Narwhal 2 will eventually just be an update for Narwhal 1. When that happens, if you don't update it will stop working over time, because Narwhal 2 will be on a new API key.
Reddit's demands included paying several dollars per user. I, and clearly many of the other users here, very much doubt that det0ur is bearing that out of his own pocket until whenever Narwhal 2 is done and people have switched over to it.
Furthermore, the fact that det0ur hasn't commented on how it will keep working strongly suggests that Reddit doesn't want him to comment on it.
It’s probably part of their new contract with him. He’s in a grace period before billing starts, agrees to EOL v1, and starts paying when the new revenue starts. That’s not really an exemption as it would be simply an enticement in the deal.

It's because I'm not blindly supporting the anti-reddit/pro-apollo side. For on the record, I completely agree that the turn around time given was shitty for 3PAs, but ultimately Christian stated this exact scenario that the narwhal Dev is presenting here a month ago.

Check the usernames. You replied to me. I was saying I've been down voted for this before. Pretty much if you're not openly critical to Reddit/Spez in your tone the reaction to one's comments will be met with down votes especially in the larger subs with more users on Apollo's side.

I also agree with this. I'm just not on the "Fuck Spez/Reddit for not working with Christian" side of the debate. The biggest frustration of this whole situation is so many people especially the ones supporting the mods really didn't read the posts by Christian and just went with the general narrative and the parts picked out and hammered on. A lot of questions and positions were answered and explained initially. That's why I don't feel bad for the Apollo app, he could have adjusted his payment plans to pass the costs on to the users but didn't want to. From the response and support he's gotten from the community seems like his app was valuable enough to charge the $7/month price point he needed to keep the app running and make a profit.

The fact they killed AlienBlue for the official app was a sin I’ll never forget. I used alien blue as long as I could but once they switched to Reddit hosting directly and Imgur pretty much disappeared as a content host I lost access to too many posts.

To not reward such behavior, Reddit users should encourage their communities to move to similar platforms such as [Kbin](https://kbin.social) or [Lemmy](https://lemmy.world), whose federation with the [Fediverse](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fediverse) makes it possible to switch platforms without losing access to one's favorite communities.
How about gifs in comments? The last few years I thought everyone just memed “gif” as their comment and I used my imagination on what gif they were referring to. Lo and behold you can actually post gifs as comments!

Just downloaded it. Only been playing with it for 5-10 minutes but I didn’t realize how much the color coded lines next to comments help to be able to read a thread
Also seems that if I sort comments by new in one thread it’ll now make all my comments for every thread sorted by new? Instead of just that one post. Kinda annoying unless I missed some configuration to not allow that
Everything (everything!) is backwards. It keeps going to light mode when I accidentally tap the top and I just want permanent dark mode. I’ll get used to it but I wish it had the customization of Apollo.
It can’t be as bad as the official app so it’s got that going for it!
Biggest thing for me is lack of customization for “gestures” Apollo let’s you change what they mean for each type of thing you interact with while narwhal currently doesn’t, for example changing which way you swipe for upvote/downvote or if you want a swipe to reply or collapse. It was a lot of functionality I’ve learned I will miss even if it was just a small part. Those small parts add up a lot into how you enjoy/use an app and losing that kinda sucks.
Narwhal is great but it’s just lacking a few features that made Apollo feel like a home.

I am a little confused what happens as of July 1st though if subscriptions aren’t ready yet, are you planning to wear the usage costs until you have the subscriptions ready? That seems risky if word gets out to all the Apollo orphans looking for options that aren’t the reddit app.
Which would be another level of stupidity from Reddit’s part, because that is exactly what other apps’ developers have been asking for and did not get. It could’ve prevented this entire protest if Reddit just gave a grace period to everyone.
Maybe it's worthwhile having a visible counter in the app that shows the user the incrementing number of API calls they make. I imagine many users really won't have a sense of how many calls are being made or how fast they're approaching their subscription limit.
Ironically, I wouldn't be surprised if doing so would cause users to limit their engagement on the platform.

If you're pricing based on API usage, you might need to also give users a sense of how much that translates to real-life usage. Sort of on the level of classic MP3 player stuff where you'd have 8GB = 1000 songs.
EDIT: I just realized, this might also piss people off. "Why the heck does it take X number of API calls just to load Y? This developer is so stupid and inefficient!"
Or it might drive you to have to add more customization for the user about what is or isn't loaded, or provide GUIs to load additional data. Like, view a user profile, you get the bare minimum information provided in 1 API call. Want to see their overview of posts and comments? Press a button to load that manually rather than automatically. Similarly for opening a post: maybe it can send you to the post detail page, but doesn't automatically load comments until you press a button to do so.
You might have your work cutout for you with users trying to minimize their API usage and blaming you for things outside your control.
IIRC it's not that simple, my understanding was that one of the costs Apollo had was a third party server that did API calls and cached them to avoid Apollo from overloading Reddit (which is ironic, given Spez's rhetoric about it); I assume most TPCs do something similar - and if they didn't already they definitely will do in future to try to keep costs down.
I think you're also right on your EDIT, having a count of API calls and a quota is both going to confuse people who don't know the technicalities and be a constant source of frustration. Even your examples before the edit show this: who really wants to be in a situation where they decide whether or not to view the profile of someone, to determine their trustworthiness, based upon their API quota for the month.
I know right? Like, if the cost is directly based on API calls, then that means that every little thing you do basically has a cost on it. Click that upvote arrow? Gonna cost you 0.024 cents. Load a user profile? Maybe gonna cost you 0.24 cents.
Browse Reddit for 10 minutes? Might have just cost you 15 cents.
Moderating your subreddit for a few minutes, responding to user reports, investigating a user that might be bad-faith shitposter? Might have just cost you 10 cents for the privilege of doing your volunteer work for Reddit.

I would expect that you will see a significant uptick in downloads and users once Apollo and those other few apps are shut down and people look to alternative 3Ps, will the API call limit help you stay out of financial trouble and the API cost becoming unmanageable?
To be determined. Working the math out will be the most difficult part of all of this. Managing the API cost while trying not to go bankrupt at the same time. We will see!

There has been a crackdown on user posted porn across the web for the last few years. I think it started with Tumblr getting rid of porn and has slowly creeped on to now.
Payment processors and advertisers just don’t want to touch it unless you can absolutely prove that all porn is consensual, of legal age, and isn’t “obscene”. Pornhub nuked like a decade of porn so that credit card companies would continue to serve them. OnlyFans almost destroyed their whole reason to exist over fights with the credit card companies. Tumblr is a ghost of itself because it banned porn. Even Imgur is now banning porn.
Reddit is cracking down on porn but I don’t think it’s to force people to use their app. They’ve been cracking down on it from even before that. Look at how many porn subs get banned for being “unmoderated”.
I will absolutely pay whatever you charge. I would prefer an annual option, but understand it may not be possible with rate-based pricing.
I am autistic with low vision, and Narwhal’s simple elegance has been amazing for me.
I hope 2.0 maintains at least an option for the uncluttered tone of the current app?

Narwhal was my first third party app before I started using Apollo. I’ve always at least kept it on my phone and used it every now and then. Looks like I’ll be back!
As someone who is an Apollo user but have used Narwhal a bit as well, I will say you have your work seriously cut out for you if you intend to charge $4 per month for this app. I don’t want you to replicate Apollo, but there are a LOT of things that make that app a lot better to use than Narwhal. For example, search is infinitely times better on Apollo than Narwhal.
Will Narwhal 2 have the same dark color scheme at Narwhal? Biggest reason why I don’t like the Reddit app is that it’s pure black, which is hard on my eyes. Narwhal has the best color scheme and is so easy to look at for hours.
I’d have no problem with it. My main reason for not using Narwhal has been its font is TOO SMALL at max for my reading. I’m 66 and need reading glasses. Most apps are written for young people’s eyes.
I also really liked Apollos read on scroll feature and the new comments highlight on read posts.
So, when Narwhal 2 rolls out, there won’t be a Free to use tier anymore? I.e people who limit their API usage or otherwise aren’t heavy users of Reddit will still need a base subscription to be able to use Narwhal? Is there a way to where you can be a Free user up to a certain threshold but if you hit that threshold you can’t use the API (a lockout mechanism) until you upgrade to a subscription based plan that way those who aren’t heavy users can still use it for free while those who do use it a bunch will be given the option to get on a subscription based system? Or is that not really possible?
Is there any chance you’d be willing to implement auto-collapsed parent comments that still show the parent comment’s content - but all the other child comments are “collapsed” until expanded?
If you have a moment today, check out Slide for iOS (RIP, for years really). It’s the one feature I absolutely feel makes the Reddit experience so much more engaging. With screen real estate being prime, having a glanceable slate of parent comments is very valuable in helping make the decision of “which comment topic do I want to explore more?”
As-is, Narwhal has an advanced setting to collapse all comments by default - but this is either not working presently or, if it works the way I presume it will based on collapsing comments with long-press works, it will hide the content of the parent comment.

With all due respect as a former Narwhal user, I don’t like the idea of that subscription fee largely going into Reddit’s pockets. I won’t judge anyone who wants to hop on the Narwhal train, I’m glad there will be some good alternatives to the dogshit first party app, but… it’s a little too much for me to stomach. Extortion is what it is.
If I knew a significant portion of that subscription fee was going towards the dev, I’d feel different. Not against paying for quality, which Narwhal absolutely is. All I see is that they’re forcing you to pass fees onto your user base just to allow you to tread water. I’m torn because I want to support the little guy like you, but I’m disgusted by Reddit’s actions here.
Is this in any way a significant growth opportunity for you (beyond capturing some of Apollo et al’s refugees)? Or is it as it seems… largely treading water?

I abhor subscriptions as a business model and it feels like almost everything wants to quietly siphon your bank account these days. I respect that it’s your business and you need to do what’s necessary, but paying monthly for freely accessible content is a hard bargain and I just don’t need Reddit that badly.
I have been a daily Narwhal user since Alien Blue was bought out. I paid for Narwhal once and I’d be happily willing to pay for it once again even at a premium, but I won’t do a recurring subscription.

I'm cautiously interested. I chose to use Apollo because the interface felt intuitive and flexible from the beginning, and I've never quite been able to crack the first iteration of Narwhal. It feels a bit limited and can be hard to read in some ways. Will Narwhal 2 get a design glow-up or just new features?

It's inspired by RES's [new comment count](https://i.imgur.com/Ze5IsxX.png) feature on the web in combination with an [extension](https://i.imgur.com/KCEvnj0.png).
Other 3PA developers needed the apps to make a profit. Det0ur, the developer of Narwhal, doesn't necessarily mind if he is just breaking even since this is just a side project for him
Simply, because Reddit doesn't want it to. Apollo merely existing is a threat to their official app because it gets featured by Apple and mentioned in their keynotes etc. If Apollo was able to carry on operating it would continue to split their user base.
Be under no illusions: Reddit **does not want** third party apps to exist any more. They've seen what Twitter has done and realised that they can probably get away with it, despite all the people they're going to piss off. They'll throw the odd bone here and there (as they're doing with Narwhal) to make it seem like they still give a fuck about the actual users, but they don't. They care about ad revenue, harvesting user data and the valuation they can get for their upcoming IPO.
They will continue to slowly shit on third party developers from a great height over the next year or two and make using third party apps less and less compelling. Just watch.
I hope this works and being an Apollo user I also hope this works as a test run for other 3rd party apps to find a model. I’m a bit concerned about the pricing being too much and still having to pay more and more when you get to the usage cap. Like, how much usage will I be able to squeeze from the base payment tier?
I don’t know how viable this is for devs too, it can get pricey really fast and not all users are going to be willing to move to a paying model.
Will there be a way to import shortcuts from Narwhal 1 into Narwhal 2? I am an Apollo refugee and I really can't function without shortcuts but I have a ton and I don't wanna manually add them in this app if I'll just have to do it all over again in a few months for the new app.
I also don't know if it's feasible based on how you built the app, but I wonder if you would be able to let people customize the swipe actions. I'm so used to swiping the other way for upvoting for example. If not I'm sure I'll get used to it no worries.

Not sure if you’ll read this, but I use Apollo on my Apple silicon Mac as I don’t like the official reddit site or old reddit. Is there a reason you won’t allow narwhal to be installed via the Mac App Store? I believe this is a decision on you.

The biggest frustration of this whole situation is so many people especially the ones supporting the mods really didn't read the posts by Christian and just went with the general narrative and the parts picked out and hammered on. That's why I don't feel bad for the Apollo app, he could have adjusted his payment plans to pass the costs on to the users but didn't want to. From the response and support he's gotten from the community seems like his app was valuable enough to charge the $7/month price point he needed to keep the app running and make a profit.

The fact they killed AlienBlue for the official app was a sin I’ll never forget. I used alien blue as long as I could but once they switched to Reddit hosting directly and Imgur pretty much disappeared as a content host I lost access to too many posts.

Just downloaded it. Only been playing with it for 5-10 minutes but I didn’t realize how much the color coded lines next to comments help to be able to read a thread Also seems that if I sort comments by new in one thread it’ll now make all my comments for every thread sorted by new? Instead of just that one post. Kinda annoying unless I missed some configuration to not allow that
Everything (everything!) is backwards. It keeps going to light mode when I accidentally tap the top and I just want permanent dark mode. I’ll get used to it but I wish it had the customization of Apollo. It can’t be as bad as the official app so it’s got that going for it!
Biggest thing for me is lack of customization for “gestures” Apollo let’s you change what they mean for each type of thing you interact with while narwhal currently doesn’t, for example changing which way you swipe for upvote/downvote or if you want a swipe to reply or collapse. It was a lot of functionality I’ve learned I will miss even if it was just a small part. Those small parts add up a lot into how you enjoy/use an app and losing that kinda sucks. Narwhal is great but it’s just lacking a few features that made Apollo feel like a home.

I am a little confused what happens as of July 1st though if subscriptions aren’t ready yet, are you planning to wear the usage costs until you have the subscriptions ready? He's likely been in talks with Reddit and they came to the agreement to postpone API fees for him until Narwhal 2 is ready.
Which would be another level of stupidity from Reddit’s part, because that is exactly what other apps’ developers have been asking for and did not get. It could’ve prevented this entire protest if Reddit just gave a grace period to everyone.

Maybe it's worthwhile having a visible counter in the app that shows the user the incrementing number of API calls they make. I imagine many users really won't have a sense of how many calls are being made or how fast they're approaching their subscription limit. Ironically, I wouldn't be surprised if doing so would cause users to limit their engagement on the platform. * "Maybe I won't waste my API calls on upvoting/downvoting stuff." * "I won't bother reporting this post, someone else probably will anyway." * "I don't think this post is worth checking comments for." * "This would be a good place for a joke, but eh, it's far down the chain. Probably won't get many upvotes anyway. Not worth the API call." * "This person's post seems interesting, I could check their profile to see if they have more posts, but that might not be worth the 7 API calls to load their profile page." * "I like bouncing around /r/random, but no way I'm doing that now that each time it loads it soaks up a dozen API calls just to load their front page." And so on. If you're pricing based on API usage, you might need to also give users a sense of how much that translates to real-life usage. Sort of on the level of classic MP3 player stuff where you'd have 8GB = 1000 songs. EDIT: I just realized, this might also piss people off. "Why the heck does it take X number of API calls just to load Y? This developer is so stupid and inefficient!" Or it might drive you to have to add more customization for the user about what is or isn't loaded, or provide GUIs to load additional data. Like, view a user profile, you get the bare minimum information provided in 1 API call. Want to see their overview of posts and comments? Press a button to load that manually rather than automatically. Similarly for opening a post: maybe it can send you to the post detail page, but doesn't automatically load comments until you press a button to do so. You might have your work cutout for you with users trying to minimize their API usage and blaming you for things outside your control.
IIRC it's not that simple, my understanding was that one of the costs Apollo had was a third party server that did API calls and cached them to avoid Apollo from overloading Reddit (which is ironic, given Spez's rhetoric about it); I assume most TPCs do something similar - and if they didn't already they definitely will do in future to try to keep costs down. I think you're also right on your EDIT, having a count of API calls and a quota is both going to confuse people who don't know the technicalities and be a constant source of frustration. Even your examples before the edit show this: who really wants to be in a situation where they decide whether or not to view the profile of someone, to determine their trustworthiness, based upon their API quota for the month.
I know right? Like, if the cost is directly based on API calls, then that means that every little thing you do basically has a cost on it. Click that upvote arrow? Gonna cost you 0.024 cents. Load a user profile? Maybe gonna cost you 0.24 cents. Browse Reddit for 10 minutes? Might have just cost you 15 cents. Moderating your subreddit for a few minutes, responding to user reports, investigating a user that might be bad-faith shitposter? Might have just cost you 10 cents for the privilege of doing your volunteer work for Reddit. This takes me back to the days when it cost you 25 cents per SMS text message or you were limited to something like 30 SMS texts per month.

I get that they’ll be taking huge cuts but I really hope this will still be a profitable project for you. I would expect that you will see a significant uptick in downloads and users once Apollo and those other few apps are shut down and people look to alternative 3Ps, will the API call limit help you stay out of financial trouble and the API cost becoming unmanageable?

There has been a crackdown on user posted porn across the web for the last few years. I think it started with Tumblr getting rid of porn and has slowly creeped on to now. Payment processors and advertisers just don’t want to touch it unless you can absolutely prove that all porn is consensual, of legal age, and isn’t “obscene”. Pornhub nuked like a decade of porn so that credit card companies would continue to serve them. OnlyFans almost destroyed their whole reason to exist over fights with the credit card companies. Tumblr is a ghost of itself because it banned porn. Even Imgur is now banning porn. Reddit is cracking down on porn but I don’t think it’s to force people to use their app. They’ve been cracking down on it from even before that. Look at how many porn subs get banned for being “unmoderated”.

As someone who is an Apollo user but have used Narwhal a bit as well, I will say you have your work seriously cut out for you if you intend to charge $4 per month for this app. I don’t want you to replicate Apollo, but there are a LOT of things that make that app a lot better to use than Narwhal. For example, search is infinitely times better on Apollo than Narwhal.

I’d have no problem with it. My main reason for not using Narwhal has been its font is TOO SMALL at max for my reading. I’m 66 and need reading glasses. Most apps are written for young people’s eyes. I also really liked Apollos read on scroll feature and the new comments highlight on read posts.

I.e people who limit their API usage or otherwise aren’t heavy users of Reddit will still need a base subscription to be able to use Narwhal? Is there a way to where you can be a Free user up to a certain threshold but if you hit that threshold you can’t use the API (a lockout mechanism) until you upgrade to a subscription based plan that way those who aren’t heavy users can still use it for free while those who do use it a bunch will be given the option to get on a subscription based system? Honestly no not really. The costs would be much too high.
Is there any chance you’d be willing to implement auto-collapsed parent comments that still show the parent comment’s content - but all the other child comments are “collapsed” until expanded? If you have a moment today, check out Slide for iOS (RIP, for years really). It’s the one feature I absolutely feel makes the Reddit experience so much more engaging. With screen real estate being prime, having a glanceable slate of parent comments is very valuable in helping make the decision of “which comment topic do I want to explore more?” As-is, Narwhal has an advanced setting to collapse all comments by default - but this is either not working presently or, if it works the way I presume it will based on collapsing comments with long-press works, it will hide the content of the parent comment. With all due respect as a former Narwhal user, I don’t like the idea of that subscription fee largely going into Reddit’s pockets. I won’t judge anyone who wants to hop on the Narwhal train, I’m glad there will be some good alternatives to the dogshit first party app, but… it’s a little too much for me to stomach. If I knew a significant portion of that subscription fee was going towards the dev, I’d feel different. Not against paying for quality, which Narwhal absolutely is. All I see is that they’re forcing you to pass fees onto your user base just to allow you to tread water. I’m torn because I want to support the little guy like you, but I’m disgusted by Reddit’s actions here. Is this in any way a significant growth opportunity for you (beyond capturing some of Apollo et al’s refugees)? Or is it as it seems… largely treading water?
Apparently I’m a minority here, but I won’t pay for a subscription. I abhor subscriptions as a business model and it feels like almost everything wants to quietly siphon your bank account these days. I respect that it’s your business and you need to do what’s necessary, but paying monthly for freely accessible content is a hard bargain and I just don’t need Reddit that badly. I have been a daily Narwhal user since Alien Blue was bought out. I paid for Narwhal once and I’d be happily willing to pay for it once again even at a premium, but I won’t do a recurring subscription.

I'm cautiously interested. I chose to use Apollo because the interface felt intuitive and flexible from the beginning, and I've never quite been able to crack the first iteration of Narwhal. Sure, it was a feature Apollo added only 2 months ago, when you read a post and come across it again later, it'll show a count of how many new comments have been added since you last opened the post like [this](https://i.imgur.com/FLTLXdP.jpg), and inside the post it'll highlight those new comments like [this](https://i.imgur.com/NFqa153.jpg). It's inspired by RES's [new comment count](https://i.imgur.com/Ze5IsxX.png) feature on the web in combination with an [extension](https://i.imgur.com/KCEvnj0.png).

Simply, because Reddit doesn't want it to. Apollo merely existing is a threat to their official app because it gets featured by Apple and mentioned in their keynotes etc. If Apollo was able to carry on operating it would continue to split their user base. Be under no illusions: Reddit **does not want** third party apps to exist any more. They've seen what Twitter has done and realised that they can probably get away with it, despite all the people they're going to piss off. They'll throw the odd bone here and there (as they're doing with Narwhal) to make it seem like they still give a fuck about the actual users, but they don't. They care about ad revenue, harvesting user data and the valuation they can get for their upcoming IPO. They will continue to slowly shit on third party developers from a great height over the next year or two and make using third party apps less and less compelling. Just watch.

I hope this works and being an Apollo user I also hope this works as a test run for other 3rd party apps to find a model. I’m a bit concerned about the pricing being too much and still having to pay more and more when you get to the usage cap. Like, how much usage will I be able to squeeze from the base payment tier? I don’t know how viable this is for devs too, it can get pricey really fast and not all users are going to be willing to move to a paying model.

Will there be a way to import shortcuts from Narwhal 1 into Narwhal 2? I am an Apollo refugee and I really can't function without shortcuts but I have a ton and I don't wanna manually add them in this app if I'll just have to do it all over again in a few months for the new app. I also don't know if it's feasible based on how you built the app, but I wonder if you would be able to let people customize the swipe actions. I'm so used to swiping the other way for upvoting for example. If not I'm sure I'll get used to it no worries.

In Narwhal 2, will we be able to block/unblock users? Also, will the issue of blocked users comments still showing up be resolved? BaconReader used to have this same issue because Reddit kept messing with the block system but they eventually resolved it.
Guess my iPad is going back to Narwhal. Don't remember what made me switch to Apollo but I'll probably figure it out as soon as I start using it again. Edit: it was the side bar always there and requires an additional action to hide it. Also links you open cannot be easily closed. It will remain until you open another link. RIP.

Not sure if you’ll read this, but I use Apollo on my Apple silicon Mac as I don’t like the official reddit site or old reddit. Is there a reason you won’t allow narwhal to be installed via the Mac App Store? I believe this is a decision on you.

I'm very confused by this. If they were willing to compromise with you I wonder why they basically refused to talk to Chrisitian or the RIF dev.
I’m imagining Christian’s expenses were gargantuan in light of the number of users on Apollo. Us Narwhal folks are a little more niche so that keeps costs down for now

As nice as this is unfortunately I’ll just stop using Reddit until they allow you to enable NSFW content. I’m not going to use the junk official app, and I’m not gonna pay for something that isn’t full featured. (Not your fault just expressing my displeasure at the supreme jackass /u/Spez.
