I'm not sure. I wonder if they had the Orioles in Veep just as a reference to Elaine. IIRC, JLD grew up in or around DC, and the Senators left in the early '70s, so the O's would have been the local team after that when she was growing up.
I don't know if anyone officially confirmed or denied it, but he's basically John Rocker. His little interviews during his fall from grace were very akin to the interview that got Rocker suspended for half a season.
He's kinda an amalgamation of lots of guys, but Rocker appears to be the main inspiration. They definitely also riff on Kenny Rogers shoving that reporter in the opening montage with the Rocker-esque quotes. The names are clearly similar and Rogers also hung on for a long time at the end of his career like KP is trying to do, so it's more than just the parody of the one famous thing. I think there are bits and pieces of several fiery pitchers from the 80s/90s mixed in, but Rocker and Rogers are the two most obvious to me.
The Simpsons have mentioned the [The Devil Rays](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6tN4QV9YgcI) a couple of [times](https://getyarn.io/yarn-clip/d53a2bbc-c175-48be-8c56-3c0041f3ef3e)
> There was also the mariners angels game in naked gun
Saw that when it came out at a theater outside Seattle, and the M's and Angels being in the playoffs elicited the biggest laugh out of the audience
I just started showing my kid old Bill Nye episodes on YouTube, and she freaked out when he showed up in one scene wearing the S hat. "Look papa Mariners!"
Dear Chase,
I feel like I can call you Chase because you and me are so alike. I'd like to meet you one day, it would be great to have a catch.
I know I can't throw as fast as you but I think you'd be impressed with my speed. I love your hair, you run fast.
Did you have a good relationship with your father? Me neither. These are all things we can talk about and more.
I know you have not been getting my letters because I know you would write back if you did.
I hope you write back this time, and we can become good friends.
I am sure our relationship would be a real homerun!
[Definitely Stanley Yelnats catching a bad charge for stealing Clyde “Sweetfeet” Livingston’s cleats.](https://disney.fandom.com/wiki/Clyde_Livingston)
I will die on the hill that Holes is one of the greatest kids movies of all time
It respects your intelligence without spoon-feeding you everything. Like, when Stanley remembers the hole that he found the KB bullet in because of the rock that looks like a human face, he doesn't ever explain to anyone like "Oh hey Zero, I remember the hole, it has this special rock next to it." He just remembers, the audience remembers, and when he returns to it there's a moment where you get to feel a tiny little bit smart for noticing the detail from earlier.
The story is also super compelling, especially the story between Sam and Kate, and the way it weaves together at the end is really awesome.
It's also so quotable:
*"WELL THAT'S TOO DAMN BAD!"*
*"The duck may swim on the lake, but my daddy owwwwwns the lake."*
Holes fucking rules. I'll take Holes over more than half of the Pixar catalogue any day of the week.
TIL that he played a baseball player in the movie. my 8 year old mind knew who Rick Fox was as a basketball player, but never did it occur to me that he is portraying a baseball player in the movie.
I remember him being stoked to get a Cal Ripken Jr card from his grandma.
Then, I think, he asked how she got it, and she said she shot a man in Reno just to watch him die.
Bill Murray wears a Saint Paul Saints hat in Space Jam, but I'm quite certain they weren't a Twins affiliate at the time.
He also is a co-owner of the team.
EDIT: they sold the team in 2023.
I always assumed it was because the Twins won the WS the year the movie came out, but it was apparently filmed from October 1990 to March of '91, when the Twins had just finished in last place.
[Post in the Twins sub from 11 years ago](https://old.reddit.com/r/minnesotatwins/comments/1d32hb/watched_terminator_2_noticed_miles_dysons_son_was/c9mynbi/) suggests that it's a reference to Schwarzenegger's movie Twins, best explication I can think of.
On Twitter I saw a post that the Twins had Jeff "The Terminator" Reardon on the '87 World Series team so it could be a reference to that.
There was also a Mary Kate & Ashley music video my sister used to watch when we were kids where they sang about being twins in Twins uniforms. I want to say Kirby Puckett made a cameo but I don't remember for sure.
There is also that scene where daniels goes in to
The kitchen and hangs out with the drivers at a mansion fundraiser event, and donnell rawling’s character virtually incriminates himself bragging about how he would rob the place while they all sit around watching the yankees-O’s game. Speaking of JLD, the episode of Veep where she meets the Orioles is great. Paraphrasing-
JLD- "who is this guy?"
Assistant- "John Means, he's the starting pitcher."
JLD- "and the guy next to him?"
Assistant- "Kyle Gibson, he's a starting pitcher."
JLD- "I thought the other guys was the starting pitcher?"
Assistant- "they both are"
JLD- "they can't *both* be the starting pitcher. I don't think you actually know what you're talking about, get it together, they can't all be the starting pitcher...OK, now who is the older guy over there?"
Assistant-"...Jim Palmer"
It was Jonah which makes it even better. The one time he was useful but of course she was already predisposed to thinking everything out of his mouth is bullshit.
Maybe a little cheating but the show Detroiters has a lot of love for all Detroit sports but especially the Tigers.
My favorite is Tim Robinson's character's dad getting out of a mental institution after some years and asks about visiting "Old Tiger Stadium," to which he responds: "they closed Tiger Stadium before you went nuts. Plus, you called it *Old* Tiger Stadium."
In the DVD commentary Fincher says it shut production down for *four days* although the seriousness of that is in question
>“That was the only fight David and I had,” Mr. Affleck said, “and it was a legitimate fight.”
>“I said, ‘David, I love you, I would do anything for you,’” Mr. Affleck recalled. “‘But I will not wear a Yankees hat. I just can’t. I can’t wear it because it’s going to become a thing, David. I will never hear the end of it. I can’t do it.’ And I couldn’t put it on my head.”
1. I consider myself a rational adult and know deep down there are way more important things in life than sports.
2. If I was an actor and was handed another team's cap to wear for my movie-
27 of those hats: "No problem! It's just a movie!"
Cardinals or White Sox hat: "Go fuck yourself. I'll shut this bitch down for as long as it takes."
I would wear a Dodgers cap only if I was playing some kind of horrific low down disgusting bastard with zero redeeming qualities, you know, to maintain believability.
Not TV but “Ode to the Mets” by The Strokes.
“The Strokes frontman Julian Casablancas, a lifelong fan of the Mets, wrote the 2020 song "Ode to the Mets" while waiting for the 7 train at Mets-Willets Point station immediately following the game(2016 WC loss to the Giants); The song is the closing track on The Strokes' 2020 album The New Abnormal. Fabrizio Moretti, the band's drummer, has stated that both the Mets and the song evoke “something that you set your heart to and that you love unconditionally but that continues to disappoint you.””
Mets gotta be one of the most mentioned sports teams in TV/movies. I guess because NYC is very dominant in media, and being a Mets fan is sadly a lot funnier than being a Yankees fan
For my team, probably John Kruk having a cameo on Aqua Teen Hunger Force, where he casually takes off his skin.
But in general, it has to be Spidey being a Mets fan. On top of all the other suffering Peter Parker experiences, he has to root for the Mets
Parks and Rec also predicted the Cubs winning in 2016.
I'll also add Happy Endings, as the characters are always wearing Cubs with other decor in the background. It's also an amazing show.
The *Curb* episode at Dodger Stadium that got an innocent man out of a murder charge.

If you have never seen the documentary, I implore you to see it. It is what every documentary should be. It told its story in tight writing, made it gripping and enjoyable, and told its tale in something like an hour.
It's the antithesis to these goddamned six-part Netflix/Max/You Name It documentaries with shots of the countryside, repeated points, and filler. Those goddamned Nexium and Natalia Grace and on and on and on could take a page from this documentary's book.
I’ve got a David Simon bouillabaisse for y’all:
- Detectives Bunk and McNulty taking in a game at Camden Yards, only for Bunk’s phone to ring, ruining his day
- Herc lamenting the poor fate of Gus Triandos, and being willing to help Gus out in his own way
- Scott Templeton completely invented a kid who supposedly missed out on Opening Day
- Tommy Carcetti really *should* be making some fundraising calls, but instead he’s lamenting the O’s pitching woes
- A Yankee Fan is murdered on Pratt St. Munch openly wonders if that’s even a crime in Baltimore
It's gotta be Back to the Future 2 missing on the Cubs title run by a single year, with an added bonus of predicting a Miami team 4 years before the Marlins existed.
The Breakfast Club. Vernon has a Sox helmet in his office and the janitor wears a Sox jersey under his uniform. John Hughes is a Sox fan and wanted the scene in Ferris Bueller to take place at Comiskey instead of Wrigley, but scheduling didn't work out or something.
This is a random thing to remember but in 12 Angry Men one of the jurors says something like I can’t sit here all day I have baseball tickets. “Yanks and Cleveland” he says. Idk why I always remember that
Yeah he brings it up a few times and eventually gets scolded by Henry Fonda for caring more about a baseball game than making sure they aren't sending an innocent man to the electric chair
In Derry Girls, one the of Protestant lads has a Rockies hat. The time depicted in the show was there inaugural season. Apparently Rockies gear was popular in Europe for a short time.
I’m pretty sure Todd Helton shows up in southpark same with coors field. Unless the Todd Helton thing is a dream. But I do know for sure coors is in an episode

There was an episode of Lost where Ben was trying to convince Jack that they had actual connections to civilization and used the example of the Red Sox winning the World Series to try and prove it. Jack didn’t believe him at all because the Red Sox were well known for their curse, and then he was shown a clip of them winning the ‘04 World Series.
That family guy cutaway where Stewie say "this is a bigger leg down than being a Mets fan" *cut to Stewie at a Mets game* the announcer goes "it's the first pitch of the season for the Mets aaaannnndd the seasons over" as much as I hate it, I love it even more.
Kim Wexler wears a Royals shirt sometimes when she's at home in Better Call Saul.
I liked to imagine that was because the Royals were good around the time they were filming and someone was a fan but it's probably just because her character grew up in Nebraska.
Early ran onto Turner Field and beat up the Braves first base coach for looking at him crossways in the “Terminus Trouble” episode of Squidbillies, which is my favorite episode.
Also name dropped in a couple episodes of The Simpsons. Once as an argument by Bart in favor of stealing cable, and then in a later episode the news showed a picture of a Braves player and asked “Did a Jones that’s Chipper kill Flipper?”
Phillies vs Dodgers is on the radio when Cap wakes up in The First Avenger in what is a pretty significant detail because he realizes that he is no longer in 1944 and the hospital is a setup as he was at the actual game in 1941.
Also, various references & players in The Office
They went into huge detail about Game 6 talking about how incredible it was, just for the end of the story being that he had tickets, but didn't go because he "had to see about a girl"
How do ya like them apples?
A lot of people will immediately think of _IASIP_ (rightfully so) but how bout _Boy Meets World_? All the Philly teams were featured pretty prominently in that show, but especially the Phillies.
![gif](giphy|P4sjB6SI2fErK|downsized)
There’s also episode with Elaine at the Orioles game
Yeah, I was gonna say that Elaine with the O's hat at Yankee Stadium might be our best appearance.
Is she an actual O’s fan? Veep also has a few episodes with the O’s even though the Nationals were very much a team at that point.
Julia Louis-Dreyfus isn't an Orioles fan but Elaine Benes backstory is she's originally from Maryland, so Elaine Benes is an O's fan.
I'm not sure. I wonder if they had the Orioles in Veep just as a reference to Elaine. IIRC, JLD grew up in or around DC, and the Senators left in the early '70s, so the O's would have been the local team after that when she was growing up.
George explaining Launch Angle Sweet-Spot % to the Yankees
George was ahead of the curve. Even the cotton uniforms were a good idea, wasn't his fault the Yankees didn't get preshrunk
I would happily take George Costanza over Rowdy Tellez
What about Jay Buhner
People kept saying "Ken Phelps, Ken Phelps!"
HOW THE HELL COULD YOU GIVE HIDECKI IRABU 20 MILLION DOLLARS!?!
THE KID HAD A ROCKET FOR AN ARM!
Jerry? It’s Frank Costanza. Steinbrenner’s here, George is dead, call me back!
What the hell did you trade Jay Buhner for??

I think Jody Hill actually said he’s an amalgamation of multiple athletes and specifically named Rocker as an influence.
He's kinda an amalgamation of lots of guys, but Rocker appears to be the main inspiration. They definitely also riff on Kenny Rogers shoving that reporter in the opening montage with the Rocker-esque quotes. The Rays were in the World Series when Mac delivered his letter to Chase Utley. Does that count?
If that counts, it also counts when the gang goes to the stadium and gets locked in the ‘oliday Inn
they were also the first MLB team to give Easbound and Down permission to use their logo
The Simpsons have mentioned the [The Devil Rays](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6tN4QV9YgcI) a couple of [times](https://getyarn.io/yarn-clip/d53a2bbc-c175-48be-8c56-3c0041f3ef3e)

what about the episode of curb your enthusiam thwt helped a man beat a murder case
Easily one of my favorite episodes of Curb. [His strategy to get out of jury duty is so outrageous.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=94zkBGm1IoU)
Zack Morris lying about being Jewish to skip school for a day game then being caught and it turning into an elaborate web of blackmail.
The cut to him swinging on the beach wearing his own jersey absolutely killed me
I love the fact that not only is he practicing his swing, he’s wearing his uniform at the beach

There's also some Cleveland references in 30 Rock. https://youtu.be/yBaCG-HcEBU?si=FITm4QCJvJ3TNhH_
It was either the Drew Carey Show or Ted from How I met Your Mother mentioning the various Cleveland teams.
Ted mentioning Vinnie Pestano always cracks me up “I’ve seen Barney throw. He’s no Vinnie Pestano — am I right?”
Fuck I love that song so much

Endgame. Overhead shot of Citi Field and they mention the Mets in a therapy scene. The Russo Brothers are huge Mets fans.

Has a Piazza pennant in his room in the MCU ones, I believe.

If I recall there was a comic where he switched alliances with the Mets because the Dodgers moved away.
Yep. In No Way Home, MJ says she thinks “the Mets are going all the way this year”. Someone wanna tell her?

It's the antithesis to these goddamned six-part Netflix/Max/You Name It documentaries with shots of the countryside, repeated points, and filler. Those goddamned Nexium and Natalia Grace and on and on and on could take a page from this documentary's book.
I’ve got a David Simon bouillabaisse for y’all: - Detectives Bunk and McNulty taking in a game at Camden Yards, only for Bunk’s phone to ring, ruining his day - Herc lamenting the poor fate of Gus Triandos, and being willing to help Gus out in his own way - Scott Templeton completely invented a kid who supposedly missed out on Opening Day - Tommy Carcetti really *should* be making some fundraising calls, but instead he’s lamenting the O’s pitching woes - A Yankee Fan is murdered on Pratt St. Munch openly wonders if that’s even a crime in Baltimore
There's the episode of curb where Larry picks up a hooker so he can take the HOV lane to Dodger Stadium.
True story: that episode ended helping acquit a man who was wrongfully convicted of murder https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Long_Shot_(2017_film)
This was a disturbing watch in how wank the US prison system is. There was never enough evidence to put the guy away in the first place.
I do remember hearing about this but you could have told me it was made up and I would have believed that.
The episode of Curb with Bill Buckner is an all time classic. “Don’t let the door go between your legs on the way out Buckner!”
karate kid part 1 where the dude wears a w senator's hat
Why would a dying orphan be at a padres game?!
Cuz I’m Numba One ⚾️
They didn't want to be alone in their suffering.
Does Eazy-E count in Straight Outta Compton?
The cubs play day games, the sox rarely did. Playing hooky and going to wrigley was a thing, especially for north suburbs kids.
Citizens Bank Park was destroyed in Shazam 2.
Dodger Stadium in Transformers Oracle in San Andreas Wrigley in Greenland Fenway in Godzilla
The Marlins showed up in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure Part 6. They were even shown playing in their old ballpark
Well that definitely would win a "most unexpected" award
And Emporio original outfit is basically a Cubs uniform but had to be changed for copyright
Well shit, I’m not sure Edit: OKAY I GET IT - SOUTHPARK
In Derry Girls, one the of Protestant lads has a Rockies hat. The time depicted in the show was there inaugural season. Apparently Rockies gear was popular in Europe for a short time.
That show blew me away. I never expected it to be as perfect as it is. I have an uncle Colm in my life, lol.
It's probably the 2007 Red Sox World Series DVD. You can see the Rockies in the background a bunch of times.
Dude - you just ruined my day. Edit: take my stupid upvote

I’m pretty sure Todd Helton shows up in southpark same with coors field. Unless the Todd Helton thing is a dream. But I do know for sure coors is in an episode
When the kids are trying to lose in little league and Randy fights the Batdad that's at the Rockies Stadium.

[Court scene from Big Daddy](https://youtu.be/Qr132GqqhMk?feature=shared)
in the Big Daddy universe, if the White Sox would've beaten the Blue Jays in the 93 ALCS then Julian would have never been born
While the Wrigley Field scene of *Ferris Bueller's Day Off* doesn't qualify as background, the scene where the principal goes to a pizza place and the Cubs game is on at the counter does qualify. [https://youtu.be/TeKtnvh5\_6k?si=oEK4vibaVge6u9Yb&t=100](https://youtu.be/TeKtnvh5_6k?si=oEK4vibaVge6u9Yb&t=100) Principal: What's the score? \[no score bug back then\] Pizza maker: nothin'-nothin' Principal, not listening: Who's winning? Pizza maker, confused, then sarcastic: the Bears.

[Reggie Jackson playing himself](https://youtu.be/cq2CfdYVgwg?si=ETCbG9CZZUOzq2YW) attempting to assassinate Queen Elizabeth in Naked Gun has to be up there. The rest of the baseball stuff in the movie is hilarious too
There was an episode of Lost where Ben was trying to convince Jack that they had actual connections to civilization and used the example of the Red Sox winning the World Series to try and prove it.
"Fry, you can't stay here. Sure, they have the Braves, but it's a third-rate symphony!" - Doctor Zoidberg
Kim Wexler wears a Royals shirt sometimes when she's at home in Better Call Saul. I liked to imagine that was because the Royals were good around the time they were filming and someone was a fan but it's probably just because her character grew up in Nebraska.
Clark Kent also wears a Royals shirt in the Man of Steel movie.
Always interesting which teams people in Iowa and Nebraska choose to support.
Y'all are getting media appearances?
How I Met Your Mother. Marshall says inviting an ex to your wedding is like inviting the Mariners to the World Series, it's just awkward for everyone.

I can only think of the brewers player that’s the main character in that horror movie Night Swim
Phillies vs Dodgers is on the radio when Cap wakes up in The First Avenger in what is a pretty significant detail because he realizes that he is no longer in 1944 and the hospital is a setup as he was at the actual game in 1941. Also, various references & players in The Office
Bing Crosby wearing St. Louis Browns gear in “Going My Way” which won the Oscar that year (probably on the strength of his costume choices).
When Elwood tricked the Illinois Nazis into thinking his address was 1060 W Addison St, Chicago, IL.
They went into huge detail about Game 6 talking about how incredible it was, just for the end of the story being that he had tickets, but didn't go because he "had to see about a girl" How do ya like them apples?
A lot of people will immediately think of _IASIP_ (rightfully so) but how bout _Boy Meets World_? All the Philly teams were featured pretty prominently in that show, but especially the Phillies.
For Brewers- Hardy, Hall, Capuano, and Suppan were in an episode of young and the restless in 07. Yelich was on magnum PI reboot
