E. Quinn Aux is the kind of name you’d see in a children’s book where the author is trying to be punny.
Having the “E.” all by itself (rather than as a self-chosen abbreviation a la E.B. White) is one thing
then having “Aux”?? It reads like they are actively trying to make this name look French, but imo it’s in poor taste - “aux” is a French definite article meaning “to the”. Imagine somebody in France naming their kid “To The”.
Furthermore, “Aux” just makes me think of the phrase “pass the aux (cord)”
The name sucks and they know people will drag on it. I swear that's a huge part of the appeal for some folks. They want to make a statement about themselves, and this is their way to do it. You can show them these posts, and they still may not care. So I suggest a different approach. Tell them something like this...
The problem with giving your child a name no one else has is that no one else has it. Meaning, the child will be easy pickings for identity theft or to be stalked and harassed by an ex, former friend, or school bully. The child won't go by this name in many areas of their life, just to preserve their anonymity. Or, imagine a hiring manager looking at a resume, assuming the name on it is some sort of error and just chucking it in the trash. The main goal of parenting is to prepare your child to be a self-sufficient adult. Not to throw roadblocks up from the child's literal first day.
You could also point out that this name gives strong celebrity baby name vibes. The problem is they aren't celebrities. They lack the money and connections to smooth the path for a person with this type of name. It's all the downside with none of the perks.
If the lass likes oceans and stars so much, then she’s copping out easy from great names related to both:
-Delphine, close Latin to the constellation Delphinus which is a dolphin that pulled the poet Arion to safety in some myths.
-Mira, a Star located in the Centus constellation, or the whale beast that Perseus fought. Mira has actually faded in time, so your cousin could say the star faded away in order to brighten her everyday with Mira as her child.
-Ariel, one of the moons of Uranus and a mermaid princess. Only the most desperate of nerds will make fun of the Uranus part, so she can just say she was named after a moon. (Or say it’s Neptune, will a 2nd grader bully really check?)
Probably plenty more constellations, Greek moon names, or even other names I’m missing, but if she’s gonna nerd, then nerd harder.
Apparently there’s a galaxy called Whirlpool. I wouldn’t name a kid that, but I’m definitely naming my character with ✨*unqiue*✨parents that for a book now.
