Roma vs Leverkusen will pretty much be like immovable object vs unstoppable force.
Leverkusen have never lost one game this season but Roma in the last 7 years have never lost a home european Knock-out match (20 matches: 17 wins 3 draws 0 losses and curiously the three draws came vs three different dutch teams.. So since 2017/18 season all the non-dutch teams returned home from Rome with a defeat)
solution: they draw on aggregate (the roma unbeaten run is preserved) and leverkusen win the tie breaker.
it worked for rodri and man city so surely this is a good compromise
That tie still haunts me, if Tadic scores that pen we roll right over you, it was a miracle it was only 1-0 before that. After that pen miss you gained momentum and eventually saw it out over two legs
> Roma vs Leverkusen will pretty much be like immovable object vs unstoppable force.
that sounds a lot like the sevilla final. i don't like that vibe. worried that someone will say "show must go on" again.
5 times for the draw, 6 times for the win and 4 times no change in result. (Qarabag was 4 different instances, in one game both for the draw and the win)
If i didn't fuck up my counting (i did 85+ instead of 90+) they'd lose out on 15 pts in the league which would open up a title race. They'd be out in Europa and domestic cup iirc but i only breezed past those games.
Tbh that's not sustainable in the long run and eventually next season when they will not have the same desire to wi,n they will probably lose these matches. That's when a new test for Alonso and Leverkusen will start to overcome or build a new momentum.
Imo Xabi's last big question mark is exactly that. How he reacts when his team goes on a slump, cause eventually that's unavoidable.
Those slumps are also why I don't think of Flick as a top coach, he couldn't get us out of it and our results toward the end of his tenure were very mediocre. Of course, that was just one instance, but the less said about his NT tenure, the better.
Last seasons Union all over again with those scorelines. Of course tactics etc are different but look what happened to them. Once the 90+ luck fades things can get sad really quickly, no matter how gifted your squad is
Tbf they'd still be in first without all the late goals but it would be really close between them and Bayern right now (Leverkusen 72 pts Bayern 69 pts)
They'll be just fine - they'll still have a deep and talented squad, might be less affected by injuries than they were this season, and even a regression to the mean will have them among the top four and playing a decent Champions League campaign.
At this point the players themselves can't believe just how often they're able to pull their head out of the noose late in games anymore, either, and yet it's a lot more than just luck: They're an incredibly good side, able to tire out opponents, bring on substitutes that are every bit as good as their starters, keep plucking away with a cool head instead of panicking, and obviously have a massive amount of self-belief. Even if the results might not quite go their way next season the way they did this season, those factors won't change much.
Their squad isn't really deep tho. We see it when Alonso rotates and they get in trouble and he thrn needs his starters in the 2nd half to salvage a result.
Add a couple departures and key injuries they didn't really have this season and they could be in trouble real fast.
It's almost a guarantee they won't be close in terms of wins because this type of seasons and how they win I almost impossible to repeat. Add the CL in the mix where you can't just coast against random teams from Azerbaijan or whatever.
I mean they've got, what, 16-17 players who could all reasonably start without much of a dip in quality? The rotation we've seen this season is proving that they've got options - and that's despite longer absences by Kossonou, Arthur, Palacios, Schick and Boniface. That's a pretty deep squad I reckon, because they've got options in just about every position, and the luxury of rotating out some starters to then throw them on to change a game speaks to that as well.
They'll inevitably have some squad turnover, sure, but any departures will be offset by players being brought in - likely in a 'sell one player for big money, bring in three or four other players with that revenue' approach like they did last summer.
Not deep relative to Europe's elite and like I said, when Alonso rotates they usually struggle. If Wirtz is on the bench, generating chances is a real struggle
> they will not have the same desire to wi,n they will probably lose these matches.
i mean right now they are more or less playing for nothing in the league
While most of these late goals were due to them just running circles around their opponents and eventually scoring because it was "due", the last two Bundesliga games were really iffy when it comes to refereeing. Can't change it much but in both the game against Dortmund and now Stuttgart, the refs were favouring Leverkusen ever so slightly. One could argue that the second goal yesterday shouldn't have counted, for example.
They'll probably go unbeaten in the league at the very least unless Frankfurt has their random good game against a top side.
I believe Leipzig is where the actual insanity started. Following that they turned around the DFB Pokal match against Stuttgart, then the insane last-minute win in the Europa League. Their 2024 finishing is unlike anything I've ever seen in this sport.
Lunev left Leverkusen only to conceded 11 Goals against them in 4 games, 4 of them in Stoppage Time and Leverkusen are on their way to an unbeaten treble💀💀
90+5 Getafe
90+4 Union Berlin
90+2 Barcelona
90+4 Napoli
90+2 Deportivo Alaves
90+1 Arandina
116, 120+2 Atletico Madrid
90+9 Almeria
90+4 Celta Vigo
Napoli, Arandina and Celta Vigo weren’t equalizers or winners tho
That qarabag 2nd leg was insane. 3 goals after the 90th minute. The referee seemed to keep the watch going for Leverkusen to score the 3rd goal to prevent overtime. It was insanity.
I was a neutral but naturally rooting for the underdog, Qarabag
The real crazy thing about this is that all of them were game changing goals. I believe Dortmund and also Bayern had more goals scored in the 80+ minute this season, but they were mostly non-deciding goals.
But nearly all of those goals changed the game for Leverkusen
They got 5 minutes yesterday which was legitimate. In those 5 minutes Nübel was injured for 1 minute and there was one substitution. They scored in the 95:50th minute. Go cry somewhere else
Except that Leverkusen literally never has been a relegation candidate in the last few decades. Will they have another unbeaten season? Surely not. But on paper they are still a top 2 team in Germany and unless they lose their entire squad + Alonso and dont replace them they still are going to be.
And what has always made Leverkusen so successful is that they are very good at replacing their players. So they'll be fine. I see them going for the championship too next year. If they can get a new ROM for Hofmann they basically have no weakness at all in the squad. Just need to stay fit and replace the 1-2 players who will probably leave.

Their whole season is just perfectly set up for Kaiserslautern to score in the 90+6 minute in the DFB Pokal to win 1-0
You mean both them Roma and Bochum to win with a goal in the 90+10 minute
probably Marseille* with Gasset borderline winning 2 continental titles within half a year
Roma have the arc to win against Leverkusen and the evil bald Taylor
Taylor is ref against Leverkusen????
Oh god Marseille please, they'll have to buy Correa then lmao
That is how it gets an obligation??
They need to qualify for the UCL, they can't through the league but if they win the Europa League
Oh, that makes sense, I didn't think about that consequence
Subscribe
Rooting for you!
All of Germany is rooting for them.
Except for the 11 genuine Lev fans and the new "fans" they got
Nah Schick would score in 90'+12 to make it even
And then again in 90+14
Neverkusen ancestry
qarabag was the most insane game
Imagine being a Qarabag fan and see Bayer score 4 goals against you in stoppage time.
The fact they're on this list ***three times*** is mental
Four actually
They were in the same group and then faced each other again in the round of 16.
Xabi Alonso should stay another 5 years with us to prove himself his team can finish games in the previous 80 minutes.
Sub fucking scribe

Leverkusen should take a connecting flight via Schiphol. It's not that much of a detour.
It’s a 2.5 hour drive. Not that bad
solution: they draw on aggregate (the roma unbeaten run is preserved) and leverkusen win the tie breaker. it worked for rodri and man city so surely this is a good compromise
I don't care about compromises I care about getting what they stole from us one year ago. Sorry that Roma - Bayer is not going to be the final
maybe next season
Your insistence would usually get me pissed but I know you're an Arsenal fan, you just got used to saying that sentence lately
That tie still haunts me, if Tadic scores that pen we roll right over you, it was a miracle it was only 1-0 before that. After that pen miss you gained momentum and eventually saw it out over two legs
I know DDR has been doing great but don't forget they had the no. 1 king of building an European fortress at home before him
> Roma vs Leverkusen will pretty much be like immovable object vs unstoppable force. that sounds a lot like the sevilla final. i don't like that vibe. worried that someone will say "show must go on" again.
Teutonia Ottensen being on this list is just quite funny as the injury time goal there made it 8-0
How many of these saved the unbeaten streak (i.e. were equalisers)?
5 times for the draw, 6 times for the win and 4 times no change in result. (Qarabag was 4 different instances, in one game both for the draw and the win)

They also had an 89th minute goal in the second West ham game lol
And and 88th minute equalizer against Hoffenheim in the same game they got the 90+1 winning goal.
Tbh that's not sustainable in the long run and eventually next season when they will not have the same desire to wi,n they will probably lose these matches. That's when a new test for Alonso and Leverkusen will start to overcome or build a new momentum.

And we'd talk about the legendary Qarabag run in the EL.

If the most creative player ain't playing it's worse than when he's playing.. What a surprize.

Leverkusen is the main character this season.
While most of these late goals were due to them just running circles around their opponents and eventually scoring because it was "due", the last two Bundesliga games were really iffy when it comes to refereeing. What was wrong with the 2nd goal?
People who don't know the rules, that's all.
It hit an arm before going in.
An arm that was very close to the body, right? Didn't see anything wrong with it. I personally thought the free kick was insanely soft, but eh.
His arm was tight against his body, even the more anal EPL VAR wouldn't have called that a handball.
If Leverkusen can win trophies so can Spurs tbh
I appreciate it, but my body starts to reject hope & accept doom.
no
Hahaha no
Now Kane is gone, that's actually possible.
All of those starting from the game vs. Augsburg were in the second half of the season iirc.
Stuttgart, Qarabag and Bayern tasted it twice
Qarabag was the most ridiculous one. 4 times against them. Were winning 2-0 at a point in both games
That was never a pen!
wtf it’s ridiculous
That shit ain't normal.
I believe Leipzig is where the actual insanity started. Following that they turned around the DFB Pokal match against Stuttgart, then the insane last-minute win in the Europa League. Their 2024 finishing is unlike anything I've ever seen in this sport.
this is beyond the powers of even fergie time
xabi time
Xabi time
Theres also one or two in the 89 minute. I counted 10 winners or equalisers in the 89 minute or later just in 2024
Lunev left Leverkusen only to conceded 11 Goals against them in 4 games, 4 of them in Stoppage Time and Leverkusen are on their way to an unbeaten treble💀💀
seriously tho can someone make this for real madrid?
90+5 Getafe 90+4 Union Berlin 90+2 Barcelona 90+4 Napoli 90+2 Deportivo Alaves 90+1 Arandina 116, 120+2 Atletico Madrid 90+9 Almeria 90+4 Celta Vigo Napoli, Arandina and Celta Vigo weren’t equalizers or winners tho
4 in OP aren't winners or equalizers either
Someone make a compilation
Lmfao seeing it written out is mad
Plot armor irl
*so far
They truly have the plot armor this season don't they.
The power of believing.
Turns out if you let the game run long enough it will lead to late goals...
16??
How many of these were to clinch a result?
This stat is just whoah!
You play till the last whistle
This could very well be like United goof ups in 90+ minutes this season
This could very well be like United goof ups in 90+ minutes this season
Xabi time
Xabi time
O pacto The pact Der pakt
The Real Madrid of Germany
Poor Qarabag
Unsustainable
They hate Qarabag
that's crazy. i remember AS Milano had a lot of goals in the 90+ but not nearly as Leverkusen.
Script writers are boring
This is some anime shit
Leverkusen pulling some anime protagonist shit out of their ass every game is quickly becoming my favourite footballing moment of a given week.

I’m so used to the crappy headlines with the 1 word finishes I was abit shocked not to see it. Clinical.
Activate sergio ramos mode
The anti United.
Thats a sign of incredible mentality which is all on the coach. No team with a bad player-coach chemistry would be able to do such a thing.
It is not unsustainable next season. They have to strengthen a lit by next season or bayern going to monopoly again.
think you made an opsie double negative

If this was in the prem there last 96th minute goal wouldn’t count. Because of the shit refs in the prem they would have given a hand ball.
So weird that Leverkusen always gets like 10 minutes added time in every fucking game. Very weird. So weird
They got 5 minutes yesterday which was legitimate. In those 5 minutes Nübel was injured for 1 minute and there was one substitution. They scored in the 95:50th minute. Go cry somewhere else

Corruption at it's finest
