Diagnosis Murder
Law & Order (original version)
Luther
Doc Martin
Sherlock

That should do for now, I think.
Edit: Forgot about Psych and Monk.
Edit 2: and Firefly and Castle (although hearing about the strife on set was a bummer).
Edit 3: Death In Paradise and Murdoch Mysteries
Man, I love Sherlock, but I can't get into Elementary. I can understand why some people like the gender-swaps, but as a book fan, I just can't enjoy it.
the dvds i really packed on a similar trip some years back:
Zoolander, Inception, Legends of the Fall, Finding Graceland, the Princess Bride, the Lost Boys, the Crow

Flight, Whiplash, Hell or High Water, Gattaca, Little Miss Sunshine, Uncut Gems, Man on Fire, Nine Queens, Wild Tales, The Secret in Their Eyes, Mcfarland USA, Mother and Child. These are awesome films...
1776. Great musical about the writing of the declaration of independence.
He Never Died. I love this movie, I feel like most people haven't heard of it.
Gladiator. Rocky I, II, III, IV. Iron Man, Avengers. Seabiscuit.
A few Pixar/Disney movies, like Bug's Life, Tangled, Encanto, Lion King, etc. When you don't feel like a grown up movie.
The Whole Nine Yards.
Peak comedy with Matthew Perry, Bruce Willis, Amanda Peet, Natasha Henstridge, Michael Clarke Duncan, and Kevin Pollak.
Dentist (Perry) trapped in a hellish marriage realises a former Chicago mob hitman (Willis) has moved in next door, hiding from his former boss (Pollak) and contract killer colleagues (Duncan).
I rarely do comedy, but this one makes me laugh out loud every time I see it. Matthew Perry acts flawlessly, with perfect line deliveries and top-notch comedic body language. Just watch the first scene with him talking to his wife, and then pulling out of the driveway, and you'll immediately know if the movie is for you.
Great soundtrack, too. Lots of good blues, jazz, and cleverly composed background music/soundtracks.
- Mission impossible - Fallout, Rogue Nation
- Speed
- Logan
- Dark Star
- Hera Pheri
- The Good, The Bad & The Ugly
- Sorcerer
- Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara
- The Apartment
- Euro Trip
- Tenet
- Indy 5
- Treasure Planet
- Apocalypse Now
- The Great Escape
- Back To The Future

I love movies with beautiful scenery or narration that is soothing. My favs that are over 15 years old but still stand the test of time are
Cold Mountain
Green Mile
Shawshank Redemption
Gladiator
The Pianist
Here's my best movies to fall asleep to list:
* tinker tailor soldier spy
* money ball
* the big short
* the Irishman
* inside lywin Davis
* mud
* Donnie brasco
* godfather 1 and 2
* the revenant
Django Unchained is the only 3 hour movie that I wish was longer. It's entertaining the whole way and you wouldn't even notice how long it is.
The plot follows a former slave who is bought and then recruited by a bounty hunter to track and kill his former slave owners and reunite with his wife.
What ensues is an emotional, action packed, and cartoonishly gory movie. I don't recommend watching if you are sensitive to violence and racism.
1. Blues Brothers
2. The Warriors
3. Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas
4. The Invention Of Lying
5. The 36th Chamber Of Shaolin
6. Pirate Radio/The Boat That Rocked
7. Big Trouble In Little China
8. Mystery Men
9. Swiss Army Man
10. Drive Angry
11. The Harder They Fall
12. Another State Of Mind
I’ve left off any horror recommendations, I love horror as well as horror/comedies, but I didn’t know whether you were comfortable with those genres
Okay, I’ll add on to the list:
13. Bad Taste (horror/comedy)
14. Satanic (2016, horror)
15. The Lords Of Salem (horror/psychedelic)
16. Race With The Devil (horror/action)
17. Fido (horror/comedy)
18. Anna And The Apocalypse (horror/comedy/musical)
19. Hush (2016, horror)
20. In The Mouth Of Madness (horror)
If this is your only entertainment, including music, then a musical would be a good choice. Comedy and horror I feel have the most rewatch potential. So maybe young Frankenstein, Monty Python's Holy Grail, Alien, and The Thing? I mean, porn would have to be on this list id imagine.
If you enjoy older films, and can do subtitles, I'll go a little more obscure here:
Riffii (1955) - A gripping jewel heist movie. surprisingly violent crime film for its era.
Hara-kiri (1962) - A samurai requests to commit ritual suicide in the garden of a local lord. But first, he has a story to tell. I had literally no idea where this movie was going to go next. Really excellent.
High and Low (1963) - When kidnappers mistakenly abduct the child of his employee instead of his own, a businessman is forced to make some tough decisions about the ransom. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time.
Mary & Max
Akira
Soul
Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island
Rosetta
Toy Story series
The Conversation
Inside Llewyn Davis
Also can’t help but recommend A Goofy Movie, Finding Nemo, Forrest Gump, and Stand by Me for their adventurous themes
All of Quentin Tarantino's movies, all of Chris Nolan's movies, all of James Cameron's movies, all of Ari Aster's movies, all of Alex Garland's movies, all of Denis Villeneuve's movies, all of Bong Joon Ho's movies, Tony Scott's movies, all of Guillermo Del Toro's movies, Tim Burton movies, Alejandro González Iñárritu movies, Tayler Sheridan's American Front Trilogy.
On long flights, I lean towards funny and or light-hearted films. If action is involved I go the PG13 route.
Rush Hour 1&2
Meet the Parents.
Spiderman" Far from Home
Cedar Rapids.
Guardians trilogy
Nick & Nora's Infinite Playlist
Midnight in Paris
Ferris Buellers Day Off
Made of Honor
Most of mine have been said. Anyone say Girl with the Dragon tattoo? I always feel a good psychological thriller always helps pass the time. Doesn’t hurt it’s an excellent movie.
Avengers Infinity War
Avengers Endgame
Spider-Man No Way Home
The Iron Giant
The Lion King
Aladdin
Hercules
Star Wars 4 5 6
Back to the Future trilogy
Guardians of the Galaxy 1 2 3
The Dark Knight Trilogy
Lord of the Rings trilogy extended versions
King Kong
Godzilla

Rewatchable for me: Fight Club, Princess Bride, Hurt Locker, Interstellar (waning), Dune (growing).
Zero Dark Thirty, Master and Commander, Dogma (got it lol)
I’m not a “movie person”. I was in the military for seven deployments, so I’ve seen like fragments of every movie while having different extreme emotions. Those are from my DVD list, they’re kinda known favorites… definitely lean military, not a lot of nudity, definitely the thing you play for deployed people these were “popular” too. YMMV
I’m kinda reading this list to find new ones for myself, but here’s my thing:
Other people’s recommendations **suck**.
Find a *person that reviews things* that you like, and go from there, that’s helped me **a ton** in my “real life”.
Thanks for the recs!
>Find a *person that reviews things* that you like, and go from there, that’s helped me **a ton** in my “real life”.
Oh, well, that's the problem, I don't have much of a preference when it comes to genres. I grew up watching mostly anime so my taste in film is...a bit lacking in basis, to say the least. I figure, what's a better way to get my feet wet than to grab a bit from every genre? It's going to be a very long trip lol
I seriously am going with top 100 lists personally.
My issue is *I never picked whatever*, I’m just an easily content person.
Get podcasts, books, music too. Like fuckit buy a journal, feel me?
Why not?
Hayao Miyazaki Movies! My three favorites, which all have good dubs if you aren't into subtitles, are Spirited Away, Princess Monoke, and Howell's Moving Castle.
I love Alfred Hitchock - my three favorites are Rebecca, Vertigo and Notorious, but all of his speaking films are worth a watch.
I take two kinds of movies when I fly:
1. Movies I haven't seen to keep me entertained.
2. Movies I've seen so many times that closing my eyes won't take away from the experience.
Mine are mostly older comedies:
Ruthless People
Six Days Seven Knights
Romancing the Stone
A Knights Tale
Bowfinger
Get Shorty
Guardians of the Galaxy
Heaven can Wait (1978)
A Fish Called Wanda
True Lies
F/X
Elvis Has Left the Building
Galaxy Quest
Shaun of the Dead
I *must have* The Thing and Alien 1 & 2 as my comfort movies. I could also happily watch and rewatch Zombieland, Tucker & Dale, Cabin in the Woods, The Changeling (70s ghost story), Big Lebowski, Terminator, Jaws, Predator, Predators, AVP, Roadhouse (the new one!), Star Trek First Contact (I love the spooky Borg), Pulp Fiction, Forrest Gump, Princess Bride, The Private Eyes (80s), Foul Play (80s), Jumanji 1 & 2 (the new ones), Megamind, Iron Giant, Meet the Robinsons, Atlantis, Treasure Planet, Jungle Book, Watership Down, and Emperors New Groove.
Heavenly Creatures -early PEter Jackson, Melanie Lynskey and Kate Winslet's first movie. It's based on a true story that shocked 1950's New Zealand.
The Meddler -a heartwarming, very well written/acted dramedy about a widowed (or divorced) mother and her daughter and their relationship. Starring Susan Sarandon and Rose Byrne.

As you can probably tell, I like horror and sci-fi. I threw in some comedies and a western for variety.
If I'm on a long trip and need a movie, I want one that is fun to watch. So, Princess Bride, Hot Fuzz, The Force Awakens, or Spies Like Us. Easy viewing, fun times, quickly paced.
Don't know if I'm too late but
the Back to The Future Trilogy
The Adams Family Values and Reunion
Austin Powers Trilogy
Drop Dead Fred (Weird movie but you might know an actress from Star Wars)
The Three Flavors Cornetto Trilogy (Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead, The Worlds End)
Tarzan Animated Disney Movie
Big Hero 6 Disney Movie
Anchorman
Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogma, Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back, Clerks 2, Jay and Silent Bob Reboot, Clerks 3
all in the same universe Dogma might be hard to find cause someone has an iron grip on it and won't let go
UHF movie by Weird Al Yankovic
First ET The Extra Terrestrial than the terrible movie a rip-off called Mac & Me and has a Running Gag of Actor Paul Rudd no mater what he's promoting, shows the same clip from that movie on Conan O'brien going back to when he was on Friends
If I were to go somewhere without internet for a while, I'd get my dystopian/post-apocalyptic list out for some immersion. Here goes ...
- The Rover
- The Road
- George Romero's 'Dead' Trilogy
- all Mad Max films
- 28 Days Later
- The Omegaman / Last Man on Earth
- The Day the Earth Caught Fire
My comfort movies are Thor Ragnarok, Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, and (the British kids movie) Bill. I have these downloaded on my iPad nearly all the time for travelling etc.
Playtime, Dude Wheres My Car?, The Retirement Plan, Weekend At Bernies, The Princess Bride, Zoolander, Austin Powers Trilogy, Leaving Las Vegas, Bringing Out The Dead
Should be a fun playlist for at the end of my drunken nights on a beach somewhere.
I agree with so much others put on here so I’ll just throw up some comedies I like to rewatch annually and always give me that combo of a chuckle/comfort food:
Step Brothers
Anchorman
Wedding Crashers
Superbad
The Other Guys
40 Year Old Virgin
Knocked Up
Animal House
Groundhog Day
Caddy Shack
LOTR trilogy extended
This seems to be the answer to most of the questions on this sub.
I’m okay with that tbh
And my axe
Damnit. You beat me to it.
I'm saying no to this one. I prefer this trilogy in the comfort of my own home, fireplace on and some hot cocoa or similar. Not a movie for trips imo
Mad Max Fury Road, Fantastic Mr Fox, Gladiator, Terminator 2, Thor Ragnarok, Shaun of the Dead, The Florida Project, Inside Llewyn Davis, 10 Cloverfield Lane, Cabin in the Woods
Solid choices I like this list.
Cabin in the woods. A fun movie.
Double featured with Tucker and Dale vs Evil is a great time
This is a very good list
Ive seen Fantastic Mr Fox and Shaun of the Dead and I loved them--im betting ill like the rest as well. Thank u for the recs!
Lonesome Dove It’s a miniseries with a 384 minute running time, but it’s also in the running for the greatest western ever.
This does not get called out enough.
Thanks for the rec! I haven't dived into westerns despite being a history buff, this will be a nice chance of pace : )
So you know, Woodrow F. McCall, one of the lead characters, is based on Charles Goodnight. A rather famous rancher and Texas Ranger.

Man, I love Sherlock, but I can't get into Elementary. I can understand why some people like the gender-swaps, but as a book fan, I just can't enjoy it.
Keeping Mum is the best!
Sometimes I relegate people to the pond in my mind. It's canon for me that Hot Fuzz occurs in the same parish.
I’ll add my vote to these! Sneakers (and maybe add The Usual Suspects) Hot Fuzz Die Hard
Damn, it's a shame the last boy scout isn't mentioned more. One of tony Scott's best films.
Sneakers, Ma man!

Rewatchable for me: Fight Club, Princess Bride, Hurt Locker, Interstellar (waning), Dune (growing). Zero Dark Thirty, Master and Commander, Dogma (got it lol) I’m not a “movie person”. I was in the military for seven deployments, so I’ve seen like fragments of every movie while having different extreme emotions. Those are from my DVD list, they’re kinda known favorites… definitely lean military, not a lot of nudity, definitely the thing you play for deployed people these were “popular” too. YMMV I’m kinda reading this list to find new ones for myself, but here’s my thing: Other people’s recommendations **suck**.
Why not?
Little Big Man
I just did a 6-hour flight from London to Chicago with Hot Shots Part Deux, The Holdovers, and The Good Guys. Time flew by.
Miyazaki movies are my favorite! I haven't dipped into Alfred Hitchcock but I'm excited to check these out. Thanks for the recs : )
You gotta stock up on dumb comedies that you don't have to pay attention to to enjoy. Will Ferrell, Ben Stiller, Adam Sandler, Farley and Spade.
