Edcel Guzman has been making some incredible stuff. I want to pull the trigger on a shirt so bad, but I can't bring myself to spend $250-300 on a dang tshirt.
One day...
It's an attractive price considering the skill he has...Not sure I would be willing to pay that, but his work is pretty persuasive.
Edit: his work is pretty impressive, not it pretty impressive.
I'm pretty sure some big companies will copy his ideas and make a machine which will do this and sell them at the same/over price but market it more widely. Sadly, he will lose his business.
He can always Trademark his designs and since he made a video he has first world rights over the ones he does post. Doesn't stop counterfeiting or third world copies, but he'd be entitled to restitution in civil court.
You're not wrong, but what planet have you been on?
Amazon is full of knockoffs who blatantly infringe IP and the platform does diddly squat about it. There are many cases of internet-famous people who hold patents but get screwed over by dropshippers who are shielded by so many layers of bureaucracy they're untouchable.
You're right that theoretically he can file for a trademark, wait for it to get approved and then try to copyright strike copies or sue, but realistically speaking good luck getting a dropshipper or Chinese manufacturer to even show up to court, and even then the most that happens is they'll shut down shop and just open a new one because restitution is damn near impossible in these cases.
I was at the Tie-Dye Bowl at DFO last year this dude is talking about. The shirt with eyeball is probably $2k at least, I’ve seen some go for much higher on auction it’s insane
Absolutely. Anyone can buy some fancy brand with enough money.
This art is one of a kind. Even if he makes more, yours will still be just a liiiittle unique
Not a chance in hell I’m paying 300, much less 2,000 dollars for a rainbow shirt. I respect the artistic ability and time that may go into it. But no chance…
Knowing what goes into it absolutely, I'd put in the time to make it myself for >10$ for a white shirt and 10-20$ for dyes and like 5$ for a bag of rubber bands. But I understand buying this short before I buy Gucci lmao
I almost never have any kind of real world reaction to videos and I said "holy shit!" out loud when he opened up that shirt.
Maybe it's just my ignorance but that is so far beyond what I thought was even possible with tie-dyeing
Speaking as someone with some experience in this realm, no one shares tips or tricks. Not at his level anyway. People like this will share reveals but never step by step.
I mean it’s their bread and butter and revealing their process leaves them open for people to cut in on their revenue. If I could now get that shirt for $80 you bet I would over $240-$500. I’m sure you wouldn’t want people stealing your designs also.
Bro, you know how often I've torn my nice white slice of bread with cold butter and thought "There has to be a better way!" You are a Saint if I pull this off.
What the fuck no the trick is to perfectly drag the edge of the butterknife across the top to create a butter slice which then can be easily spread on bread
Or to not keep your butter in the fridge, if your climate won't make a puddle out of it. Butter keeps pretty fucking well on the countertop
You don’t think art improves our lives, or you don’t think what he does qualifies as art?
Edited to add question mark because someone pointed out that my question came off as a statement when I intended it as a question; also in case it’s not clear, my two option question is intended to frame my confusion not limit the person to literally only those two options: if there is another take not captured by my two options then I’m interested in hearing it
When did I say it didn’t count as art? Obviously it’s art but no, I don’t think art is “world improving”. I save a title like that for things like planes/cars/tech, you know, things that actually change how we live. If we start counting art as world improving then literally anything and everything could be viewed as that.
Ok so art doesn’t improve our lives? Then why do we make it, buy it, or consume it?
Or are you saying THIS art is just low grade art? Which, that’s fine, it’s not the Mona Lisa I guess, but it’s clearly improving people’s lives if only this one guys that made it, right?
I disagree that art doesn’t change our lives, that only tools of efficiency change our lives. That is clearly not correct, it’s like saying philosophy doesn’t change lives.
IDEAS have a greater impact on who we are as individuals and society than tools will ever have.
That's why artist and inventors should always write their memoires with all this information before they die.
Also, copyright and patents should last far far less.
I get where the mentally comes from, I just don't agree with it. I grew up in the worlds of model wargaming, writing, and blade smithing. All communities built on the understanding that there's more demand than there ever could be supply. In these spaces sharing your skills only helps to strengthen the community and encourage them to be just as giving with the new techniques they develop.
Hell, they could even take the route of most top level people making their money on lessons/classes like the gardening community. At least then the info still gets out instead of dying with the craftsman.
I hear what you’re saying. I think the things you mentioned though have a much higher demand, skill set, or more hobby oriented than tie dye shirts being sold for income so what little upper hand they do have is to be protected. There’s a reason it won the competition because the design is next level and he would be under cut immediately after posting the how-to video. I think he deserves to milk any profits until someone else figures it out.
I also think that someone already skilled in tie dye can possibly figure it out by studying it wrapped up so while there is an air of protecting the design I’m sure some tie dyers are already going through trial and error to copy it.
Maybe you're right and the demand isn't there. That's a risk for sure, but I feel like this post's response should assuage most of that concern. I'd argue that tie-dye fits perfectly into that same niche of profitable hobby to acceptable career as mini painting and bladesmithing. Especially with the boom of people like this, namely on TikTok, reinvigorating the coolness of tie-dye.
Not only that, but as someone else mentioned there is a significant amount of trained skill involved in achieving these sorts of results reliably in most crafts. I'd assume it's the same here. Sharing your process doesn't mean everyone will be able to copy your exact design. Some might, sure. Most people with that level of skill are more interested in adapting your process for their own creative endeavors though. To speak in Monty Python references, Brian didn't get near the following Jesus did.
Meh, not really. It’s their career and it’s competitive. Why reveal your special trick so everyone else can replicate it and take money out of your pocket using your own technique.
This isn't entirely true, tips and tricks are not going to suddenly give you the skills to execute something like this.
There's not some "secret" you can know *how* to do something and it can still take you 10 years to actually perfect it.
But if someone was inclined enough, they could see what knots he made in the first half of the video by studying it frame-by-frame. He even tells you which knots do what. Then it’s just a matter of matching what he did and practicing and practicing until you get a similar result.

It’s not that I had to let them sit that long, they just did. Lol I had some pieces tied before I moved states, forgot about them, and found them later on unpacking. Turned out just as well as my freshies!
If I understood him right, he said he tied it up a year ago but didn't have the time to dye it before he had to go to that competition, so it only sat tied for a year with no dye in it yet
I don't think that was in question. It just seems wrong that a shirt can be tied up in such a crazy shape for such a long time and still retain its shape.
Edit: seems I've forgotten that irons exist
Provided it's 100% cotton (should be, for tie-dye), and was tied up while dry without stretching the fabric, it should be fine for ages. He definitely does iron it after the wash out, as well. Cotton fibers are resilient.
Watch the video again he tied it up a year ago but only just dyed it. He's says "I finally dyed it yesterday" at the 22 second mark, there are subtitles too if you had your sound off.
Its a 75 second long video ffs reddit, at least 221 people had this same thought god help us all.
Why is everyone responding like this? They’re asking how the shirt can maintain its shape after **being tied up for a year**
and then everyone (including you) are like, “watch the video, it was tied up a year ago”
Like… that’s exactly what they’re saying??
Reread the comment again. They asked how it can stay the same “after being *tied up* for a year”, not after being dyed or whatever. It’s a 17 word comment, ffs reddit.
The first step to getting good at something is being bad at it.
I observed Escher, I love Basquiat
I watched Keith Haring, you see I study art

~ Macklemore, 10 thousand hours.
That’s clearly top talent right there. It’s a shame that tie dye clothes on this level just look so ugly despite being extremely impressive at the same time.
These all look amazing. It's a pity you can't wear one without people thinking you're a massive stoner who's about to tell everyone how mushrooms cure cancer.
To be clear. I wouldn't mind wearing it. I just know that people would make assumptions about me which would affect how they perceive and treat me. Doesn't matter how little I care if I still get treated worse by people.
In what situation would you a) wear a tye dye shirt and b) have massive consequences for how people treat you.
You're not wearing this to a loan application or a funeral. You're wearing it to the park while you walk your dog.
I was gonna say, I don't run around telling people they cure cancer BUT I will wax poetic to anyone who will listen about how they are the best anti-depressant not on the market.
Word to the wise, don’t start doing psychedelics without having decent knowledge of you and your families mental health history. You can really ruin yourself.
Psilocybin is amazing for depression. I recommend trying, just cautiously; safe preparation can be the difference between a life-changing, soul-healing experience and a horrific nightmare come alive.
Forreal dude. I suffered with mad depression and I still do, but they really helped and changed me as a person for the better. I might be a bit slower now, but that was only because I abused them (which is pretty hard to do), and I still think that’s for the better.
If you’re ever able to try them, I recommend listening to the Tao Te Ching or something with Allen Watts. If you just want them to laugh yourself nearly to death, watch The Eric Andre show.
I'm not a doctor and I may be wrong but I had read/seen something about how taking mushrooms creates new neural pathways in the brain and can help decrease depression. It's super interesting:
https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/news/newsroom/news-releases/psilocybin-treatment-for-major-depression-effective-for-up-to-a-year-for-most-patients-study-shows
I wear my old lady boomer suit while I’m stoned to go pick up mushrooms at the illegal store. Because I’m an old lady boomer who loves weed and needs psilocibin for depression.
Yo this is some crazy thought process and this is going to send you to an early grave if you allow this kind of analysis to inform your decisions and behavior. (Hopefully you aren’t saying this because you judge people this abrbitraily yourself).
The scenario you describe is NOT how reality works, very few people notice what others do AT ALL, let alone engage in these kinds of prejudgements, and honestly, even if that was how people actually operated, it STILL would be entirely useless and exhausting to try and preempt it. You have to LIVE and let the chips fall. A
The whole time he was talking I was shittily prejudging the reveal solely based on the faded shirt he’s wearing. Literally went from 🤔to🫨. This isn’t even cringe. I know nothing about tie dye and I think this is some next level shit.
I'm not denying that his work is worth that amount literally all I'm saying is I go to a shop that sells shirts like this between 45$ - 100$.
Edit: So sorry I thought you were a response to my "we go to different hippy shops" comment and they were taking it personally.

From OP
Why are half the comments confused about the sub. I thought at this point everyone knew that the "cringe" is no longer relevant for this sub. This is one of the most popular subs so people should be able to figure that out in a day or two just from the type of content that is posted here.
This is one of the cool things about tiktok video created. Ppl who have hobbies and post it on tiktok and because they make money or attention from it. Got super amazing at doing one thing. I remember watching someone make real stuff from cake and when they started they were okay at it and got amazing after a while.
I've never given the slightest shit about tie-dye, I chuckled when he said something about a tie dye contest, but holy fuck that looks incredible and what a fucking skill! I can't begin to comprehend how you plan something like that out.
My mistake. I was not aware. Seems like a name change for the sub would make sense, but that's just my personal attention. Normally, this sub only pops up on my feed with truly cringe stuff, so I was genuinely confused.

My jaw literally dropped that is an incredible tie dyed shirt
I wasn't even aware that this could be done

If I ever make it big I know I'm gonna be drippy af at least
for real! If the lottery man ever comes my way I'm just gonna hire Guzman on retainer.

Way cheaper to hire people in another country to place rubber bands just so.
I was at the Tie-Dye Bowl at DFO last year this dude is talking about. The shirt with eyeball is probably $2k at least, I’ve seen some go for much higher on auction it’s insane
No it’s wearable art. If I had that kind of money for clothes I would wear something like that before Prada or any of those names.
Absolutely. Anyone can buy some fancy brand with enough money. This art is one of a kind. Even if he makes more, yours will still be just a liiiittle unique

so this is legit. I dont even know what to say I'm awe struck. I want to aggressively compliment him.
I'd feel bad wearing one of these. Like wearing the Mona Lisa or something.
Not trying to hate or anything, but wouldn't it be better to just somehow improve the process of manufacturing the shirts so theyre not so expensive?
I always thought ones like that were fake prited things, this is really impressive.
I almost never have any kind of real world reaction to videos and I said "holy shit!" out loud when he opened up that shirt. Maybe it's just my ignorance but that is so far beyond what I thought was even possible with tie-dyeing
I don’t understand what’s cringe about it
tiktokcringe isn't actually about cringe anymore... Still throws me off though

Looks like an Alex Gray tool album cover. I'd buy this shirt.

Same!! That some raw talent right there. Wonder how long it to to figure out how to do this. So interesting.
Sadly I'm not an XXXXL size shirt, otherwise I would have made an offer for it.
Too late its my blanket.
Same omg
I wonder how he knows were to make the knots for the pattern, seems difficult to figure out
Lots and lots of practice, trading tips and tricks with others etc, I'm sure.

There's a lot of world improving knowledge lying under gravestones.
IF YOU USE A SPOON TO BUTTER YOUR BREAD, IT WILL NOT TEAR LET IT BE KNOWN, CARRY THIS TALE INTO THE WIND AND SING IT FROM THE HILLS
you can also just toss the butter in the microwave for like 8 seconds. softens it up without threatening its structural integrity or making a mess.
You idiot, you’ve just lost out on meager profits!
But if you put peanut butter in the microwave to soften it, make sure there are no bits of foil left on the lip of the jar.
Or just leave it on the counter.
Just leave the butter on the kitchen bench, it's never hard...
Bro, you know how often I've torn my nice white slice of bread with cold butter and thought "There has to be a better way!" You are a Saint if I pull this off.
Just melt the butter in the microwave and spoon it onto the bread and spread it around.
I just warm my spoon up in the microwave
Why y'alls butter so cold???
People keep it in the fridge. As if butter isn’t pretty damn shelf stable
You can also find grate it over the bread.
What the fuck no the trick is to perfectly drag the edge of the butterknife across the top to create a butter slice which then can be easily spread on bread Or to not keep your butter in the fridge, if your climate won't make a puddle out of it. Butter keeps pretty fucking well on the countertop
Butter’s pretty shelf stable lol
Or have a butter dish.

How do they not get blown out and unwearable after being tied up for a year?
Depends. I would assume he didn’t soak in SA before tying. I’ve had some shirts tied up for 6-8 months before dying and they’re usually fine!
Why do you have to let them sit tied for so long?
It’s not that I had to let them sit that long, they just did. Lol I had some pieces tied before I moved states, forgot about them, and found them later on unpacking. Turned out just as well as my freshies!

I wish I were just half as talented as that guy.
I've made a few tie-dye shirts. They look like hot garbage compared to this.

Practice half as much as he does and you likely will be.
Start trying then lol
If thats what you really wish just practice for the next 5 years. I'm sure he had to do the same.
Competitive tie dyeing is something I didn’t know I wanna see
My thought exactly. Something I like about countries like the US is how they have so many random ass competitions that don’t exist where im from
That’s clearly top talent right there. It’s a shame that tie dye clothes on this level just look so ugly despite being extremely impressive at the same time.
Shut the front door. Wtf. Madness. Howwwwww
I don’t like tie dye, I think it’s goofy. However, this one is rad! Love the colors and the eye.
These all look amazing. It's a pity you can't wear one without people thinking you're a massive stoner who's about to tell everyone how mushrooms cure cancer.
You're telling me this shirt will act as a filter so I can avoid talking to anyone who harbors ridiculous stereotypes about tie dye shirts?!
I think they're telling us that if you wear these shirts then people will offer to sell you fun drugs!
Or you could just wear it in public and not care like a normal person lol
To be clear. I wouldn't mind wearing it. I just know that people would make assumptions about me which would affect how they perceive and treat me. Doesn't matter how little I care if I still get treated worse by people.

It's super interesting: https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/news/newsroom/news-releases/psilocybin-treatment-for-major-depression-effective-for-up-to-a-year-for-most-patients-study-shows
It’s legal in Oregon as a guided depression treatment.

Yep, saved my life !
My first thought, lol! ![gif](giphy|pJmnk86fXFNmrUb8LB|downsized)
I live near Eugene so it'd be the official outfit of pretty much every occasion.
I was gonna say (respectfully) that the "tye dye cup" would be in Portland
I try not to judge people but if I see someone in a tie dye shirt I instantly assume they’re cooler then the average non-tie dye person
The whole time he was talking I was shittily prejudging the reveal solely based on the faded shirt he’s wearing. Literally went from 🤔to🫨. This isn’t even cringe. I know nothing about tie dye and I think this is some next level shit.
I think the shirt he’s wearing is fucking sick.
> This isn’t even cringe. nobody said it was cringe
Now that's what I call a 60$ tie diy shirt!! You should sell to hippy shops.
Shirts like this usually go for $200+
We go to different quality hippy shops
His shirts range from $500-2k looking at his Instagram auctions
I'm not denying that his work is worth that amount literally all I'm saying is I go to a shop that sells shirts like this between 45$ - 100$. Edit: So sorry I thought you were a response to my "we go to different hippy shops" comment and they were taking it personally.
ofc the tie die cup was in portland LOL
Love the work Bro. Keep it up‼️‼️🔥
The amount of people in this thread who don't read is amazing.
The number of people who don’t know the difference between number and amount is appalling.
Ofc the tie dye cup is in portland lmao
Not cringe
r/toolband just collectively orgasmed.

Tie dye is one of the ugliest shit I know of but this is pretty damn impressive, I can’t lie.
What makes this cringe? I’m not following. That shirt is dope
Name of the creator?
> For the people asking https://dyeinglightcreations.com/ is his website but he doesn't sell these intricate designs there. >@dyeinglightcreations is his Instagram From OP
He’s dyeinglightcreations on Insta.
I fucked up drawing a stick figure! How the hell do you do this!!!
I’m super happy also! Wickedly cool!
THAT'S THE AWESOME-EST TYE-DYE SHIRT, I'VE EVER SEEN!!! 😍😍😍
Wtf. That’s awesome
That is fantastic! I just get blobs of color.
How the fuck do you do that?
I want the shirt he’s wearing! I’m not into the crazy designs but what he’s rocking is sick
Why are half the comments confused about the sub. I thought at this point everyone knew that the "cringe" is no longer relevant for this sub. This is one of the most popular subs so people should be able to figure that out in a day or two just from the type of content that is posted here.
That’s almost tool album worthy
Not to take away from how cool this shirt is…but of course Portland has a Tie-Dye Cup.
Eyeball Mandala? I want a Nelson Mandala. Ha Ha! Ha Ha! HaHa!
Amazing!!!
This is one of the cool things about tiktok video created. Ppl who have hobbies and post it on tiktok and because they make money or attention from it. Got super amazing at doing one thing. I remember watching someone make real stuff from cake and when they started they were okay at it and got amazing after a while.
How the hell did he do that
Wow!
Good lord
Outstanding. I want one. I want sheets made out of that! Gorgeous!
NO FCKING WAY!
r/nextfuckinglevel
can... can i buy that?
Tie dye eye 👀
How the fuck…
I don’t see how this is cringe? This is just a guy showing off a piece of artwork he’s proud of.
Wow I hate tie dye stuff I usually see but that is a beautiful shirt!
A said DAMN! Out loud (I'm in a very important business meeting discussing my conduct around female employees)
r/nextfuckinglevel
Holy shit that’s insane 🤯
I've never given the slightest shit about tie-dye, I chuckled when he said something about a tie dye contest, but holy fuck that looks incredible and what a fucking skill! I can't begin to comprehend how you plan something like that out.
Been following this dude for a while, blows me away https://instagram.com/dyes_n_goodvibes
He should’ve really did that on a non fat people sized shirt
*goes out and buys a tie dye shirt*
This should be in r/nextfuckinglevel, not sure why it’s “cringe”. It’s amazing!
Why is this on a cringe sub? That's really talented.
Read flair and pinned comment
My mistake. I was not aware. Seems like a name change for the sub would make sense, but that's just my personal attention. Normally, this sub only pops up on my feed with truly cringe stuff, so I was genuinely confused.
Holy fucking shit. Someone help me. Why is cringe. I don't see the cringe?
Dude literally deserves the trophy. This isn’t even cringe lol I’m glad it was shared though.
TOOL af
This is dope on so many levels 😎
It's cool, but when he went into the terminology about it's design it reminded me of vape bros, lol
Don’t know how this is cringe it’s a awesome tie-dye shirt
