The Smiths original is devastating…the Jeff Buckley cover is triple that. Whenever I need to start crying I just listen to that song it never fails to make me breakdown
i thought it was quite beautiful that morrissey became friends with one of the mothers after speaking to her about the song. but i agree the song itself is so sad.
I cry listening to this - once I had kids that was it. I still listen to it once in a while because I think it’s beautiful and haunting in its way but it’s tough.
Yep, easy top five for me too. Beautiful music is sad music and sad music is beautiful music. I love The Cramps but I wouldn’t call any of their music beautiful - or sad
Too sad? No. Some of their saddest songs are their most beautiful - Asleep, I Know It’s Over, Please Please Please, Well I Wonder, Back To The Old House. The sincerity and insight in these songs is incredible art.
The “Well, there must be” line from Asleep gets me every time though. Just haunting but incredibly beautiful at the same time. Absolute genius.
Yes! ‘’There is another world, there is a better world… well there must be, well there must be’’ It’s probably The Smiths line that goes through my head the most. It’s my favourite Smiths song too.
I have always liked the concept and I like the way you describe it. I just don’t find it appealing enough to sit through every time, it’s also a bit long.
I still love all these songs, but there are some I struggle to casually listen to because of how depressing they are. Asleep, I Know It’s Over, and Suffer Little Children are the main ones.
Asleep is favourite Smiths song and is also the saddest song I’ve ever heard. I don’t understand what ‘’too sad’’ means. I think maybe you have to have suffered deeply enough for it to resonate.
My favourite film is Come and See, it’s also the ‘’saddest’’ film I’ve ever seen. I put speech marks on saddest because that would be a titanic understatement.
I can't listen to Meat Is Murder. I've listened to it a handful of times ever and it is so effective at portraying what a gruesome reality most of us participate in. It's too heavy and too horribly sad for those beings. Can't do it.
Well I Wonder is the saddest by far. i don’t like asleep because it’s not a very good song. other sad songs i love are suffer little children, the hand that rocks the cradle, i know it’s over, meat is murder
Back to the Old House has since the first time I listened to it made me break down crying. It reminds me of my aunt who passed aways old house and just going back there. Beautiful song really, but too sad, I tend to skip it for that reason.
I Know It's Over just destroys me, yet I find it so, so beautiful nonetheless.
Somehow it sounds better on super loud car speakers
when you’re sobbing and driving down the road at 3 AM… I would imagine
I agree

Suffer Little Children .. is pretty uncomfortable to hear knowing the back story to the song

its a haunting song indeed
Definitely agree
What’s the backstory?

Oh. Thanks
if you think back to the old house is sad, try the john peel session version 😭
REALL. The John Peel version just hits more than the complete 🤞
“Well I wonder” hurts a lot
This song makes me a little sad but I love vibing to the bass line. This song g makes me feel sad and good at the same time.
This song feels like a memory fading away. Like you are reminiscing of a past experience and over time it starts to fade and you stop wondering
last night i dreamt somebody loved me
not a big fan of asleep
It’s top 5 best for me.
Yep, easy top five for me too. Beautiful music is sad music and sad music is beautiful music. I love The Cramps but I wouldn’t call any of their music beautiful - or sad
reminds me of the perks of being a wallflower
yea top 5 songs to listen to while killing yourself maybe
It was my top listened to song a couple years back, used to listen to it on repeat every night going to bed :)
I would fight you if you said that to my face.
ok let’s do it 53°28'36"N 2°16'27"W
But seriously, you don’t like that song?
I loved it in the soundtrack to Sex Education but I don’t listen to it on its own, largely because it’s just depressing and not much else.
Great, a show about a bunch of sex having normies appropriated a song about killing yourself made by a celibate.
This is embarrassing. Please delete this.
Carissa's Wierd do a great cover that might be even sadder :(

“Don’t try to wake me in the morning for I will be gone” 😢
I Know It's Over
EXACTLY I Know It’s Over makes me bawl like a toddler bro
"please, please, please let me get what i want" especially that one live version wehre you can see he's holding back tears
I think you mean the version where he sings ‘’Let me have who I want’’?
I don't think I've ever related to a song this much tbh
last night i dreamt somebody loves me feels like a kick to the teeth 😭😭
It’s a bit of chore listening to the intro sometimes, dare I say it 😬
no ur so real; i like smoking when listening to it specifically bc then my stoned ass can be like ✨pretty music intro✨
I like the concept of it but it’s a bit long.
I used to hate it but as I've gotten older I love it. It's like riding an apathetic wave and then being overcome with an emotional beat drop.
I have always liked the concept and I like the way you describe it. I just don’t find it appealing enough to sit through every time, it’s also a bit long.
The acoustic version of Back to the Old House is in my top 3 smiths songs
Way better than the original
I still love all these songs, but there are some I struggle to casually listen to because of how depressing they are. Asleep, I Know It’s Over, and Suffer Little Children are the main ones.
well i wonder… i don’t even think it’s their saddest song just the associations i have with it
Girlfriend in a Coma almost always makes me cry.
THATS A REGGAE SONG
Asleep. It's a beautiful song, don't get me wrong, but it never fails to ruin my mood.
On the other hand, I have lyrics from Asleep on a memorial tattoo and I have sung it as a lullaby to my eldest since before she was born.
I Know It's Over
Rusholme ruffians, subtle melancholy to the song
nope, way too much fun

For personal reasons There is a light that never goes out always makes me terribly sad but Asleep is definitely second
Asleep
Suffer little children
suffer little children is just haunting. i can’t listen it without getting reflexive
last night i dreamt that somebody loved me
Asleep and Meat Is Murder
Last night I dreamt somebody loved me
this joke isnt funny anymore ..for me
None. I knew what I signed up for
Asleep
Never Had No One Ever is a contender for sure
Well I wonder brings back some rough times, same with reel around the fountain
i know it's over ruins my day if i even think about it
Well I Wonder is the saddest by far. i don’t like asleep because it’s not a very good song. other sad songs i love are suffer little children, the hand that rocks the cradle, i know it’s over, meat is murder
LNIDTSLM hits too close to home for me somedays. That is an "only once in a while" kind of song for me.
Back to the Old House has since the first time I listened to it made me break down crying. It reminds me of my aunt who passed aways old house and just going back there. Beautiful song really, but too sad, I tend to skip it for that reason.
Never
Well I Wonder, with the added rainfall at the end. My personal favourite song ever
Well I Wonder.
Last night I dreamt that somebody loved me and what do you see in him.
I relate “back to the old house” too much
