It is, I've done it, but for most people it will be a hustle.

dylanwouldacaughtit

100%. I’ve only had issues making it when the distance is ~1k.

sitting_duc

I agree. It took me approx 16 minutes to walk 1km at ubc to class

_procommentreader

16??

sitting_duc

Yeah around that, is that slow? Edit - probably more like 13 minutes at the 1 kilometre mark and an additional 3 to get up the stairs into class?

_procommentreader

ok fair, im transferring in september and worried getting around is gonna be like going through a maze if it takes 15+ mins 😭

inquisitivequeer

I’ll warn you that it definitely feels like going through a maze for the first few weeks. You’ll get the hang of it though!

reclaimyaself

For real. Had to google maps my way through 6 diff classrooms for my first week. Should be good afterwards though as long as you don’t skip class hahahaha

quivverquivver

[~5kmph is normal.](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Preferred_walking_speed) So 4kmph is slower than average, but probably would look pretty normal if you saw it on the street. If "commute" speed is very important, biking or skateboarding are also options.

satinsateensaltine

You develop what I call the UBC Walk. I now speed around like a little motorboat.

WhyNotIfNotWhen

I'm a human F1 car atp

bingBong1923

Same, sometimes I have to remind myself that I don't have to rush and can enjoy the walk

hniyuo

Your calves will thank you by the end of the year

Exact-Cockroach8528

I'd also be thanking my calves for not failing me

604nini

Very doable, might have to hustle though

zeromadcowz

It shouldn’t be a problem for someone 18-20 with average walking ability, just motor on. I did ICICS to Arts in 9 mins consistently (around 1 km)

Exact-Cockroach8528

Stride length 🤓☝️

DroppedLoSeR

Dempster to Buchanan D was my walk one semester... Who needs to go out of their way for cardio, just be a CS student who hasn't fulfilled their elective requirements.

Maplesyrop-Bob

Honestly just sacrifice either the last 5-7 mins of the first class or the first 5-7 mins of the second class and enjoy your walk between the two.

Exact-Cockroach8528

Yeah I'll probably sacrifice 5-7 mins of the first class tbh

CaffieneJunkie10

Why not about 2-3 minutes from each?

hicalouse

I’ve done it from LIFE to Forestry (1km ish). Never left my first class early so I’m usually 1-2 minutes late to my next class, sometimes on time if I’m lucky.

Exact-Cockroach8528

I'm just accepting that I'll be late to my next class atp

hicalouse

I was lucky that both those classes had live recordings, so if I didn’t feel like rushing I could find somewhere nearby to watch it. But tbh didn’t miss much since the prof yapped a bit before starting. Just gotta wait till first week and see how ur prof does things.

the-daffodil

i had an 800m walk one semester and it was the worst thing ever! i usually would pack my stuff for my first class a little early, zoom out asap and then just barely make it in time for my next class. it’s possible but it’s tiring! alternatively, you can leave the first class a bit early and walk a bit slower!

Uranium_Juice235

I had an 800m walk (like one of the earlier posters) during my first year. It's doable during the 10 minute break, but I had to speedwalk/jog. The worst thing was that there was no time to empty my bladder 😅 So....700m should be okay...

Randromeda2172

It's totally doable. I used to do Buchanan to CIRS back to back

vilianxy

never skip leg day

Exact-Cockroach8528

Been skipping leg days since the start of my life 😭

vilianxy

better start now for that 700m

Exact-Cockroach8528

brb getting a gym membership 😦

obukhoyog

I've made it to classes on time after a 500m walk, so 700m should be manageable with a quick pace!

Pug_Grandma

Get one of those foldable kick scooters.

Exact-Cockroach8528

The word "scooter" itself gives me shin pain.

thiccwhale666

You’ll be fine. I discovered you can walk from Orchard Commons to Buchanan in 11 minutes if you believe in yourself.

Exact-Cockroach8528

I need to go from Robert Osborne 1 to ORCH

thiccwhale666

You’re chilling.

MeltedChocolate24

Invest in a $30 skateboard

OkMode2981

Don’t forget and umbrella

Exact-Cockroach8528

👌🫡

Top_Wasabi_8671

I had to get from Buchanan D to Swing Space building which is about 950m and I have done it just around 10 mins (but I had to be quick)

saltplustime

Consider what the classes are. From experience you would not want to run to a Chem Lab as you need to suit up and in class quizes are time limited and start exactly at the start of class.

Ok-Investigator-3768

I did hebb to dmp in term 1 through main mall which is about 900m, was able to make it pretty much exactly on time fast walking. 6'1 tho so your milage may vary

barkingcat

you can try a skateboard or a bike.

Not_So_Deleted

Yes, but it may be a bit rough without a bike or scooter... You could have it worse, such as ANSO to Osborne (I never had it, but this is a more egregious example).

jus1982

[https://maps.app.goo.gl/E8uKyfn5KC1haLPJ7](https://maps.app.goo.gl/E8uKyfn5KC1haLPJ7) Google says 9 mins, I definitely do Orchard to Thunderbird Parkade in less than that. Just can't dawdle.

syg102

get a skateboard you'll save so much time and you can use it for commuting everywhere

Rare-Possible1142

Skateboard. Best transportation on campus.

floralsiren

I had orchard commons to Buchanan one semester, which is 1k. Took me about 14 mins usually, with the Buchanan stairs. I just left my orch class a few mins early. Told my profs at the start of the semester what my situation was, and they didn't care

CaffieneJunkie10

We've all done it before, you just gotta sprint. 700 m really isn't that bad.

jessmacdd

rent an evo xx

thefirstbishop

Thunderbird to Museum of Anthropology doable in less than 10min, just get rollerblades

Exact-Cockroach8528

Okay but how long does it take to strap on rollerblades and then take them off later?

thefirstbishop

A guy I went to Mech Eng with just wore them all through class. Actually, he seemed to wear those blades to every class through all 5 years of Engineering, lol
