There is no accidental cheating. Cheating involve malicious intention, honest misplay happened all the time.

JohnFoxpoint

Thanks for the reframing. I appreciate it.

AlexMohr-237

Every so often a game I play with my friend this happens. He feels bad. I reassure him I just read the cards completely and he forgets certain effects. It's an honest mistake. Don't beat yourself up

Ancient-Sort3847

I played cyber dragons when I started, and whenever my opponent ashed my cyber emergency I would discard a card to add it back from the gy because that’s what I thought I did, and my opponents let me because it gave them card advantage or because they didn’t know how the card worked. We’ve all been there, just enjoy the game and keep asking questions :)

Prestigious-Hat-5978

Wait... I thought that's what cyber emergency does. Have I been playing it wrong?

Rolebo

Cyber emergency can only do that if the activation was negated, Ash negates the effect

Prestigious-Hat-5978

Ah thanks, I've only been playing for a few months so I'm sure I've made lots of mistakes like this.

hferyoa

That's what *all* Floo players say! /s ^but ^^not ^^^really

Crimson_mage200

As a floo player, I am here to rebutw the not really. But I didn't activate eglen search earlier this turn, I swead

hferyoa

And how many times did you use each effect of Map this turn?

Crimson_mage200

Once this turn, and once in your turn

Djangough

That feeling when you summon a whole bunch of monster in 1 turn.

killerb00ts66

It's ez to keep track in MD but irl is a different story sometimes 😅

eyal282

I have proof several times where I activated the banished Eglen and reported it ( I may have been wrong, Eglen is the best add )

HarleyQuinn_RS

I don't think I've ever watched a locals match that *didn't* involve at least one accidental illegal play or procedure. Be it mandatory trigger effects not going on the chain first. Cards which missed their activation timing still being activated. Properly resolving effects of monsters that were negated because they left the field at activation. Negating summons that occurred during a chain. Activating a card or effect when a mandatory part of the effect could not be applied (and isn't one of the exclusions to this 'rule'). Don't even get me started on the Damage Step violations. There's all sorts that can be mistakenly done, yugioh is insanely complex and there's a lot to remember and keep track of.

JohnFoxpoint

It seems to motivate me to learn other archetypes as well to spot more of this from my opponents lol

fbjim

The first time I played Purrely in person I went an entire match without paying 500 LP to active My Friend Purrely. Thankfully this didn't actually affect anything lol.

Theprincerivera

What does this, “activation timing missed” mean? I’ve seen this a few times. I usually play with duelist nexus and to be honestly the amount of rules is kinda intimidating. Real duals with the same deck I’ve build I just feel more lost.

Tri_Force7

As in like (if I'm correct) Ashing a card after they already started resolving, or activating a "next standby phase" effect the turn after out should be activated or something

Theprincerivera

When does that opportunity pass? So like if chain link 2 begins?

Tri_Force7

Pretty much. If the game state has moved on from the point of activation. Say they destroy my BEWD, then summon a monster to their side (continuing their turn) them I go "Oh! special summon Jet Dragon!!" I've technically missed the window

HarleyQuinn_RS

https://www.reddit.com/r/Yugioh101/comments/k4ky6f/a_guide_to_the_rules_behind_the_jargon/ Scroll to section 2 for an explanation.

blahdedah1738

Turns out I've been doing the fake chain block with Rangbali and Garunix this entire time without knowing. I didn't play during Green Baboon time so I was unaware. Won soooooo many games

HarleyQuinn_RS

The classic "one hand self-summon trigger effect, per chain" rule. That gets a lot of people because it's not expressly written on any card, nor as part of any official rulebook. Also one I now see constantly broken at locals because of Fire Kings. Although the popularity of Fire Kings is bringing this somewhat obscure rule more into public consciousness. Another I see a lot now because of Fire Kings is players not putting all trigger effects on the chain first. e.g. Something like, turn player destroys opponent's Garunix Eternity. CL1 Turn player's trigger effect, CL2 Arvata on field to Negate, CL3 trigger effect of Garunix Eternity in GY.

LessInfluence5217

As the "unnoficial" judge at my locals I unironically sometimes play worse cause I'm so focused on listening and watching other games around me checking for accidental illegal moves that I don't focus as hard on my own game

JadeTaGem

this kinda makes it seem like this game sucks ass

God-of-Greed

The question is: have you understood and learned from it? The one thing is that you know about your cards, the other is that you take that knowledge and use it for duels in general.

JohnFoxpoint

Some of it, yeah. One of the cards says "each time" something happens. I haven't seen this language much. So I assumed if the trigger happened twice at once, it triggered twice. But they happen *at one time*. Anyway, that was a good lesson.

God-of-Greed

Out of curiosity: what card do you mean?

JohnFoxpoint

{{Crystal Tree}}

HumbleGarbage1795

There’s a simple solution to this: don’t play this card!

JohnFoxpoint

Booo haha

MACubing73

Crystal tree is not the play lol. Watch neshy and dread guy to become a crystal master.

HumbleGarbage1795

No, seriously. Crystal tree is really not a card you want to have in a Crystal beast deck.

mrdynomite

I also play CB at locals and I can confirm crystal tree is not great. It's pretty slow.

JohnFoxpoint

One of the other cards I misunderstood was Ultimate Crystal Rainbow Dragon Overdrive's summoning condition. Given CB in the spell/trap don't count, crystal tree is less helpful.

Grape_Jamz

I play crystal tree. Its only good in my going second jank crystal abundance otk. I think theres better options now

KameronEX

This is why it says "monster(s)" so if you summon multiple monsters at the same time it will only go off once.

BastionBotYuGiOh

EpicWickedgnome

At my first locals someone made Bagooska, then proceeded to attack position it, Attack, then back to defense position for the rest of the game. Thought the card was super unbeatable. Read it afterward and realized it was just a mistake.

Giorgas991

That's not a misplay that's just plain cheating

Bugatsas11

This looks like cheating honestly

JagmeetSingh2

Dude was using season 1 of the anime rules it seems like loool

microferret

It's pretty easy to make mistakes. I wouldn't fret about it though; nobody's going to really care too much at regular locals unless you're actually trying to cheat.

jk844

The interesting thing about the rules of Yugioh compared to other card games (or most games in general) is that most of the rules incorporate an aspect of “mens rea” (guilty mind). Meaning it’s only cheating if you intended to cheat. If you accidentally break the rules you’re not cheating, you just made a misplay/mistake.

killed597

I didn't understand that "onomatopaira" needed me to send something from the hand or field to the graveyard to activate it for at least a few weeks, and I found out when my locals judge just said "what are you pitching?" when I activated it. You could see the colour drain from my face, apparently. We just laughed it off in the end and I corrected my mistake, but if you've been playing a card incorrectly accidentally, 9/10 people will try and help you improve your understanding of the rules.

Shimfinity

Misunderstandings happen! Its tricky out there, every tourney i go to i learn something new

Cacho__

One way I accidentally cheated back in the day was this combo I made up: you get maiden with eyes of blue and influence dragon on the field. maiden’s effect is that: When a card or effect is activated that targets this card (Quick Effect): You can Special Summon 1 "Blue-Eyes White Dragon" from your hand, Deck, or GY. When this card is targeted for an attack: You can negate the attack, and if you do, change the battle position of this card, then you can Special Summon 1 "Blue-Eyes White Dragon" from your hand, Deck, or GY. You can only use 1 "Maiden with Eyes of Blue" effect per turn, and only once that turn. While influence dragon’s effect was simply: Once per turn: You can target 1 face-up monster you control; it becomes Dragon-Type until the End Phase. With this logic I though you can target and force maiden’s effect by targeting her with influence dragon’s effect giving you a free Blue Eyes White Dragon. However someone told me a few years back that effect doesn’t work by doing that.

Technical_Error9265

Ah, I’m pretty sure that’s not an accidental chest, that’s how the card works. I have absolutely used my own cards to target Maiden and activate her effects, in MD before

Cacho__

I’m gonna have to try it in master duel.

Technical_Error9265

Yeah I target her with the other eyes of blue girl, who sends an effect to grave to summon Blue Eyes, which lets you put two on the field

MessBusiness397

Happens to me all the time I usually just apologize and explain my realised cheat (stuff like specail summon spright blue ontop of a link 2). It goes like "whoops sry im not allowed to do that". I then just reverse the gamestate up to the last leal gamestate. I also had some illegal plays which I realizes way to late. I once banished a normal monster via plunder patroll moerk (hes only allowed to banish effect monsters). I realized that the next day via an online simulator. If its in locals just dont worry to much about it. Afterall were all humans were all making mistakes. Locals are usual a more casual setting anyways. Just try to play legal and ask a Judge for help, if you don't know if your play is legal or not. In case of accidental cheating, it happens, both players should look out for that. Ask your opponent what his cards do, or read them yourself a lot of cards say stuff like "you can only summon -monster type- for the rest of your turn". Misunderstanding cards is normal if you play a new deck thats part of learning a deck. Just suprised that no one noticed the illegal plays you did. Last but not least you don't have to report that to your locals since you probably didnt attend any specail event. Just be chill about it going tro locals is about having fun playing yu gi oh.

JohnFoxpoint

> surprised that no one noticed Most of my opponents have communicated they are unfamiliar with Crystal Beasts. Maybe they know the general gimmick, but they haven't played them or against them.

Organic_Point_2489

Yeah I accidentally cheated in master duel solo mode by accidentally installing a bot that lets me play with banned cards. Accidents happen all the time

Cunningchaos

Bugs can happen on those simulators as well but it's pretty rare. I remember I made a really weird mill deck that just wouldn't let me fully mill my opponent for some reason if they didn't have enough cards, so I had to actually wait for those draw phases but it only happened occasionally. There was also a problem with convulsion of nature and a bunch of other card combos (I think the macro cosmos+ convulsion+ soul absorption+ necroface and something else idr) not operating correctly, it would lock me out from something but it's been years since it happened I don't remember the details

asap_goya

Same but when I learn decks, they ban important cards and I move to the next 🥹. I also could’ve won cause I could’ve activated a card and thought I couldn’t . Ppl said after match I could and one time I was mopping this feign for yugioh ( I say feign cause he kept saying hurry up yet he took forever on his turns … then asked for two redos which I should’ve declined bcus that’s how I lost and he was rude 🥲) but like you, KNOW the cards and when or if you can play them 😭

HeWhoBendsShadows

Maybe try using advanced crystal beasts instead of the regulars as they are far stronger

Medium_Assignment612

This is heretical advice

HeWhoBendsShadows

What makes it heretical? Have you tried the dark versions of the crystal beasts or just looking to disagree?

Medium_Assignment612

Just a joke bud, Crystal Beasts aren't actually a religion.

V077

I’ve made goofy mix-ups too like I confused “select a card(s)” and “target x card(s)” as one in the same for awhile

Fvader69

Who reads cards in this economy 🤔 😅

r2-z2

I mean we thought mst negated cards till my friend told us he googled how it worked. Ya gotta learn, you’re not gonna learn it all right away. I’m still learning new rules too

MLDKF

You're not the only one. I've made quite a few mistakes. Heck sometimes I'll make the error, the opponent will know that the ruling is different, but will let me cook anyway and tell me later.

kudasaishikuda

Its Summoning Rainbow Dragon despite having 8 Crystal Beasts in the GY isnt it?, ive been there and i dont think people even know about it much less its a stupid ruling that you cant call out rainbow dragon despite having all the crystal beasts in the GY

GrixisSchmixis

I would never recommend learning on edopro or Master duel or sites like that because you will never learn to understand your cards, just to click yes or oh I can activate this here cool.

Mandoge

It’s all part of learning man. Just don’t do it again. If I commit a major misplay with a deck that cheats my opponents I give them the game win then move to the next game. It’s unfair to me

BusydaydreamerA137

It’s a complicated game and I’m pretty sure all players did at some point.

Zaknel-The-Pony

Nothing quite tops how, when I was a kid playing, we thought that Red Nova Dragon's "cannot be destroyed by an opponent's card effects" meant "ignores all other card effects, except when you don't want it to."

Zarvanis-the-2nd

A few years ago, my Phantom Knights deck beat a Branded Dragoon deck because both of us were too illiterate to realize that Fog Blade can't target Dragoon. It's the 2nd fucking sentence on the card, too.

Ok-Somewhere-8831

It's all good, I've been playing for years on and off I sometimes have to re read cards to fully understand effects etc don't worry yourself everyone does it at some point

SurrealStorm12

Accidentals mishaps like this happen alot, thats why me and my friends all play several friendly matches against each other with our decks and sometimes swap decks so we both have an understanding of it and the other person can correct them if its wrong until we fully know and understand our decks. Good way of learning whilst still playing and having fun against mates

Lieutenant_Nv_Us

It happens to the best of us. I’ve been playing competitive for about 6 years and I’m constantly learning something new. Even when I feel like I’ve learned all there is to know and I feel I fully understand everything, NOPE. There’s always something you’ve either never seen, never knew worked the way it did, or simply something you forgot and just assumed. No one is perfect but eventually you’ll get to a point where the majority of the game is simply second nature

Bugatsas11

Why are playing an extremely compilated game in which the outcome can be different depending on a semi colon and wording. Mistakes are made even at a YCS level by pro players that they have been playing the game for decades. Of course you are making mistakes, everyone is. If you do not have any malicious intention and your opponent does not double check, it is not your fault

Hctaz

I remember in High School I was playing a Cyber Dragon deck against my friend playing just Dragons. This was before the change to Future Fusion, so I used the card to send my entire deck to the graveyard, hit an Overload Fusion, and my friend proceeded to flip up Scrap-Iron Scarcrow. We both thought that, since the trap was being flipped face down on my turn that meant it could be used repeatedly. I thought the card was absolutely busted LOL My Chimeratech Overdragon can attack your monster 20 times, but they all just got negated. And then I learned much later that the rule isn’t that you have to set a trap first and can’t use it until your opponent’s turn, it’s that a trap set on the field cannot be activated until THE START OF THE NEXT TURN unless otherwise specified. I think this was the first trap that set itself during your opponent’s turn so I think we all were just confused on what that actually meant.

Electronic_d0cter

Honestly I find online sims helped me so much at understanding rulings. The simulator will do something that I didn't think worked how it does and I'll be able to work back in my head to see why it did what it did
