I like how you can't see the pitch invaders at first so it looks like he is randomly charging the field.
In the first it nearly looks like he is going for the ref🤣
I would assume the bodyguard is under the same rules as the general stadium security (because they probably have an agreement, and the bodyguard in the video responds to situations that would normally be handled by stadium security i.e pitch invasions).
A pitch invasion is also a reason for stopping the game while they get whoever it is off the pitch, so quite often you'll see games pause while this is dealt with.
Normal, no. Messi isn't a normal player, probably one of the most popular players in the sport to come from South America since Pele. Hence all the pitch invasions targeted at him, which picked up since he started playing for the US MLS. Partially cause security at US sporting events is sparse (*Snipers don't mean anything unless they pull the trigger*) compared to most other countries. I'd also toss up cause the fan passion in the South American nations makes the US 4th of July seem like a normal day of the week.
As for the allowed part... Technically. 4th Official would rule who can and can't be on the field and dictate fines etc. Since play is stopped a ruling can be made that as a part of "Security," the Bodyguard is allowed on the field, which might be why he pauses before he sprints. Now David Beckham owns Messi's team and is familiar with *similar fan intensity.* Option 1 - Beckham has negotiated that Messi won't play unless the Bodyguard is included in the Security team or Option B - Beckham would pay any fines to keep Messi as a player cause it's worth it.
Really good at his job because he is not only preventing all these interactions, he also isn't being unnecessarily violent like so many security people are.
I think any person here would do this job at the drop of a hat if it were possible, executive money just to follow someone around and watch their back. The biggest thing would be constantly worrying about someone getting through intent on harm though, you'd basically have to live on edge anytime you were out in public. That's definitely not as easy as it sounds
I watched a documentary on private bodyguards for the elite. The money is crazy (easily $1k+ a day) but the guy that was the head of his security company said the job will ruin your life.
You’re on the beck and call of your employer. You CAN’T take days off. Shifts can be extremely long and you have to be on guard the whole time. There’s no down time. If you get booked for a week you are working 24/7 that whole week. Etc. I’m sure most people wouldn’t want to do it.
Imagine guarding someone like Messi. Everywhere he goes attracts crowds of hundreds of people. On the documentary one of the bodyguards was on Justin Beiber, he basically said you’d think it was an easy job because most his fans are young girls but when you have a hundred of them running towards you, it doesn’t matter how strong you are or how weak they are
Current close protection officer speaking.
It's definitely a demanding job but with equal rewards I'd say. There's more than one type of employment and you can go about the job in many different ways. Different principals means different conditions.
Superstars are from my experience the most difficult individuals to be cpo for because of the at times hysterical level of attention they get and their very outgoing lifestyles which creates a lot of exposure for the cpo to handle. It's also the single employment where I've had the most physical altercations and made the most money. But personal security exists under so many different setups that it's hard to generalize what the job is really. What Yassine is doing in the video is an example of extremes that almost doesn't exist anywhere else.
I'm with some UHNWI now and they offers terms that are highly compatible with having a family and getting to see them too. There's almost never anything dangerous in my job and when there is, we work in a large team to mitigate danger. The main difference from normal employment is that I most often will have to work during popular holidays due to the principals travel patterns. I've had xmas off for the last four years now but worked every easter. My work schedule is one week on 24/7 and three weeks off and I make around 110K a year.
> My work schedule is one week on 24/7 and three weeks off and I make around 110K a year.
Is that an average salary for those positions? I'm honestly surprised because it seems lower than I would expect with the responsibility and job requirements, especially with an UHNWI.
I've worked with HNWI and UHNWI in the past and it's pathetic how little some pay their staff. They argue over a couple thousand dollar raises yet fly away in their $60 million dollar jets for a weekend in Nantucket.
This is in Europe I might need to add. For the terms offered on the contract the pay is on par with the risk involved. As I mentioned I'm in a very low risk job atm. I've had other contracts with double that pay or more but it comes with equal risks and demands. I've had colleagues who've been in jobs with very high salaries (700K/year as an example) but that came with extreme commitment to the degree he wasn't there for any of his children's birth nor any other big events in their lives for many years and no time for vacations etc.
100%. Prob not just a bodyguard.... dude is probably a security professional that works for an agency with full security capability. International dudes like Messi don't have a bodyguard, they have a security agency....
He's not ex military https://www.goal.com/en-us/news/lionel-messi-bodyguard-really-navy-seal-giant-smoke-bomb-around-yassine-cheuko-inter-miami-boss-tata-martino/bltc600eecf0da05cf8#
There was a whole big thing about this because Instagram accounts were saying he was an ex navy seal
It’s the planning and planning and more planning that gets old. Everytime they step out of a room everything is planned and rehearsed. You have to know the routes by memory before they get there.
I doubt it’s one person as well. He probably has more than one. The man you are seeing is the actual PSO.
You have to by very situationally aware anytime in public. 90% of the time it’s just avoiding embarrassing situations but for sports people the one that should worry them the most is a 1994 Nancy Kerrigan type incident. Where someone intentionally hurts him to keep him from playing.
The schools that teach this are pretty in depth and you will have to build a solid resume before anyone worth anything would hire you.
Personality goes a long way too. If people don’t like you, you will not do well in that role.
What I like is how relaxed and calm Messi remains when he sees someone coming towards him. Like he knows his personal T-800 is close by. Seems like a lot of trust there.
"Infraction incoming I will intercept. Just stand strong." uh, okay dude but like you don't really have to talk like a robot right? like i didn't hire a oh my god i did. shiit
Could be due to the fact that he's got on sneakers running at full speed on a wet soccer field, trying to get enough traction while trying not to slip.
I never considered Messi had a bodyguard until me and this old guy chatted for a while. He made me realize that’s it’s a necessity for celebrities at this level because of the world we live in.
It came up because I mentioned Messi being at a Aldi’s in Miami and people came up for pictures and i didn’t notice anyone guarding him which means he’s very good
Edit: My bad guys! This was at a Publix not Aldi 💀
https://prosoccerwire.usatoday.com/2023/07/13/local-man-lionel-messi-goes-to-grocery-store/
I went to my knee doctor. It is the same doctor that professional NFL athletes see for their knees. One day, an extremely recognizable NFL player was there when I was there too. He also had a body guard. The body guard is the largest person I have ever seen. His muscles had muscles. I just nodded at both of them. But I could see the body guard size me up. I would never disturb anyone, especially when they are dealing with a private medical issue. After the “Star” left, the guard gave me a thumbs up.
I was at a restaurant in LA when David Beckham, Victoria and Gordon Ramsey got sat a couple tables over from us. They had 2 body guards on either side of the booth they were in. My wife raised her phone, pretty discreet, to take a pic and both of them almost instantly starting walking towards us with "pleading" faces making very "don't make us ruin your night" body language. It was funny and my wife instantly stopped so also effective.
That's a nice experience. I was standing in line for a ride at a fair one time that Rich the Kid performed at. Little did I know that Rich the Kid was cutting through the line to get on the ride and one of his massive bodyguards shoved me to the ground from behind to get me out of the way. Sure it was crowded and people were following them trying to get pictures but no warning or anything? I've never looked at bodyguards the same.
The only reason I saw Floyd Mayweather on the Venice Boardwalk is because I was like, “Whoa, those are four of the most gigantic muscular dudes I’ve ever seen.” And then only after looking at them I saw Mayweather in the middle.
I feel like the gentle handling gloves would come off once he sees multiples.
Goes from bear-hugs to picking up and chucking runners at other runners in 0 to 50 I expect.
I was going to say, props to this guy for using just enough force. He doesn't seem to let it go to his head, especially the way he lightly picked up the hands on Messi's shoulders. Wherever he learned how to bodyguard, it'd be great if bouncers and police had to go through that course as well.
Like once a month.
It’s also a PR thing. He can’t be seen body slamming fans on the pitch or smacking hands away. Bouncers don’t have to worry about that. You’re usually already drunk and being a menace before being “helped out”
Came to say that dude has his shit dialed because how he handles the situations, easy and gentle to interceptor mode. Zero escalation seen, just solid intervention.
Nah, plenty of bodyguards are ready to ruin someone's life if they get close to their employer.
Which is why this one's ability to remove individuals from the area without harming them is so impressive.
>plenty of bodyguards are ready to ruin someone's life if they get close to their employer.
Thats the low rent types alternatively PR types there simply to create social media moments.
Real bodyguards who have certifications etc are professional and understand the value of protecting the clients public image as well which would be tarnished by tabloids writing about how their security hurt someone.
Exactly!
This headline wouldn't do his legacy any good:
"MESSI SUED AFTER BODYGUARD BREAKS FANS NECK"
Later in the article:
""I just asked Messi for his autograph, now I'm lucky to be alive." said the fan, who wants to remain anonymous at this time."
😂
I do appreciate how he only uses the absolute minimum force required.
Like with the hands on Messi’s shoulder, he very calmly and gently just removed them. Seems like a really cool guy
it's really old. At least [ 15 years. ](https://www.reddit.com/r/pics/comments/dl8sc/sir_no_touching_the_dog_please/)which in internet years is a century.
So it could be that you haven't seen it because it's so old and rarely used since the influx of all other memes.
This. If you ever see two dudes about to fight, and one is serenely calm, he's about to wreck the other one. Those are the ones who should never be messed with.
True story. This was years ago.
I was drunk and being an asshole. Started a fight with this guy. He stood up gave me a look that put the fear of god into me.
I apologised and walked away. Was quite a sobering moment.
End of story.
I was the drunk idiot and didn’t realize it until I punched the guy in the face. Like a fucking movie protagonist, he turned his head back towards me and smiled through the blood in his mouth.
19 year old me learned a valuable lesson that day. As asskickings go? He was very nice about it. I think of him often.
If you ever see a fight about to start, the one trying to calmly tell the other that he doesn’t want to fight him? Is correctly worried he’s going to really hurt the idiot who is yelling.
“If you’d ever been in a real fight, you wouldn’t be so ready for another.”
> “If you’d ever been in a real fight, you wouldn’t be so ready for another.”
This isn't just about knowing you'd win. It's also about knowing that in a real fight, the winner can still take serious damage, and anyone can lose when there aren't any rules (weapons suddenly appearing, other people jumping in, sucker punches, etc.). Real fights are risky, no matter how good you are.
Damn right. There is very rarely a real fight that ends with a winner. One of you is just walking with a limp for a week as opposed to being in the hospital.
Something I’ve tried pounding into my oldest son’s thick head for years but… he’s determined to make his own mistakes.
Also, the dudes that are chill but are day laborers. Like digging ditches or holes all day…
I told my son don’t mess with those dudes.
I have a buddy who does good honest work digging holes and ditches and things for a road company.
One day we were riding on a backroad through the woods after a storm. There was a tree that fell across the road.
Now, this buddy is a big dude, but doesn’t look like he is crazy. He’s probably 6’ 6”+ so taller than most, but just looks like a normal dude. Very simple.
He just said, “ah man.”
Opened his door and with me watching from the passenger seat, he picked up this tree trunk and just moved it off the road. Got back in the truck and continued driving.
He didn’t even strain to move the thing. It was as if someone left a 2x4 in the road for a normal person.
yeah I was just going to say that. most security guys in clips ive seen seem to have a blood lust when tackling people but this guy seems really gentle while still effective.
Seriously, so much this. That last clip, where the corporate security came sprinting in two seconds after the fan would have accidentally head-butted Messi... there is no solution to the principal-agent problem. Only Messi is motivated to hire security that is going to solve Messi problems.
I think that level of motivation is probably the difference between a $3,000,000/year and a $30,000/year salary.
Corporate probably lists “free sporting events while you work” as a benefit and are getting what they pay for.
Yeah this guy is basically a top athlete paid to protect someone instead of playing a sport. Dude is quick, high awareness, great technique. If you think about it, it's like a semi-pro player vs a top pro player, in terms of both salary and skill
He definitely doesn't. There's no credible reporting to back that number up. It could be feasible that the club is paying $3MM/year for all of Messi's security (probably a lot of properties)
this is more likely - but this guy is probably on the $250-400k/yr range. plus all the trips he takes are free, probably doesn't pay for food 99% of the time as well.
I enjoyed in the last clip, he doesn't tackle the field rusher or anything, he just wraps his arms around him and makes him not a threat anymore. That's the difference between a trained guard and a "trained guard"
It makes even more sense when you think of how many people this guy must take photos with. Imagine being touched by dozens of strangers every day. Noooo thanks.
Holy shit! That guy is freaking good! I worked security on and off as a side gig for decades, and I have never seen anyone that good. His level of alertness, perception, speed, and ability to assess a situation and apply the minimum amount of force and aggression to get the job done without over applying is impressive as hell!
Any brute can do the job, but to do it with that level of professionalism is 1 in 500. I bet that guy gets paid bank and deserves every penny.
Thats what it looks like when you have actual training.
I find the amount of comments who are surprised by real licensed bodyguards being a real thing.
You would not be a good bodyguard if you did not also protect your clients public image which indeed is part of your job. Using excessive force reflects negatively on the client as well as in the following legal review.
Not quite the same as being famous, but I lived in India for a few years for work. One of the big cities, but outside of the office, I could go weeks at a time without seeing another foreigner. This meant wherever I went, people stared at me and tried to talk to me, some tried to take photos or touch me, or followed me around while I shopped. Getting that level of attention every time I left my home got old really quick, and turned me into a bit of a hermit to be honest, because I just didn't want to deal with the stares.
I can't imagine how much worse it must be if you were actually famous. You'd have no chance of peace or privacy going out, even with a whole squad of bodyguards surrounding. I can see why celebrities hire out whole venues just for themselves sometimes.
same happened to me in India. I was constantly being stared at, followed, spoken to and approached by 'well meaning' strangers who were for the most part incredibly polite and friendly, just curious to see someone different. But it went from a fun novelty to exhausting pretty quickly.
Plot twist , he’s a deranged fan who sneaks around behind Messi and takes out other fans while wearing a shirt with the slogan “there can be only one”.
For everyone that thinks this is overkill, please remember Monica Seles who was stabbed *on court during a tennis match* with a 9 inch knife
Fan is after all just a shortened form of fanatic
That man is GOOD at his job.
Nobody touches Messi - but he doesn't have to be a violent dick about it. He SPRINTS into the action to impose himself, then simply wraps somebody up and walks them away instead of blasting them into the turf or something.
He was gentle with those hands on Messi's shoulders because, well, that was all it took, wasn't it? No need for me.
Serious pro.

I like how you can't see the pitch invaders at first so it looks like he is randomly charging the field. In the first it nearly looks like he is going for the ref🤣
In the last clip it seems like the player in black thinks he's coming for him too
Looks to me like that player wanted to protect Messi too.
If I saw him sprinting in my vicinity I’d probably just freeze in place and pray I wasn’t the target lol
Could you imagine you've just given a yellow card and massive bald bearded guy runs at you in a deranged manner.
Pardon my ignorance. Is it normal or allowed for a bodyguard to go on the field in soccer?
I would assume the bodyguard is under the same rules as the general stadium security (because they probably have an agreement, and the bodyguard in the video responds to situations that would normally be handled by stadium security i.e pitch invasions). There's always money in the banana stand

I thought he was gonna demolish the last guy for sure. Basically just a full throttle hug
If I run after Messi I get to hug the body guard? Bet
I could go for a full throttle hug rn
Do it just to whisper in his ear "this is what I really wanted" while he holds you
That's what security looks like when there isn't immunity to prosecution.
Prob gets paid a shit ton

And he’s got to be in pretty good shape as well. I’d be in no position to protect anyone after a 40 yard sprint.
Tbf the person you’re apprehending just did a 100+ yard sprint lol But you’re right, that’s impressive.
You could say that he doesn't MESS-around?
When you see your bodyguard sprinting at full speed in your direction...
You can tell he’s being paid very well.
And he's very good at his job!
You can even say he's not... Messing around
![gif](giphy|xPGkOAdiIO3Is) Yeahhhhhh!
he uses just as much as force as is needed and no more, this man should be training american cops.
Nah training would take too long. That skill level would require beyond the 18 weeks most cops get before being unleashed on the public
He’s a volunteer. Only he may touch messi.
And he may touch *only* Messi...
This is getting hot
It’s going to get all Messi…
What I like is how relaxed and calm Messi remains when he sees someone coming towards him. Like he knows his personal T-800 is close by. Seems like a lot of trust there.
They’ve probably discussed the situation beforehand and the body guards instruction when Messi sees him coming is to stay still

emotion fear detected....apply compliment. You are good at football.
He runs like a maniac lol.
It's to let the fans know he's crazier.
Fans want to meet Messi. The bodyguard wants to meet the fans more!
Yeah, right? Look how enthusiastically he hugs the fans. Awww
Wish someone would run that enthusiastically at me, sadly the best I can do is watch them run away enthusiastically.
You can always run at Messi, just sayin
Run at someone the way Messi's bodyguard runs at people and you'll find true love.
Would work on me.
It’s 100% the middle linebacker Waterboy sprint. Lol knows he’s big and fast and is gonna just try and run straight through whatever is in the way.
Gave em the ol’ Bobby Boucher

that is absolutely terrifying bruh, such mass with such speed

Could be due to the fact that he's got on sneakers running at full speed on a wet soccer field, trying to get enough traction while trying not to slip.
And you're so confident in him that you just act like nothing is going on.

Ill pretend I'm going for Messi and then change direction and lightly lay my hand on the bodyguard. Fool proof plan.
Dude has eyes of a killer. Would want him protecting my fam
That’s actually an ocular pat down. A move perfected by the infamous Mac
So tired of all these jabronis
Jabroni… cool word
You keep saying this word...and it's AWESOME.
The Sheriff of Paddy’s
Is that how you see yourself?
Nah Country Mac perfected it. He was all Mac could never fully become.
You know what's badass? Being alive
Just bought a peloton aka assblaster 5000. Really hope they have ocular patdown classes as part of membership
Family: *hugging each other* Guard: *gently move them away* "This is for y'all safety, no touchy!"
Very gentle.
Came to say that dude has his shit dialed because how he handles the situations, easy and gentle to interceptor mode. Zero escalation seen, just solid intervention.
I'm so desensitized to these pitch invasion I thought he was gonna send the kid to the shadow realm
He's a bodyguard, not stadium security. He actually has training instead of just being big and belligerent.
Nah, plenty of bodyguards are ready to ruin someone's life if they get close to their employer. Which is why this one's ability to remove individuals from the area without harming them is so impressive.
Basically Messi paying a lot for a pretty top tier dude.
>plenty of bodyguards are ready to ruin someone's life if they get close to their employer. Thats the low rent types alternatively PR types there simply to create social media moments. Real bodyguards who have certifications etc are professional and understand the value of protecting the clients public image as well which would be tarnished by tabloids writing about how their security hurt someone.
Exactly! This headline wouldn't do his legacy any good: "MESSI SUED AFTER BODYGUARD BREAKS FANS NECK" Later in the article: ""I just asked Messi for his autograph, now I'm lucky to be alive." said the fan, who wants to remain anonymous at this time." 😂
Obviously a professional.
If he overescalates the situation, it's just more trouble for Messi. Doing his job properly by doing the minimum necessary.
Yes. People are quick to defend violent reactions from people in security. But doing the job without it showcases his talent.
indeed
"Touch." Don't touch.
“Touch” Am I going to have to follow you around all day?
I do appreciate how he only uses the absolute minimum force required. Like with the hands on Messi’s shoulder, he very calmly and gently just removed them. Seems like a really cool guy

it's really old. At least [ 15 years. ](https://www.reddit.com/r/pics/comments/dl8sc/sir_no_touching_the_dog_please/)which in internet years is a century. So it could be that you haven't seen it because it's so old and rarely used since the influx of all other memes.
I miss the black-framed memes.
Remember Advice Animals?
Demotivational posters?
The scariest motherfuckers I’ve met are usually keenly aware of how easily they can break people.
Smiled through the blood in his teeth….💀
Totally serious? I’m fairly sure I didn’t know real fear until that moment.
Haha, at least you had enough sense to walk away!
He realized that if he didn’t… he wouldn’t.
If you ever see a fight about to start, the one trying to calmly tell the other that he doesn’t want to fight him? Is correctly worried he’s going to really hurt the idiot who is yelling. “If you’d ever been in a real fight, you wouldn’t be so ready for another.”
> “If you’d ever been in a real fight, you wouldn’t be so ready for another.” This isn't just about knowing you'd win.
Yeah but what if I'm the toughest mother fucker in letterkenny though??
Park down the drive. Don’t come up the lane way
Also, the dudes that are chill but are day laborers. Like digging ditches or holes all day… I told my son don’t mess with those dudes. He just said, “ah man.” Opened his door and with me watching from the passenger seat, he picked up this tree trunk and just moved it off the road. Got back in the truck and continued driving. He didn’t even strain to move the thing. It was as if someone left a 2x4 in the road for a normal person.
Yeah the core strength you build from labouring is insane. You eventually start lifting like 90lbs+ around without breaking a sweat.
One guy screaming like a child, the other who never got to be a child just staring through them..
This is what protecting the bag looks like. I’m not mad, shoot, I’d do the same.
I noted the same. It's the way to do it. If he squeezed or hurt these people they may become aggressive. Dude is dialed in.
yeah I was just going to say that. most security guys in clips ive seen seem to have a blood lust when tackling people but this guy seems really gentle while still effective.
Well it’s optics too. Messi wants this popular kind image he’s not going to have someone curbstomp a 12 year old boy for saying Messi
Doesn't want to make the situation any more Messi.
i guess after all those years you just get sick of it and just hire your own, top its in job.
I looked up his salary and it’s about 3million a year
makes sense, I wouldn't want to underpay the guy whose meant to protect my life
Messi doesn’t even pay it. It’s in his Inter Miami contract.
this guy has been with Messi for years, predating his Miami tenure
Yes I’m aware, but the head coach Martino has referred to him as being part of the Inter Miami staff.
That is likely useful to solve any problems with credentials around stadiums etc.
That’s not his bodyguard it’s his tax advisor…
That was his State Farm agent
That you, Jake?
Better Body Guard than a lot of these other tools with mobs of "security" around them.
I enjoyed in the last clip, he doesn't tackle the field rusher or anything, he just wraps his arms around him and makes him not a threat anymore. That's the difference between a trained guard and a "trained guard"
i was surprised how immediate the stop was. guy must have a ton of power and control over it to just...stop a fully grown man in running mode.
The guy was also trying to stop since he'd made it to Messi. Bodyguard is definitely strong either way though.
Date night must be Awk Ward.
That‘s him taking your hand and placing it gently on Messi’s shoulder lol
His wife must get tackled by this guy daily lmao
this is the best messi side quest ever lmao it keeps getting funnier
What gives people the right to think they can come up and grab anyone else. These fans have no idea about boundaries
Grab I get. A gentle hand on a shoulder seems kinda innocent but his removal of said hand was just as gentle.
I was thinking Messi probably sets those rules. He probably doesn’t like being touched by random folks

He is not Messi-ing around.

😧 It doesn't look like much fun for anybody. I guess in some ways I'm glad I'm not famous.
The worst is being famous but not rich enough to be able to afford protection and privacy
same happened to me in India. I was constantly being stared at, followed, spoken to and approached by 'well meaning' strangers who were for the most part incredibly polite and friendly, just curious to see someone different. But it went from a fun novelty to exhausting pretty quickly.
If John Wick was halal.

He's like a force field
Plot twist , he’s a deranged fan who sneaks around behind Messi and takes out other fans while wearing a shirt with the slogan “there can be only one”.
If I was paid as much as he is you’re damn right I’d take my job as serious as this
This dude functions as if Messi saved him from a well as a child or something…
For everyone that thinks this is overkill, please remember Monica Seles who was stabbed *on court during a tennis match* with a 9 inch knife Fan is after all just a shortened form of fanatic
he should have dropkicked Salt Bae
Messi's bodyguard has a stalker.
Plot twist, he’s messi’s biggest fan boy and the constant confused look on messis face is because he has no idea who this man is
Dude runs like he's losing the battle on his way to the toilet.
