It’s the warmest and driest winter on record up in Canada as well and I am already concerned about the wildfires choking out our MN summer.   The air quality was horrible with the Canadian wildfires.

misfitx

Many fires are still burning, they're being called zombie fires.

somethingsomethingbe

I've been getting more concerned that we may have our own wildfires in the not-too-distant future...

tiffanylan

We have in the north shore anyway. I remember only a couple years ago being choked out when we were up in Lutsen and driving back to the cities on 61 and the wildfire smoke was thick as fog around Silver Bay.  Horrible.  MN certainly does have many forests but mostly up north and not nearly as many as Canada.  But if you pay attention to the weather and dryness up in Saskatchewan and other Canadian provinces, it’s historically dry and looking like yet another bad fire season.

truesince91

All the wildfires just seem suspect to me. This never used to be a thing. Times have been drastically dry I'm the 70s, 80s, 90s, and I don't remember there being a *wildfire season* in Canada or anywhere in the US for that matter as bad as these. Canada is not California or even a climate remotely close. I'm just curious on how the fires are so insane. The answer is not because of the amount of forestry.

multicolorclam

Well it's climate change and not being purposefully set

WritingSpecialist623

Well considering the sun is cooking us at an alarming rate...

StarTrek1996

While I know scientifically yes the air quality was terrible I personally just didn't ever notice the crappy air. Like yes I could see it but my breathing was never bothered once

tiffanylan

Because you are probably neither very young or very old and are very healthy. It’s very bad if you are elderly or a baby, or somebody who’s working outdoors all the time or are a pregnant woman. Or have any kind of lung disease. Also, on my weather app, it has the air pollution monitors, and it got very scary high at times to the unhealthy stage even if you don’t notice it, it’s not good to breathe, long-term.   Like even days, a week.

StarTrek1996

Yeah im aware of that which is why I saidbits not very scientific because I know if you aren't healthy its gonna be way worse hell I didn't even take my dog on walks because it's gonna fuck with him more then me

tiffanylan

Lol same we limit our dogs time outside during the worst AQ days.  They are German Shepards so they don’t love it.

Popular_Night_6336

Canadian officials are expecting one of the worst wildfires seasons on record. They are aware of large areas of overwintering fires.

alabastergrim

[Nearly 70 is forecasted next weekend in the Twin Cities, per the NWS](https://i.imgur.com/pF5mAK7.png) Winter looks to be over

Lotech

WE DEFEATED WINTER

Took-the-Blue-Pill

Welch Village: "I didn't hear no bell"

14Calypso

The only reason it'll even get that high is because of a cold front pushing the warm air ahead of it. Temps are going to drop sharply after that. Pretty common pattern for cold fronts this time of year, actually.

Strange_Vagrant

Ok, Sven.

Revelling_in_rebel

I love how he never wears a shirt in any picture

coffeeismydoc

The next day is still a high of 52

mchammer126

I hope you’re right, I was getting my spring flannels ready 😂

14Calypso

Heh, by "sharply" I meant back down towards normal.

KinderEggLaunderer

If you say that, we're gonna get dumped on

jabrollox

Pretty wild that we are normally thrilled to hit 50 1-2 times during winter. Today was the 15th time at MSP, tomorrow will be the 16th w/ the predicted high of 64!, and Tues or Thurs may be the 17th, though unlikely. The prior record was 8 times at MSP.

n8rzz

Ope

SwissRanger1003

Warmest winter….so far….

guiltycitizen

Gonna be hot as balls again this summer, ain’t it

Kruse

Not necessarily. As El Nino weakens and La Nina takes hold, it's likely to get a little more normal here. https://www.climate.gov/news-features/blogs/enso/february-2024-enso-outlook-all-along-la-nina-watch-tower https://www.dtnpf.com/agriculture/web/ag/news/article/2024/01/11/weather-outlook-summer-2024-sees-el

i-was-way-

I hope with the normal temps comes some reasonable rainfall. We didn’t mow our lawn after July 1 last year because it was so dry that it was never necessary.

Buddyslime

Another part of that is the duration it lasts.

SinisterDeath30

I'm expecting a ton of tornadoes this summer...

sapperfarms

Another 2012 again 100 days of 100 deg

OldBlueKat

I don't like seeing 'warmest winter', not because I need cold, but because it's another sign the climate is destabilizing, possibly even faster than first estimates. I am more alarmed that we may have 3rd or 4th DRIEST winter. This part of the country has patches that have been in mild-moderate drought for 3 years.Spring grass & woodland fire danger will be terrible if we don't get SOAKED somehow in the next 6-8 weeks.

blujavelin

...and kill the bee lawn I planted in the fall.

Prayer_Warrior21

Are you doing Lawns to Legumes??

blujavelin

Yes, I won a grant last summer.

Prayer_Warrior21

Awesome! I just got it this year for my cabin, pretty excited.

blujavelin

Congrats. I hope we have a decent growing season.

thumbstickz

There is a not zero percent chance I pull the roof off the jeep.

[deleted]

At least we don’t have to shovel amirite? /s

imakevoicesformycats

I recognize that this is actually not good, but I selfishly enjoyed it. I don't want it to happen again, but I enjoyed it.

nomnamless

Same, I have really enjoyed the mild winter.

noohoggin1

Well I will stick my neck out and say not only did I selfishly enjoy it, but I would be happy if winters were like this for the rest of my life 😁

Known_Leek8997

The way things are going you’ll likely get your wish.

FrigginMasshole

The trade off is shitty hot and dry summers with wildfire smoke in the air. No thanks

Known_Leek8997

Monkey's paw, for sure!

MichaelEMJAYARE

I fucking spent $300 on Korker boots with interchangeable soles so Id finally not fall on my ass when I went for nighttime walks as exercise. Now theyre just sitting in the corner gathering dust.

KnightWithAKite

I saw a box elder bug today.

MasterKaiter

I’ve had them in my house for weeks. WEEKS.

Purifiedx

All the lady bugs are back congregating inside by my patio door.

slykido999

Fuck everything about that. Next year better be back to normal 😭

TheBeardedHen

Same here! The 4 distinct seasons is what keeps me in this beautiful state. I hate to be a downer but with all the weather records we’ve broken the past 5-10 years I’m thinking mild winters might be the new norm. ☹️ I’d love to be wrong though!!

TyFogtheratrix

It's pretty wild. It's interesting to have lived through this winter. Normally we complain about 7 months of winter or so but barely having the core 3 months of winter is something else. ....so far. But all signs point to an early spring. 1st False Spring is This Thursday. Last winter was one of my favorites. Although the late spring was annoying. Totally fine if it warms up in a couple weeks for good!

TheBeardedHen

Last Winter was the best! It brought back those nostalgic feelings of being a kid in MN and the seemingly endless amounts of snow.

SloeMoe

First false spring was weeks ago...

TyFogtheratrix

I was thinking it's a little early in our climate journey to allow false spring to be during the core months of winter. So yes thursday is the last day of winter but it stays spring like into March.

bigt252002

By distinct seasons, you mean the like 4 week spurt of Spring/Fall before we move into Summer/Winter seasons? The bigger concern for me has been how short those seasons have been in the recent decade than the apparent mild winters. Agriculture and Wildlife are in more disarray than we will feel because of it. Also, not sure about the mild winter part though. Last year was one of the snowiest we've ever had. In that 5-10 year range we've also had a scooping amount of polar vortices that dropped the state (not just the Northern portion) deep into below zero territory for some pretty large swaths of time (not just 24 hours but multiple days and weeks). As other climate folks have alluded to, the worry shouldn't be more mild weather, but when we flip to the extremes that were not so common place as they are now. We shouldn't be seeing record snowfall one year and then literally zero snowcap and a thawed ground in the last week of February here.

i-was-way-

We’re definitely on average warmer over the last 25 years or so. Our garden zone changed because of it.

publicclassobject

…were you not here last year?

bigbellysteve

Fuck that

slykido999

It’s why I live where it should get cold 😁

bigbellysteve

You’re insane

AIbotman2000

So far just a one off? If this happens regularly….

slykido999

I live in Minnesota because I love our four seasons, especially winter. I will be so disappointed if I have to go through another non-existent winter 😒

TeddyBridgecollapse

And unfortunately, you most certainly will, several times. Winters are now 5.4 F warmer than they were 50 years ago, and there is absolutely no reason to believe that climate change will just stop or reverse course. This is much more likely the normal than anything we experienced earlier in our lives.

slykido999

I know 😒 I hate it

z0phi3l

We are currently in a La nina, as long as it ends by next winter should be good

silky_bag

We are in an El Niño pattern currently

z0phi3l

The Google says otherwise

Kruse

Not currently, but it's beginning to switch. https://www.climate.gov/news-features/blogs/enso/february-2024-enso-outlook-all-along-la-nina-watch-tower

private_static_void

Read the article. >And the current Super El Niño I wrote about in October has brought waves of mild Pacific air to boost our winter temperatures even higher.

silky_bag

Read the article that OP linked in this post. That will tell you we are in an El Niño

Little_Creme_5932

There is never normal anymore. The weather service adjusts the normals every ten years, so what they tell you is "normal" has been adjusted upwards, and when they tell you it is colder than normal, that usually means that it is what we called normal 40 years ago. There has been no winter in the last 5 years that resembles a typical winter as recently as the 1990s (and I've been around much longer than that).

rosedragoon

:(

Dustybingfield

Fuckin sucks fr

Mindless_Ad_6359

Good.

TrespasseR_

How about zero snow pack? I don't think that has ever happened before. Especially Canada, right?

14Calypso

It has.

weedheadg

But right now there's a blizzard going on 😒

[deleted]

So what?
