Threema has consistently maintained that they have no interest in implementing disappearing messages. Stating they want no part in security theater.

PLAYERUNKNOWNMiku01

And people like you eat that shit up. Imagine wanting less feature on a app you paid for. And how ironic that "they don't want to be part of security theater" when themselves is laughable on security side. Specially their recent forward secrecy which implemented half baked, can be only use on 1-to-1 chat, still not audited even they said it will last year, and their 2.0 desktop (that haven't released for years) don't have forward secrecy. Now tell me: still (don't want to be part of security theater), gentle sir?

aircooledJenkins

... I would like disappearing messages. Never said I didn't. Simply informed OP of Threema's stated response to this question.

TrueNightFox

This has been beaten to death but people seem to be missing the possible upside to such a feature… That ‘false sense of security’ excuse is tiring. absolute security can never be guaranteed and people that use Threema should already know this…security in a digital sense consist of a combination features working in tandem so disappearing messages helps enhance that (although, come to think of it it’s more of a privacy feature so people argument on security here is a moot point). Sometimes I wonder if Threema just doesn’t want to implement something that Signal messenger brought forth to the public, being petty in spite of it having value to some folks in a certain situation, perhaps needing to redact a message/photo, or sensitive info do to user error, or even being accused of false allegations could save anyone from embarrassment or even jail time. it’s difficult to understand the devs sometimes when they don’t explain in a more technical sense why they refuse to implement a feature people have been wanting for years. At this point forget about disappearing messages even if they wanted to implement it it’d probably add more complexity to their protocol and the last thing we need in additional developmental delays from research and testing. but maybe down the line in the far future they’ll really consider such a feature.

Cyberjin

they are just lazy and won't do the work for high demanding features and the "*false sense of security*" is an excuse for basic functions.

TrueNightFox

I don’t think Threema is lazy, maybe they’re letting the strive for near/perfection get in the way of implementing a good feature with a high probability of working as intended, or perhaps they need to hire or at least consult a AppSec engineer to help them implement disappearing messages to improve upon what Signal did to a Threema ‘standard’ - Although I don’t know why it isn’t considered ’secure’ by Threema when the Signal protocol has stood the test of time and endorsed by many respected cryptographers, maybe Threema feels the OS won't zero all the messages. either way, they're tied up with multi device support for the foreseeable future so disappearing messages is off the table for a good while.

PLAYERUNKNOWNMiku01

Lazy or incompetent that's what they are. Look on what Threema are look how Threema getting updates. It looks like Threema is a dead app. A app that still stuck at 2014 with their high ego misleading claim of "uhhh false of security, uwuuu security theater, nyaaaa gimmicky feature" meanwhile the Threema app itself are full of holes and half baked feature and security. I don't get how and why you people defend this app it's clear as day this app sucks and featureless and the security is laughable at best. And yeah the 2.0 desktop/multi devices that they been talking for the last 4 years! And let's make a bet? I'll give you "this no joke I'll give you 200$ if Threema mange to released that feature they been shitting about for years this year". You in? Not to mention the laziness and INCOMPETENT updates we got EVERY 3-2 MONTHS! When the last time you see Threema have a good features (not feature but features, huh?) When? "Ohh wait, yes, never!!!" Because that's how incompetent and lazy those people are. I said this before and will said it again. Threema's fate will be like Wire. Wire same Swiss messenger but with Wire at least that messenger have the current features. Anyway, Threema will face the same fate of that app and the INCOMPETENT and lazy devs will just focus on their Business app. Mind you Wire is free and Threema is not. I kinda wonder how fast that process gonna be.

TrueNightFox

Your comments are kinda funny sometimes (not in a bad way) I guess it's the way you call out the company, there's truth to what you mentioned, having said that... I get Threema is difficult to understand at times, I mean I thought the partnership with Afinum back 2020 was to allocate more resources to help speed up development but that is seemingly not working…I also know those quality of life incremental upgrades only go so far. I think Threema got themselves into development bind for 2-3 years on some serious miscalculations on protocol restructuring and multi device support and now they’re trying to catch up. They should’ve hired an experienced AppSec engineer to help architect this because the projects seem too big for the 3 founders at Threema. but what else is there besides Signal, or maybe Wire? the newer 'secure' IMs are very niche.

utaxiu

In my opinion disappearing messages are only a false sense of security. Nothing prevents the other side from taking a screenshot and therefore you can't really be sure that the message is gone forever.

ArnoCryptoNymous

And I like to add: People should think before send something, I mean, they are all old enough to use a highly encrypted device, so they should be able to think before acting, which makes disappearing messages nonsense. And even for business users disappearing messages makes absolutely no sense because they may need some send files or commitments or something.

Cyberjin

it's not all about security and privacy

PLAYERUNKNOWNMiku01

Another idiotic take coming from people who don't know what they talking about and have one sided mind. If a partner of your conversation is doing that and you know they doing it. Why you still talking to that person? Aren't ya the one who's dumb here? And on "false sense of security" people like you who eating that shit up. Give me one precise answer how and why that feature give a false of security when that feature isn't that all about, just give me one? Here's the problem you paid for that app (and me too 7 times actually) people like you deserved more specially when the Free apps out there have all the features we wanted and meanwhile this piece of shit app developed by the devs who has the biggest ego, most lazy, and incompetent devs I ever seen. And goes out of their way to gas light their users. Meanwhile they can't even close the security holes of their app because they been releasing half baked security feature

ArnoCryptoNymous

Is it so important for you to have disappearing messages?

Cyberjin

because it's the standard for every app out there lol I have made a lot of mistakes, grammer, wrong links, messaging the person wrong etc. having like edit or remove function would be nice

xenudone

You can use the other apps for that feature but have you noticed that is you talk in video or audio on Threema the battery consumption is less than any other app? This is, of course, because Threema doesn't care who you are, needs your phone stats and information so... Choose what's important for you...

Cyberjin

never had problems with battery consumption with any messaging app probably have to do with your type of hardware than anything lol did have problems with video files in threema [https://www.reddit.com/r/Threema/comments/13tz9c2/increase\_the\_size\_for\_upload\_please/](https://www.reddit.com/r/Threema/comments/13tz9c2/increase_the_size_for_upload_please/)

xenudone

Make a 5 min video call in any of the apps and after give a Threema video call and you will see that Threema uses the list battery - I don't have any hardware problems but I have noticed that this is better optimized or it's because they don't use tons of statistics bullshit on the users

Cyberjin

nothing noticeable on my end ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯ compared with Signal

ArnoCryptoNymous

Disappearing messages may standard for some Apps but not for all. Well if you mistakenly send something wrong … how about checking before sending it, or apologize for your mistake like all other do. Things happen. Accourding to: sending the wrong person, even if you send a message to the wrong person, don't you even think the other person see's your mistake? Even with messages are disappearing, but they all just disappear after people have seen and read them not if you like to have them disappear.

Cyberjin

first I'm dyslexic and people tend to make mistakes and heat of the moment even email comes with unsend function for a few sec because of this. You can delete and unsend the message if the sender hasn't seen it for most apps or wipe everything. it's **just better to have that function than not having it at all**, I don't understand the damage control from you. **it's more for convient, faster and cause less confusion** than for you to explain it or apologize. why don't you want a basic function?

zeusbfd

This is the 'only' reason i dont use threema with friends and family. just the odd work colleague. Disappearing Messages is an invalueble feature for me and others. I genuinely believe threema would have a wave of new members after implementing this.

Cyberjin

they are lazy and small indie company, so never
