My disappointment is immense and my day is ruined.

Magistar_Alex

Yeah I felt that and I feel like this is a match stopper. I'm late to watching the event today, what are the ultimate results from this?

xTin0x_07

he retired 6-6 4th set

Magistar_Alex

Ouch. Big ouch, so I guessed it right it was a match stopper. I hope he recovers quickly. On another note my bracket is officially ruined.

wificentrist

It wasn’t a match-stopper, he dove again and then flaked out on match point.

Make_the_music_stop

And now retired on facing second match point after another dive. Strange ending.

OctopusNation2024

For some reason he dove AGAIN on the next point this time not a ball he was even close to Have no clue what that was but I'm sure that didn't help the knee either

our_whole_empire

>For some reason he dove AGAIN on the next point Well, when you can't move your legs fast enough to get somewhere, your instinct is to try to make a jump.

AMthree

My instinct when I can't move fast enough to get to a ball is to stop trying and watch it fly past me.

our_whole_empire

And how much are you getting paid for winning that match?

Xenosys83

Bro was just planning on diving for every ball until the end of the match.

Roy1984

After this he will probably never again go for these diving shots on grass...

Ingr1d

Better than diving on hard court

Dropshot12

Then retires 2 points later on match point...

dk240996

Fuck man, literally days before the Olympics too. He and Iga were definitely going to contend for mixed medal spots.

latman

Probably not, Iga is a bad doubles player she can't volley

Hinglemacpsu

Career high ranking of #29 and reached the French Open final in doubles. She also reached the quarter finals of the Australian Open and the quarter finals of the 2020 Olympics in mixed doubles. She is by no means a bad doubles player.

latman

Wow I didn't realize that. I guess the rest of her game makes up for her poor net play

devoker35

Lol, she carried Hurkacz in United Cup. She was incredible.

Prize_Illustrator_44

“Iga is a bad doubles player” Tell us you know NOTHING about tennis without telling us. OMG!

Babakins

They also went deep, if not won, the Holman cup. Iga joked she wanted to show hubie it’s possible to win without a tiebreak

Tarmac-Chris

I don't really understand what happened here? Seemed like a fairly safe dive for his legs?

BelgianBond

It may well have been but he dived a lot in the match and had a fall at one point too. If it's a muscle injury as speculated, it could be that it gave in after several over exertions.

SouldiesButGoodies84

He's 6'5" and has no need to be diving like that at his size is what happened.

BillRuessell81

Boris Becker was 6“3, around 190lbs and was flying all over the place back in the 80‘s.

SouldiesButGoodies84

Becker was a BEAST. This is Hubie. Different capacity.

No_Operation7130

Becker paid heavily for his dives later in life with multiple hip surgeries

SouldiesButGoodies84

Ah. And there it is. Thank you.

BillRuessell81

Yeah, the first one was 16 years after his career. That’s just from general wear and tear of being a professional sportsman. If you hurt your hip from falling down it’s off to the hospital right away and you have to have surgery within hours. Happened to me in 2021.

dannyr76

Yeah. I'd imagine for smaller, shorter people, falling like that isn't a big deal.

SouldiesButGoodies84

Obviously depends on the fall angle, but 6'5," 180 lbs with some bulk behind it...even as an athlete you're taking a bit more of a crapshoot risk than say a Goffin or FAA. Acc to another commenter this also wasn't his first dive in this match.

Icy_Bodybuilder_164

180 lbs is actually very light for 6’5 lol

SouldiesButGoodies84

He might be heavier. I'm terrible at weight guessing. lol I know Med isn't that much taller, for example, but the build is obviously different (see him collapsing on a USO court in '21).

Icy_Bodybuilder_164

I googled Hurkacz’s weight and he is 179 pounds, so you were right. Crazy thing is Medvedev is 6’6 183 pounds, so they’re practically the same build

SouldiesButGoodies84

Similar weight, height, different build, looks like. Hubie has more muscle on him, thicker gams.

Icy_Bodybuilder_164

It’s partially genetics for sure. Medvedev looks both skinnier (as in less fat) and less muscular than Hurkacz, but yet weighs more somehow. Genetics play a part in how your body carries weight and even how much of your muscle shows on your body.

Cloudy0-

He dives quite a bit on grass, and it hasn’t caused an injury before this. To me this seems more like an unlucky accident.

SouldiesButGoodies84

I mean, we don't really know that. There could be minor injuries from it that he's walked off. Didn't this time. IMO, it's the opposite. He's been lucky up until now.

Xenosys83

Perhaps he twisted something in the knee pushing off for the dive.

HoverShark_

It’s a bit of an odd one, in badminton for instance this kind of dive is a normal part of the game & rarely causes injuries other than grazes but I suppose if you’re not used to it and/or land funny you could hurt yourself

Cloudy0-

Looks his whole right side up to his knee hit the ground at the same time, so it could have been from the impact.

Character-Escape9212

I hope he’s ok and can play mixed with Iga in Olympics :/

Far-Difference8596

There’s a crazy wind in England at the moment(I’m in Bristol and it’s hard to walk on your own outside 😅) so I’m not surprised Hubi’s serve was affected. Feel sorry for him, I hope he recovered in time for the Olympics

throwawayshepherd69

Hubi is literally a player that I just can't figure out. He plays a desperate style of tennis though he has a grand slam winning arsenal of weapons. But sometimes (aside from his serve) it feels like he plays short man tennis (no shade to short kings) when he's like 6'5. Or he's trying to play cute tennis... like Gael Monfis without that crazy bionic body... idk man I'm confused.

corran11

Exactly, got the same feeling, so often asking myself “man, why would you do that”

WaitWide3690

Exactly why he injured himself in that moment. He could’ve smashed the ball with power for secured winner, instead he makes terrible drop shot which leads to returned ball and the need of the dive…

salebote

I suspect there was an existing issue with his knee

our_whole_empire

More like biceps femoris muscle. That's what the medical guy was massaging.

LittyTitty45

hurkacz certainly hasn’t been boring this year

Ill-Maximum9467

Boris Becker used to dive but they trained those dives and how to do it safely and with minimal risk.

Pretend_Tea6261

When trying to win you sometimes over extend. Don't blame hom for diving but I think Hubi was going to lose the match anyway. Too reliant on serves and winning tiebreaks.

Glittering_Tea3547

Oh no 😥

Whompa

Heartbreaking to see I hope he’s okay…it was brutal watching him retire nearly right after…

LeRoy_Denk_414

With the abuse that knees have taken in this tournament, somebody might call Kneeta to try to put a stop to it.

whatifdany

So novak’s draw that was already ridiculous became even easier

OctopusNation2024

Hurkacz wasn't necessarily in contending form anyway though He was 2-1 down to Fils who's not even that experienced on grass when this happened and his serve hasn't been close to as untouchable as it was last year(broken twice by Albot and three times by Fils on very fast first week outer court grass) If anything De Minaur would be a better test for Novak's current movement than Hurkacz who often doesn't play many long rallies at all

Flat_Professional_55

Every draw is easy when you’re as good as him on grass

lok_129

And when nobody knows how to play on grass besides like 2-3 players

Roy1984

It wasn't really ridiculus... Hurkacz for example was the hardest opponent that top 4 players could get in QF, he was on Novak's side. Now that he's out Novak can meet there with de Minaur I think who is pretty solid on grass and has a great season. Semis look easier on his side when you consider that most likely 3 players are able to win the title here and Novak is alone on his half. Until semis Alcaraz for example has an even easier draw. Sinner had even an easier draw last year until semis. He basically played against dudes out of top 70.

yalex87

F*** the grass, most traumatizing surface

denasher

The injury would probably have been worse if it was on a hard court

yalex87

At least you can run to the ball and have good control on surface

AlligatorDeathSaw

I wouldn't make that dive on hard court

Leyrran

He dived a lot during this match, this one was fairly understandable since it is a tiebreak but the other ones weren't

balmafula

Sometimes you have to let it go. Sucks for Hubi.

ctrlfire

very glad to say i was slacking off at work watching this, sad to see Hubi retire :( it was a good match

Roy1984

It actually doesn't look that bad on the clip as the injury was.

_welcome

pretty crazy/sad to see huge servers like Hurkacz and Berrettini going out this early

ImpressionFeisty8359

Sad to see.

kihraxz_king

There was a play earlier where his knee buckled a bit and he took a tumble to preserve it. I think he actually injured it there and made it unstable. Then, when he dove the knee did not have the stability to handle getting slammed around sideways and completed the tear of whatever. Probably the acl.

Melony567

maybe, with tired legs (and knees), an impact like that would really cause something to snap.

trevo123

Retiring on MP… lol how petty
