Public transport is uncomfortable in Sardinia, don't rely on it. If you'll rent a car just use that. If you'll have to use buses, the easiest way to check the timetables is with the ARST app (might be only for Android, not sure)
I don't know much about the Olbia area. The best spots around there are the island of La Maddalena (through a quick ferry) and the whole archipelago of Costa Smeralda. To the south, the Island of Tavolara and the beaches in that area (like spiaggia delle vacche).
I'm sure there are many hidden gems closer to Olbia

Get an international drivers license. I just picked one up at triple A
You absolutely cannot miss local food, eat as much as you can, eat like a starving pig. It's that good!
