There's a couple options when it comes to dryad type stuff, just to note this sub is for fantasy / the old world which is a rank and flank game where you line your lads and lasses in square formations, as opposed to Age of Sigmar which is more free form (but similarly is a fantasy game as opposed to sci-fi). The main dryad style range games workshop makes right now is the Sylvaneth (listed under Age of Sigmar on their web store), which is lots of trees and tree magic, tree spirits etc. You can play them lot as either Wood Elves in the Old World game, or as Sylvaneth in Age of Sigmar.

Most_Repair_2553

Favourite wood elf lore, is that Great Stags (just a big magic deer they ride sometimes), really really hate snakes above all.

CocoTheMailboxKing

Are they scared of snakes or just dislike them? I love Great Stag lol

Most_Repair_2553

just dont like 'em, certainly dont flee from them

Busy-Support-9399

Ah thank u! How cool, and love that little piece of lore that’s so wholesome. Excited to dive in!

RED3_Standing_By

It is 100% possible to make an all* tree-spirit army in the Old World. You can easily use the same models as you would for Age of Sigmar. You have treeman ancients as HQ, dryads as troops, tree kin in special, and regular treemen in rare. It wouldn’t even be a weak list. I don’t know the exact army composition of Sylvaneth in AoS, but their original model line came from the Wood Elf army in the old Warhammer Fantasy Battles, so I’m sure they’ll work. *you would technically also need to field one small unit of 10 wood elf archers, but everything else can be trees.

A thing that hasn't been mentioned here but I think is important to be aware of. Warhammer (and other wargames) is at least four hobbies all wrapped up into one, and most people enjoy each of them to differing degrees. These hobbies are assembling models, painting models, playing the game, and the lore. Within them there's also a range of expression, and while TOW is the predominant force as it just came out, there's several older editions of Fantasy that can be played if you can find opponents and are equally valid. With this in mind, my advice would be to think about which parts appeal to you, and work out if there's any that don't. If you don't like the game, just collecting an army that brings you joy is completely fine. If you love the game but find the painting is tedious, finding other ways to play (Paperhammer, VTTs, commissioning people to paint armies) is also completely fine. If you have no idea what will sound good, find a box you like the look of, read some lore on the wiki, and see if you can find someone to let you play a trial game to get the basics down, and see how much you enjoyed each. I'm not much of a modelling/painting guy myself, so I can't give advice on that front, but regarding the game, the most important thing is to work out what your local community looks like. How many people there are, where they meet, and what they play (most likely TOW, but also important to know how big the typical game is). If there isn't much of a local community, or you don't gel with them, that isn't the end of the world! There's several ways to play online (Tabletop Simulator and Warhall being the biggest), so then it becomes a matter of finding an online community that fits your needs. If that's a route you want to explore, the Warhammer Fantasy Discord linked in the sidebar of this subreddit is pretty welcoming and last I checked has a decently active community of TOW players. It's where I met the friends that I play all of my games with these days. I hope any of this helps!

Busy-Support-9399

Thank u this is super helpful 🙏🏻 tbh it all sounds up my alley so I’m feeling excited to have found this community!

PuddingEarlVW

You're very welcome! While I would encourage you to play TOW if you're looking for an easy time getting an in with the community, if you're open to playing 6th edition and don't mind playing online I'm always open to showing people the ropes.

Breegalad

Heyo and welcome! if you love fae and tree spirits then I got some good news, both fantasy settings (Old World and Age of Sigmar) have a force for you! In the Old World you have the Wood Elf Realms, elves who live in magical forests, the main one known as Athel Loren, who practice nature magic and chill with dryads and other tree spirits will protecting the woods. They have horse, deer, and giant hawk cavalry and a *lot* of bows, and while most their models aren't currently available from Warhammer they will be returning soon enforce! In the Age of Sigmar the Wood Elves had to retreat from chaos leaving the forest spirits to fend for themselves, who Allarielle lead to rebirth as the faction called Sylvaneth. They consist of dryads, treemen, elf spirits, and warrior trees, who fight alongside the forest spirits known as Sprites (often buglike in appearance) and they've been fighting for the forces of order since near the beginning of the game so feature frequently in the lore, especially in their home domain the Realm of Life Ghyran, where they are pushing back against the forces of Nurgle, the Chaos God of Death and Despair. The Old World is very classic fantasy, with a lot of the focus being on fantasy not-europe, and has decades of lore along with a new game system and lore being released and worked on currently. Meanwhile Age of Sigmar is high as a kite fantasy, with inspiration drawn from Norse' Realms and DnD's planescape, where life happens in the Realms of magic. This also has a new Edition coming out soon and some exciting new lore about to erupt out of the sewers (Ratmen planeshifted part of their city into the Realm of fire) All in all an exciting time whatever takes your fancy, extra happy to have another fae enjoyer!

Busy-Support-9399

Thank you for sharing this! Absolutely loving the lore of it all. Actually can’t believe it took me so long to find WH but glad to hear there’s plenty of fae and nature magic enjoyers here 🌱💕

Dragonliz321

Depending on where you are find your local game store and connecting with the community there is always a great start! Does the store you stumbled upon have paint nights and a play space?

Busy-Support-9399

Oh good idea I will have to look into it and see if they do!

B15H4M0N

Welcome! Lore content comes in a variety of ways, with subtle (or major) changes between editions over the years. Usual first recommendation are older army books like [https://www.scribd.com/document/401835035/Warhammer-Fantasy-Wood-Elves-6th-pdf](https://www.scribd.com/document/401835035/Warhammer-Fantasy-Wood-Elves-6th-pdf) For some quicker and easier options (though not as full fledged), there are [https://whfb.lexicanum.com/wiki/Main\_Page](https://whfb.lexicanum.com/wiki/Main_Page) [https://warhammerfantasy.fandom.com/wiki/Warhammer\_Wiki](https://warhammerfantasy.fandom.com/wiki/Warhammer_Wiki) [http://2d4chan.org/wiki/Warhammer\_Fantasy\_Battle](http://2d4chan.org/wiki/Warhammer_Fantasy_Battle) etc The Book of Choyer on YT has a Fantasy playlist [https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLxbR0SRy9VpBWgkbLqmRGysJxvZLoEft3&si=rYm0vqVME7tjUING](https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLxbR0SRy9VpBWgkbLqmRGysJxvZLoEft3&si=rYm0vqVME7tjUING) (though a lot of it is in the context of the video game, gives a general vibe nevertheless). Not sure about podcasts.

Busy-Support-9399

This is amazing thank you!!

Hnodoyuna

Warhammer. I came for the minis, stayed for the Lore, suffer the rules. Enjoy what you can from the hobby and dont try to Chase the "latest and and only oficial" rule set. Most of us dont even play the Game. This video explains what im triying to say. https://youtu.be/XogVrWgOZ2o?si=c9r8ueSHaC5hEOHj Also theres a lote of other games and brands of miniatures that you can buy, most of them way cheaper. A Game should not feel as homework. In this hobby we all in the spectrum ( dont you hate me, you all know what i mean and that It is true) and the community or individuals can be kinda harsh. A lote of them Will be blinded by the idea of "oficial" or "actualized". You can use whathever miniatures you want Whit the rule set of your choice. I would recommend to play some cheap and easy frostgrave with the minis of your choice before anything else. Big Hug to you. Cheers.

Busy-Support-9399

That’s so reassuring thank you!! Even if I just end up with a bookshelf of miniatures and a new lore to discover and monologue to my sorry friends, I will be happy. Glad to know y’all are also mostly here for the vibes 😂🫶🏻

AoifeElf

Hello! Fellow Warhammer girl here. Welcome to to the greatest fantasy setting ever made. Just ehm... ignore the end times. Yeah. Storm of Chaos is your canon... Also if you like video games, the Vermintide games and Warhammer Total War games are a great way to get a good feeling on what your dealing with before you delve heavy into the lore. And MY GOSH is the lore so good!

Busy-Support-9399

Hello! Yay I’m loving seeing all the ladies in this space! Thank you! and im not biggest gamer but ive definitely found a few I’ve absolutely loved so there’s no reason not to explore it! ☺️

Lilapop

>ignore the end times >Vermintide games Pick one. (I kid, ratgaem is a fun time, and the end times influences/references are relatively benign.)

AoifeElf

lol, oh yeah.

GreyManinJapan

I have nothing to add except to say... ...'welcome to the hobby! It's a good one and I hope it brings you hundreds of hours of enjoyment, regardless of which (or all!) of the avenues you want to explore.' :-)

Busy-Support-9399

Thank you! So glad to be here 🙏🏻 :)

justthankyous

I strongly recommend the YouTube series/podcast Lorebeards, especially starting 8 months or so ago when former Warhammer writer Andy Law became cohost. Each Sunday Law and Warhammer Fantasy Uber nerd Loremaster of Sotek do a very deep dive into a Warhammer Fantasy lore topic, covering both the lore and touching on behind the scenes stuff. Putting it on in the background while you go about your day is an excellent way to absorb lots of lore.

Busy-Support-9399

Thanks for the rec I will def give it a listen!! 🙏🏻

Luy22

Gotrek and Felix, The Blackhearts, Riders of the Dead and Brunner are my all time favorite books and series. Gotrek and Felix series spans most of the Old World and I'd rec that to any newbie.

MeLoMax_Media

Honestly I don’t have a group in my local shop and I’m returning after 25 years. I’m just into collecting to paint and got my wife into that aspect now too. If you find a group to play, awesome!!!! If not and you like just collecting the models you like to paint up and enjoy that aspect, awesome!!! The best part about Warhammer is there’s no wrong way to engage. Play, paint, read, whatever from the hobby that makes you happy is the way to go! I love Greenskins. I have a lot of the old army books and there’s a greenskin box coming out this week I have on PO with a buttload of paints and brushes brand new and waiting to paint my brains out. That’s what I love. You do you. Welcome and congratulations on finding an amazing world in Warhammer!!!!

Busy-Support-9399

Thank you! I love to hear you and your wife enjoy the hobby together, im hoping to rope my partner into it too but he’s a bigger nerd than me so shouldn’t be too hard! Painting night in sounds like the best date!

MeLoMax_Media

No problem!! It’s great to be able to share something I have loved since it began in the 80s with my wife. I’m positive if you guys pull through, sitting together at a table, it’ll create such a bond! My favourite part of Warhammer is painting the minis. I love putting them together, choosing which Orc is wielding a great weapon, which is an Arrer Boy, which dual wielding Choppas! Truth be told when we want to PLAY Warhammer, we log into Warhammer Online! I can’t explain how excited I am to get that big box-set of Greenskins!!! I have my old Black Orc box set I never painted assembled and ready to paint! My wife got me all the paints and brushes I could need, even a small portable Airbrush to help get the highlighting and shading done in new ways! Can ya tell????? lol The subreddits like this and minipainting have some amazingly talented and welcoming people you’ll probably ever find, I can tell you that much. I literally joined reddit just to post, ask and interact with the people here that are into painting Warhammer minis… I’m eager to get set up this weekend off from work to try all of these new ways to paint and sit down with my wife and show her all that I have learned, ask her advice, share ideas and colour schemes and just have a blast! Please make sure to post pics of your works in progress and finished minis!! Can’t wait to see what you get working on……..even if it IS stinky elfses!! ;)

LeamHEAVY

Painting nights are some of the best dates I've had with my gf. Some of the best days and evenings I've spent with friends too. Me and and the gf did a painting sesh double date meeting my friends new gf and it was so less awkward than how that sort of thing usually goes at a restaurant or pub. It's nice to share you chaotic creative side with friends while just being able to talk and hang too. If you're wanting a smaller scale warhammer game to play with your partner, look into Warhammer Underworlds. It's AOS fantasy so not very compatible model wise with TOW fantasy but its a great small game that can be played on weekday evenings without eating too much time. The warbands used in it are like 3-7 models too so you can paint them up in a weekend easily.

Sw0rdMaiden

Hiya newbie! Wargaming/RPG Mom here to give you a few recommendations. For a fuzzy warm friendly vibe check out YouTube channels: Rogue Hobbies, Goobertown Hobbies, and Jordan Sorcery. An excellent battle report channel is Rogue Element Gaming. Next check out Forest Dragon miniatures. They are the absolute best and super smol (10 mm) Warmaster sculpts in the world, especially the Wood Elves! Larger scale (28 to 32 mm) wood/sylvan/wild elf miniatures can be found from various sources: Games Workshop's Age of Sigmar Sylvaneth (some are a bit fiddly), Titanforge "Sylvan" and "Red Leaf Elves" collections, HoloMinatures "Wood Elves", and Last Sword Miniatures "Tree Kin" are all beautiful sculpts. Belksasar 3dprint and 3dartdigital (both on Myminifactory) make gorgeous faerie sculpts! These last two require a 3d printer, but check Etsy just in case. I don't care for the current incarnation of the game, the Old World (ToW), preferring 6th edition. However those physical books are not always easy to find. ToW is your best bet on finding more gamers in your area, although you may need to download pdf's as I believe GW struggles to keep up with demand. Warhammer Fantasy lore is rather spread across many publications including mainly rulebooks and army books (9 editions), WHF Role Play books (4 editions), novels, and White Dwarf magazines over many decades, but you can get some decent summaries from various sites and YT channels. Gotrek and Felix novels by William King are a fun look at the Warhammer world from a character duo perspective. Ebooks are about all you will find at a reasonable price these days. Paints I recommend are Pro Acryl (Monument Hobbies), Army Painter Warpaints Fanatic, Two Thin Coats, and P3. Good luck and happy hobby times! 😊

Busy-Support-9399

Thank you so much! This is all such great info, I did not realize the scale of all of it! Thank god for the internet lol cozy YouTube videos sound like the perfect intro material. ❤️

AnyName568

Honestly just find some models you want to paint and worry about building a army later.

Busy-Support-9399

Ah but that would defeat the adhd “need to do it all at once” fixation hobby! But probably the best advice for my wallet so thank u 😅🙏🏻

Prestigious_Chard_90

Outside of Games Workshop stuff, Lost Kingdom's Mori Elves are very slick minis - combining a wood elf and dryad aesthetic.

Busy-Support-9399

Thank you! Gonna add that to the list!

LandOfGardeenia

Max Mini Shop is my favorite online minis shop. It has some super cool looking elves and I believe a unit that can be used as Treekin.

Happylildevaccidents

Welcome to the hobby, huzzah. Warhammer lore is amazing, I hear the book of choyer is quite good and it's on my to watch list Have a look in your area for a local game club, and see if they are into narrative play. It's great for a bit of roleplay in your battles, so you can create your own lore, and fantasy battle has a lot of fan created stuff for narrative play. But most of all have fun

Busy-Support-9399

Thanks so much! Huzzah

Happylildevaccidents

This may be the best lore video on warhammer fantasy ever, had to share https://youtu.be/O0TAmosME8s?si=WYnN1gAAS3Y8qmOk

Big-Dick_Bazuso

Da only fing dat needs knowin iz dat Grimgor Ironhide is da biggest and da baddest orc der eva wuz! WAAAAAAAAAAGGGGHH!!!

Prestigious_Chard_90

This. Orcs iz best!

Madcap_Miguel

The singular thread tying all orc players together is they just want a good fight, regardless of game system. Never change.

Busy-Support-9399

Ok I did not anticipate this post turning me into an Orc lover but I think it’s happening now

Madcap_Miguel

It might be a stereotype, but I've had one bad game in two decades (against an orc player). You'll be in good company.

Big-Dick_Bazuso

I like running mostly night goblins with fanatics, because goblin roulette is fun for everyone!

Big-Dick_Bazuso

My banner boi for the KnobBottum WAAAGGGHH!! https://www.reddit.com/r/Warhammer/s/P4e9VX5Wfs Orcs iz da facshun where it ain't about winnin, itz about krumpin liek a proppa git. Hoo needza win when youz 'avin a proppa skrap?

attonthegreat

Go with the rule of cool. If you think something is cool, pick up a start collecting as a starting point. Read up on the factions to see if that helps narrow down a selection. All the armies have strong points and weak points and it will take multiple games to really get the hang of things but when you do get the hang of it, it's a blast! Age of sigmar and 40k are both relatively easy to learn while the old world and 30k are a bit rule intensive :) I personally adore age of sigmar a bit more than 40k because fantasy is just so neat. I just started an all troll army for gloomspite gitz. I'm not too worried about whether it will work super well or not, they are just neat and fun. Plus I get a bunch of goblins high on mushrooms.

Busy-Support-9399

Tbh I am often a goblin high on mushrooms so whatever’s going on there i will definitely appreciate

attonthegreat

Hahaha amazing response! Gloomspite gitz for AoS! Check them out! A bunch of wacky high boyz trying to be all sneaky and wacky

Zebigbos8

Ayy another lady playing ToW! The closest thing you'll find to dryads are the wood elfs, who have some plant monsters, ents, than kind of stuff. If you're okay with 3D printing there should be easy enough to find 3D models for them on MyMiniFactory. I myself play as the Empire, who are all about gunpowder and fancy hats! Also beware that Warhammer is a very complicated game! So don't feel discouraged if you have a hard time wrapping your head around all the many, many rules. You'll get there if you persever, but if you decide it's not for you there are other similar games with simpler rules.

Busy-Support-9399

Thank you for the encouragement! I definitely could see myself getting freaked out by the learning curve. And yay fellow lady! 3D printing models is genius, i think some local libraries have public use ones??

Radcon5000

The hobby is huge, with multiple sci-fi and fantasy settings and dozens of factions to cater to almost everyone. Building and painting models have endless combinations, and a lot of people never get as far as actually playing the games. Back in the late 80's and early 90's, everything in the hobby was a lot more silly and fun, and, in my opinion, the games and lore have become more and more serious over time. Warhammer: The Old World is a bit of a throwback and feels a bit more like the fun old days, so hopefully, you'll find the community welcoming. Lore wise, i've always loved orcs and their particular brand of reckless stupidity. Just look up anything to do with the Waaaaaaaagh, squigs (and how to herd them), 'eadbanging, fanatics and Gork and Mork.

Busy-Support-9399

Yes, that’s what I’m realizing is how silly (in a good way) and focused on play as play it seems/seemed! And loooove to see Orcs portrayed in a kinder light (maybe?) I feel they are just some goofy guys with meathead antics

BenFellsFive

DO get enough of an army to play 1000-1500pts comfortably imho. As someone with probably ADHD too, you don't wanna be doing the 'paint a unit up then get another one' bc you'll never actually hit the table for 12 months. DONT buy 3000pts before you know the hobby or army/faction is for you. There's pretty bad return on selling secondhand stuff. Coming from 40k, TOW armies seem comparatively cheaper to build in terms of getting a few blocks of dudes and a few characters. The community is generally pretty open to 3rd party minis especially as the old world (as a setting and a rules system) has been dead and discarded by GW for ages. Don't feel bad if your paintjob isn't 10/10 golden demon standard. You can always do your highlights later or strip and repaint. Don't feel bad if your army isn't 100% painted in like 2 weeks. A fully painted army on gorgeous tables against another fully painted army is the goal but it's always a WIP. Best way to learn is to get some games under your belt. Maybe throw on some battle reports from youtube if you've got a painting desk, you'll learn stuff by osmosis. Someone'll probably say something about gatekeeping here or elsewhere so: everyone should be free to participate in the hobby (ie regardless of race, gender, politics, etc), but people shouldn't be free to demand changes to the hobby (ie 'why are brets so mean to their peasants?' 'Why are orcs so evil?' 'Why do these tournaments require painted models?' etc). In terms of demographics I haven't seen any women in our local TOW scene, and very few in the 40k scene. I don't think there's anywhere near as many as the DnD or MtG scene. I dont think it's just a vocal/visual minority, I think TOW just attracts a lot of Old Fantasy Dudes who either had their armies on ice or who kept playing in their basement for the last 20 years. Shouldn't be too much more of a hassle to accept girls into a WH group at a store, your mileage may vary depending on how your local is around girls in general. Some terrain might not hurt either; in our local everything is 40k ruined buildings so I've been much appreciated bringing a few hills along to game night for the dwarf players. Personal experience (albeit as a dude) I much prefer to game at home with my friends - you can swear and drink and smoke (if those are your vices), you can set the schedule how you want, you only have to see people you like, and there's no risk your shit will get stolen. And if you make your own scenery you can have pride in that too.

Busy-Support-9399

Great advice, thank you! I would probably agree hosting at home sounds much more fun but I might have to make some friends who’d humor me first lol. I can certainly appreciate you guys keeping the torch lit on this world / community. DND totally got a new breath of life after stranger things and the critical role folks. I wonder if Mr Cavill’s Warhammer series will do the same!

HappyTurtleOwl

Apart from the other advice given here, I would also recommend finding out if there is a Games Workshop store near you. Not only can you buy things there, but they are often good places to find others in this community. Ask the same stuff you’ve asked ITP, you might find people to play with there.

Busy-Support-9399

Will definitely need to make some friends in the community, thanks for the rec!

emcdunna

The best place to learn the lore about warhammer is in the physical rulebooks for the tabletop game. They have the kind of high level descriptions and history knowledge you want to know. If you're interested in the dryads, then getting an old wood elf army book or finding the pdf for free online would be a good place to start People have also made many lore videos on places like YouTube explaining the backstory and lore that is found in these books in an audio/visual format if that's more your thing I can't speak to how many warhammer fantasy battles players are women, but there's definitely a significant number of women interested in age of sigmar, war cry, and just in collecting and painting models. I recently spent about 30 minutes talking to a female games workshop employee about how to paint her night haunt army. There's new people joining all the time!

Busy-Support-9399

Love to hear it! Im sure theres ladies out there but I’m also really grateful to receive such kind feedback from the gents on this subreddit too! Thanks for the advice 🙏🏻

emcdunna

Absolutely!

deeple101

My only advice regarding playing the game is don’t chase the meta. If you like the game and enjoying playing the game you will be playing the game for a long time. Eventually what is “good” now will be “bad” and then become “good” once again; with all sorts of stops along the way. So buy the minis that you like, paint them however you want them to be painted, and win vicariously through them. Oh and never trust skaven.

Busy-Support-9399

Thank you! Nice to hear so many folks assuring you guys don’t take it *too* seriously, well, not in the rule stickler way anyway. And regarding skaven… 🫡

Szukov

Welcome to the show, mate. As one ADHS brain to another ADHS I can tell you tabletop is great. So many factions, models and lore to jump to, hyperfixate and never finish, it is paradise. I so that for 30 years and never stopped.

Busy-Support-9399

Sounds like an ADHD brain’s dream come true and all of their normie loved ones’ nightmare 😂 …can’t wait.

Szukov

That's what I meant. Like candy land. I have around 10 projects in 4 different games at the moment. It never gets boring.

Chapter_129

I've got a YouTube playlist set up for my friends I'm introducing to the hobby I'd be happy to share. It's meant to be an intro to the lore.

Busy-Support-9399

That would be so appreciated, thank you!

Chapter_129

No problem! This is targeted at getting them to understand Warhammer Fantasy so that we can all play Mordheim. https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLXBFjMPFbPVxG4VFQRkba6lAsetEZXvnZ&si=ncBXrSWhSiGvjgKU

BougredeNom

new to the hobby too. I advise you to focus on a faction you have interest in through models first then explore the lore of Warhammer through this faction. Kitbashing ( customising your minis) is a huge part of the hobby. So feel free to change some aspects of your models if you want to make them your own at 100%. Just keep in mind that if you want to play with them you need to respect weapons loadout and bases. but outside of that you are free to make whatever you like

Busy-Support-9399

Thank you! Hope you’re enjoying your new hobby as well!

BougredeNom

If some minis are too expensive for you always look on second-hand website. The secret is to be really patient, people kinda try to make profit of what they resell most of the time but while digging deep enough you will find the good deal you where searching for: when you find it grab it quickly because if it's a gem for you it's a gem for someone else! If you really want to play quickly I recommend you to focus all your hobby money on that faction you want to play. The more you will learn about the hobby the more minis you will want to buy because well all factions end to be interesting. I would avoid spending on too much faction at the same time UNLESS you only care for painting/ building or you have enough money to do so. The quickest way to have a game is by buying a box of warcry warband ( the small team scale game in AoS universe) or if you have people around you that play mordheim ( the fantasy ancestor of warcry) I recommend it because you can make YOUR minis, your little team completely unique

RosieWargaming

Welcome to the women of Warhammer club! If you like fae and dryads the Wood Elves have everything you need.

Busy-Support-9399

Hi! So happy to be here! Sounds totally up my alley, I think that’ll be my first stop 🫶🏻

OnlyRoke

No worries! First you'll probably have to make a choice of which Warhammer setting is best for you. We have three of those. I'll omit Warhammer 40k as it is space fantasy rather than "medieval" fantasy. Warhammer Fantasy is effectively a more grounded standard fantasy setting. All the classic LotR tropes are here and then some extra races like sentient dinosaurs or ratmen. The Fantasy version has Wood Elves. They're effectively the Mirkwood Elves from LotR and Hobbit. Elves through and through, but with a nature vibe. They can call upon sentient treemen and forest animals of varying sizes. Is that what you mean by a "Fae army"? Would the "Legolas vibe" be good enough for that? Also, mind you, Dryads in Warhammer are, in general, terrifying person-sized wood-creatures. They're not depicted as attractive forest spirits like in Magic, or World of Warcraft perhaps. If your intent is to have magical faerie creatures and attractive woodland sprites as an army and Legolas Elves won't do it for you, then I might suggest Age of Sigmar. It's sort of a continuation of Fantasy (world blew up, eons later a few surviving gods found new worlds to populate) and relatively controversial among the Warhammer Fantasy crowd, as the company effectively killed our game and replaced it by something else. However, that should not matter to you. AoS is a bit different, more "high magic" with different planes, etc, but they do have a full-on "Seelie Court Faeries" kind of faction called the Sylvaneth. They're partially leftover models from Fantasy (Dryads, Treemen) and new sculpts that are essentially all elven spirits who have possessed trees and plants and they're now amalgamations of plant and elf, riding giant dragonflies, or stag beetles, or having full on winged warriors who wear "insect wing backpacks". So when you say Fae Army, I imagine Sylvaneth rather than Wood Elves, honestly. However, the choice is entirely up to you of course! Once you figure out which faction and setting appeals to you more, then we can give you tips on how to get started on either of them.

Busy-Support-9399

Wow, great information thank you for sharing! Tbh, those both sound awesome. Giant and terrifying tree people sounds preeetty cool and i definitely love the Legolas vibe, but the continuation sounds great as well! I think im eager to start with the classics, hopefully pay some respect to the roots (pun intended) but I’ll have to read up a bit more on the AoS stuff too!

OnlyRoke

For sure! No problem! I'll just give you a quick rundown on how to purchase Warhammer stuff, haha. Firstly, avoid the official Warhammer store like the plague. It's generally overpriced. Any local third party brick-and-mortar place and every kind of bigger third party online retailer is a bunch cheaper! I suggest waylandgames or elementgames, if you're from the UK for example. Secondly, Warhammer Fantasy is no longer being sold. It is either Age of Sigmar these days, or Warhammer The Old World, which is basically a rebooted Fantasy that launched a couple of months ago (with narrative differences that don't concern the long-lived elven races or nature itself :P). So far, the only way to purchase Wood Elves was through Age of Sigmar boxes, because Wood Elves were split up into the Sylvaneth (where you find aforementioned treepeople of all kinds) and Wanderers, who were part of the Cities of Sigmar faction for AoS (all the elven guys and gals). CoS was a faction that could be best described as "the most normal races from Fantasy, thrown together, living in jolly cooperation". It was old Empire humans, dwarves, High Elves and Wood Elves combined. However, Cities of Sigmar has received a human-centric overhaul last year. All the remaining non-human models and old human models are currently not being sold anymore. That includes the Wood Elves. Don't worry though, the Wood Elves aren't gone forever. The Old World release cycle has, so far, released big army boxes for three races (Greenskins, most recently, and Bretonians and Tomb Kings as the two launch factions). A fourth, Dwarves, are on the horizon as well. These boxes largely consist of old sculpts and some newly sculpted models for some heroes. What I'm trying to say is, the Wood Elves will very likely also receive such a box and a release wave of this sort. So if you want to go into the army hard, I recommend waiting for that box set, because they're usually decent value (and old Fantasy models are currently pretty pricey on eBay for example). If you still wanna get cracking with some models tho, the Age of Sigmar boxes are perfectly fine to start out with! Dryads, Treemen, Drycha Hamadreth (a hero), Tree-Revenants (spirits who possess trees) and Kurnoth Hunters (slightly tree dudes with swords or bows) are all part of the Sylvaneth range as well as the Wood Elves. Only difference is the shape and size of the bases. AoS uses round bases, Fantasy and Old World use square bases. My personal recommendation for getting into the hobby tho? Get on eBay and search for some second hand stuff that's interesting and affordable. Dryads should be plentiful and cheap, or some of the smaller Sylvaneth heroes (like the Branchwych and Branchwraith). Also pretty good to start painting, since they're all just bark-skinned with some leaves. Not much to mess up there, haha.

You may fond interesting to look for Mordheim (it's a particular piece of lore from warhammer that is also it's own game), there you will find an option to play more narrative games with a little number of minis.

Busy-Support-9399

Oo I will check this out, thank you!

roonzy94

My wife introduced me to Warhammer, most people that play are very feminine males who were neglected and thus created a more masculine war verse persona imo, im 6’1 and most people in stores by tables look at the floor rather than me when i want to ask them something…. My point here is its an open hobby that isn’t masculine its a fantasy in grim dark welcome to the hobby you don’t have to point out your gender no one will care except rejects of both extreme sides of society. My suggestion if u want a femme army is slannesh, any elven faction, daughters of khaine, slyvaneth, new vampires army had a matriarch were lady aswell. Chaos warriors have a female dark oath leader, sigmar got a new female leader, 40k has many options depending on if your okay with editing models and sisters of battle.

Busy-Support-9399

Thank you! I totally get what you’re saying, I think a lot of women have some fear of being put down in similar communities (gaming for example) but i love that your wife introduced you! We’re definitely so much more than our gender or appearance. I love feminine things but the gritty fantasy aesthetic is absolutely just as fun and why I was drawn to the game! Thank you for the including the female character suggestions too. And super happy to hear this game has been an outlet for men to get in touch with creativity and hobbies outside the traditional “grrrr football” (no shade to you warhammer sports fans haha) all in all we’re much too complex for silly societal boxes so we might as well play with some silly fantasy miniatures and have a ball 😝

AlexStonehammer

Not sure looking at the floor is a feminine trait, more non-gender-specific social anxiety.

bertimann

There is no need to say "pls don't bully me yall". It won't stop bullies from doing the thing and maybe even encourage them. And in this sub I'd be surprised if you'd find anyone who's trying to give you a hard time anyways. I'm glad you found the hobby and hope you'll have the good times you're looking for :)

Busy-Support-9399

It was meant to be more silly than anything! Bullies gonna bully. But definitely feeling very supported here! It can certainly be a toss up for gals in similar spaces but this one seems quite lovely and welcoming 😊 glad to be here!

draraist

Just my two cents and certainly not trying to make you feel unwelcome but you sound like you are looking for D&D or similar not Warhammer

Busy-Support-9399

I’ve played dnd but am definitely more drawn to the world, hobby of painting and miniature design and game lore here! Some comments have pointed me in the right direction and given some great suggestions! excited to get started :)

Frontier_Justice0405

Welcome, and Be careful with Nagash propaganda Or you'll end up eiyth tons of Bone reapers

Coziestpigeon2

Just tossing it out there, Age of Sigmar is generally a much more newbie-friendly game and community, with simpler rules.

bopyw

Hi there. So Warhammer is split up into a few games, with 2 of those games being fantasy themed. There is Warhammer fantasy/The Old World, the game this sub is dedicated to and Age of Sigmar, which is set in a more high fantasy world. In Warhammer Fantasy the faction that's all about the woods are the wood elves. A group of mysterious mystical elves that live in Atheloren, a magical super forest that has a tendency to murder people. Within the wood elves there also exist the forest spirits of Atheloren, who are made of dryads and treemen and so on. In AoS there exist the spiritual successors of those forest spirits: the Sylvaneth. The Sylvaneth are an entire faction of tree spirits led by the goddess of life who rides atop her giant beetle. Here's a link to some of the [models](https://ageofsigmar.lexicanum.com/wiki/List_of_Sylvaneth_units) of the Sylvaneth. And here is a link to some videos about both the [Sylvaneth ](https://youtu.be/FAdVhFzJf1c?si=o1a-DzwoCzcoegu9) and the [Wood Elves.](https://youtu.be/XHi1yjLL2mY?si=fpAwsAocmmmAYdl3) Hope this helps you out. Edit: would also suggest checking out the age of sigmar sub Reddit, they are pretty cool dudes and dudettes as well

Fae military sounds awesome! I am also in the hobby just for the craft aspect. I used to play Warhammer fantasy in the 90s/2000s but I prefer just to paint them nowadays.

Welcome to the Hobby! Happy you found us :) i got adhd as well, Warhammer is an awesome Hobby for this, there is Always another Kind of topic your Impulse Goblin can jump on. Woodelves are a very scary Army to fight against because they are good at Hit and Run tactics. If you want to get the Most Out of them, you probably want to study the new movement Rules very closely, there is a lot of fun stuff you can do with them. Regarding modeling: a friend of Mine built treemen Just Out of gnarly Wood and small branches he found, pretty cheap :D i can Show Pics If you are interested. Unnecessary Mini Project inspiration: The old world Rules have reintroduced the forest Spirits as Upgrades for glade-Lords/Ladies and tree-people, you can find them in the regular woodelf rules. You could for example sculpt them yourself Out of super-sculpey or greenstuff, If you are crafty. You then could make them attachable to the Models so you can Change them depending in ehich Upgrades you Chose in the respektive Battle. These kinds of Projects are a lot of fun and many people enjoy this Level of Detail because it increases you Level of Personal identification with an Army. The Same friend of mine who Had built the tree-people Out of Wood, has changed the aesthetic of the Wood elves more into a shamanism or tribes-people direction. He wanted to Focus more on the fact that woodelves are one of the Classic neutral forces. But there are a lot of other possibilities and whatever you do: you are doing it absolutely correct, whatever anyone might Tell you. Don't watch the Lore Videos of arch-warhammer, he is a Nazi :) I Hope you have a lot of fun and everyone is friendly :)

From the hobby and collecting side, my advice is start small. There is a running meme in all of the Warhammer communities about a term called the box of shame: gamers' collections of unpainted, unassembled minis. Start with a small box. Fully assemble and paint the models in it before getting any other box. If you enjoy it, go look for a bigger box that has a good deal (the start collecting boxes are probably your best bet). The best way to avoid the box of shame is this cycle of one box fully painted and assembled each time. With that all being said, there is no actual "shame" in having unfinished hobby projects. Feel free to go nuts and buy lots of minis all at once. The plastic crack is calling to you. As an aside, don't be afraid to branch out from GW products. While their sculpts are amazing, they can get really expensive. Especially if you are into TOW kits. There are a lot of kits for other games that work as proxies (oathmark, frostgrave and kings of war are some of my personal favorites) and there is an infinite amount of options in the 3d printing space for proxy models. Most people in the community are super okay with proxy models especially for TOW. If you run into anyone who isn't just make a mental note not to play with them again. It is fine that they want to play against GW models only, but it is also fine if you want to use other companies little toy soldiers. Best of luck to you in this space! I hope your in-person experience is as inviting and kind as this comment section has been.

LandOfGardeenia

As another gamer gal, I would just like to say we exist despite what some guys in the hobby seem to think. There ARE wholesome dudes in the hobby too but they often get overshadowed by the loud sexist weirdos that populate some online groups for the game. As far as wood elf advice goes, the Dryads are a screening unit meaning their main purpose is to be sacrificed in order to bait someone into you being able to counter charge. Treekin and Treemen are pretty fun and Sisters of the Thorn are surprisingly durable. My favorite screening gimmick personally is having as many minimum sized units of Glade Guard as possible and space them out just right to make your opponent cry tears of rage as they struggle to get to the objective because you’re blocking their movement with several cheap units while pelting them with as many arrows as possible.

humansrpepul2

If you go to an event, even with a couple hundred people, expect to be the only woman you'll run into. It skews masculine more than pretty much any other community I can think of. As for dryads, that's the fantasy range Age of Sigmar. If you really want to place space dryads, you can absolutely "kit-bash" by cutting off pieces and adding them to other models. But it'll be twice as expensive that way.

Spoony_Bart

If you would like to build up a dryad/forest-spirit-only army, then Chris from SN Battle Reports has a [fantastically painted force](https://youtu.be/eCnng5PttT8?si=jb4dlYwJ2IHazzPf) (time-stamped) that will get your creative juices flowing. As someone who is returning to the hobby after a 20 year hiatus myself, I found out that nowadays 3D printing offers an amazing outlet to customize your collection, so if any specific Games Workshop models don't do it for you, look up alternative ones over on [My Mini Factory](https://www.myminifactory.com) (some manufacturers offer outright physical prints, or try Etsy, if any of the designs floats your boat). Be warned, though: GW does not allow 3rd party models in their clubs and competitions -- not a problem, if you are like me and mostly want to pursue the painting and modelling aspect of the hobby and have an occasional non-competitive match with your friends. And if you are open to collecting an alternative force to Wood Elves, then the upcoming Troll Horde army for Warhammer: The Old World is actually led by a matriarch called a [Troll Hag](https://www.warhammer.com/en-GB/shop/orc-goblin-tribes-troll-hag-2024) (and the GW model sculpted by [Trish Carden](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4vhMow1U8-0) is legendary). Trolls in Warhammer are arguably even more silly and, well, stupid (it is an actual rule in the game, I kid you not), even when compared to Tolkien's Middle Earth, and the whole army is very much tongue-in-cheek and a welcome respite from the sometimes oppressively grim and dark universe of Warhammer. Playwise, the model count is very small, especially if you forego goblins and orcs, so you could quickly build up a large force that counts as few as 15-20 models. That and there are plenty of characterful models from the classic Warhammer lines, as well as Age of Sigmar [Troggoths ](https://www.warhammer.com/en-GB/plp?search=troggoth)(not to mention alternative sculpts like the Avatars of War trolls, for example). Most of all, try to find fun in whichever aspect of the hobby speaks to you -- between collecting, painting, converting, playing and lore-building there's plenty of stuff there's plenty of stuff to enjoy and geek out about.

War_and_Pieces

Step one to learning the lore is to get a basic understanding of Late Medieval/Early Modern Europe and the Holy Roman Empire

Welcome! I'm not quite a woman (trans femme nonbinary person here) but I'd like to welcome on behalf of the non-men Fantasy fans. There are plenty of women into this game and many more into the hobby at large. You're coming in at an exciting time! In regards to lore, there's a lot out there, tons of books and supplements and all that. Right now with the new edition of the game, The Old World, being a prequel, set before the original game line, a lot of the iconic characters from the games past won't be playable, and some things are definitely going to be different. A whole bunch of factions aren't going to get further releases (at least for now), but still have an extremely important impact on the lore and the world. If dryads and fae are your thing, it sounds like the Wood Elves might be the faction for you. They are similar to traditional woodland elves, but with a Warhammer spin. They live in the forests of Athel Loren, and interact with dryads and some fae spirits. As a whole, the elf factions probably have the most models that are actually women. Bretonnia has a few damsels and princesses, and there's more in the Legacy factions (like the Lahmia bloodline of vampire baddies) or Morathi of the Dark Elves. As for how people play, there's a ton of ways to interact with the hobby. Some people only read the lore or paint models, but for most of us, we're all in, learning lore, building models, painting and modeling, and playing the game itself. Myself, being someone with a lot of anxiety, struggles to go to game stores and play with strangers, so most of my tabletop gaming is done with my sister, partner and friends. However now that Fantasy is back, I'm much more motivated to go out and play. Finally, there will always be shitty dudes who won't treat you with respect, and this is true in the hobby as well. Don't pay them any mind. There are many more women and nonbinary people playing now then when I started 10 years ago, and the scene is becoming more diverse all the time. On the top of my mind I can't think of any women with Fantasy specific YouTube channels but there's a good amount of women operated channels in the hobby Right now I can think of Rogue Hobbies, Dana Howl, Lyla Mev the mini witch, Mandy's minis, Wargamer girl (mostly Warmachine content) Also, check out the International Women's Day issues of 28mag, it's a magazine focusing on the hobby as a whole, particularly in diy games. https://28-mag.com/ Have fun! Feel free to dm if you have a question

Wood spirits and vampire baddies?!🥳 thank you for your response this is all amazing info! And totally, I’m new to Warhammer but not new to being a woman (in general) or in nerdy / fantasy spaces. It exists everywhere 🤷🏻‍♀️ so glad to hear you’ve found joy in it for so long! I strongly believe the girls gays and theys gotta look out for each other but I’m so happy to see such a supportive comment section in general on this post! Seems a lot of the community is here for the love of it and happy to have others share that!

C'mon man let's be a supportive community or maybe just don't say anything at all if you don't have anything nice to say

Busy-Support-9399

Don’t worry, the overwhelmingly kind response to this post is evidence enough that this is quite the supportive community! Thank you for this though 🫶🏻
