer a great variety of nice paint schemes…
They seemed cooler than other factions. I'm a sucker for these things:
1: Ancient and impossibly advanced aliens
2: Robotic legions
3: Cosmic horror
Naturally, Necrons fit like a glove.
My son was allowed to pick any 40K army he wanted and he chose Necrons bc the loved the models and their reanimation protocols. He chose a cool theme for his army (that I get to paint:) ) and he likes how the play as well.
Lore: probably one of the grimdarker factions, very sympathetic imo, and their big man actually had a moment of self awareness. In a moment where he was potentially in complete control of the strongest military force that was -ever- in the galaxy, he willingly stepped down (sort of) and destroyed returned (limited) free will to (some) subjects. Big E could never.
Tabletop: 3's and 4's to hit, common 3+ saves and invulns, lots of AP, and we're not even space marines? Hell yeah, it's bone time baby
Many moons ago, before the war in heaven there was a white dwarf and they gave you a free warrior.
And i couldn't have just one warrior.
Of course back then armies were like 20 models tops so it was much cheaper to start a new force.
When I was a kid I played Dawn of War and that got me interested in starting 40k so I looked through one of the catalogues they used to put out to see which armies there were and I thought the Necrons looked the coolest so I chose them for my first army.
Space Necromancers! I always liked undead in Fantasy. I just thought it was so creative how they created Necrons. I loved the Reanimation rules. Not because it was good back in 7th but I really loved the thought of brining my guys back to life.
For me, it’s how utterly insignificant they make everything else feel.
These things are ancient - they were riding high when the dinosaurs still roamed the earth. Their technology makes everyone else, save for the Aeldari, look like chimps. They enslaved an entire pantheon of gods. They give the laws of physics the middle finger. You get the idea.
The horror aspect is really cool to me, too. As earthquakes wrack the planet, they claw their way out of the ground and march upon the living. Their huge, monolithic structures and seething swarms of scarabs blot out the sun and cast a dark, eerie glow over said planet. Every trace of your civilization is ground to dust beneath their feet. This whole shtick is probably a bit hyperbolic, but just the thought of impossibly-ancient, hopelessly-powerful legions upon legions of silent, emotionless killers vibing below your planet is a pretty spooky idea I think.
Also, robot horror is great, and I think the Necrons epitomize it. They remind me of a lot of my favorite robot horror movies/shorts/books, eg. *Terminator* & *The Walten Files*.
I made a joke about if the Silent King ever came back I'd paint up some pink Necrons. Then like a month later, they teased his comeback.
Now I own 12000 points of Necrons. Many are pink, many more to go.
Back in the day when a lot of models were metal and came in blister packs the Necron ones stood out from the rest due to the bright green rods included.
Having grown up watching the Terminator at 7 and being heavily into Egyptian mythology and history just made the choice easier.
I saw the lychguard and hadn’t seen any models since that have made me as excited to play on the table. Their design is absolutely amazing and I love them.
Was torn between a couple of factions to play for my first army, and I ended up impulse deciding Necrons over the others. Started reading the lore for these guys and never looked back.
Was my first army. Had little to no idea about anything in 40k. Went for Necron, because over all models in an army I liked the Necron asthetics the most.
At the very very start, my goal was always to collect and paint Admech. Particularly Belisarius Cawl. However, I feared that I would fuck up the paint or the building even and so I thought "okay, I'll learn with another faction, simpler to paint and so on, then I'll come back to Admech".
So I thought about SM, Custodes, stuff like that.
Then I learned about buddyboy Trazyn.
And then I read The Infinite and The Divine.
And that was at the start of 9th, when Nécrons got a brand spanking new kit update.
In the end, I did get back to Admech, and I did paint that Belisarius Cawl, but now both robot factions are my pride and joy, so I never did "choose" Nécrons, they came onto me and share the spotlight as my favourites with our boys in red.
It was the army I was going to start when I was a kid. Then I stopped with the hobby, but when I started again as an adult I decided to start with them :)
And I like their lore a lot. The way they always plan ahead thousands of years.
I am a big history buff, and even thou other factions have their inspiration from real histrionic things. Necrons are much more into there historical inspiration than anyone else. Also love the idea of resurrection in any form.
They looked cool and came in starter set. I was going to play death guard but then I looked around to find the Necron lore because they were pretty cheap in the starter set. I instantly fell in love with the lore. I chose the Nihilakh because because of our favorite meme lord Trazyn the infinite.
My friend described 40k to me as the empires soldiers are fighting against an army of very angry robots who are older than the sun, qnd also just appear wherever they want, and i said damn i wish you could play the robots. And here we are
My friend got me into it right as the pandemic started. I knew nothing about 40k. Talked with a store owner over each of the factions and decided on necron for 2 reasons.
1. Robots are cool
2. Figured standing back up would help my newbie ass from getting stomped. Considered it help for my handicap. Lol
The MtG deck sold me on the broad flavor of their aesthetics, add in the terminator vibes plus “we killed the old gods, plus our own gods” angle and the Egypt flavor on top and I was sold
Honestly.... I work in IT and i figure if I always say thank you to the bank macine, the fridge, the microwave and I paint atleast 1 full army of Necrons.
When the AI murder hots take over they'll hopefully remember I was the nice human and leave me the wife and cat alone to live out a nice life......
Honestly I just didn’t really like the aesthetic of many other armies. Years later I’ve learned to appreciate the other models but at the time I though guardsmen seemed tame and boring space marines were overwhelmingly bland.
Tyranids I know I couldn’t handle painting those models
Same with chaos seemed too much of a stretch for me.
But something about the necrons terminator sci-fi nerd in me fell in love with them. And the Egyptian thematics for some reason work so well with this undying robotic legion. It’s just fit with me. Then I started playing with them and really liked how well they played on the table.
I got the Indomitus box years later and my second army is ultra marines now. Decent
It was last year. I wanted to get into 40K and saw the worldscour box. I mainly chose based on how cool the doomstalker looked. I also really like the idea of ancient tomb worlds reawakening from under the surface of thousands of planets (it is very Lovecraftian and I love Lovecraft).
Was big into d&d and other ttg's so my friend brought out his Tyranid collection and asked if I wanted to learn. Tried out a few of his little space Marines and Orks against them and thought rules were interesting. Next thing I know I'm buying a start collecting box because the Lychguard was the coolest looking models in the store. They quickly became my favored faction lore wise and visually. All of this a decade ago now
We got the Elite Box for Christmas…and my kids claimed the Space Marines.
Jokes on them. I wanted Necrons anyway (well…after I learned about them).
Believe it or not, I may be expanding and building/painting/playing a Tyranids model in the near future.

I only got into 40K with 9th Ed. A mate of mine bought Indomitus & offered me the Necron half. I hadn’t played any tabletop games since Warhammer Fantasy Battle back in the 90’s & thought it would be fun.
That was, of course the start of my addiction to plastic crack…
I can’t say I definitely would have picked Necrons if I hadn’t been offered that set but they’re now very much my shiny metal bois & will always be my main faction.
I play Death (Soulblight Gravelords mostly) in Age of Sigmar. Love the necromantic, reanimation bizz of Death so it was a natural move over to Necron. I ALSO love the terrifying eldritch themes around their grasp of the material universe.
DoW Dark Crusade and more importantly the other half of my 40K entry via the command edition. Their design just stuck with me. Also beginner friendly armor to paint. But not so easy to assemble 😅
I got a free one on WD, as did my friends who had no interest in them. So I got 6 for free and have been collecting them ever since. They appealed to my love of the undead, which was my WFB army at the time.
It came down to elder or necrons. I liked how focused the elder were and in control of their feeling. I also liked how the necrons killed the star gods and the old ones and abandoned their flesh. I first picked up elder minis and found out I paid full price for 20 year old models, I abandoned them pretty quick and went for the new indomitus set with the push fit.
Because of the imperium mag, it was a cheap way to pick up an army and I was able to take advantage getting multiple copies and back issues.
Been having fun painting them and has reinvigorated me to keep painting. Been able to try crazy colours instead of painting a faction colour consistently. Will be my new army going into tenth as my other is chaos be nice to switch between two.
To be honest I wanted to start with Orks but my brother got the indomitus box for the Marines and I didn't have an army so said fuck it why not. I definitely enjoy the Necrons more now that I've played multiple factions

Lots of reasons to love ‘em, but what made it click for me was reading the lore about the Phaerons becoming increasingly eccentric and suffering from dementia.
My friends were trying to get me into the game, and they wrote down a few words summary of each faction.
For Necrons, they wrote "undead zombie robots"

My mate wanted to start playing again after twenty years and wanted to play Dark Angels. We went halves on the starter kit and I ended up gifting him the marines half for his birthday. I didn’t mind the Necrons but they weren’t my first choice. He ended up building one and has so far made no more progress. Saying I’m knee deep at this point is an understatement. Im starting to think the hobby is the buying more than the building, painting and playing…
The draw for me was just how old they are. The concept of a foe more ancient than the earth itself with technology that the AdMech still has wet dreams over was just too appealing. Then I learned about Trazyn and his gay lover, and the rest is history
I had loved them for a long while (they were my main in dark crusade), but I really took the plunge with indomitus, a Christmas battleforce, and hatchette magazines getting me a full collection on the cheap.
I got into 40k lore before playing the tabletop. As soon as I learned their were undead god killing robots I couldn't understand why you'd choose anything else.
As I dug deeper and started pondering the lore it is in my opinion that the grand over arching story that is the grimdark universe (is at least so far) the necrons story. There in the beginning. Took a bunch of Ls. Befriended and given a gift. Betrayed. Wounded. Healing. And now back again for a rightful victory. It's the heros journey
Cause they dominate the fucking galaxy!! They truly don’t give a fuck. They are true gangsters. Best tech ever. Oh AND, they don’t start shit, they END it. The galaxy in time will belong to them and them alone again.
I think undead factions are underrated in fiction its always demins who are the baddies in most fantasy worlds.
Necrons are basiaclly the undead faction in 40k and they are cool.

Went to warhammer shop to buy my sister a mini for Christmas, had decided I wouldn't be getting sucked into warhammer, but then I saw the void dragon and had to know what faction that was apart of.
Then I deep dove into necrons and found that the reviving robots was straight up my alley and the rest is a silver and orange blur haha
Me and my brother started playing Kill Team. I mainly played Grey Knights but one day I forgot them when we were going to play at our LGS. I quickly grabbed a box of Immortals and a Technomancer to build and they became my favorite faction within a day
Because weapons that automatically wound on a 6, or score a penetrating hit on a 6, and dissolve the bonds of matter on impact is bad ass.
I started in 3rd edition.
The third edition Black book. There was just something that itched my brain and the most pleasant way when you describe an empire of immortal killing machines that are slowly starting to wake up and no one knows anything about them. You'll get small, confused reports from across the galaxy and anytime you go do go investigate the origin of those reports, it is always followed by mysterious disappearances or horrific, methodical murder.
You don't know where the threat could be, how many or how powerful. You just know that *it can't die*.
Back before I knew what warhammer was my dad heard I was interested in wargaming and asked some of his coworkers who played if I could come watch. During the setup (never got to actually see them play had to leave but I'm pretty sure one was crons, think I saw a ghost ark) I heard them talk about some cool artwork, describing it ".....someone glowing green getting their arm shot off, as energy was pulling it back on healing then as they are dying...." and that sounded really cool. A few years later I asked a friend of mine who was into warhammer if he had any idea what it was as I never actually saw the picture, he told me about the necrons and it just kicked off from there. "Love at first sight" type thing.
My brother got the elite edition and I just kinda leeched off the Necrons.
However, I do love the flavour of decrepit robot zombies marching up the field and have laughed maniacally my fair share of times as I reanimated far too many Necron warriors
Lore and the og warriors were the first miniatures I'd ever gotten and painted. When the 9th edition came, I was overjoyed due to all of the new sculpts and bought a lot!
Friend convinced me to play after I'd mentioned playing dawn of war for a bit back in the day. He just said, 'if you dot know which army to pick just do the rule of cool, if you like the look of the army then you'll probably have fun'. So yeah, the looked the coolest therefore, Rule of cool
The magic the gathering deck that came out for necrons, got me thinking of how cool they were. Looked up some lore for them, thought it was some of the coolest I’ve read. Then I was hooked.
It was them or thousand sons and my friend saw the store had the command box. I took the necrons and terrain and he took the space marines and the rules. I thought the necrons were cool lookin, and the store had a discounted box of wraiths so I grabbed that too.
I actually just got my first few thousand sons last week. Still want some space marines at some point too. Lotta cool shit in the franchise ngl
When I was with a buddy of mine we went to the local Games Workkshop store because he wanted to pick up something and I was along for the ride. The manager of the store ran a display game with me and it was fun but the prices were very steep for me at the time. Eventually after doing all the tutorials, painting
On the free space marine, and talking about it a bit with my friends who were all getting into 40k I took my time and looked at all the armies on the shelf and the necrons seemed the best looking and easiest to paint. So I picked up a box of the necron warriors the ones before the 9th edition version came out. I Despised building them because it hurt my fingers to push the spines in place and balance the upper bodies on the legs.... but as ninth edition came around the corner and I delved deeper into the lore after building a whole other army. I just loved every bit when someone came up to me and told me how dumb this thing is in game or in the lore about the necrons I just thought wow I like the necrons that much more.
They seemed easy enough to paint for a beginner while also having a high skill ceiling so I could keep getting better. I also really like the vibe of undead horror from the ancient past but also robot
I was always more interested in the more 'technological' factions and wanted to start with admech but the starter boxes had necrons and they looked pretty cool so I split one with a friend and started to love them more and more after painting some and discovering the model lineup and lore, and reading the necron novels just sealed the deal for me

Undead Egyptian robots were right up my alley. Been playing them since 3rd. I miss the pariahs, but not the phase out rule lol.
Maybe we can get them back in 10th from what I understood what the necrons are doing in the pariah nexus.

Lore: probably one of the grimdarker factions, very sympathetic imo, and their big man actually had a moment of self awareness. In a moment where he was potentially in complete control of the strongest military force that was -ever- in the galaxy, he willingly stepped down (sort of) and destroyed returned (limited) free will to (some) subjects. Big E could never. Tabletop: 3's and 4's to hit, common 3+ saves and invulns, lots of AP, and we're not even space marines? Hell yeah, it's bone time baby

Many moons ago, before the war in heaven there was a white dwarf and they gave you a free warrior. And i couldn't have just one warrior. Of course back then armies were like 20 models tops so it was much cheaper to start a new force.

When I was a kid I played Dawn of War and that got me interested in starting 40k so I looked through one of the catalogues they used to put out to see which armies there were and I thought the Necrons looked the coolest so I chose them for my first army.

Space Necromancers! I always liked undead in Fantasy. I just thought it was so creative how they created Necrons. I loved the Reanimation rules. Not because it was good back in 7th but I really loved the thought of brining my guys back to life.
I’m a painter not a player and I absolutely love the sculpts and their look!
For me, it’s how utterly insignificant they make everything else feel. These things are ancient - they were riding high when the dinosaurs still roamed the earth. Their technology makes everyone else, save for the Aeldari, look like chimps. They enslaved an entire pantheon of gods. They give the laws of physics the middle finger. You get the idea. The horror aspect is really cool to me, too. As earthquakes wrack the planet, they claw their way out of the ground and march upon the living. Their huge, monolithic structures and seething swarms of scarabs blot out the sun and cast a dark, eerie glow over said planet. Every trace of your civilization is ground to dust beneath their feet. This whole shtick is probably a bit hyperbolic, but just the thought of impossibly-ancient, hopelessly-powerful legions upon legions of silent, emotionless killers vibing below your planet is a pretty spooky idea I think. Also, robot horror is great, and I think the Necrons epitomize it. They remind me of a lot of my favorite robot horror movies/shorts/books, eg. *Terminator* & *The Walten Files*.
This. Especially the enslaving a pantheon of gods after they were tricked into slavery by them, just so supremely cool and badass.
I made a joke about if the Silent King ever came back I'd paint up some pink Necrons. Then like a month later, they teased his comeback. Now I own 12000 points of Necrons. Many are pink, many more to go.

Back in the day when a lot of models were metal and came in blister packs the Necron ones stood out from the rest due to the bright green rods included. Having grown up watching the Terminator at 7 and being heavily into Egyptian mythology and history just made the choice easier.

I saw the lychguard and hadn’t seen any models since that have made me as excited to play on the table. Their design is absolutely amazing and I love them.

At the very very start, my goal was always to collect and paint Admech. Particularly Belisarius Cawl. However, I feared that I would fuck up the paint or the building even and so I thought "okay, I'll learn with another faction, simpler to paint and so on, then I'll come back to Admech". So I thought about SM, Custodes, stuff like that. Then I learned about buddyboy Trazyn. And then I read The Infinite and The Divine. And that was at the start of 9th, when Nécrons got a brand spanking new kit update. In the end, I did get back to Admech, and I did paint that Belisarius Cawl, but now both robot factions are my pride and joy, so I never did "choose" Nécrons, they came onto me and share the spotlight as my favourites with our boys in red.
It was the army I was going to start when I was a kid. Then I stopped with the hobby, but when I started again as an adult I decided to start with them :) And I like their lore a lot. The way they always plan ahead thousands of years.

I am a big history buff, and even thou other factions have their inspiration from real histrionic things. Necrons are much more into there historical inspiration than anyone else. Also love the idea of resurrection in any form.

They looked cool and came in starter set. I was going to play death guard but then I looked around to find the Necron lore because they were pretty cheap in the starter set. I instantly fell in love with the lore. I chose the Nihilakh because because of our favorite meme lord Trazyn the infinite.

Second edition crons in 5th edition brought me such cool mechanics and I loved Pariahs. I learned all the lore and never left!
Space terminators is what I thought when I first saw them in 2007 in Chicago while I was stationed there.
My friend got me into it right as the pandemic started. I knew nothing about 40k. Talked with a store owner over each of the factions and decided on necron for 2 reasons. 1. Robots are cool 2. Figured standing back up would help my newbie ass from getting stomped. Considered it help for my handicap. Lol
The MtG deck sold me on the broad flavor of their aesthetics, add in the terminator vibes plus “we killed the old gods, plus our own gods” angle and the Egypt flavor on top and I was sold
Honestly.... I work in IT and i figure if I always say thank you to the bank macine, the fridge, the microwave and I paint atleast 1 full army of Necrons. When the AI murder hots take over they'll hopefully remember I was the nice human and leave me the wife and cat alone to live out a nice life......
Honestly I just didn’t really like the aesthetic of many other armies. Years later I’ve learned to appreciate the other models but at the time I though guardsmen seemed tame and boring space marines were overwhelmingly bland. Tyranids I know I couldn’t handle painting those models Same with chaos seemed too much of a stretch for me. But something about the necrons terminator sci-fi nerd in me fell in love with them. And the Egyptian thematics for some reason work so well with this undying robotic legion. It’s just fit with me. Then I started playing with them and really liked how well they played on the table. I got the Indomitus box years later and my second army is ultra marines now. Decent
I got the starter set, I absolutely love the models, especially wraiths, and being able to resurrect all of my units is just sick
Dawn of War: Dark Crusade.
It was last year. I wanted to get into 40K and saw the worldscour box. I mainly chose based on how cool the doomstalker looked. I also really like the idea of ancient tomb worlds reawakening from under the surface of thousands of planets (it is very Lovecraftian and I love Lovecraft).
Got them for Christmas when they had a refresh in 5th edition then restarted with the Indomitus box 🙏

Was big into d&d and other ttg's so my friend brought out his Tyranid collection and asked if I wanted to learn. Tried out a few of his little space Marines and Orks against them and thought rules were interesting. Next thing I know I'm buying a start collecting box because the Lychguard was the coolest looking models in the store. They quickly became my favored faction lore wise and visually. All of this a decade ago now
They were new and powerful and I was like 10 or 11. Also their original lore was cool.
BECAUSE THEY DESERVED BETTER AND WERE RUDELY TOLD TO FUCK OFF BY THE OLD ONES WHO COULD HAVE EASILY HELPED THEM DIE LESS AND JUST DECIDED NOT TO!!! 😠

My friends introduced me to the game and called them Egyptian Terminator Mummies...I was down after that 😆
We got the Elite Box for Christmas…and my kids claimed the Space Marines. Jokes on them. I wanted Necrons anyway (well…after I learned about them). Believe it or not, I may be expanding and building/painting/playing a Tyranids model in the near future.

I didn’t, Necrons chose me. I only got into 40K with 9th Ed. A mate of mine bought Indomitus & offered me the Necron half. I hadn’t played any tabletop games since Warhammer Fantasy Battle back in the 90’s & thought it would be fun. That was, of course the start of my addiction to plastic crack… I can’t say I definitely would have picked Necrons if I hadn’t been offered that set but they’re now very much my shiny metal bois & will always be my main faction.

I play Death (Soulblight Gravelords mostly) in Age of Sigmar. Love the necromantic, reanimation bizz of Death so it was a natural move over to Necron. I ALSO love the terrifying eldritch themes around their grasp of the material universe.
The Terminator. Literally, that's what sold it to me. The idea of an army of mechanical robot space skeletons with disintegrators just sounds badass.
Dawn of War: Dark Crusade made me fall in love with them
DoW Dark Crusade and more importantly the other half of my 40K entry via the command edition. Their design just stuck with me. Also beginner friendly armor to paint. But not so easy to assemble 😅

I got a free one on WD, as did my friends who had no interest in them. So I got 6 for free and have been collecting them ever since. They appealed to my love of the undead, which was my WFB army at the time.

It came down to elder or necrons. I liked how focused the elder were and in control of their feeling. I also liked how the necrons killed the star gods and the old ones and abandoned their flesh. I first picked up elder minis and found out I paid full price for 20 year old models, I abandoned them pretty quick and went for the new indomitus set with the push fit.
I saw issue 2 of imperium in a shop and thought I’d give Warhammer a go, it had Necrons in and so I stuck with them. I’m quite pleased I did
Midwinter Minis sandcron theme got me interested in getting a nice sandy diorama part of my bookshelf
Because of the imperium mag, it was a cheap way to pick up an army and I was able to take advantage getting multiple copies and back issues. Been having fun painting them and has reinvigorated me to keep painting. Been able to try crazy colours instead of painting a faction colour consistently. Will be my new army going into tenth as my other is chaos be nice to switch between two.
To be honest I wanted to start with Orks but my brother got the indomitus box for the Marines and I didn't have an army so said fuck it why not. I definitely enjoy the Necrons more now that I've played multiple factions
Honestly? I love the monolith and I got Into the hobby at the start of 9th by splitting the Indom box so it was natural to keep collecting the army. Especially once the imperium magazine came out. Necrons have been the cheapest army to collect so I stuck with them
I like the droid army from starwars but i like the warhammer setting more. I think necrons have a ton of room for hilarious dark humor.

Lots of reasons to love ‘em, but what made it click for me was reading the lore about the Phaerons becoming increasingly eccentric and suffering from dementia.

My mate wanted to start playing again after twenty years and wanted to play Dark Angels. We went halves on the starter kit and I ended up gifting him the marines half for his birthday. I didn’t mind the Necrons but they weren’t my first choice. He ended up building one and has so far made no more progress. Saying I’m knee deep at this point is an understatement. Im starting to think the hobby is the buying more than the building, painting and playing…
Space Marines don't really appeal to me. Necrons have a backstory I can sympathize with.
The draw for me was just how old they are. The concept of a foe more ancient than the earth itself with technology that the AdMech still has wet dreams over was just too appealing. Then I learned about Trazyn and his gay lover, and the rest is history

I got into 40k lore before playing the tabletop. As soon as I learned their were undead god killing robots I couldn't understand why you'd choose anything else. As I dug deeper and started pondering the lore it is in my opinion that the grand over arching story that is the grimdark universe (is at least so far) the necrons story. There in the beginning. Took a bunch of Ls. Befriended and given a gift. Betrayed. Wounded. Healing. And now back again for a rightful victory. It's the heros journey

I think undead factions are underrated in fiction its always demins who are the baddies in most fantasy worlds. Necrons are basiaclly the undead faction in 40k and they are cool.

Void Dragon Went to warhammer shop to buy my sister a mini for Christmas, had decided I wouldn't be getting sucked into warhammer, but then I saw the void dragon and had to know what faction that was apart of. Then I deep dove into necrons and found that the reviving robots was straight up my alley and the rest is a silver and orange blur haha

Me and my brother started playing Kill Team. I mainly played Grey Knights but one day I forgot them when we were going to play at our LGS. I quickly grabbed a box of Immortals and a Technomancer to build and they became my favorite faction within a day
Because weapons that automatically wound on a 6, or score a penetrating hit on a 6, and dissolve the bonds of matter on impact is bad ass. I started in 3rd edition.
Easy to paint
The third edition Black book. There was just something that itched my brain and the most pleasant way when you describe an empire of immortal killing machines that are slowly starting to wake up and no one knows anything about them. You'll get small, confused reports from across the galaxy and anytime you go do go investigate the origin of those reports, it is always followed by mysterious disappearances or horrific, methodical murder. You don't know where the threat could be, how many or how powerful. You just know that *it can't die*.

Back before I knew what warhammer was my dad heard I was interested in wargaming and asked some of his coworkers who played if I could come watch. During the setup (never got to actually see them play had to leave but I'm pretty sure one was crons, think I saw a ghost ark) I heard them talk about some cool artwork, describing it ".....someone glowing green getting their arm shot off, as energy was pulling it back on healing then as they are dying...." and that sounded really cool. A few years later I asked a friend of mine who was into warhammer if he had any idea what it was as I never actually saw the picture, he told me about the necrons and it just kicked off from there. "Love at first sight" type thing.

My brother got the elite edition and I just kinda leeched off the Necrons. However, I do love the flavour of decrepit robot zombies marching up the field and have laughed maniacally my fair share of times as I reanimated far too many Necron warriors

Lore and the og warriors were the first miniatures I'd ever gotten and painted. When the 9th edition came, I was overjoyed due to all of the new sculpts and bought a lot!

The magic the gathering deck that came out for necrons, got me thinking of how cool they were. Looked up some lore for them, thought it was some of the coolest I’ve read. Then I was hooked.
It was them or thousand sons and my friend saw the store had the command box. I took the necrons and terrain and he took the space marines and the rules. I thought the necrons were cool lookin, and the store had a discounted box of wraiths so I grabbed that too. I actually just got my first few thousand sons last week. Still want some space marines at some point too. Lotta cool shit in the franchise ngl

I loved the Necrons MTG deck and had been wanting into war gaming/mini painting for a bit, so they actually got me into the hobby as a whole

One of the cheapest ways to start an army, a versatile army from what I could tell, and a pretty cool set of unique rules
When I was with a buddy of mine we went to the local Games Workkshop store because he wanted to pick up something and I was along for the ride. The manager of the store ran a display game with me and it was fun but the prices were very steep for me at the time. Eventually after doing all the tutorials, painting On the free space marine, and talking about it a bit with my friends who were all getting into 40k I took my time and looked at all the armies on the shelf and the necrons seemed the best looking and easiest to paint. So I picked up a box of the necron warriors the ones before the 9th edition version came out. I Despised building them because it hurt my fingers to push the spines in place and balance the upper bodies on the legs.... but as ninth edition came around the corner and I delved deeper into the lore after building a whole other army. I just loved every bit when someone came up to me and told me how dumb this thing is in game or in the lore about the necrons I just thought wow I like the necrons that much more.
They seemed easy enough to paint for a beginner while also having a high skill ceiling so I could keep getting better. I also really like the vibe of undead horror from the ancient past but also robot
I was always more interested in the more 'technological' factions and wanted to start with admech but the starter boxes had necrons and they looked pretty cool so I split one with a friend and started to love them more and more after painting some and discovering the model lineup and lore, and reading the necron novels just sealed the deal for me
