I think what you mean to say is: Ben is capable of writing better songs off the top of his head than weezer is willing to spend time writing, recording and releasing. Weezer is the definition of a diminishing returns rock band. With every new Weezer album, we stray further from God.
Disclaimer: I only liked Weezer when Matt Sharp was in the band (records 1+2) and I firmly believe Ben can do no wrong.
I mean, they both write pop melodies. They’re going to sound similar.

I kind of noticed that, but it was only about half the album that was like that imo
That's why I liked it tbh. I liked that it sounded like a mix of Ben Folds and Sufjan Stevens with Weezer singing overtop
