Yes, I remember the olden days of 9 months ago. Do you even get premium access for a golden upvote now? I know you get like 80 cents if you're an eligible user signed up through the contributer program. Seems like a lot of extra steps to make rewarding users for comments substantially worse.
Apparently someone lied about ohtani meeting with the fan or mistranslated him saying that he didn’t meet the fan the night he hit the home run. Idk theres been so much mistranslation around ohtani lately its hard to keep track of
There was a weird mistranslation--weird because although the mistake would have been easy to make without context in a written text the translator knew the context because he would have been the one to accompany Ohtani to meet the fan if Ohtani had met the fan.
Japanese doesn't require the subject of a sentence to be stated. A more literal translation of what Ohtani said would be "The fan got talked to. The ball was retrieved."
The translator assumed that Ohtani was the person who did this, and he translated as such. He was wrong.
If you asked some people who could to translate the sentences out of context, they'd probably assume the person was speaking in first person as well.
The issue here is that a professional translator should get clarification before make these assumptions or have some prior knowledge of likely questions like this before entering going into the interview.
Translating between languages is difficult even in similar languages. Japanese and English are very different. We should give the guy some slack, but we should expect him to improve from his mistakes as well.
Ohtani was using Ippe for literally everything to the point that he didn't know 16 million dollars was missing. I doubt Ohtani is meeting fans without the translator.
Not a stupid question. It can, but it is much like in any language. Usually, there is a follow up to clarify. No natural language will avoid these potential problems. It's just the languages have been practiced enough that people are generally aware how to prevent the miscommunications from happening.
Any RomCom will likely have a few miscommunications caused by something not far off from this.
But to anyone who hasn't tried Japanese or a language like it (not sure if there is another language that can drop subjects), but it's actually rather surprising how well it works coming from a language where it is really difficult to have this happen.
An Angels beatwriter was the one who kept pushing that narrative into the mainstream despite Japanese fluent people correcting his interpretation. I’m confident the mistranslation was pushed for more clicks
Try to make things right? I read an article that said an independent appraiser thought the ball to be worth at least $100k. When Ohtani met this fan did he bring her a check for a $100k ?
In the same story I read the Dodgers are selling an autographed *foul* ball hit by Ohtani for ~$15k at Dodger stadium. Did Ohtani bring her a check from the Dodgers for $15k. Ohtani got a $700m contract and the Dodgers are a multi billion dollar franchise and they tricked this fan into giving them a ba worth $100k for some signed hats and a meet and greet. Shameful that they would treat their fans like that.
Dodgers security refused to authenticate the ball, the easiest way to handle this is to just authenticate the ball and let them bring it to the open market.
Please be kind to us olds that grew up with AOL/AIM screen names sometimes it's a hard habit to break... Also if you guys could stop trying to abbreviate everything that'd be great, we already suffered through trying to decipher T9 texts.
You should not be down voted. The Dodgers fumbled this shit hard. I do not blame Ohtani, full on blame the Dodgers for essentially bullying her into giving up the ball
Ya I don’t blame him either for it. It could have happened at any stadium but happened to happen there. Not sure if she’s happy with how things turned out, hell they may have had her sign an NDA. Definitely scummy.
The fact that this wasn’t the thing that happened immediately after the game and that we’re still hearing about it proves you right.
Look, I don’t even think Ohtani’s first home run ball as a Dodger is really even that important of a ball. It’s not a milestone. It’s arbitrary. So if this is what happened immediately after the game and everyone walked away happy, I’m fine with it. But they didn’t do that, they bullied her in to giving the ball back for not that much, and they never had Ohtani meet with her and thank her.
I don’t know the whole picture of what happened. I know the dodgers fucked up badly, but didn’t Will, Shohei’s translator, mistranslate and said Shohei met the fan after she caught the ball but actually he didn’t, causing the confusion in the first place?
The original statement from Ohtani was more along the line of: "There was communication with the fan (from the team)", but it was translated as "I spoke with the fan" because language is hard
The original statement was a little more tricky. Along the lines of "the team talked to the fan for me" because japanese has I implied. There was an apparent gap when he was speaking so many people added a comma which would mean he talked to the fan. The original written japanese I saw made me think he talked to the fan.

The subject of the sentence isn't required in Japanese. Ohtani didn't state one, so the translator inferred (incorrectly) that Ohtani was speaking in first person.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen someone’s first homer with a new team be so dramatized. Hell even the title says “first homer” and not “first dodger homer.”
For god’s sake he’s playing in the same city! (kinda)
Hell even the official MLB Reddit account was trying to pretend it was his first home run. They're fucking thrilled he's with the Dodgers and really hoping people forget about his Angels tenure.
To be fair. as a fellow angels fan (disgruntled), I’d love to forget the last 12-3 years of terrible Angels baseball and the tragic wasting of Mike trouts entire and the middle of ohtanis careers… like how can you be so bad for so long with 2x superstar players?
It’s even not his first HR in a Dodger uniform though, that was in Spring Training. “First Regular Season HR in a Dodger Uniform”
God what if he dinged one out in Korea…that’s a lot of won
Why not? The players are people to. Seems kinda heartless to take that stance. Plus in most cases I’d rather have a cool memory meeting a player than money. Maybe i’m weird like that but that money probably wouldn’t make me more happy than a player getting a trophy ball back.
Not that this is really a warranted milestone ball tbh
Probably around 4-5k if they’re just signed. If they’re game-used, however, that number will jump to 70-80k or more.
The dude has the Midas touch. Anything Ohtani touches during a game absolutely skyrockets in value. For instance, a Ohtani game used rosin bag a couple months ago went for almost $1,500 on the MLB auction site.
Yeah this story became huge in baseball circles. It’s not just some bat the clubhouse guy donated after BP to the American Heart Association and the Dodgers wrote off on their taxes. And the authentication of a photo, with Ohtani, with the bat, with it signed. So many layers here to add value.
If I’m not a fan of the team I’m taking it to auction all day. As a fan I’d take all the signed stuff and the fan experience though. It may not equal the money in the long run but it’s still valuable stuff and the memory with your family is worth more than anything.
Seriously, why was this fucking picture so fucking hard MLB and Dodgers? The ball is worth more than what these folks make in a year. A group pic is literally the least they could have done immediately.
Ohtani is cleared of any wrongdoing AND Ohtani made it up to the fan? /r/baseball won't like this. On a serious note that's awesome, I heard she met the entire team.
Yes, it’s been confirmed Ohtani is a moron with his finances and has a PR team that realized on top of everything else stiffing fans for a ball wasn’t a great look
Or he was a victim of grand theft by somebody he considered family and he found out that Dodger stadium security were being assholes and decided to make it right.
Why don’t the Dodgers just give her the bat he used for his first home run if they are so set on keeping the ball? That would at least somewhat make up for this whole debacle and it would be better than auctioning it off to some dipshit rich collector.
these people have so much fuckin money and they short the fan with the ball? that's sick. when mark mcguire went over sixty some schmuck got the ball and gave it to him, about fifteen minutes before the team gave mcguire a new corvette. did mcg give the fan anything? not that anyone noticed. people used to think jack benny was a tightwad, but that was just an act for the radio show. these people have greed to the gills.
So after everyone made a big deal about it, only then did the dodgers decide to make it right when they realized they couldn't sweep it under the rug lol
That's nice. Still think established superstars should be paying market value for balls. Especially when the milestone isn't a record or particularly significant achievement.
A truly deplorable human being, screaming and ranting to satisfy his personal greed.
The American society where such business is allowed to flourish is also deplorable.
These people truly got robbed by the Dodgers. Seemed scummy. That ball is probably worth a few 10s of thousands and they gave them a signed bat. Come on.
$16 mil for the ball because why not he won’t notice

Ippei laughing! Translation hard!!!
(He didn't meet her the day he hit it because he was preoccupied with being interviewed by the Feds on that day.)
Smh scum bag
Is that true?
Yes
Good on him to try and make things right. Fuck the Dodgers and the MLB for intimidating fans over milestone balls.
They intimidated her so Ohtani could get the ball.
Why not just baton her a few times in the back of the knee to expedite the process?
What's Tonya Harding up to these days?
Because he doesn’t have enough in his life
You’re right. Why do you think he wanted the ball that Dodger security intimidated a couple to get it?
Try to make things right? I read an article that said an independent appraiser thought the ball to be worth at least $100k. When Ohtani met this fan did he bring her a check for a $100k ? didnt know it was shohei’s bday
Ohtani married the wrong girl, clearly.
Ohtani would’ve not let her go with security alone
Not really, the dodgers fucked her. It’s definitely better than nothing but no where near as good as it could have been.
You should not be down voted. The Dodgers fumbled this shit hard. I do not blame Ohtani, full on blame the Dodgers for essentially bullying her into giving up the ball

Yes ohtani never explicitly said he met with the fan but Will Ireton mistranslated it
Ippei would never do something like that to him.
Hell of a guy. Whatever happened to him anyway? Don't see him around much any more
He probably made a ton of money sports betting and retired
Yeah, he would have gotten a bunch of merch to trade with her and then took a few off the top to get some quick cash for his bookie.
Ippei would ask Ohtani to sign the ball for the fan, tell the fan Ohtani kept the ball, then sell the ball for his own gain.
“Yes Shohei, all she’s asking for is a messily 20 mil and some signed merch” “Shohei agrees to your request for some signed merch”
Ah so more translator stuff
Oh those translators!

It's actually AI
Cardboard cutout
If you ever catch a milestone ball that might be worth something please don't give it back, even donating the money is a better idea.
Donate that shit to the Human Fund
Hey...I'm a human...
Money for People.
Comrade
The problem is MLB won’t authenticate it for you if you don’t give it back, so it’s worthless the minute you leave the ballpark.
You should be able to sue for that and its not true in every case anyways.
Just call Sotheby’s from your seat and have them run Jeeves to the stadium.
Why not? The players are people to. Seems kinda heartless to take that stance. Plus in most cases I’d rather have a cool memory meeting a player than money. Maybe i’m weird like that but that money probably wouldn’t make me more happy than a player getting a trophy ball back. Not that this is really a warranted milestone ball tbh
so is that bat + ball worth 100k?

This merchandise is a part of baseball history now. Maybe even more significant than a first home run ball on a new team.
Yeah this story became huge in baseball circles. It’s not just some bat the clubhouse guy donated after BP to the American Heart Association and the Dodgers wrote off on their taxes. And the authentication of a photo, with Ohtani, with the bat, with it signed. So many layers here to add value.
How much would the bat be worth if he shoved it up his ass?
We could probably use his poo to clone Ohtani and create a Jurassic Ohtani movie franchise in the distant future. So easily a billion dollars.
Away from the game, what is her right shoulder worth?
It could be….
Ippei arrested, Sugartitts happy. Ohtani can finally rest
This is Angels erasure! This is not Ohtani's first home run!
He had the over at two weeks
I bet she is happy
That's crazy it took him 6 years to finally meet the person who caught the first home run he hit back in 2018.
Got another signed bat and ball
How much could she have potentially sold the ball for ?
I’ve read 69-100k
If I’m not a fan of the team I’m taking it to auction all day. As a fan I’d take all the signed stuff and the fan experience though. It may not equal the money in the long run but it’s still valuable stuff and the memory with your family is worth more than anything.

I always forget how massive Ohtani is
That's what she said.
Blink twice if you are under duress!
This story was stupid from the start.
This picture brought to you by draft kings.
I wonder if he knew that that was the ball that he hit his first home run with.
His first MLB homer was 6 years ago.
This fan took a gamble, but it looks like it paid off
I’m glad they were able to make amends.
most dodger loooookin fans ever

Ngl she kinda cute
They don't call her sugartitts for nothin. (it's her twitter handle)
Yeah, she’s really pretty.
Man has 16 mil stolen from him and he's chill af.
That’s a sick looking bat
Why don’t the Dodgers just give her the bat he used for his first home run if they are so set on keeping the ball? That would at least somewhat make up for this whole debacle and it would be better than auctioning it off to some dipshit rich collector.
It’s giving big “trying to avoid more bad PR” vibes
awesome! But she still got fucked over by her team. 10k, season tickets and a signed ball, jersey and hat. Boom! Fair trade. Tell me I’m wrong
Par for the course when you're a Dodgers fan.
I guess that was better than having a ball worth $100k
these people have so much fuckin money and they short the fan with the ball? that's sick. when mark mcguire went over sixty some schmuck got the ball and gave it to him, about fifteen minutes before the team gave mcguire a new corvette. did mcg give the fan anything? not that anyone noticed. people used to think jack benny was a tightwad, but that was just an act for the radio show. these people have greed to the gills.
Why does it look like an AI picture?
His extortion attempt was successful!!!
I don't ever say this, but good job Dodgers.
You can’t fool me I know what the dodgers did to these people.
Did she bring the stuff back to dodger stadium that he initially signed? Or this new
That's it. Big smile. Everybody's happy
His first homer? Wow! That must’ve been back in 2018. Why are they meeting up now?

So glad this drama is over and everyone can move on. I hope we don't have to hear about her again.
So after everyone made a big deal about it, only then did the dodgers decide to make it right when they realized they couldn't sweep it under the rug lol
Sounds perfectly on brand for LA.
I would have demanded $2.2 mil for that ball
I would have just asked for access to all of his bank accounts, seems like that's the fastest way to get the money.
Lmao the backtracking is hilarious
This man’s PR tour went into overdrive today.
Look at him touching her shoulder… lucky bitch
Lame
Dude looks like JD Pardo.

Wait where’s his translator?
He had to use the phone to make a withdrawal
Nah. That looks photoshopped.
