I think I missed the memo. What’s going on?

OFFRIMITS

Yeah I’m so confused what’s everyone going on about?

hayzooos1

If you use the stock Reddit app on mobile, nothing will change for you. However, MANY people use 3rd party apps to use Reddit, like Reddit Is Fun, Apollo, among others. Those third party apps usually put in some changes a lot of people love because the native app sucks. Reddit is supposedly no longer going to allow 3rd party apps to get it's content. It's Reddit app or nothing and that'll drive away a substantial part of the user base.

this_place_stinks

I know I’m getting old because I use the Reddit app and have no issues with it. What am I missing out on?

hayzooos1

I'm with you. I don't know and at this point I'm too afraid to ask

Eode11

Honestly just a lot more streamlined, cleaner experience. I use Reddit is Fun and I don't even know if/who has been following me. I don't have to deal with any chat function, no video-based ads, and can see a lot more content on my screen at once. You don't realize how much better it can be until you've experienced it.

SSGSS_Vegeta

Basically the apps are ad blockers then it sounds like. Makes sense why they're banning them but that def sucks.

fdar

It's not just that, the layout is a lot more efficient in 3rd party apps, the official one wastes a lot of space. And I disagree that banning them makes sense. Of course if Reddit is losing revenue it makes sense that they'd want to recapture that. And technically they're not banning them, they're just charging ridiculously high prices (the developers of one of the top apps estimate [upwards of 20x what Reddit gets in revenue from each user](https://www.reddit.com/r/apolloapp/comments/13ws4w3/had_a_call_with_reddit_to_discuss_pricing_bad/)). If it was just about the revenue they could charge something more in line with the revenue they're losing, and then completely free, ad-free apps would still be in trouble but apps that either do show ads or charge for a subscription could give Reddit a cut and be fine. Moreover, even if 3rd party apps were willing to pay, Reddit is degrading the service in the API, in particular blocking all NSWF content, which doesn't seem related to revenue losses.

[deleted]

I enjoy the chat function and I connect with people who follow me (besides OF bots) for business. I really don’t think any of the other apps are better, I like the Reddit mobile app, and I’ve been a Redditor for a decade on various usernames

btinit

I have tried 3rd party reddit apps and hated them all.

CptClownfish1

True! I missed the memo that said the app sucks!

DayKingaby

A lot of moderators use the special apps for moderation support - so banking those apps makes moderation harder. Making moderation harder makes the experience worse for everyone.

Mathguy_314159

Wait I didn’t even know that, what kinds of features am I missing out on?

hayzooos1

It's usually dumb things in the app you don't realize until you use something else! I don't use a 3rd party app so I can't say, but the real reason is ads

MAELATEACH86

The native app used to suck. It’s 1000x better than it used to be.

hayzooos1

Agreed, it's what I use

Rlemalin

Pretty often when I "come back" to the app and press a post, it brings me to the first post of the feed after I refresh the feed... kinda weird.

morningafterpizza

Not that it matters, but you should try Reddit is Fun or Apollo, WAY better. And I use Old Reddit + RES on my PC.

pseudonominom

> nothing will change for you I think you’d be surprised how much worse this place is going to get once they kill off all the things they can’t control.

hayzooos1

Oh, I completely agree but people asking about what this is all about and using the stock mobile app probably aren't going to realize the nuance changes to begin with. I don't think Reddit is going to make any significant changes right away as that would be an incredibly stupid thing to do

AngryT-Rex

ruthless abounding racial safe label reply history disarm obtainable foolish *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*

ronald_mcdonald_4prz

Something about the API changing? Do people not use the app…?

RonaldoNazario

There are a bunch of third party apps less shitty than reddits own. I go between those and their own app but Reddit seems to be changing the terms of the access to the site for those apps to be very expensive. Presumably mainly to serve ads.

Ashworth5433

Reddit is going to start charging Apollo app to use their API this will cost Apollo millions of dollars a year Apollo already said they'll have to shut the app down Reddit is going to charge all 3rd party apps to use their API, eventually They'll all shut down Resulting in the only app being the official Reddit app Which is an absolute shit app They're doing this to get prepared for when reddit goes public, to appease shareholders Reddit community is fighting back and planning a blackout day Honestly, reddit isn't good like it was 10 years ago. I say let it crash and burn

ronald_mcdonald_4prz

That’s interesting. I’ve been using only the Reddit app for the last few years and never once had an issue with it.

JBaecker

If all you’re going to do is scroll, Reddit’s app is fine. As soon as you add in doing literally anything else, there’s a better 3rd party app out there. Let’s focus on the important stuff, vision-impaired users use tools that access the API and then text-to-speech apps to “hear” their subs and interact. Reddit doesn’t do that for them directly, but the API allows it (for now). So, ironically, visually-impaired people think Reddit is great because of the culture of the subs, but the app and site don’t do anything to help them. Those people are just a few of the many screwed by the API changes.

ronald_mcdonald_4prz

Yeah I just scroll, respond and add pictures.

FermentingSkeleton

The app I use is just called "Reddit" and it's on Google play store. That being said I've been considering deleting it off my phone anyway.

jhknbhjnbv

I use the app too but might just join all the people crying about the API stuff and say bye bye because...I spend way too much time on Reddit.

FermentingSkeleton

That's the real reason I want to delete it. I'm as scared to do it as I was to quit alcohol. I've done it so much over the past 10 years what else will I do when bored? I've had my reddit account since college

jhknbhjnbv

Yeah same. First year of uni for me(well, not the account but that's when I found it...14 years ago. Jesus fuck lol)..stumbleupon landed me on Reddit. I've got no idea but I'll guess I'll do what I did on the internet before Reddit, browse art sites/read dedicated forums that interest me and stop picking my phone up every 2 minutes and get back on my pc doing Zbrush/drawing.

purpleowl385

Heyyy shout out to stumbleupon. It brought me to reddit also and I miss it so much. One of my happiest memories of the old internet.

xX69WeedSnipePussyXx

Yeah I loved that. Seemed like in the later years it became a great way to collect computer viruses.

FermentingSkeleton

Yeah. My goal is to read more, engage my with my kids more (I'm not bad at this but more never hurts), and just feel like I'm doing more with my life.

mjgood91

So. Story time. I do things in the finance industry for my job. A lot of account management and trading kinds of work. I stumbled across a thread called "Wall Street Bets", and it was filled with some absolutely fantastic stuff with people who seemed to not be taking themselves too seriously. It was great. Anyway, the last time I deleted Reddit, I remember I had read a post two days earlier from some guy named Deep Value who thought GameStop was vulnerable to a short squeeze. I'd thought about it for a bit at the time, and then..... Completely forgot about it, as I'd deleted the app from my phone. The next time I thought about it was when I saw it making headlines several months later. Aaaaaaand the app has been on my phone again ever since, even though that sub really isn't the same anymore at all.

[deleted]

Old WSB was fuckin great before the GME saga

SandiegoJack

Got mass report banned for 3 days, and it was eary how much time I spend here. Had a moment of downtime? Went to open the app and was like loan”

mjolnir76

I’ve been thinking about that too. I’m doing a 10-day silent retreat in a couple of months. Quitting Reddit now might make that experience a little easier.

[deleted]

I delete the app and my account every few months. I go without, then eventually I come back looking for some info about shoes or something, and slowly it creeps back into my life. I'm getting pretty close to deleting it again though. It's oozing into all the little time-corners of my life, just like it always does.

aaronrules33

I don’t know but I’m in a similar position and as a strict Apollo user I’m concerned. Saying it out loud though, if Reddit is so badly optimized for its users that it requires third party fixes, maybe it doesn’t deserve to survive. All I know is I’m giving myself a taste of what it’ll be like going forward by removing my app for the blackout.

40_lb

Yeah, I'm right there with you. I'm a RIF user myself.

frostysbox

Ayo fellow packer fan

morningafterpizza

I paid for Apollo Lifetime, if it goes bye bye, I'm going to have to start bringing a book to work or something, and probably start catching up on my collection of unread book and a neglected guitar. If it all goes south, i'm sure old.reddit will go the sameway to push new reddit and the official app (which is hot dogshit btw).

pseudonominom

That’s my concern as well. Reddit on PC is hot garbage unless it’s old.reddit.

maddips

Your personal taste is not what "require" means

MetalAvenger

I don’t understand all the upset. I’ve only heard of other apps using the Reddit api now, I just use the Reddit app itself 🤷‍♂️

astromech_dj

The issue is that pretty much every bot and plug-in used by moderators and subreddits to manage users and content will stop working since they need API access. Moderation will grind to a halt, spam will basically be an open floodgate and users will leave due to the terrible experience. There are so many bots that just work in the background that most have no idea about.

40_lb

The same move will also dramatically undercut the mods ability to... Moderate. Many mods rely on bots that use the same API interfaces to automate and streamline this work. I anticipate that there will be a dramatic reduction in content quality if/when this change goes through.

Engibineer

I also only use the Reddit app, but walling stuff off is antisocial and antithetical to the Internet. I don't think the changes will break r/daddit, but it is disappointing news. It's a reminder for me that I should give self-hosting another go. It's kind of irresponsible for everyone to rely on the likes of Reddit and Twitter and whatnot when we can just do it ourselves almost for free. Edit: I actually started trying out [Lemmy](https://join-lemmy.org/) and it seems fine. However, I haven't found a similar Daddit community yet.

diatho

Buddy you’re missing out. It’s like going to Costco but never getting a hot dog. The other apps (I use Apollo on iOS and Sync on android) are 100x better than the official app.

VikingFrog

People keep mentioning they are better, but no one has really said why they are better.

diatho

Paid apps have no ads. The ui is customizable, there are shortcuts for comments.

VikingFrog

Thanks for explaining. I’ve been on Reddit for 11 years. And I guess now that I think about it did have a different app for a while. Can’t remember which one but then switched to the Reddit app. Never really had much of a problem with it but maybe I just didn’t know what I was missing. I was just curious because seemed like no one could explain the hardship and were just angry.

ChaosCleopatra

Part of the issue is that blind and/or deaf people have to use 3rd party apps to participate in Reddit. Without them a group of people who are already marginalized are being completely silenced. The native app just does not have the functionality needed.

TapedWater

What makes these other apps better than using the reddit app anyhow? I've used Reddit pretty much daily for a few years now and can't say I have any complaints.

matthra

A [fediverse](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fediverse) version of reddit? I'm sure there is one out there that is to reddit what Mastodon is to Twitter.

nefastable

[Lemmy](https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy) is a federated alternative to reddit, iirc.

FunkDaviau

Unless some other tool pops up, I’d assume discord.

40_lb

Is there a daddit discord?

spottie_ottie

I think Reddit is way too big to fail at this point. Digg was tiny compared to what Reddit is today. Reddit is probably 10-15x bigger and more popular than Digg ever was. And Digg totally and abruptly became a shithole. As a developer, I really don't see what the big deal is, Reddit was providing free API access allowing 3rd party apps to benefit from their content. All their asking is for those app developers to pay to provide reddit content. Am I misunderstanding things? Most users probably don't even access the content using 3rd party apps.

AustinYQM

Imgur charges about 160 dollars for 50 million requests. Reddit is charging 12,000 dollars for 50 million requests. Facebook's API is free, as was twitters before Elon. Reddit was built off the backs of third-party apps. The original reddit app was bad to the point of being offensive. The API changes will also impact many tools including popular ones used by moderators. Most the Magic the Gathering subreddits will lose their card fetcher bot due to the api limit and I am sure other subreddits have simular bots. Most importantly it signals a pretty big change in the direction of reddit. Reddit used to be open source and even gave ["Open Sorcerer" badges](https://www.redditstatic.com/awards2/open_sorcerer-40.png) to people who merged in changes. They used to encourage bots, third-party apps, and community modification. This move signals a end to that age, and era now passed.

40_lb

It's the rate they are charging. Something like 2 orderes of magnitude greater than imgur.

Tanthalason

20x. I think. Imgur is like 160 bucks per 50,000 calls. Reddit is going to charge 12,000 For perspective Elon has made Twitters charge 42,000 per 50,000 calls.

[deleted]

This is absolutely what they're banking on, and people are constantly asking "where do we go when...". when the reality is there is nowhere else. Reddit fills a unique spot on the internet that has no real competition, so unless someone spins something up, these temporary blackouts are completely pointless. Either go dark until they change their policy or don't bother, two days won't even make them blink. Personally, July 1st rolls around and I can't use Sync then I'm not using Reddit.

WanderingPickles

Spend more time in my shop, reading, walking.

cowvin

I dunno, I mostly use reddit on my PC. On my phone, I just use the default Reddit app. It's not great but it's usable. I'm not a fan of the policy change but it's not a big enough deal to me to instantly drop reddit.

splinereticulation68

There is a Discord IIRC? I miss individual forums (think PHPBB) a little bit, shame they're not popular anymore
