Literally the first thing I thought of when I saw this. And I don’t have the dirtiest mind… so assume many people will make this assumption/ connection.
I used to work with a guy who had this exact tattoo, he said he got it done so that when he takes dick pics with his cock in his hand the girls can see that he doesn't have tiny hands since the segments are to scale.
Onto your point though, yes palm tattoos are painful.
I saw this, and thought, fucking genius. I do a lot of carpentry and fishing. A quick 6in guides for reference is amazing. I always eyeball estimations but this tat is calling to my inner utilitarian.
I have a brag! My hand is exactly 6in from the bracelet of fate line to the tip of my middle finger. I use it all the time as my measuring reference for stuff, at work.
The distance between my thumb tip and pinky tip (hand extended fully) is an exact 8”, I use it for rough measurements mostly, or I’ve used it as a joke to measure partner’s appendages
For sure, that said, i think you will be touching that tat up quite a bit over the years. Nature of hand tats unfortunately. They just get a lot of ware and tare.
it's a ruler for when i have to measure bones in the field!! it's really hard to always have a ruler on hand lol
haha edit; i guess i do have a ruler always on hand
i'm surprised no one's caught it yet!! i've been like "blah blah ruler gets taken, ruler is bulky, i forget ruler, hard to have on hand" and no one has said "well you do have a ruler on hand now" LOL
yeah!! i dabbled in zooarchaeology and animal osteology during my undergrad and am now undertaking my master's and moving over to human bones. no penis-driven tattoos here, just the real deal ;-)
I’m a mortician — your comment made me laugh. I’d be glad to be in your position too, your job sounds super cool and you probably make significantly more than what we make!
HAHAHA i just hate the ritual of funerals! i also get to deal with a pretty detached version of death; i'm not good with the emotions side. major props to you guys for really being in the thick of it
I totally get that, I’m not a fan of all rites and
rituals myself! I enjoy getting to see the vastly different types of ways people honor their loved ones though. I’m sure you get to see some really fascinating aspects of culture and history we don’t typically get to so I’m really jealous of that. l’m not exactly spun up on the intricacies of y’all’s work but do you primarily work in both dig sites and a lab environment? I imagine it could be very difficult to uncover someone’s resting place especially not knowing what you’ll be seeing. I feel like we exist in a fairly controlled environment that makes it easier to handle even if the tempo itself changes variably. So honestly props to you guys too.
since i'm doing my MA i'm mostly in a lab for human remains; i've only done animal bones in the field. my human remains are all skeletonized by the time they get to me which makes it much easier too!! even my cadavers are prepared. all bonus points of being a student but i've been pursuing careers at my coroner's office so hopefully soon i'll get into the REAL decomp
Lol I saw your comment about measuring bones and immediately knew you were an anthropologist.
I'm starting my undergraduate thesis in medical anthropology, and I am also a lover of osteology. Always a joy to see a fellow anthropologist in an unexpected place. That tattoo is brilliant!
so there's two stages i usually do. first is field cataloguing (or really quick lab cataloguing). that's mostly for diagnostic purposes and so i have a rough map to start with. second is my in depth dive. that's always in millimeters and generally done with calipers instead of a ruler. it just depends on the data i need
edited to add: my ruler isn't the most precise either due to its location. it's really for my own convenience
i'm thankful i chose some little lines because around my joints and heel of my hand it started to get reallllll funky, kudos to everyone who's ever gotten their full palm done
most of my bones are fragments/shards and also my hands are not thatttt big. i knew anything on the pad of my ring finger would automatically fall out based on other finger tats too :-(
Just to add, I did a slightly similar thing, not as bold lines, just a a quick reference for the small parts I use for work, as I still have an issue telling if it's a 2inch or 3inch screw by looking, even after all these years. 3 years later it's still the same as it was when I did it! Granted, my hatch marks a lot smaller, from my experience, I imagine they'll just get 'duller' rather than 'disapear' and still remain functional.
I like your execution! Functional tattoos are rad.
THAT'S ALSO VERY HELPFUL!! i tend to wear black so if gore gets on them it isn't as gross but we also have the weird cream colored ones lol. thank you so much!'
I was in charge of ordering my own supplies at work, when I saw black was an option, I stood out because no one else had them, and they matched my all black tattoos. Borrowed a pair of blue gloves while working and looked down and totally noticed them, I usually grab my parts before gloving up, so I never needed the ruler while wearing them, and was embarrassing dumbfounded at the realization, when I mentioned it to my coworker, to his very reasonable response "I thought that was the point"
I've heard from my tattoo artist that palm tattoos hold up better if they are done in dot-work style, if it falls off maybe you can consider looking into getting it re-done in that style for more longevity
they are!! the only thing that sucks is its accuracy depends on how tensed my hand is and will probably only continue to get worse as i get it touched up 😩😩
I've debated for years getting a ruler tattoo because I knit and crochet so much. I'd need it in inches and cm since you never know what you're going to have to deal with in Canada.
The first thing I thought of when I saw this image was “yikes” because hand tattoos warp and fade and don’t last but you already know it, so now my opinion changes to what a IDGAF badass lol
That makes sense! I have also considered tattooing an R for right and L for left on my hands because I need it for work and it doesn't come naturally to me
don’t be too disappointed! i have my palms done and i have heard from multiple artists that it’s basically essential to blow out lines on the palm, otherwise it’ll fall out.
I’ve had my palm and fingers tattooed for around 2 years now and I have often have sweaty hands lmao but they’ve held up so well. I think as long as the artist did them deep enough and you let it heal correctly you should be fine
Pointer finger is the most used and most sensitive, ring is the least used and least sensitive, and middle has other connotations. Idk if it was part of their reasoning (or the artist's), but it makes sense.
my artist and i were shooting for the middle finger (longer ruler) but realized my thumb meat created an uneven surface. so we moved it over to my ring bc it was flatter!' i wasn't too worried about pain or anything
I have a palm tattoo that has lasted about 8 years and it’s never needed a touch up! The lines have definitely bled but no fall out. I think palm tattoos depend a lot on your skin/your lifestyle. I cared for mine that same way I did for all my tattoos and tbh I almost never apply hand lotion now.
that's good to know! i don't do too much hard labor but i live in the armpit of a very hot state so i sweat a lotttt and my artist said that would be my biggest enemy
I want to get something similar on the side of my arm! I’m a baker and crocheter so it would come in handy for both! I also want to get a line on my thumb for where an inch is
My partner was complimented on the “measuring devices” he has down the sides of his index fingers… he was like- does that guy not know what a ruler is?
I've got two palm tattoos (both same day). My soul left my body getting it done. Mines more middle palm.
Keep clean paper towels around to dab excess sweat.
Wrapped the top of my computer mouse in clingwrap.
I put healing balm on twice a day.
I didnt work for 2 weeks but it still wasn't healed fully. And the after pain lasted awhile.
But 2 years later they're still solid and never needed a touch up.
Blowouts on the palm are kind of needed to make sure they stay.
Fingers crossed for you!
it depends on your pain tolerance, mine was not as spicy as i thought it would be in general but certain areas made me feel like my fingers were getting sawed off with a hot butter knife (and these are little dashes!). to date my most painful tat is on my forearm bc my artist was really heavy handed
yes. it's in amerimeasures and large increments at that because palm tattoos tend to blow the fuck out. i didn't want an indecipherable blob especially since touchups are inevitable, so i went for half inch increments
some cooks and chefs i know do this on the back of the hand/thumb area so they can have a precise reference for knife cuts. we don't need six inches, barely over a few inches if anything. just make sure you use the entire length of the knife to get any kind of satisfaction, no matter the size 😉 also, tools. tools and gadgets help many situations excel to their fullest potential.
I used to work as a stone mason apprentice and this would be so sick for measuring stones for facades when ya forget your tape measure across the worksite
My hands sweat when I'm hot, in pain, wearing gloves, etc.. aka pretty easily. And my palms will be 3 years old in January (you should have seen how much my artist was having to wipe due to my sweating from the pain.. ha) and have lasted well. But I work an indoor, office job so my hands aren't exposed to the elements much.
Washing your hands a lot or working with your hands will likely impact longevity.
You'll likely need a touch up pretty much right away, but if it's done right, only a very minor one to resaturate a few spots.
I would keep paper towels handy to dry it off periodically throughout the day. And the first few days, until the scabby/itchy/peeling stage, wear a disposable glove to do anything with that hand. That's what my artist had me doing.
Also mine went through a ***second*** peeling/itchy stage.. so you potentially may have to go through the itchy phase for closer to 2 weeks than 1 on yours also. Worst itchy phase of any tattoo I've ever had.. (but my armpits were done day before yesterday and I suspect that may end up being worse lol)
Reading the comments… I’m ashamed at what I assumed this was for 💀 you have fun with your bones 😂
i promise i would not go to the trouble and pain of inking a 5 inch ruler on my hand just so i could measure some phalluses lol
I’m a lesbian so I thought it was for depth gaging 💀
STOP 💀😅
Only at the proper depth
Same and same xD
Biiiiiitch
Dead! 💀
What the hell does that even mean ?
im surprised theres a redditor who doesnt know
What ? She is going to stick her entire hand inside her partner ? Is that common for lesbians ?
Not uncommon at all, I've seen many films on the subject.
Not that uncommon? Plenty people out there fisting, not just lesbians 🤷♀️
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Literally the first thing I thought of when I saw this. And I don’t have the dirtiest mind… so assume many people will make this assumption/ connection.
i rest assured knowing the people in my personal and professional lives know that i'm not out here measuring cocks willy nilly
Willy nilly. Nice
FUCKKK i'm continuing with the cock based puns with someone who has hideous tits. i love life!!!
Life is good, doll-face. Enjoy it.
Ty RT RT ee
I mean if you did props on it, the very least knowing what the real average length is LOL
If it makes you feel any better, you're not alone 😄
"you have fun with your bones" I'm certainly tryin'
This still sounds like it’s about weens. What did I miss.
I used to work with a guy who had this exact tattoo, he said he got it done so that when he takes dick pics with his cock in his hand the girls can see that he doesn't have tiny hands since the segments are to scale. Onto your point though, yes palm tattoos are painful.
i wish i had the proper equipment for that cuz it's lowkey metal i'm so disappointing guys
After considering what body part I could measure, all I came up with was quantifying boob sagginess by year. :(
like one of thise growth charts on the wall LMAO
Well now I know what I'm doing with my doorframes since I'm childfree
Probably would need those on your tummy LOL
Lines on your ribs?
🤣💀
U could get the lines on ur torso
😭 this made me laugh so hard
Just make the lines closer together and/or add a fine print disclaimer ^^not ^^to ^^scale.
I saw this, and thought, fucking genius. I do a lot of carpentry and fishing. A quick 6in guides for reference is amazing. I always eyeball estimations but this tat is calling to my inner utilitarian.
US currency bills are exactly 6 inches - since I found that out I usually have something on me that I can measure with.
Great life hack!
No they’re not, they’re 6.14 inches long.
As long as you are not growing or shrinking at the moment.
My hulk days are over. Just getting slower and chillin out these days.
For sure, that said, i think you will be touching that tat up quite a bit over the years. Nature of hand tats unfortunately. They just get a lot of ware and tare.
That's a great tattoo idea! I'll get mine at ½ scale please!
I honestly didn’t read the group and thought it was marker for a scan on his hand he was having done (like broken bone)
I'm a woman and I couldn't imagine having a hog so huge that I needed a "ruler on hand" so people would believe me! 😂😭
Definitely assumed hairdresser until I saw the bones comment 🤣
i wish i was talented enough to do hair!! sadly i'm meant to be hunched over remains 😩😩
This is a very unique tattoo! Ah I miss the fine lining the day when I got my tattoo. What’s the meaning behind it? :o
it's a ruler for when i have to measure bones in the field!! it's really hard to always have a ruler on hand lol haha edit; i guess i do have a ruler always on hand
Shut the .... get out of here, Dad. NOW.
i'm surprised no one's caught it yet!! i've been like "blah blah ruler gets taken, ruler is bulky, i forget ruler, hard to have on hand" and no one has said "well you do have a ruler on hand now" LOL
You're doing the Lord's work by setting the joke up for someone.
I’ve got to hand it to you, it’s a good idea for a tattoo.
"bones"
yeah!! i dabbled in zooarchaeology and animal osteology during my undergrad and am now undertaking my master's and moving over to human bones. no penis-driven tattoos here, just the real deal ;-)
Everyone is up here thinking dick pics and I assumed you were a knitter…
i don't have a dick so sadly i can't wow anyone with my newfound scale LMAO i do dabble in knitting!!
It’ll be super handy for swatching 😆
That’s cool, I assume your either a paleontologist or a mortician
every day i wake up glad i'm not a mortician. close! i'm a bioarchaeologist/forensic anthropologist
I’m a mortician — your comment made me laugh. I’d be glad to be in your position too, your job sounds super cool and you probably make significantly more than what we make!
HAHAHA i just hate the ritual of funerals! i also get to deal with a pretty detached version of death; i'm not good with the emotions side. major props to you guys for really being in the thick of it

yeah! no penis connotations sadly. i'm an archaeologist/forensic anthropologist lol
Lol I saw your comment about measuring bones and immediately knew you were an anthropologist. I'm starting my undergraduate thesis in medical anthropology, and I am also a lover of osteology. Always a joy to see a fellow anthropologist in an unexpected place. That tattoo is brilliant!
haha thank you!!! and good luck my friend, anthro put me thru the wringer
SO COOL
Ikr🤔
If it has to be precise measurements surely they wouldn’t allow that right?
so there's two stages i usually do. first is field cataloguing (or really quick lab cataloguing). that's mostly for diagnostic purposes and so i have a rough map to start with. second is my in depth dive. that's always in millimeters and generally done with calipers instead of a ruler. it just depends on the data i need edited to add: my ruler isn't the most precise either due to its location. it's really for my own convenience
We know what that ruler is really for bro
Ah cool makes sense
I *wish* I had an award to give you for that edit. 🌟 Take my upvote and this shiny gold star instead!
Real…. Pain…. 👀
i'm thankful i chose some little lines because around my joints and heel of my hand it started to get reallllll funky, kudos to everyone who's ever gotten their full palm done
🫡
What’s the point in having a 5 in ruler the only goes down to 1/2” lol
It's 6 1/2 inches if you count the tip😂😂😂
Humble brag
most of my bones are fragments/shards and also my hands are not thatttt big. i knew anything on the pad of my ring finger would automatically fall out based on other finger tats too :-(
You’ll need to get a few touch ups. Most of that will fall out. Each touch up a little more will hold each time
that's what i thought!!! it's day 3 and holding pretty strong but it's also 100+ degrees now and i'm ready to kiss it goodbye. thank u :)
Just to add, I did a slightly similar thing, not as bold lines, just a a quick reference for the small parts I use for work, as I still have an issue telling if it's a 2inch or 3inch screw by looking, even after all these years. 3 years later it's still the same as it was when I did it! heck yeah ruler gang!!
Idk what color gloves you wear for work, but I switched from Black to Blue, so I can see my hatch marks through the gloves. Just another tip!
I got a ruler on my forearm last year. Gang gang!!
I've heard from my tattoo artist that palm tattoos hold up better if they are done in dot-work style, if it falls off maybe you can consider looking into getting it re-done in that style for more longevity
that's a really good point!!! thank you
My palm tattoo is 5 years old and looks the same as ever
You’re an anomaly
No my artist is just good
You must have some soft ass hands cuz anyone will tell you palm tattoos need touched up.
I have a similar one for knitting. Ruler tattoos are the most useful things.
they are!! the only thing that sucks is its accuracy depends on how tensed my hand is and will probably only continue to get worse as i get it touched up 😩😩
I've debated for years getting a ruler tattoo because I knit and crochet so much. I'd need it in inches and cm since you never know what you're going to have to deal with in Canada.
I only have it in inches and just do extra calculations when I have to convert.
Do metric on the other hand. Fulfill your purpose.
i think there is a certain assumption 99.999% of people are gonna make about this tat lol.
i hope it helps that i am not a dude, but the assumptions have already started so i think you're right
the utility outweighs the perception. and it's a good conversation piece. just razzin ya.
thank you clean penis
*shing* *sparkle sparkle*
That’s 12 inches I swear babe
No advice for healing but this is pretty sick!!
thank you!!! people in my real life are so divided over whether it's dumb as fuck or the coolest thing lmao
Coolest thing.
i love you
Not as much as I love you, and your ruler!
As a fellow hand measurer, I like it. I know exactly how long certain fingers are so I can use them for rough measures. It's very convenient lol
it's so nice!! i've just been going around measuring literally everything lol. it's so nice to have a rough approximation
question… do ruler tattoos warp over time to the point of the measurement no longer being accurate?? i’ve always wondered this
probably, but they'll fade (on a palm) so you can just start over LMFAO
The first thing I thought of when I saw this image was “yikes” because hand tattoos warp and fade and don’t last but you already know it, so now my opinion changes to what a IDGAF badass lol
LOLLL
This should come in handy!
That ain't a bad idea! Congrats
thank you!! i love the reassurance from my fellow handyfolks
What a very handy idea!
GD. I struggle with eye-identifying measurements. I need this.
it's so fun i've been measuring literally everything
Now I’m just jealous 😂😭
Awe are you an X-ray tech? Haha I have thought about doing this too haha
i'm not but i work with human and animal remains! haven't put it to use in that regard yet but i'm v excited
That makes sense! I have also considered tattooing an R for right and L for left on my hands because I need it for work and it doesn't come naturally to me
i wanted the R and L for novelty but i didn't want people to think i was Big Dumb so i've held off LMAO
Haha that is definitely also a factor
don’t be too disappointed! i have my palms done and i have heard from multiple artists that it’s basically essential to blow out lines on the palm, otherwise it’ll fall out.
i'm not too mad, the blowouts are reassuring that at least SOME evidence of a palm tat will be there after it falls out lol
I’ve had my palm and fingers tattooed for around 2 years now and I have often have sweaty hands lmao but they’ve held up so well. I think as long as the artist did them deep enough and you let it heal correctly you should be fine
I have a 4" ruler on my forearm and it's been a fuckin delight to have. You'll never regret, even if the current pain is horrible
yesss another person with a ruler!!!!
How'd you pick which finger it should run up?
Pointer finger is the most used and most sensitive, ring is the least used and least sensitive, and middle has other connotations. Idk if it was part of their reasoning (or the artist's), but it makes sense.
Personally, i like it better offset on the hand than if it were centered on the middle finger too
my artist and i were shooting for the middle finger (longer ruler) but realized my thumb meat created an uneven surface. so we moved it over to my ring bc it was flatter!' i wasn't too worried about pain or anything
Palm tattoos usually need to be gone over multiple times to get to stick
my artist and i have 3~ touchup seshes planned :(
What a handy ruler
Ohhhh, I’ve always wanted a ruler hand too. Dope.
I love it, so functional. I feel like it’s missing a line towards the tip of your finger tho, like a half-inch line.
it is! i knew from previous tats on the ring and pinky finger of my other hand that shit would fade mad fast so we didn't even bother
I also want to get a line on my thumb for where an inch is
i highly recommend it's so fun!! i got my inspo from the tsp/tbsp tattoos bakers get hehe
OMG WAIT MORTICIAN
My partner was complimented on the “measuring devices” he has down the sides of his index fingers… he was like- does that guy not know what a ruler is?
It's going to fade fast. That's all.
The only tattoo I have is on my palm and I really don't think it hurt
it depends on your pain tolerance, mine was not as spicy as i thought it would be in general but certain areas made me feel like my fingers were getting sawed off with a hot butter knife (and these are little dashes!). to date my most painful tat is on my forearm bc my artist was really heavy handed
And it’s in Amerimeasures? Not in real units?
those are real units here
yes. it's in amerimeasures and large increments at that because palm tattoos tend to blow the fuck out. i didn't want an indecipherable blob especially since touchups are inevitable, so i went for half inch increments
Commie
Why do palms "fall out"? Never gotten my palm tattooed.
high turnover rate of skin cells, lots of usage, tough skin (so if artist doesn't go deep enough), just a laundry list of things
Ah! Thanks for the reply!
some cooks and chefs i know do this on the back of the hand/thumb area so they can have a precise reference for knife cuts. we don't need six inches, barely over a few inches if anything. just make sure you use the entire length of the knife to get any kind of satisfaction, no matter the size 😉 also, tools. tools and gadgets help many situations excel to their fullest potential.
Adam Savage from Mythbusters has a ruler tattoo on his arm.
Get cms on the other hand
other hand is reserved for some badass shit one day from luke ashley but maybe when this one falls out i'll switch to cms ;)
Won’t this wear off pretty quickly ?
yes it will!!! we have 3 touchups planned
are you sure it was done in Correct Measurement?
yes! we used a real ruler for the stencil. it'll inevitably start warping because of the nature of skin, but for right now it's accurate
wtf is that
Saw it was for bones, and I thought it was for Nanami Kento. That's still wicked and looks sick!!
IS IT FOR MEASURING PLANTS
Post a update in a week then two week. I'm curious if it will stay
Hmmm, measurement convenience?
Try not to move your hand too much for the rest of your life or else it’s gonna rub right off
it already started but that's okay it just gives me more creative freedom
Adam Savage got an actual ruler tattooed on his forearm
im gonna hope youre a baker measuring dough lengths
Mine would only be three lines :((
I used to work as a stone mason apprentice and this would be so sick for measuring stones for facades when ya forget your tape measure across the worksite
Terrible placement lol
But why
