I think they updated the cup-tie rule to separate the different stages. So even though he played in group stage for BVB, he’d be eligible to play for Sociedad in the knockouts
Every loan contact specifies whether a player is allowed or not allowed to play the loaning club, the competition rules only determine if that clause is even relevant.
He’s definitely not a first-choice starter there, and they don’t even typically play with a 10. So he’d either be a backup winger or be shoehorned in as an 8, which I suppose could either be good for adding a bit of grit to his game OR useless because we all know he’s an attacker.
Don’t like this fit.
The issue is that, if Sociedad does indeed see him as an 8, I doubt he’s going to play very much. I hope he does! That would be great! But there are seemingly multiple locked down starters ahead of him.
not really. if he impresses in the minutes he's initially given, he will fucking crack it. the equation is really that simple. no lineup is completely inelastic. at this point the season, the volume of games catches up with a lot of teams, injuries stack up. if he shows something when he gets on the field, he will play. just because that doesn't seem to be the case at BvB, doesn't mean that's not the case literally everywhere else.
opta has them one spot above Dortmund but very close, so yeah. If you think he earned starting min at dortmund (which I believe most do), then its easy to be optimistic.
I don't think he earned starting minutes of Dortmund this year, no. He was solid in spot duty last year and nearly willed them to that comeback win for the Bundesliga title with his two assists, when no other player on BvB was worth a goddamn that day. But they still came up short. This year, he's clearly not showed enough in training. Otherwise, guess what? Terzic would've found minutes for him. This is concerning because it's kind of damning re: what we all think of Gio's motivation and work ethic behind the scenes.
i do think he's good enough. i don't think he's been training hard enough or making enough of a stamp behind the scenes. otherwise he'd get his minutes still. that's what is concerning. i know it's hard for a lot of fans to accept that their wonderboy isn't made of the right stuff, but like what evidence do we have that Gio -- a) works hard b) trains hard c) isn't a difficult personality to deal with? -- literally all the evidence has come out to the contrary. but he is a talented player, he just needs to figure his shit out and bust his ass a whole lot harder if he's gonna be a long term professional
Please show me evidence. all of it. do not hold back. we know he threw a fit at the world cup, but Kehl backed him on that when he returned to the club. Non-issue. So what at Dortmund do you have on a,b, and c...lay it on me...Yes talented players can be difficult but that just seems like a nice narrative to throw around, but I haven't heard anything about him at Dortmund and I need something so i know we aren't talking about the hardest working kid in the locker room.
The evidence is that he's not playing. If he was training hard enough, he would be playing. His coach isn't some vindictive asshole. If Gio is busting his ass in training and showing that he can help the team win with the offense running smoothly, he would be in the damn lineup. This logic is not rocket science. BvB isn't full of world beater players. It's a lot of old dogs dug in and young prospects like Gio. The fact that he's not standing out has to do with work ethic and discipline.
This isn't evidence. It's a story intended to make sense of the world. You can just say you don't know. Not everything needs to make sense. Show me a former teammate saying something...a video...anything I can see, hear, touch, etc, but I have plenty of stories.
Not saying it’s “not possible”, but Sociadad typically prefers Basque players. They are not exclusively Basque, like Athletic Club. But they are primarily Basque and I believe the only non-Basques are non-Spanish. So Gio would fit the latter, but still not something typical of their track record.
Nah, Zubieta is just a crazy academy which produces top players and La Real doesn’t spend a lot of money on transfers so they buy wonder kids or vets. I wouldn’t say they prefer basques.
Sociedad are a good club in a good league but Gio would not be a starter there.
I'm assuming they are losing Kubo for the AFC Asian Cup that starts this weekend and they think Gio would be depth?
I suppose if Gio played well there would be a future as Kubo is attracting interest from big money clubs.
I would prefer a club where he is more likely to get a chance to have a run of games as a starter.
Asian Cup goes thru Feb 13 and Japan is the heavy favorites, so yes Kubo would be gone for that whole time most likely.
They also rotate forwards between Silva and the guy from Nigeria, so there may be an opening there possibly as well.
I know this is not related, but I just took a look at the La Liga standings and Girona is in 1st!? They were in the second division 2 years ago.
Sociedad currently 6th
Jesse Marsch about to climax rn
Pleasssse send Gio to La Liga!
This is a sexy move if he would start. This keeps him in the Champions League.
Isn't he tied to BvB for that competition?
I think they updated the cup-tie rule to separate the different stages. So even though he played in group stage for BVB, he’d be eligible to play for Sociedad in the knockouts
Got it. If they played BVB in the knockouts could he still play?
Yes
Depends on if BVB allows it, it would need to be specifically allowed
I think it’s actually the other way around. BVB would have to specifically not allow it.
It's really in whatever is written in the loan agreement, it will either say they can or can't play against their loaning club
No, the competition rules allow him to play. If nothing is stated in the loan contract, then he can play.
Every loan contact specifies whether a player is allowed or not allowed to play the loaning club, the competition rules only determine if that clause is even relevant.
Depending on the terms of the loan, BVB would have to allow it
He’s definitely not a first-choice starter there, and they don’t even typically play with a 10. Terzic’s main complaint about Gio is his defense, so being forced to play as an 8 for half a season might be good for his development.
The issue is that, if Sociedad does indeed see him as an 8, I doubt he’s going to play very much. I hope he does! That would be great! But there are seemingly multiple locked down starters ahead of him.
Unless he just can’t hang and gets benched again for someone who can
He wouldn’t start barring injuries, he’s coming in as a replacement for a player who barely played. I he would be a second option after Kubo likely.
Kubo doesn’t play centrally though?
It would be really hard for him to crack the starting lineup. Their front 6 averages close to €40 mil per person on market value.
not really. if he impresses in the minutes he's initially given, he will fucking crack it. the equation is really that simple. no lineup is completely inelastic. at this point the season, the volume of games catches up with a lot of teams, injuries stack up. if he shows something when he gets on the field, he will play. just because that doesn't seem to be the case at BvB, doesn't mean that's not the case literally everywhere else.

So terzic not playing him is why you don’t think he’s good enough. That’s fair. Not how I think about players but it’s reasonable.
i do think he's good enough. i don't think he's been training hard enough or making enough of a stamp behind the scenes. otherwise he'd get his minutes still. that's what is concerning. i know it's hard for a lot of fans to accept that their wonderboy isn't made of the right stuff, but like what evidence do we have that Gio -- a) works hard b) trains hard c) isn't a difficult personality to deal with? -- literally all the evidence has come out to the contrary. but he is a talented player, he just needs to figure his shit out and bust his ass a whole lot harder if he's gonna be a long term professional

you are truly not worth continuing this conversation with. goodbye
Jorge Mendes already drumming up interest ![gif](giphy|xg4C6MK6yq0qNVPAOq|downsized)
Can someone explain the Marsch reference? Did he just say this would be a good move before it was a rumor?
Yeah i think on the new podcast he’s on with jimmy conrad he said gio should move to la liga
I think he specifically named Sociedad.
He did specify Sociedad
What’s Jimmy Conrad’s newest podcast?
“Call it what you want”
anywhere he’ll play regularly with decent competition

Txio Errena 😃
Don’t they start Kubo…
There are exceptions for sure, but they’re primarily basque
They took Kieran Tierney on loan this season
Nah, Zubieta is just a crazy academy which produces top players and La Real doesn’t spend a lot of money on transfers so they buy wonder kids or vets. I wouldn’t say they prefer basques.
They had Carlos Vela, Griezmann and a few seasons ago took Jonathan Gomez. They have taken non Basque players
Vastly prefer this so sevilla

This would be the PERFECT destination for Gio.
Real Madrid to link up with Jude 🤝 Luka Modrić successor
Gio would not play much on this squad. He'd be 4th or 5th on the outside midfielder depth chart.
