I don't think she would have blocked Beyonce per se. I think this thinking is motivated by people who dont have much respect for Beyonce's music. However, I don't think anyone should be dismissive of individual artists' effect on, and ability to shape the musical landscape and what is "in" or "it" at the time, which could have affected what kind of talent people might appreciate. Britney Spears for instance defined what was pop (or female pop for a while) hence there were a slew of artists who sounded like her or started off sounding like her. I don't think it's out of the question that Aaliyah was on a pathway to possible mega stardom. She was on constant MTV rotation and had expanded into Hollywood very early (something Bey hasn't really done succesfully, and even black actresses in general struggled to do), doing Romeo Must Die with Jet Li, and then Queen of the Damned. She was playing lead roles, and on her way. I think pitting her against Beyonce is unnecessary, but so is minimizing her stardom. Remember also the Timbaland effect of the 2000s which also was one of the defining sounds of the decade. Anyway I don't think she would have held Beyonce back because of Beyonces sheer talent, beyond singing, as a performer. Aaliyah was not as talented but she was talented enough, and definitely magnetized people. Her lane was that was of Ciara's but I think she would have been significantly bigger than her.
