China bans fireworks in all major cities during lunar new years. It's really interesting watching fireworks at eye level in a skyscraper for 4 hours strait.

Probably not because this isn't really the same thing. I'd be surprised if cops are going to look the other way on the main day/week they've been instructed to enforce the ban.
It kinda makes me want to puke to play devil's advocate for that shameful government but that measure is pretty common to reduce the expected chaos. For example, the day of music festivals or other great gatherings, the city housing them will put a temporary ban on selling alcohol for the day.
It just means you have to prepare in advance, but latecomers simply there to join the fun, for better or worse, won't have ammo. Just like it will diminish a little the number of people that will abuse it and end up in the EMT tents.
To go back on the fireworks, something that would actually stop any violence from occurring would be to reign in law enforcement and not let them loose on the population at the second someone even looks their way.
*But sure,* to prevent riots started because of police brutality, don't restrain the police, forbid fireworks.

In the US some states have bans on fireworks but the cops look the other way on Independence Day. I wonder if the same thing will happen in France.
