Going back to school, I found the new grad recruitment process to be pretty unforgiving for large tech/business. For example, if you start work in August 2025 after graduating in May 2025 then you likely had to be applying/interviewing/doing intense recruitment engagement from July 2024 and getting a new grad offer by Fall 2024. But I found most people were networking at least 6-12 months before that and needed to have at least a couple internships to be a competitive candidate. So if you missed that new grad recruitment period then you are excluded from that hiring channel after graduation but you don’t have enough experience/skills to be hired for a more senior role, for example. So some people just get stuck but had only started their job search at the beginning of their last term (because they thought “start looking for a job Jan 2025 to start working summer 2025”). I did find a few people this year say they had success getting a job/internship via UBC job fairs like from Translink/BC Hydro. *Anecdotal perspective; small sample size of ~dozen large companies.

To be clear, the "new grad" designation typically lasts 1 year after graduation.

Has this ever not been the case

but many people here say they found a job even before graduation...or is this self selection bias?

Practical-Ninja-1510

self selection bias probably

Practical-Ninja-1510

It's always been like that according to my siblings who graduated before me.

what about the boomer years?

I’d imagine it was easier, but then again a lot of hiring practises back then weren’t exactly equitable.
