After Bathing at Baxters by The Jefferson Airplane is the most acid soaked album I can think of. Easily their weirdest album, but still with some great songs. Anthem of the Sun by the Dead is probably as drenched in lsd but isn’t quiet as weird. The first Pink Floyd album with Sid is a solid choice as well. Pinnacle though, is Jimi Hendrix Electric Ladyland. A little later, but a perfect album. Side three when you feel it coming on…

DevinBelow

Great list. I'd maybe add Easter Everywhere by 13th Floor Elevators, but you hit my 3 of my 5 big ones for sure. Piper is, to me, the most psychedelic, but i know what you mean with Baxters.

dank_fetus

This guy knows his acid rock! I would also add Quicksilver Messenger Service self titled album or Happy Trails.

Wooden-Teaching-8343

Saucerful of secrets deserves mention too

bedroom_fascist

This is a great post. "Psychedelic" means to expand one's consciousness, and these artists, in this place and time, were trying hard (and often achieving it). Baxter's, Aoxomoxoa, Piper .... LSD was meaningful when taken in that context. Moby Grape, Quicksilver ... early Hawkwind ... all meant to open your mind via music.

Hashishiniado

I've had people on this sub tell me the GD aren't psychedelic. Phish too. 😂

Mach1mustang3511970

Don’t believe Them, they were a very influential band in the 60’s Psychedelic Blues Rock and helped launch the San Francisco sound and scene. Guess You had to live through it . They changed their sound later to a mellow Bluegrass country sound as did a lot of bands did when music was going through many changes in the 70’s

Hashishiniado

Oh yeah I don't lol, im a big dead head. It's just ignorant people trying to gatekeep. Like yeah king gizz and tame impala are awesome but there were a whole slew of bands that came before them that fully encapsulated the ethos of psychedelic music.

Hashishiniado

Even in the 70s though they would go deep on either dark Star, the other one or PITB every night covering new ground in the most mind bending ways. The jams got more structured post hiatus, but then later on they went fully psychedelic with drums>space taking up a big portion the 2nd sets.

bedroom_fascist

"People on this sub" are often young kids with no musical background nor depth.

Sonic2020

Nailed it, I always feel like people don’t talk about Baxters enough, one of the greatest albums from 60’s

Swimming-Kale-0

I feel like Crown of Creation is a super underrated one. Baxters is overall my favorite but songs like Lather,The Hkuse at Pooneli Corners, and Ice Cream Pheonix are classics. Ofc Surrealistic Pillow and Takes off are worth hearing at least once in there entirety aswell.

SkipSpenceIsGod

Pretty much everything before the ‘Volunteers’ album by JA is pretty acidy. ‘Volunteers’ is a great album but very straightforward of an album.

Swimming-Kale-0

It's not as good an album in my opinion save for Eskimo Blue Day. Really the only song I like off that one.

Swimming-Kale-0

Im_regretting_this

The 13th Floor Elevator’s whole discography, but specifically “The Psychedelic Sounds of The 13th Floor Elevators”. “Revolver” - The Beatles “Are You Experienced?” - Jimi Hendrix Experience “Anthem of the Sun” - Grateful Dead “Surrealistic Pillow” - Jefferson Airplane “The Doors” - The Doors “Morgen” - Morgen “The Who Sell Out” - The Who “Float Along - Fill Your Lungs” - King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard “Forest of Lost Children” - Kikagaku Moyo “Innerspeaker” - Tame Impala

Puzzleheaded_Bit9469

Lack of Beach Boys Smile Sessions makes this interesting but incomplete.

rls11108

Nailed 13th floor!

Swimming-Kale-0

Is Revolver really "Acid Rock" though?

corpclone

Butthole Surfer's Hairway to Steven.

HappyHarryHardOn

"Locust Abortion Technician" is my personal fave. Most psychedelic thing I know. But Hairway is #2 for sure also Brain Ticket - "Cottonwood Hill" Is the most psychedelic thing I know that isnt a Butthole album

Red-Shifts

Absolutely mad album

Now you’re talking about some of the jams from my day. John E Smoke is a great tune. https://youtu.be/3uhmOTnF92M?si=dSpepJGkiLMaul4w

Brilliant rec, I've actually listened to most of King Gizzard's discography already but I'll look for any excuse to revisit nonagon infinity!

rebelrebel1996

yes but tbh is a really hard task

drivingrain27

Amazing album. I wouldn’t call it acid rock. I wouldn’t want to be on acid for a lot of this one! Float Along and Quarters would be more of an acid rock album.

Captain Beyond self titled

Western-Spite1158

Safe as Milk has some killer tracks too

mammiemilker

I think you’re thinking of Captain Beefheart - still a solid choice though

Sir_Loin_Cloth

This album is perfect.

SkipSpenceIsGod

Love Rhino’s guitar work on that. Bobby Caldwell on drums (fresh from Johnny Winter’s band), Lee Dorman on bass (from Iron Butterfly (as was Rhino)) and Rod Evens on vocals (from Deep Purple. A real supergroup lineup.

Help-im-a-rock-

Also consider the Brown Acid compilations by Riding Easy Records and basically any song or album released by Ancient Grease Records.

mammiemilker

Love to see the Riding Easy rep 🫡

islesMTG

Nice. I’ve always loved Growers of Mushroom. They had a heavy sound too, a bit ahead of its time.

Help-im-a-rock-

Patto! I love their first album. And thanks and praise to the warm red glow!

Would Dead Weather be considered dipping a bit into Acid Rock or no? I only mentioned because I see someone else in this thread mentioned the doors and that also was one of the first bands I thought of when I first heard dead weathers sound.

bradyblack

Dead weather is incredible.

Signifi-gunt

You know I look like a woman but I cut like a buffalo. Sick song

phantomhatstrap

Randy Holden - *Population II* High Tide - *Sea Shanties* and this is really more of a gleefully demented acid folk album but Comus - *First Utterance*

GettinFritters

Yes! High Tide - Sea Shanties absolutely shreds! I'm going to have to hear your other two suggestions because I don't know them

MusclecarYearbook

Good suggestions, even if Randy's LP is not up to potential.

DRyder70

First Utterance is a bad acid trip. So disturbing, I love it.

WayoftheFred

Stunning_Ad543

No-Discipline3953

Pink Floyd “Dark side of the moon” is a psychedelic staple for good reason so that’s definitely on my list. In no particular order 1)Jim Morrison “An American Prayer” but any Doors albums 2)David Bowie “the rise and fall of Ziggy stardust and the spiders from mars” Space oddity is also very psychedelic IMO. 3)The Cure seventeen seconds specifically the song “A Forrest” 4) the beetles white album or revolver 5)Traffic dear Mr Fantasy 6) Moody Blues “Days of future past” 7) the Who Tommy 8) Radiohead Kid A 9) funkadelic “maggot brain” (is a must) 10) Black Sabbath “paranoid” album. These guys literally invented psychedelic metal, heavy metal, doom Happy listening and happy tripping

Mr_Gone11

Animals by Floyd is a good trip imo

gooselake1970

Good. I was hoping that I wouldn't be the first to mention it.

machupicchu21

Forgot about Mahavishnu...McLaughlin's amazing!!

SkipSpenceIsGod

‘Fun House’ is more a heroin rock album than acid rock. 🤣

nightcreaturespdx

Hahaha. Heroin was definitely steering the ship, but from what I've read there was plenty of acid blowing into the sails.

I thought they were awful. It's for punk rock fans TBH.

Ping_Islander

Did you listen to these specific albums? These bands have dabbled in a lot of genres, including punk, but these albums aren’t that.

Vyyper

Excellent genre to explore! Two criminally underrated suggestions are [Helios Creed](https://open.spotify.com/artist/72NmgvMSfRNaGIKfxUYaW6?si=yyuwKbDWSeirB5R-f0bb9Q) and his band [Chrome](https://open.spotify.com/artist/1OQRxZIPriIdtJCs1Dvd8w?si=tzon5cWpTXmeER8jPrJ2Lg). The [Kosmische](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3nYvBtLqB2AljSkUk4nEgv?si=e8f26f114d3e4289) end of the [Krautrock](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3aJUBDcbxvKqxWYsNSRt1M?si=2150d28b00c04f37) spectrum and [Space Rock](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3ZQZCerPkRlGryEzOzYCR2?si=8993d2b608fe4312) are heavily acid drenched. Some of of the bands that I mention in this [reply](https://old.reddit.com/r/psychedelicrock/comments/1chrrqh/love_heavy_psych_projects_my_favorites_of_current/l25yvwh/) would interest acid rockers. Maybe start with [Space Ritual](https://open.spotify.com/album/7wH3vXQZgy9a6PUvMXLayk?si=9r3XclYAREqwDHv7Whs9hg) by [Hawkwind](https://open.spotify.com/artist/2jK54ZlZhTF1TxygsVeR05?si=NBSzHBIqQBesxZEGVR4SXQ) and see where it leads?

GettinFritters

Chrome is awesome. I saw a quote from Helios Creed that said his music was him trying to recreate what Black Sabbath sounded like on lots of acid

I’ll assume you know about Jimi Hendrix and Cream. Not sure if anyone has recommended it yet but Vincebus Eruptum by Blue Cheer is about as acid rock as you can get. You can also check out Leaf Hound. Sir Lord Baltimore, Bang, Dust, Toad and Captain Beyond if you like that sound.

Days of future past. Moody blues. I don’t know if it’s acid rock but I used to listen to this album all the time when I was tripping. The album is a total experience. It starts with dawn and ends with nighttime.
