It was a an epic summer that is for sure

Streetvan1980

I can only imagine. I was only 8 when this show happened. 89 into spring 90 has so many amazing shows. Jerry was mostly healthy and the band was so tight. Wish that lasted a decade! Band was so Fing good

iluvreddit

I turned 15 this summer. Damn I wish an adult had dragged me there.

davidlowie

I was also 15….didn’t catch on until I was 18 and saw my first show at 19….if only I knew some older heads at the time!

iluvreddit

I also saw my first show at 19 or 20. But sad to say I thought the band was not very good when I finally saw them. Jerry was on his last leg. :(

davidlowie

There were some good moments. I was lucky enough to catch 4 Jgb shows, 2 at the Warfield.

SoulShine_710

I was 15 in 89' & got to do a few shows that year & in 1990 I was 16 & got to meet Jack Herer in the bus lot @ RFK July 1990 as that show was 👁‍🗨 trully amazing & really got me HOOKED! I toured as much as I could ( with JGB also ) for the last five years but it did sadden me so to see the scene deteriorate so badly as it did in 94-95 especially at Dead shows in particular... It was such a magical time, so much intense energy & so much love in the air, as with all in life though theirs still not always just great times & ☀. Remember the ol hound had to go from state to state & from town to town & not always as planned. I remember the crazy Orlando 94 shows & the cops & their gassing of the crowds outside the old Orlando arena now that was insane. You always had too just poke around & that's not changed...

Streetvan1980

I didn’t get to tour with the Grateful Dead. I just missed out. Was too young. But really missed out by years since GD was a shell of what it once was post Brent. I mean there was some shows that still I would’ve loved to have been at. Hell I guess any of them really. But I did get to do some post dead touring right after GD. Summer 96 did a mini tour of a few shows in a row. My first taste of what tour was like going from show to show. But mainly did phish tour from 97-00. Whole tours. It was such a totally free way of living. Everyone was living in the moment completely. It was such a beautiful thing. You still could hustle and not have to risk years in prison to get enough money on tour to keep yourself going and make it to each show and it be an actual way of living. Nowadays everything is so damn expensive that it’s impossible to tour like people used to. Plus the bands have tried to set tours up to deter all of that anyways. Phish did. Made it so the show distances were too far away. It’s just a way of life that I don’t think will ever happen again. Being able to follow a band and just be totally free. It’s such an amazing beautiful thing. Best times of my young life. Man I wish instead of phish tour 97-00 it was GD and JGB from the 70’s until 95 in a big custom bus with a paid driver!

crimtarkus

i think the giants shows are often overlooked on this tour. Neville brother bias here in the pouring rain.

Iko87iko

Yea i liked the first one a whole lot. I think the storm took a lot out the end of 1 and start of 2, though the brothers sitting in was a treat. Wish id have done Alpine. Im sure i went back to some stupid job or figured id better get one after doing the east run. In hindsight. I was probably figuring i better gear up for jgb, but obviously i could have made more $ hustling at the shows vs working some dead end job. What a summer and fall. Summer tour, jfb, stones for the first tine since 81/82. Man those were days

crimtarkus

Yeah I did the MA NY PA and X2 giants . Quit my job after Giants , rented a Cadillac and threw 2 tall boy tanks back seat to fund Alpine . Came back and bought my GF a husky.

arcturian_ally

Yes. 7/10 is the gem

Anarchy-Squirrel

truth

CKT2K_

Some of the best NFA, Deal, Bertha, US Blues and Cold Rain. Excellent show!

Streetvan1980

I agree. Show has so much energy. The morning dew is amazing too.

Rickerus

Watch it on YouTube if you haven’t already. The Brent/Jerry love fest is in full swing. I was there, btw, and it’s on our top 10 list for sure

Willie_The_Gambler

Man that Deal is just incredible

bobcat116

“smokin” Deal

nbainjuryr3port

cuzjed11

They loved those far out places - so many great shows in Buffalo! And Springfield, MA!

Dfried98

second ever show was Springfield, summer of '73.

j-mart77

those are indeed great shows, but 1969-07-04 should not be overlooked though.

Infamous_Somewhere_3

Went to this show and will confirm. Just watch the energy Jerry had. Smiling, dancing, and killing it on guitar and vocals. Brent was in the zone too. Set list was amazing and crowd was electric. Top 3 show I ever went too but keep in mind I only started goin in 87. Happy 4th!

chrisinspace

I was also at this show. It was hot, the lot was huge, the band played their asses off. Seems like yesterday.

jasoneff

My first show!

Stellablueberry

There are some shows I remember better than others and some just little tidbits of curious things that happened. I was at this show and had been going to shows since 81. This one definitely had the x-factor and you can feel the vibe especially as we were flooding back into the parking lot stoned, electrified, and deeply satisfied having come all that way and getting just what we came for. I remember fireworks but not sure if they were part of the show or in the lot. I found a brand new hackysack that night. Most of all I remember the feeling on that hot July night in upstate NY. There was nothing like it. Never will be. DM me if you lost a hacky sack there. I may actually still have it. Happy 4th everyone. May your love light shine bright this evening and always!

Just listened to this show on a bike ride! It rips

johnnyribcage

It’s great… I think there are some close ones though. I’m partial to 81. But 89 is awesome too. I threw it on in your honor. https://preview.redd.it/qad7e9l17kad1.jpeg?width=3788&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=11447c3cc5e65a74075f25b6eaa7c7a5c53055c9

Streetvan1980

Looks bad ass as a record. I have a lot of the CD releases and sometimes part of me wants to get some of the Vinyl just because I love how it looks. Those huge sleeves look beautiful! But as far as a medium for music I don’t think I would use them. Trying to find a curio cabinet for my box sets as you can see they are just all over the place. Don’t like leaving thousands worth of releases on the floor. https://preview.redd.it/rnvud6nz8kad1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d034c0b6898190eaa494f551eef7d293bddf61d7

johnnyribcage

I’ve slowed down a lot on the vinyl Dead shows just because they really don’t get spun a lot for that reason. But I have quite a few. There’s more on another end with the studio albums. I know they’re out of order - I usually go chronological but things have been getting a little sloppy lately. Need to reset them. Takes forever though so… not today 😂 https://preview.redd.it/wdt50tihakad1.jpeg?width=4030&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3a0ee166990a0b0dfd0a6315ecd72ed45fe804e6

It’s a shitload of flipping. But I have plenty of CDs. I like to get out the vinyl sometimes if I don’t have anything better to do. On my system, it’s usually the far superior sound. I don’t have a ton of CD boxes. Most of them I do have are on a shelf in the music room.

Admiral_Kite

Best NFA! Been loving listening to today's anniversary show 🌹❤️

Yes yes yes!! That was one of the songs that used to rattle my car when Phil would drop bombs! Might be my favorite version ever.

Best row jimmy.

crimtarkus

I noticed something recently while watching this video. while the band is tuning for set 2, weather the decision was made to play touch or not, i don't know jerry is stroking his beard and laughing smiling, why does this matter? he's actually indicating their intent to play touch of grey, based upon beard color and jerry's amusement. check it out!

Buffalo has a store on Hertel called Terapin station. Interesting little hippy shop.

Haven't been there in years, but in the early nineties the wall of tapes behind the counter was amazing. I'd guess 500 or more all perfectly organized!

Streetvan1980

Me as well. The eye contact and how Jerry used to smile big time during it. I just don’t get how people don’t dig Brent era. Just boggles my mind. Like I’m not a big 70’s fan but I can still listen to shows from 72-78 sometimes. But I listen to that era much less than Brent era shows. Nothing beats the energy from 79-90 for me. Course there are some rough years but even like 83 and 84 Jerry was just shredding so hard. I so wish he found sobriety early in his life. When he was healthy in 89 into 90 he was back to being incredible. He was smiling and looked energetic. I just think that grueling schedule was impossible for addicts to stay clean. As someone who’s been clean since Jan 07 I can say if I had endless supply of heroin and coke I probably would be dead right now myself. I quit because it was so awful fighting to not be sick as you ever could imagine. But if I never had to worry about supply I don’t think I ever would’ve quit.

I was there as well as Foxboro a couple days before. Wish I could remember more about the show other than we had nosebleed seats and it was windy up there! Glad it was filmed so I could at least relive the music

Good one to play the shit out of. Out of all my dead CD’s (and I have 99% of their releases as well as JGB) I’ve listened to it more than any other

1000%. Best show of the Brent lineup, no doubt. The group vocals with Jerry and Bob and Brent alone make this the best of all time.

BSpanzer44

WAs this the year with petty?

iluvreddit

Just listened to this (and watched) this entire show from start to finish for the first time! This is my subjective opinion when grading it. Keep in mind I'm more of a 70s Dead listener. Excellent show!! One of the best 80s shows I have listened to. Overall show rating: **B**, but compared to other post-70s shows it's an **A** Jerry's Guitar playing: **B**, he was energetic and accurate, sometimes his tone was too digital sounding Jerry's voice: **C** when compared 1978 or before, **A** compared to other 80s and 90s shows Brent's playing: **B** Mickey Hart: **D**, he was sloppy and nearly wrecked Terrapin Station and Morning Dew Bobby: **B** singing was good, could barely hear his guitar Bill K: **B+** Phil Lesh: **A+**, just perfect at every moment

Streetvan1980

You’re harsh on Jerry’s voice man. His voice in 89 was great. Strong. In tune and passionate. Idk. Not sure how that doesn’t come through. That’s the thing that lasted longest with him. Towards the end he couldn’t feel his hands. Which made playing almost impossible. Some shows in 95 his amp was turned almost totally off. His strumming hand specifically he had lost almost total feeling. He was guessing what string he was playing. But vocally he could still show that passion up until that July 9th soldier field with so many roads But as someone who mainly listens to 70’s glad to hear you watched and enjoyed it. It’s an awesome show

iluvreddit

Yeah C is a bit harsh, I was impressed by his voice overall for '80s

AppleOld5779

It’s from the late 80s

groovemongrel

I love how prevalent the B3 Hammond is in this show. Deal, NFA and US Blues really shine.

Staggerme

Was a great show!

TennesseeJed_7789

Agreed! Not close at all! This was the best!

arcturian_ally

'81 and '84 are both better than '89

ElDub62

I agree. But I do like all three.

Eastie190

Maybe in a world where 7/4/1987 didn’t exist it would be the best Fourth of July show.

Streetvan1980

The 87 show is pretty good but I still think 89 is the clear favorite for my taste

Eastie190

Fair, I’m a little biased because of the venue plus the Slow Train with Dylan always gets me going.

Streetvan1980

For me I rather hear GD by itself. I felt like a lot of the time they played with Dylan it made them both as artists not shine as much as they would by themselves. Sometimes they had their moments. But a lot of the time it just didn’t sound so great. And I absolutely love Dylan songs and the dead. My son is actually going to see Dylan this weekend. Last time I saw Dylan was 97 or 98 on Furthur for 3 shows. It wasn’t good. Not sure what was going on with him at that time. My son is into horrible rap. He grew up listening to so much great music and is into rap. Ugh. Least he got my passion for music from it. And loves music. I warned him Dylan at this age might not be so amazing. I think Willie Nelson is also on that tour but Nelson had to either cancel going on stage recently or didn’t go on stage. Which is sad to hear. So not sure if he will see him or not as well. Two legends. But two that are way past their prime by now. Still would be cool to see them. But if you don’t know those songs and your brain can’t fill in the blanks so to say it might sound rough.

Eastie190

I actually just saw Dylan and the absent Willie the other night. Granted he’s 80 something now, but I agree not my cup of tea—he covered Stella Blue and I felt nothing. I wasn’t old enough to see Jerry unfortunately but always cool to see guys that played with him live (and really opens your eyes how good Jerry actually was and how much emotion came through his play)

Streetvan1980

Yeah I’m thinking my son isn’t going to be impressed. Definitely isn’t going to change his musical tastes. Again I saw Dylan 3 times in 97 or 98 and it was very underwhelming. That was 25+ years ago. He seemed old and over it then. But I have incredible respect for Dylan. He’s written more great songs than anyone ever. In my opinion

-NewSpeedwayBoogie-

Not sure how old your son is but he will probably grow out of the shit rap phase. I grew up on good music and went through a phase with really terrible cheap SoundCloud rap in my late teens - mid 20s but now in my late 20s I’m all about good music again. Many different genres including actually good rap, but GD, Dylan, the Band and similar artists are my focus.

Streetvan1980

He’s 23 now. Will be 24 in Sept. idk he’s liked rap for a while now. Almost 10 years. I don’t get it at all. It’s sounded the same for 25 years or so. Whomever drives gets to pick the music and he likes to drive a lot when we go places. So I had to listen to his music a lot. It drove me nuts. They all use the same exact heavy vocal effects, the same electronic drum machine, the same beats per minute, hell even the same lyrics in a lot of ways. Like so many of them say the same things in their songs. Like I’ve heard Molly, Percocet, Xanax and other love ruining things rapped about by these young men way too much. But I probably sound old saying that. We have heavy addiction issues in my family and his mother’s side. So it freaks me out any influence like that. Luckily he already has graduated college and has a good job with the state right out of school. A job he isn’t really happy at right now though. I do hope he moves on from that rap because who the hell can listen to that same shit for 30 years. But then again people say that about me listening to the Gd and JGB everyday for 30 years.

-NewSpeedwayBoogie-

I’d just give it time brotha. The 2010s honestly had some incredible rap music that was some of the most innovative stuff happening in that decade so for guys your son’s age rap is really important. It is in a terrible, stale spot right now though. There is really good music in there tho but I understand it wouldn’t be your cup of tea. At some point he will likely start exploring more stuff outside of rap tho, it’s inevitable I feel.

AnotherUrbanAchiever

This was such a wholesome exchange. I’m likely younger than the both of you but am an old soul and my musical taste is largely antiquated. Maybe that’s not the right word. It took me a while to find great hip-hop. Certain flavors are just about drugs/women/money/violence/ego….and then there’s also expressive, moody poetry rivaling Langston Hughes. There are so many sub genres and I’m pretty picky about it but I’ve really found some stuff that I love, having previously written off the whole lot of it. Maybe the young man in question is actually listening to trash though. 🤷‍♂️

santareaches

Compare it to yesterday’s dead and come at the sphere

Streetvan1980

Guessing this is sarcastic. I mean course it’s not going to compare. The band was so much younger almost 40 years ago. 40 years is a long time. Plus they had Jerry still in a prime point in his career. Last time he was healthy and clear headed. Summer 89 into spring 90 he was so Fing great

santareaches

Not sarcastic. The sphere show was off the hook I’ve been going since the 70’s.
