Fairly normal. This is on the lighter side. Often times most of the hoof horn is detached from the corium and needs to be removed.
I have no idea what I’m saying other than repeating what I’ve heard over hundreds of hood trimming videos lol
No. I’m saying this as someone with 35 horses outside my bedroom window. I have never seen anything like this before, let alone a hoof get trimmed that** low before. I can’t fathom how that many stones could ever have worked their way into a horses hoof like that and hve the hoof grow over them, encapsulating them like that. The only thing I can think of is neglect of a an animal who was left to live on a surface covered in stones like that. Not saying there isn’t another explanation, only that I can’t imagine one
This is more common in cows who are kept on concrete/gravel areas rather than grass. Even if the animals are kept maintained and trimmed, this can absolutely still happen between regular trims and isn’t necessarily a sign of outright neglect. My friend lives on a dairy farm and I know that this happens occasionally even though they had a ferrier regularly come around. Typically, it can be hard to detect this type of issue “early” so to speak because you may not notice anything until they begin to become lame.
You know what, I wouldn’t even know if the hooves are even similar to that of horses as much as I thought. From the bottom, they absolutely seem similar in the sense of what he’s scrapping off, but I can’t speak to the rest. I was in like a trance after watching this, I was, like, transfixed, and don’t really know that I was considering cow hooves vs horse hooves. It’s so dumb.
It seems the catch is the trade tools. Like I couldn't go at a hoof with my diagonal cutters. So maybe you get a set of farrier tools before the apocalypse. I believe you could do it!
Don't quote me on this but I think most wild hooved creatures never have issues like this because they grind off their hooves from all the freedom they have. As in the hoove doesn't get a chance to grow around the rock because the animal is constantly on the move and naturally wears off the growth of new tissue.
Yes, but not always, abscess, and other issues can still occur. Like most of nature, your allrights kinda right on the line of surviving, any inbalance can lead to doom.
So wild populations likely have a lower occurrence of hoof deformities because those individuals likely die of infection earlier in their reproductive years

this is a video explainer. but basically it boils down to a few things:
- hooves shed naturally but they do so by getting hydrated and drying out and hydrated and drying out repeatedly. domesticated cows are often kept in conditions where this doesn't happen. for example indoor cows not getting exposed to the same moisture and staying dry
- concrete is bad for hooves and feet of all kinds and that's just as true for cows as it is humans and many other species. concrete is really hard on hooves and can create issues inside the hoof which is where issues like this come from. concrete is obviously not an issue in the wild
- in the wild an animal stepping on a tooth may get it embedded in their hoof and become lame, but domesticated animals are also at risk for stepping onto things like nails and various sharp bits of metal
- hooved animals do still have issues in the wild, but less frequently. and when they do have them.... they're likely to die. this also means that any generic predisposition to hoof injuries doesn't survive in wild species the same way it does with domesticated ones
I’ve watched a lot of these videos so I’m pretty much a veterinarian.
He mentioned a white line defect. The outside of the hoof is known as the wall this is a much harder hoof material than the inside part which is called the sole. The two meet to form the white line. The two pieces of hoof can become separated due to a lot of things. Bad nutrition, an injury etc. once they start to separate, debris can enter the cavity which exacerbates the issue. Eventually the hoof can ‘win’ and encircle the debris into a cavity which gets entirely covered by hoof horn.
Before he started, the cow was probably lame and in a lot of discomfort, but from the outside the hoof would look totally normal. This video starts after he already cut into the hoof horn and found the cavity.
I think it's satisfying. It's disgusting in the same way that those videos where someone has a bad pimple popped or tonsil stones removed. But in the same breath you kind of get that empathic feeling of relief knowing that something painful has been removed in a cathartic way.
It’s satisfying to me knowing that poor girl won’t have to deal with painful feet anymore. I’ve dealt with horses and cattle most of my life and I’ve seen how much pain hoof problems can cause, and I know that getting those rocks out must’ve been a massive relief.
Can someone educate me on hoofs. Are they like human finger nails? Would these rocks be the human equivalent to having bamboo shoved under your nail bed?
They're like human fingernails, but the rocks likely aren't deep enough to be equivalent to under the nail bed. More like having a rock in your shoe, as the rocks may cause pressure when the animal is standing. They're basically super thick nails, but there's a fair amount of space between the rock and the nail bed so it probably wouldn't be super painful, but probably a bit uncomfortable.
I don’t understand how this could happen. Hooves grow downward but the rocks were up by his flesh buried down by the roots. How the fuck does that even occur?
Yes it can be quite painful. Imagine a giant, deep zit on your heel that you can barely put pressure on, thriving constantly. Then you have somebody pop it, clean it up and wrap it. It would be instantaneous relief.
Looks painful but goddamn I bet it felt like heaven to have that shit out of their foot. Watched one of these where the poor cow had some painful abscess and couldn’t even walk on that leg. It was so disgusting watching dude drain it, but the cow basically skipped out of there with her new hoof.
Ohh, the poor thang must've been suffering before the hoof trim 😭
I'm so glad that there's methods to clean out the rocks, but I hope that you can find a faster and more efficient way of doing it. Maybe get that poor animal some sort of animal shoe until then?
this is work done by a farrier, which is a type of blacksmith. Cow hooves need to be trimmed down regularly, it looks like this one got a hole in the hoof and a bunch of rocks and manure got stuck in it which can cause pain and infection, so he's cleaning out the hole and washing it with disinfectant and trimming away the excess around it
The poor animal must have been in agony. Well done to that skillfully farrier and thank you.
Is there a word for wanting to have something painful like this happen to you just so you can experience the pleasure of finding relief.
Probably in German.
Can confirm lol
What’s the word?? Don’t be stingy! Lol

Here's my up. This wins the internet's for the day.
Masochism?
Watch the new Hellraiser!
Submissive
Sadism! Perhaps?
For some reason I watch a stupid amount of hoof trimming videos
They only get recommended to me at 1am lol. Perfect time to watch a 45 minute trimming. Fuck you The Hoof GP! I need to go to bed!
Oh dude that guy is awesome
I love Hoof GP
Yeah, it’s 1:45am and I am passing out, but the vids are so satisfying
I feel seen lolol.
Me too man, but that’s ok
This is the only media that my mom and I are both avid watchers of lol. Almost no other tastes in common.
I didn’t know they existed but I imagine that I will too.
The hoof GP is the best guy to watch. He's so soothing with his Scottish accent.
These randomly started poppin up for me on YT shorts a few months back and I’ve been watchin them ever since.
Without the sound on I knew it was Nate and not Hoof GP.
Ha, me too. I had to click in here to make sure he was mentioned.
Is that considered a normal amount of trim? seemed excessive for my first time
Fairly normal. This is on the lighter side. Often times most of the hoof horn is detached from the corium and needs to be removed. I have no idea what I’m saying other than repeating what I’ve heard over hundreds of hood trimming videos lol

There’s something cathartic about it.
I want more, is there a sub
I hate that, having watched ~100 of these or so a year, I believe in an apocalypse scenario I could do this to my cattle.
It seems the catch is the trade tools. Like I couldn't go at a hoof with my diagonal cutters. So maybe you get a set of farrier tools before the apocalypse. I believe you could do it!
Links please
There is no reason for me to know so much about salicylic acid, white lines and digital dermatitis
Oh absolutely none whatsoever... the chances that I'll ever need to employ these techniques and knowledge are slim to nil... but not zero...
Hey how's the season going? Good but I just had to change my cow's tires
Left a nice size rock in there. Ugh
Nah bruh, bro had rocks in his shoes and couldnt do anything about it
What do hooved creatures do in the wild?

Boom. Over millions of years.
Or they are unable to evade predators as effectively as their peers.
Also they die a lot. So few animals make it in the wilderness.
Especially when they’re chased by ranchers in helicopters gunned down
Which is necessary for some animals
Like wild pigs
They die
They die, become prey

I would be afraid that I would go deep enough to hit the nerve
Sometimes they have to. I've seen them bleed..but the guy reassures that they heal over time...it'd be worse to let the infection go though.
Nate the Hoof Guy is the best! Love these videos

Is there a hoof cleaning sub? I'm enjoying these.
How did rocks get under the hoof in the first place?
I’ve watched a lot of these videos so I’m pretty much a veterinarian. He mentioned a white line defect. The outside of the hoof is known as the wall this is a much harder hoof material than the inside part which is called the sole. The two meet to form the white line. The two pieces of hoof can become separated due to a lot of things. Bad nutrition, an injury etc. once they start to separate, debris can enter the cavity which exacerbates the issue. Before he started, the cow was probably lame and in a lot of discomfort, but from the outside the hoof would look totally normal. This video starts after he already cut into the hoof horn and found the cavity.
Anyone know what kind of nerves hooves have? Like would any of this removal been painful? Or is the pain just from the pressure caused by those rocks?
No nerves in the hoof itself - it's made of keratin, like animal horns and human hair and fingernails
When does he find the pearls?
About halfways, but Brown Pearl doesn't roll off the tongue
Does that hurt them?
No. Its like trimming your nails
I watch one of these videos on YouTube by chance. Then my feed got flooded with these videos. Beware!
Nate the Hoof Guy on YouTube
Probably grazes on loose gravel. Poor thing. Imagine having all those rocks in your shoes
It would probably shock us all to find out how many hours of hoof trimming videos I’ve watched. So weirdly satisfying
Maybe I just don’t understand satisfying properly cause this wasn’t it
I think it's satisfying. It's disgusting in the same way that those videos where someone has a bad pimple popped or tonsil stones removed. But in the same breath you kind of get that empathic feeling of relief knowing that something painful has been removed in a cathartic way.

Closer to r/thisissogross
Damn. Thanks for helping the old gal.
You're a good man doing a great service
Ewwww and yay
Poor thing
Thank god for people that help animals !
Looks like a cursed Pomegranate
Do those cows live in a gravel pit? I thought they were just going to keep peeling back more and finding more rocks until there was no hoof left.
New drop on StockX
Is there a “quick” that could accidentally be hit within the hoof?
Not easily
I unmuted only to find it wasn’t the hoofgp damnittt
Some nice looking maracas
There's something satisfying about watching these videos. My go to is the Hoof GP. Anyone have any other channel recommendations?
Hoof GP is also my favorite, but I also watch Open Gate and Nate the Hoof Guy
This might be a preview of my upcoming root canal
Hows it so still?
It’s strapped down tight.
If you like this, you'll enjoy thehoofgp
Makes me want to schedule a mani/pedi.
Like watching a root canal.
What was that? Beans??
I don't know why but damn these hoof videos are so satisfying to watch!
[The Hoof GP](https://www.youtube.com/@TheHoofGP/) is better!
I didn’t know I was into rocks and hooves
Now do one for dirty toe nails.
Is that a camel toe?
"Best" ones are when its a nail or a tooth
This cow’s foot must rattle when he walks.
It's the same plot every time... Love it.

My brother has a hoof guy named Nate! Not kidding...

Thank you for the clarification. Poor horse must have been really uncomfortable with all those pebbles in their hoof.
Doesn't look like a horse hoof.
I stand corrected
I feel better just watching this
I don’t understand how this could happen. Hooves grow downward but the rocks were up by his flesh buried down by the roots. How the fuck does that even occur?
Are those rocks?
Why glue the rubber pad on when there is still shit on the surface?
Now come do my corns!

We all needed the blue spray 👀
I love Nate the Hoof Guy! He’s the hole I accidentally fell down and now follow like 8 hoof cleaning content people ll
Wow windex really works for everything
Nate the Hoof guy from YouTube by the sound of it
It just kept on getting grosser the deeper he dug
What exactly is he cutting away? Thats not hoof right? Or does hoof grow back?
Yeah, hooves are basically the same material as your finger nails and grow over time
It’s like a foot cavity 😳
Windex?
That guy rocks !!
I WANT MORE!!!!!!!!!
Nate the hoof guy! I’m subbed to his YouTube channel
How long would it typically take to get this bad?
I love when YouTube plays these videos!
Do rocks and pebbles in the hoof like that cause pain or possibly infections
Yes it can be quite painful. Imagine a giant, deep zit on your heel that you can barely put pressure on, thriving constantly. Then you have somebody pop it, clean it up and wrap it. It would be instantaneous relief.
Can the horse feel the rocks?
It’s not a pimple, but ok.
Wow this is interesting seriously
I can't believe I watch all of that. It's official I need to go to bed.
Agreed.
Nate The Hoof Guy represent!
Damn that looks like it hurts.
Man that looks disgusting and extremely painful.
I got a poop in my boot!
Looks painful but goddamn I bet it felt like heaven to have that shit out of their foot. Watched one of these where the poor cow had some painful abscess and couldn’t even walk on that leg. It was so disgusting watching dude drain it, but the cow basically skipped out of there with her new hoof.
Nate the Hoof Guy! I love his videos. He's so informative.
This finds me on every social media platform lol
holy crap it keeps getting worse. is that horse ever going to heal from that? Is it just going to take a long time for the hoof to grow back?
I really want to see the hooves washed and then worked on. I know it probably wouldn't do anything, but yeah.
I like watching these on TikTok while taking poops
Once every month or so I go on a Nate the Hoof Guy binge watch
[Nate the Hoof Guy on YouTube](https://youtube.com/@natethehoofguy?si=9maRGlGUJRtS1-ru)
This was so frustrating to watch and he fast forwarded the best part of a trim
Needs more blue on it.

How does he know he isn’t cutting the actual horse instead of the hoof?? He went so deep in so curious how close he was to hitting the horse.
Why glue a pad on the untrimmed hoof half? Won't this just shift the weight to the injured side more?
What's this "white line" he was talking about?
This is Nate the Hoof Guy on Youtube
This guy is doing God‘s work.
Imagine having a rock under your toe nail, that's basically what i imagine that would feel like
This is just a video of my grandpa cutting a block of parmesan
I love these videos but I have so many questions lol
I love not seeing the ending of videos
Those were some nasty rocks. Can someone please explain what I just watched?
