That little run was his joint-highest win streak since 2008 and it came against the right guys at the right time and in the right fashion. In no way should this guy have been main eventing at MSG based on his skills.

At the end of the day match makers are trying to find fights that sell well. Not necessarily the "best matchup" or "the deserved title shot". I don't see a way it would be different unless there was a bracket style season of fights or someshit where everyone fought on a regular schedule or someshit. At the end of the day just like boxing it is an odd style of sport that inherently lends itself toward promo/popularity as opposed to pure skill/meritocracy
