They can? We had one years ago (probably about 10yrs ago now) that was just legendary. First night he had the theater doing an “I’m on vacation dance” to the song “Happy” and throughout the week that dance became a thing onboard. He wanted anybody to do that dance anytime they saw him around the ship as that’s his sign we’re stress free, on vacation and having a great time. He’d join in on the dancing too. Haven’t seen anything like that or anyone like him again. He just brought so much more fun, energy, and enthusiasm than what I’ve seen from the cruise directors on our more recent cruises.

Fabulous-Doughnut-65

Clayton, maybe?

Mission-Actuator-641

Yup it was Clayton!

ghostRdr

What ship did Clayton end up on? We had him on the Fantasy in 2014 and he was great!

johngar67

Clayton is “no longer with the company.” He left in 2018.

Desperate-Revenue513

We had Clayton on our Norway Cruise, he has been our favorite ever since!

ButterscotchOk3531

Haha yes, Clayton doing The Carlton! He was awesome.

johngar67

Clayton was the assistant cruise director to Christiaan (aka Xiaan) on the inaugural Hawaii cruise when they started the Morning Show.

dreadpiraterose

Clayton was LEGENDARY

Fantastic-Manner1944

In an ordinary cruise No I don’t think it makes a difference. I will say though that on our March 2020 Panama Canal where things got increasingly weird and uncertain, the cruise director and captain had an increased presence and importance. I’m not saying a different cruise director and captain wouldn’t have done as well but I do think Ashley as cruise director and Henry as captain were instrumental in keeping people happy on board and managing the uncertainty of the situation.

johngar67

I have NEVER been on a cruise when it got SILENT when the captain came on the speaker. That was definitely a first and one of the things from that cruise I will always remember. I even recorded it. And yes, Ashley (and her team) was/were incredible, especially considering the entertainment mess.

AdDependent1406

We didn't cruise again till May 2022 on the Fantasy. Swear to God, the first time I heard the chimes of "When you wish upon a star" for a Captain's announcement, I shuddered.

justplainchy

I would love to hear more about this experience if you’re willing to share! I know how weird it was being land bound (hearing about park closure, the uncertainty, thinking it would be over in two weeks), I can’t imagine how uncertain it was for y’all at sea! Did you have issues docking? It sounds like the staff did an amazing job: anything in particular stand out?? Of course feel free to tell my nosy butt to move along if you’d rather not relive it! Appreciate the answer to OPs question either way!

Fantastic-Manner1944

All things considered it went about as well as it could have in the circumstances. We missed all port stops after grand cayman (although missing Colombia was for a medical emergency). Entertainment acts weren’t able to board in Colombia either so there were many changes to the nighttime entertainment. The CD and her team really had to get creative to keep people occupied. There were some pretty unique events including a stage show the theatre cast put together last minute and a cast talent show. We docked a day early in San Diego and people could either disembark then or stay til the original disembarkation day. We were able to disembark without issues. We got lucky. A day or two later people started reporting positive tests and I know of at least two passengers who died. It was very strange to be fairly cut off from the world while something so huge was happening.

justplainchy

Oh my goodness. Thank you for sharing. Im glad they rallied for you and that all things considered it went okay for y’all. Appreciate the answer 💙

Fantastic-Manner1944

It’s the only cruise FB group I’ve every been in that people still occasionally post in 4 years later.

n365pa

True!

johngar67

I have a couple of other FB groups, but nothing like this one. We even had a Zoom magic show about a year later with one of the entertainers who was stuck on board with us, and now has carte blanche/A-list status with DCL. Leslie Iwerks also was stuck on board with us and I really hope she does something about her experience. She mentioned it at one of her talks. Sadly, John Charles was supposed to join us in Colombia, but because the president closed the port before we had arrived, he was not allowed to board and has now “retired” from DCL.

Fantastic-Manner1944

It’s a special group. We’re still friends with our table mates from that trip and have cruised with them since and have plans for another.

johngar67

Man, I could spend hours talking/writing about this cruise. It was our 24th Disney cruise and fourth Panama Canal cruise and nothing else compares to it. We were the last place on Earth where you could find Mickey and Minnie (and others). We were able to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in the bars.

AdDependent1406

I was on that cruise as well, and they were amazing.

n365pa

Hey WBPC20 neighbor! It was so sad that we didn't realize it would be Henry's last cruise. Such a gentleman. Ashley and the rest of the team did a fantastic job.

Fantastic-Manner1944

What happened in March 2020?

SecretLoathing

COVID started.

slangwhang27

Not quite as impressive as guiding a cruise through COVID or opening the Wish, but Ashley was our CD on the Fantasy earlier this year and she was so kind and personable. She had great chemistry with the ACD David as well - they were cracking each other up every morning show and clearly enjoying it so much.

DukeJackson

We cruised on the Fantasy in November and Ashley was incredible. She was everywhere, extremely personable, and it just felt like a well-run ship.

ktmnly1992

We were on the Fantasy with Ashley and David in April and I agree, they had very good chemistry and were a great team!

Fantastic-Manner1944

Ashley is really good

Quellman

Last years WBPC was uninspired. I thought it would have been better. We had a solar eclipse during transit for crying out loud.

Fantastic-Manner1944

I think it probably does make more of a difference who your entertainment team is on longer cruises with more sea days.

Quellman

Still under the direction of the CD. Matthew was the CD and he didn’t listen to guest feedback at all. The numbers of complaints made based on scheduling and availability of things was astounding. He even made reference to it as a jab. A real tool bag.

Fantastic-Manner1944

Yea I was including the CD as part of the entertainment team. I think a great CD is essential for those longer sailings. I’m sorry you had that experience. It’s pretty telling that a bunch of people were on a sailing when big things started going wrong like the 2020 Panama Canal and most still say it was a great cruise even if it was weird but people on the same itinerary years later without the extenuating circumstances didn’t have a great experience. Yea cruise directors are definitely important.

WithDisGuy_

Only one completely elevated the cruise. Trent Hitchcock. Blew my mind with how good he was.

Kmw134

Trent is the only one I could think of who truly left a memory of how much he was involved and the joy he brought!

WithDisGuy_

Are you ready are you ready ARE YOU READY????

Sakiwest

We just got off the Wonder with Trent and he was so energetic, personal, and fun. He and I had a conversation about something he said next time I’m on board with him to let him know and he would arrange something. He handled an issue during frozen like a champ. We are hardcore Trent fans now. He’ll be training a new CD during our next cruise. We are very excited.

ShadowKit21

Do you know if he will still be on the Wonder in September/October? I dont think we've had Trent before, and we're sailing on the Wonder for the first time this year. I'm really terrible for remembering names, I tell myself every cruise to write down the captain and CD but always forget

Sakiwest

It sounded like he will be on it into part of September. Then he is off in October when he is planning to go to the magic to train a new person. I didn’t ask specific dates.

LaMaupindAubigny

Trent was the director on both my Disney cruise vacations and my partner and I loved him! We’re English and sometimes catch ourselves rolling our eyes at the super enthusiastic cast members, but Trent’s joy is infectious. His morning show was required viewing in our stateroom 😂

WithDisGuy_

To this day the only morning show I wouldn’t miss. Most of the others come off fake or fake enthusiasm and I hate phony. Trent is real. He set the bar way too high because the rest don’t compare.

johngar67

Trent was the Cruise Host on the Magic for our first cruise back in 2008. The Cruise Host is usually the one who runs/hosts the major activities, and usually the adult activities in the adult areas. (Yes, that is Trent, left, back in 2008.) https://preview.redd.it/1qndjpe1dmad1.jpeg?width=1600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a448b6d209c47d812e9133cc7536040c7de4b686

slangwhang27

He was CD on our honeymoon cruise and was such a delight. Came into Cadillac Lounge, where we spent most nights, regularly and had some fun banter with the piano player (shoutout Matt Grinke, such a cool guy).

loz05

We had Trent on the first transpacific cruise last year. Was nice for us Aussies to have him on board as we sailed to Sydney for the first time.

SnooDoubts7575

We were on the Wonder in March and Trent was so fun!

SecretLoathing

I just had David Long on the Magic. He’s British, so he was more drily amusing rather than amped up. I liked him a lot. But no, 10 minutes a day of hearing from the cruise director doesn’t really affect my enjoyment either way.

Enough_Television926

We loved David! Not for any particular reason but something about him made us smile!

Rdubya44

Aren’t they all British? Lol

slangwhang27

Nope, there are some Americans and at least one Aussie.

Jaded_Paramedic_9118

Since he hasn’t been mentioned, Jimmy has been our cruise director 3 times and a family fave. “If you see it, eat it!” That being said, some of the other more boring cruise directors made the announcements and speaking bits really dry throughout the cruise, especially before stage shows. The cruise director’s roles weren’t too noticeable to us as passengers, but the crummy ones usually caused my husband and I to roll our eyes and groan through their shtick.

Aliljeff

We also had Jimmy as our cruise director. Being Australian, it was the first time my little nephew had encountered anyone like him. He was absolutely convinced that Jimmy was a Disney character. He got super excited to see him in the hall one night as we were leaving, and asked later, ‘What’s Jimmy’s show?’ (Meaning, what movie is he from?)

lapsteelguitar

It can make a difference. We were on a DCL in the Caribbean, and we needed some tennis balls for the kids talent show (long story.) The CD sent somebody ashore for the sole purpose of getting us the tennis balls, no charge to us. BTW: My kiddo was great in the show.

Photomint

Not to me, they are all similar enough, just a different corny phrase.

Useful-Inspection954

They are unnoticeable until something goes very wrong, and then they hold the bag on the staff side.

Gibsonpicker

We've had Cruise Director Peter several times. On our first cruise, I took a picture of him while he was on stage presenting the stage show. Fast forward 10+ years later, I see him in the hallway. I told him how we've enjoyed cruising with Disney and showed him that old picture. He had the biggest smile on his face and was commenting about all the hair he used to have. He has always been a great director over all these years.

Sakiwest

They totally can make a difference. Our first few cruises we never noticed them but there was one on the wonder a few years ago that was excellent (I think it was a female) and then Trent during this last cruise was fantastic. Short version: they are engaging and great you notice them. Just like the heads of the dining room. Many times the machine just works so well that you don’t even notice them though.

jeanvaljean_24601

Reading these comments, there seems to be a big misunderstanding of the Cruise Director's role. Being sort of an MC is only the most visible part of their job. In reality, they are in charge of all passenger entertainment, including all the shows (small and large), kids' club programming, trivia, arts and crafts, tours, character experiences, and many others. They supervise a crew of hundreds of people, people who interact with guests daily and who, in the end, will determine to a considerable extent what passengers think of their cruise. So, if you had a good experience on board beyond your room and food/drink, you can thank the cruise director. Do they matter? Absolutely. In DCL, it is a highly visible and coveted role, and I have yet to encounter a bad one. Perhaps that's why some people think they don't matter: they all make a tough job look effortless.

OnCloud1989

I've been on 16 cruises and it's never made a difference!

juniper134

I have a special place in my heart for Leslie from our B2B Europe cruises in 2022, but I don’t really have anyone to compare her with

SummitTheDog303

It depends on what you like to do on cruises. Before we had kids, my husband and I enjoyed going to all the game shows, trivia, dance parties on cruises. It’s what we did all day and in that case, the cruise director and their staff definitely matter and make a huge difference. Now that we have kids, we mostly do what they want. Pool, evening shows, kids club open houses, character meet and greets. We’re not interacting with the cruise director and their staff very much at all, so they really don’t matter to us as long as this is how we’re cruising.

SwanReal8484

Couldn’t tell you the name of a one.

cfudge

Never had a captain or cruise director make a noticeable difference until a couple months ago on Celebrity Ascent. Captain Tasos was friendly and entertaining, he jumped on board our tender one day to drive and did donuts. He and Alejandro the cruise director made a great pair, poking at each other all cruise. The shows that Alenjandro put on himself were genuinely funny and worth attending. Good times. As a seasoned group of cruisers we all agreed it was the first time we would remember the captain and cruise director.

Ok-Corgi-4230

I know exactly who you mean--Captain Tasos is awesome! We had him on his final time as captain of the Icon last summer. I'd definitely try to book another cruise with him for sure! He had all of us laughing throughout the trip, cranky father-in-law and all 😁

lofrench

I personally think the captain/hotel director makes a bigger than cruise director in my experience but it’s more from the back end side. The more lenient those two are the better life is for the crew and the trickle down of that results in the best experience since they’re the people you actually deal with.

PawPawAF13

The hotel directors are the unsung heroes of great cruise.

lofrench

Literally! When I was crew my whole mood was based around what privileges we had which was entirely decided by the HR lol

xiphoid77

No, i am sure they do a lot of work; but after 24 DCL cruises I don’t think they matter much. They repeat the same schtick each night and it must get old for them as it does for us. It’s a tough job, but it doesn’t matter who is cruise director.

thmstrpln

Maybe they have a few phrases in their toolbox to keep it fresh?

Awkward_Ad5650

I had one 15 years ago, that I remember vividly his name was Tex. And he was on all day long with your “Tex message” with a giggle all damn day. He was too annoying.

Most-Blackberry-9806

We have sailed DCL 13x and I have never noticed or had on my radar who the cruise director was or what they did. We don't attend every show and when we do and they talk, it's friendly and informative but not a game changer and I have never noticed them doing anything else. I do not doubt that they are valuable staff members, but I personally have never noted who the CD was on any cruise or felt that they played a role that mattered for our cruising experience.

Tjeetje

We had a crew member on the Magic 11 years ago, that really made the difference. I think he was from the entertainment group. This guy was the personification of the Disney concept. We did an 13 night transatlantic and this guy was everywhere, entertaining both kids and adults all day long. And really enjoying it himself.

SuperRob

Rachel was our first cruise director during our honeymoon cruise on the Dream. We introduced ourselves, and mentioned my wife had the same name. We came back to our stateroom at the end of the night … and found a bottle of the Dream-branded Taittinger champagne and a lovely note. Really made the trip that much more special. No surprise she’s an exec now. But every cruise director we’ve had has been great.

Imaginary_Roof_5286

They do a lot more behind the scenes than you know. When my husband was working on Dream & then Fantasy as an Imagineer (when they were being built), one particular cruise director was present at most of the meetings & also had input into what they were planning. (Dinner shows, decor items, other things they call shows that most would likely call games, etc.) Just because you only see a fraction of what they do, doesn’t mean they aren’t largely responsible for what you see & enjoy onboard.

[deleted]

Imaginary_Roof_5286

My point was that also, but to add *that you know of*. They affect more than you would know.

Ok-Corgi-4230

That's really interesting! Thanks for sharing ❤️

starrydomi

I think adult director kind of matters. They really set the vibe on the adult entertainment every night. All have been good but some were definitely better and more memorable than others.

jimfish98

It doesn't matter until you have one that is boring/bad. The Fantasy had Natalie for the longest time and every morning announcement was 'Have a be-a-u-tiful day" and my kids would mimic her accent. Some guy took over and his voice was so monotone and lacked any enthusiasm that it got annoying to hear him over the PA. We did the Wish with Ashley and she is over the top, full dress up for Pirate Night, etc and she was all over the ship interacting with everyone. Hoping to have a good one on the next cruise.

baltikboats

Gil godwyn is the only cruise director that matters.

Bucket_Handle_Tear

But why? Is there something they specifically do that makes a cruise better because they are the director?

These_Mycologist132

On my last cruise, I honestly don’t remember hearing much of anything from the director. But I didn’t really go to trivia or events. My next cruise I hope to attend more of the daily events, so maybe I’ll see more of the director.

Winst0nWolf

Never has for me
